00:14where I'm going to meet co-founder Sarah Lee,
00:16and she's going to teach me how to make their
00:18popular watermelon sleeping glow mask.
00:21This is Sarah Lee, my guide for the day.
00:23She met her co-founder Christine Chang
00:25while they were both working at L'Oreal in South Korea.
00:27Years later, they moved to the States and had the idea
00:30for the first iteration of Glow Recipe,
00:32an online shop where U.S. consumers could get the best K-beauty products.
00:36Three years into the business, the brand launched its own line of products,
00:39and now it's one of the most popular lines at Sephora.
00:42I am here at the factories. Let's go!
00:45Hi guys, I'm Sarah, and I'm so excited, Mi-Anne,
00:48that you're here all the way in Korea with me at the factory of our OG watermelon glow sleeping mask.
00:54Step one, cutting and seeding the watermelons.
00:57The cutting process was not as easy as it would seem.
01:01Sarah and I struggled a lot.
01:04Let me try it.
01:06Man, you're better than me at this.
01:09Good job!
01:11We suck at this a lot!
01:14Look at this.
01:15That's good!
01:17Yeah!
01:20So, the next step is using your chopsticks right there.
01:24You can use them to pick these seeds out,
01:26so that when these go into the next step, which is preservation,
01:30it's a pristine steak.
01:33How are you doing over there?
01:35Oh, it's... it's coming!
01:43It's good!
01:44It's so good.
01:45This is a tedious process.
01:46I know.
01:48You are a pro.
01:50So, we've done all the chopping,
01:53and the next step is to actually go to this special room where this is all preserved for over a
01:58month.
02:00Step two, preserving the watermelon pieces.
02:04Whoa!
02:05I'm really excited about this huge bat filled with watermelon pieces floating in this secret liquid.
02:11Removing bacteria, keeping the formulation pristine but also stable,
02:15and then ready for it to be mixed with other ingredients.
02:19Every day, the team actually stirs this to make sure that there's even distribution of the liquid,
02:25and all the watermelon that's on the top layer are actually going back down, vice versa.
02:30So, you're just taking what's on the bottom, placing it on top,
02:33and this is done every single day for...
02:35Every single day.
02:36At least a month.
02:37And you know from the color, when it's a little opaque, that it's ready for it to be formulated.

02:43I feel like I'm, like, fishing.
02:48Whoa!
02:49Too much!
02:50So much heavier than I anticipated.
02:52That makes sense, because it's, like, so dense and full of water.
02:55Once this is all done and the preservation is complete,
02:58it's ready to be mixed with other ingredients for that perfect blend.
03:01So, let's go to labs to start mixing.
03:0730 days later, after the preservation process is complete,
03:10it's time to mix the actual formula.
03:13We have this beautiful base right here.
03:16It smells really good.
03:17The watermelon, as you know, is amazing for soothing and hydrating your skin.
03:21So, we added additional ingredients to get that extra moisture, exfoliation,
03:26and all these beautiful skincare benefits.
03:29The first one is hyaluronic acid.
03:31We all know that this is super hydrating for the skin.
03:34I'm sure you love this ingredient.
03:35It's so good.
03:35Can I pour it in?
03:36Yeah.
03:39Okay.
03:40Next is glycerin.
03:43Helps to increase the skin's moisture retention.
03:4510 ml.
03:50Another really important ingredient is AHA.
03:54AHA helps to exfoliate and also hydrate at the same time.
03:57Add a couple of drops.
04:00This is actually a really special ingredient.
04:03It's a seaweed extract.
04:04It's really, really packed with nutrients.
04:06It's amazing for nourishing the skin, but also adding extra moisture.
04:10Love that.
04:11You can see that the texture is really viscous and has that elasticity.
04:15It's a really cool, innovative blend because typically exfoliation and hydration weren't really living together in one blend.
04:22So, we were able to just add the perfect percentage of each ingredient for that.
04:27Cool.
04:27So, this is the mask.
04:29Unmixed.
04:30Whoa.
04:30You can see where all the viscous fluid is really heavy, so it went right through the watermelon.
04:36Do you want to give it a nice stir?
04:38Yes.
04:40Perfect.
04:41You can see kind of through the texture, right?
04:44It smells so good.
04:46Don't eat it.
04:47This is step four, which is filling, and this is taking place at our factory.
04:52So, there's a few steps within filling.
04:54The first is to clean the jars, and then with those clean jars, we're actually going to fill the real
05:00formula.
05:00I'm so excited.
05:01This is the part that I am most psyched about.
05:04It's going to be really fun.
05:07And this honestly was the most exciting part.
05:10Oh, okay.
05:13Seeing it all come together in the beautiful packaging.
05:19Damn it!
05:20I turned it off.
05:20We need to wipe this.
05:22This one is messed up.
05:24She's laughing at me.
05:28It's so much faster.
05:29It looks so much easier.
05:31This is a lot harder than it looks.
05:33If you mess it up, you mess the entire lineup, and you have to start all over.
05:38As you can see, I had some difficulties.
05:52This is step five, which is the final stage of the entire journey, and it is packaging.
05:59What I'm going to do is close the lid of the jar, and then pass it over to you, and
06:04then you can help with the carton.
06:06Once the jars are filled, they go down a conveyor belt, and it's time to slap them into the boxes
06:11and send them on their way.
06:19So, this is the finished product.

06:23I can't believe I made this!
06:25We made it from scratch.
06:27Literally.
06:28From watermelon fruit to preservation formula to mixing it to making it this.
06:35I can't believe it.
06:37I have this at home, and I know exactly what goes into it now.
