00:00:00The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five
00:00:19youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother Franklin.
00:00:24It is all the more tragic in that they were young, but had they lived very, very long lives,
00:00:31they could not have expected, nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre
00:00:37as they were to see that day. For them, an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare.
00:00:45The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes
00:00:49in the annals of American history, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
00:01:19So, let's go.
00:01:26I'm sorry.
00:01:28I'm sorry.
00:01:30I'm sorry.
00:01:32I'm sorry.
00:01:34I'm sorry.
00:01:36I'm sorry.
00:01:40I'm sorry.
00:02:07Hmm.
00:02:19As a result of a special grand jury investigation.
00:02:23Grave robbing in Texas is this hour's top news story.
00:02:26An informant led officers
00:02:27of the Muerto County Sheriff's Department
00:02:29to a cemetery just outside the small rural Texas community
00:02:33of Newt early this morning.
00:02:34Officers there discovered what appeared
00:02:36to be a grisly work of art.
00:02:38The remains of a badly decomposed body
00:02:41wired to a large monument.
00:02:43A second body was found in a ditch
00:02:45near the perimeter of the cemetery.
00:02:47Subsequent investigation has revealed
00:02:49at least a dozen empty crypts.
00:02:51And it's feared war will turn up as the probe continues.
00:02:54Deputies report that in some instances,
00:02:57only parts of a corpse had been removed.
00:02:59The head or in some cases, the extremities removed,
00:03:02the remainder of the corpse left intact.
00:03:05Evidence indicates the robberies have occurred
00:03:07over a period of time.
00:03:08Sheriff Jesus Maldonado refused to give details
00:03:11in the ghoulish case and said only that he did have strong evidence
00:03:15linking the crime to elements outside the state.
00:03:18Area residents have reportedly converged on the cemetery,
00:03:22fearing the remains of relatives have been removed.
00:03:25No suspects are in custody as the investigation
00:03:27at the scene continues.
00:03:30Oil storage units continue to burn out of control
00:03:33at the huge Texaco refinery near the Texas-Louisiana border.

00:03:40killing at least three workers and entering a vessel pool.
00:03:43Firefighting units from three Texas cities continue to battle
00:03:46the Holocaust in an effort to confine 40-foot flames.
00:03:50This smoke for the fire is visiting Houston residents
00:03:52some 60 miles to the south.
00:03:55Health officials in San Francisco reluctantly admit
00:03:58they may have a cholera epidemic on their hands.

00:04:25A second man allegedly threatened to leave to his death
00:04:28in the same window but was restrained by police.
00:04:31Witnesses to the incident reportedly urged the man to jump
00:04:34and responded to the arrival of the shooting
00:04:37in the area of the water and the hot water.
00:04:40The wife and the only teenage girl
00:04:41was taken over the hospital.

00:04:51and released.
00:04:53A 16-story building under construction in downtown Atlanta
00:04:56collapsed today, killing at least 29 persons.
00:05:00The engineering firm responsible for the structural design
00:05:03of the building, but offered no explanation for the collapse.
00:05:07The judge would say there's no much
00:05:10of a piece of the collapse and suspected of the sabotage.
00:05:14The police in Gary, Indiana, have been unable to identify
00:05:17the bodies of a young man or woman.
00:05:20The police first identified the victims as two women.
00:05:32The continuing swapping of all the American governments
00:05:35over the oil-rich regions of the upper Amazon
00:05:38today erupted into violence.

00:05:57Police in Dallas arrested a young couple today
00:06:00after complaints by neighbors led them to discover
00:06:02the 18-month-old daughter of the couple chained in the attic
00:06:06and the dilapidated house to come credit
00:06:08to the fringe of the downfield area.
00:06:10The legendary men came to the island.
00:06:13The going question.
00:06:18Franklin!
00:06:19This time...
00:06:20...the men on your feet.

