00:17There's a scene actually in episode 8, I think it is, and the setup behind that is that Hikaru
00:23has these two new people under his wing. He has Max of course and Kakizaki and he keeps telling them
00:30he's going to take them out to some really nice place. And so they're out there walking around
00:35the town and all of a sudden Kakizaki is like, oh, like a kid in a candy store and he
00:40runs down
00:40this little alleyway and he's like, oh, is this the place you wanted to take us to? All right.
00:45And I'm not really sure how well that carries over, but actually what he's looking at is a little
00:51alleyway that's, it's basically the, you know, the Macross's red light district and there in the
00:56in the foreground you have like the black cat club and it looks kind of upscale. It's probably
01:01what you'd call a hostess bar or a snack. But then right next door to that, you have this very
01:06pink
01:07sort of garish looking place. And then further on down the alleyway, you have these girls standing
01:11outside their respective stores. So yeah, what they're definitely looking at is the red light
01:15district and of course pink being representative of the sex for pay or at least very risque industry
01:23in Japan. I thought it was kind of amusing actually that you have the entire population
01:27of South Ataria Island and they've been, you know, teleported out into deep space and, you
01:31know, things are crumbling around them and they're rescued and pulled on board and they rebuild
01:35their, their city on board the ship. But by God, they also have to rebuild their red light
01:39district. So I thought that that was kind of amusing.
01:48The raised pinky gesture. Oh man, that, uh, kind of took me back seeing that one. I mean,
01:53the raised pinky gesture is traditionally, uh, accompanied by the word kore, which means
01:57this. You're like, ah, so she's your, uh, she's your this. And that's a kind of a slang
02:02term to mean you're, uh, your girlfriend. And I guess the flip side, the counterpart to
02:06that is you're this, which is, you know, your boyfriend. But I mean, at least, you know,
02:10in my own experience, I never really saw them that much, uh, in, in real life. So it was
02:14kind of like, oh man, he pulled up the pinky gesture and, uh, actually, you know, you know,
02:19speaking of that and sort of the, the nostalgia value for a lot of this show, I mean, it was,
02:24it was kind of funny in that episode around episodes eight to nine, we see a bunch of different
02:28interesting things go on in terms of, uh, just the, the, the slang that gets thrown around
02:34in the show. I mean, we're looking at a show that's like 20, you know, it's a years old.
02:37And so you have this slang, you know,
02:45When Max is referring to, uh, Minmei, he calls her this, this sort of, what they call, uh,
02:50Waseigo, which is basically made in Japan English. He calls her a transistor glamour.
02:55I'm like, transistor glamour? Heck is that? And, you know, did some research and sure enough,
03:00uh, Animego's original, uh, translation had it right on the ball. It's like a small,
03:05compact body, but with all the, just the right features. And then, uh, yeah, another one,
03:09you had, uh, Kakizaki. He referred to Minmei, again, Minmei, as, uh, Shan. And I'm like,
03:15Shan? What the heck is Shan? So again, did some more research, found out it comes from German,
03:19shun. And it means, uh, basically, an attractive young girl, you know, languages move on and,
03:25you know, I guess Japanese is no exception.
03:36I think it's in episode nine, you have Hikaru, and he goes out in the armored Valkyrie
03:39because they've picked up this incoming, uh, signal from the three Zentradi. And so he doesn't
03:44want to miss out, of course, on Minmei's big, you know, Miss, uh, Macross pageant. So he, he dials in
03:49to the transmission. And just for a second, we catch a little bit of what counts for a commercial.
03:57You just catch the very tail end of it, but it's talking about a store called, uh, Zenepuro
04:02in the third ward. And, uh, I didn't see how the, uh, finished subtitles were in the original
04:09version, but in the translation that I saw, it had a slight misspinning of, uh, Zenepuro.
04:14And when I heard that, I was like, it's, it's Zenepuro. And Zenep is short for Zenedad,
04:18or general, and pro for products, general products. And that actually, the name itself is taken
04:23from, uh, the Ringworld series written by Larry Niven. And, uh, that name was then in
04:30turn used to refer to, uh, a small store that was set up by two gentlemen, uh, Takeda and
04:35Okada. Um, and those two would coincidentally later go on to found, uh, among other people,
04:41Studio Gainax. So it was very much a sort of, uh, in joke to those in the know. It's like,
04:46hey, if you're a sci-fi fan, uh, especially sort of an underground one, and you'll know the
04:50store I'm talking about is general products in the third ward. And so I thought that was
04:53kind of neat.
