00:09It was only a globally televised event, millions of people were watching it,
00:13and the man of the hour, apart from the groom obviously, in my opinion,
00:19was Daniel Martin, Meghan Markle's makeup artist.
00:22He's been doing Meghan's makeup for over a decade.
00:25They are close, close friends.
00:26He also does the makeup of many, many, many stars.
00:29Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, the list goes on and on.
00:33I got the incredible chance to sit in his makeup chair while we were both coincidentally in Singapore for a
00:40trip with Skin Inc.
00:41Without further ado, let's cut to me and Daniel.
00:45I'm going to be getting a Meghan Markle look on this face with these hands that have touched Meghan's face.
00:52Because she has these outings that she has to do publicly,
00:56she needs to keep everything very easy and very consistent.
01:00So the look that we're doing today is from Meghan's visit to the Oceania exhibition.
01:05Would you say that's a pretty typical look that you would do on her?
01:08Yeah. I mean, if anything, we did a bit of a brighter lip.
01:12You ready? I'm so ready.
01:13Okay. The skin is so important to me.
01:15So this serum is really compatible with foundation.
01:20So I like to massage this in.
01:22This is the best part.
01:23Your skin is so nice.
01:25Is it? I'm breaking out.
01:28This morning.
01:29You popped a pimple this morning?
01:31Yeah, I was like...
01:31Mine's coming through, so...
01:33Okay, so this is the Pro Do.
01:35And I'm actually going to use this as like a foundation magnet.
01:39I'm just going to really concentrate it on your T-zone.
01:42It kind of mattifies in those specific areas.
01:46I want to know how you got into the biz.
01:49I worked at Mac when I was in school.
01:52I was just like a counter girl.
01:54I worked at the Mac counter.
01:56And then when I moved to the East Coast was when I started working at Aveda.
01:59That's where I met Pat McGrath.
02:01And you were apprenticing under her for a long time.
02:04So what I've done is I've prepped your skin.
02:06And this is really important for me in my first step.
02:08I do eyes first because all the fallout that happens,
02:11it's easier to clean up afterwards.
02:13And then I can go into your skin and it's super quick.
02:15So I'm starting with this darker shade first.
02:18I don't like to do a lot of structure around the eye,
02:23especially when I'm working with Asian eyes.
02:25Because I feel like I'm creating a dimension that's not there.
02:29So it looks really fake.
02:31So the best way to do it is to start dark at the lash line and build up.
02:35It's following the shape of your eye.
02:37So then that's what's creating the dimension.
02:38And I can kind of see where your natural crease is.
02:42And that's kind of like my line to stop.
02:45I basically only use two eyeshadow colors on Megan.
02:48Always?
02:49Pretty much.
02:49Especially for that look, it was two.
02:51With you now, I'm using like a darker, almost like a black,
02:54at the base of your lash line.
02:56So it gives you that dimension.
03:00So you've been working with Megan for almost a decade.
03:03Yes.
03:04How did that relationship kind of turn out?
03:05At the time, she didn't have a publicist.
03:07So she reached out to my agent directly.
03:09Like Megan reached out to your agent?
03:11Yeah.
03:11Wow.
03:12So my agent in LA was like,
03:13Hey, there's this actress, young actress that, you know,
03:16is really interested in working with you.
03:18Her name is Megan Markle.
03:19I think it'd be a great fit for you.
03:20We just instantly became friends.
03:23And then, boom.
03:25Now she is a global sensation.
03:29So I'm going to go into your upper lash waterline.
03:32I'm going to go up underneath and I'm going to have you blink.
03:34And what that does is the tearing from your eye moves that eyeliner around
03:38so it creates this like really gentle smokey eye and then I can clean it up afterwards.
03:42Now I'm going to go on top with the liquid liner.
03:44And I'm just going to do something really easy.
03:47Just really light.
03:48Again, just adding a bit more dimension.
03:51So you did Megan's wedding makeup.
03:54Yes.
03:55Iconic moment.
03:56How long did you know and you couldn't tell anyone?
03:59I think before Christmas.
04:01And the wedding was in...
04:03In May.
04:04That's long!
04:06Yeah.
04:06That's long!
04:08I'm going to have you curl your lash.
04:09Okay.
04:10And I love this eyelash curler.
04:11This is the Surratt Beauty curler.
04:13Do a little layer of mascara and then curl it again.
04:16The dry down from mascara will hold.
04:19And then you curl it again and it kind of locks in the shape.
04:24Did you have any like rules and restrictions in terms of the makeup for the wedding?
04:29No, we did everything basically over text.
04:32Oh really?
04:32Yeah, we didn't have a trial.
04:33You didn't do the trial?
04:34No.
04:35We didn't have time.
04:36She was just like, I just want to feel like myself.
04:38So did you approach her makeup day of the same way you normally would approach her makeup?
04:42Yeah.
04:42I mean the only difference was I had to think about her makeup in the car, being televised,
04:49outside in natural light at high noon.
04:52And it's almost better to not do so much on the skin because then you see everything that's laying on
04:58top of it.
04:59So what I did for her was I selectively did foundation just in her T-zone and where she needed
05:05to balance out coverage.
05:06So your eyes are pretty much done but now I'm going to add lashes that I use on her as
05:12well.
05:12How has your career changed since the oral wedding?
05:15If anything, it's just my exposures global.
05:18It freaked me out though how much my Instagram jumped.
05:22What were you at before the wedding?
05:24Where are you at now?
05:2517,000 and then it went to 70 in 24 hours.
05:29Whoa!
05:30Yeah.
05:33Do you tend to do the like only foundation where you need it kind of thing?
05:36So I tend to start in the center and work my way out.
05:39I usually do like a large brush and then I'll take a smaller, it's actually an eyeshadow brush, to finish
05:46off the foundation.
05:48Do you have any tips for if you do, you know, need more coverage, like how to make it look
05:53more natural?
05:54Yeah, so say you use a brush like this, I'll go over what I've done with a wet sponge and
06:00that kind of breaks it up a bit.
06:03So I'm going to use this incredible Japanese foundation, it's called Magic Foundation, but I like to use it as
06:10like a corrector concealer.
06:11Basically the same consistency as the Dior foundation, except that it has a bit more coverage.
06:18Did you know like what Megan's dress would look like, what her hair would look like before the wedding?
06:22Yeah, no I knew nothing, nothing until the day of.
06:25And then I'm going to use a pressed powder to finish.
06:28This is what I'll do to really prevent things from moving.
06:34So this is the Honest Beauty Magic Balm.
06:36I love this balm.
06:37So this is what's going to give me a bit more radiance.
06:40So I'm just going to take a bit of it and I'm just going to follow it up right through
06:43here.
06:44And it just gives your skin that glow without looking too shiny.
06:50I tend to do highlighter first because then I can go in and shape out the face.
06:57What I'm doing now is I'm taking the same contour color, follow that shaping up through the eye.
07:03And bring it down a bit on the nose too, just to kind of give you a bit of strength.
07:07It's like a light contour.
07:08So we're using the new Dior Stellar Shine lipstick.
07:12So it's like a hybrid lipstick lip gloss.
07:14I love the texture.
07:15It feels like lip balm.
07:16My lips are so dry right now.
07:18So one trick that I like to do is I like to actually use the same color on the cheek.
07:23And what this does is it just kind of brings everything together.