00:06:32I'm all right over here.
00:06:33I'm all right over here.
00:06:34I live up to ten feet.
00:06:36Civil defense officials report five...
00:06:38This heat is just driving me crazy.
00:06:40I don't know if I can play much more on it.
00:06:42The condition of retrogradation is contrary or inharmonious
00:06:45to the regular direction of actual movement in the zodiac
00:06:49and is, in that respect, evil.
00:06:52Hence, when malefic planets are in retrograde
00:06:55and Saturn's malefic, okay,
00:06:57their malefice is increased.
00:06:59Have you been doing those Reader's Digest word power columns?
00:07:02Jerry, it just means Saturn's a bad influence.
00:07:04It's just particularly a bad influence now,
00:07:06because it's in retrograde.
00:07:09Hey, man, you believe all that stuff your old lady's talking to?
00:07:11I don't know.
00:07:12My granddaddy's buried here.
00:07:16Can we find out if anything happened to him?
00:07:18What's your granddaddy's name?
00:07:19Honey, that big, heavy fellow that's standing at that flashlight in his hand, that's a sheriff.
00:07:24You go tell him your granddaddy's buried in there.
00:07:26Okay.
00:07:26He'll let you in.
00:07:28Say, fella, I'm gonna run off with the girl a minute.
00:07:29You don't mind, do you?
00:07:30Honey, that's a sheriff.
00:07:31Hey, folks, let us through here.
00:07:32This girl's granddaddy's buried here.
00:07:33I've been in there the whole time.
00:07:34I've been in there the whole time.
00:07:35Nothing.
00:07:36I didn't know anything.
00:07:37I didn't know anything.
00:07:38Ah, things happen here about they don't tell about.
00:07:44He'll let you in.
00:07:46Say, fella, I'm gonna run off with the girl a minute.
00:07:47You don't mind, do you?
00:07:48Here come that fella, Adam.
00:07:50Hey, folks, let us through here.
00:07:51This girl's granddaddy is buried here.
00:07:53Been in there the whole time.
00:07:54Nothing been no...
00:07:55I didn't know anything.
00:07:56I didn't know anything.
00:07:57I didn't know anything.
00:07:58Ah, things happen here about.
00:08:01They don't tell about.
00:08:03I...
00:08:05I see things.
00:08:09You see...
00:08:11They say it's just an old man talking.
00:08:16You laugh at an old man.
00:08:20There's them that laughs and knows better.
00:08:31Yes, they're sure.
00:08:32The man said they could tell if the grave had been dug up.
00:08:35Franklin, don't worry.
00:08:37I saw it myself.
00:08:38He didn't look dug up to me.
00:08:40What's that?
00:08:46What smells?
00:08:47What is that stench?
00:08:51Roll up the window.
00:08:53Hey, that's the old slaughterhouse.
00:08:59That's where Grandpa used to sell his cattle.
00:09:02Hey, we got an uncle that works at one of those places outside of Fort Worth.
00:09:07Hey, you see those buildings there?
00:09:09That's where they kill them.
00:09:11They bash them in the head with a big sledgehammer.
00:09:13Oh, that's awful.
00:09:14It usually wouldn't kill them on the first leg.
00:09:16I mean, they'd start squealing and freaking out and everything.
00:09:19They'd have to come up and bash you two or three times.
00:09:21And then sometimes it wouldn't kill them.
00:09:22I mean, they'd skin them sometimes even before they were even dead.
00:09:23Oh, that's horrible.
00:09:24People shouldn't kill animals for food.
00:09:25Well, they don't do it like that anymore.
00:09:26Now they got this big air gun that shoots a bolt into their skull and then retracts it.
00:09:30It's just boom.
00:09:31It goes boom.
00:09:32It goes boom and sh-
00:09:37Franklin, I like me.
00:09:38Please change the subject.

00:10:14Should we pick him up?
00:10:15Oh, yeah, man. Pick him up. He'll have 68 out there.
00:10:17What does he look like?
00:10:18Well, the son of a bitch is gonna smell just like the slaughterhouse.
00:10:21Oh, give the guy a break. He can sit by Franklin.
00:10:24What do you want to do?
00:10:25Oh, he's weird, Brooklyn.
00:10:27No!
00:10:46I think we just picked up Drachlan.
00:10:49Where are you headed, man?
00:10:52South.
00:10:53You work at that place?
00:10:54Oh, no.
00:10:56How did you get stuck way out here?
00:10:58I was at the slaughterhouse.
00:11:00I got an uncle that works at the slaughterhouse.
00:11:02Hey, my brother worked there.
00:11:04My grandfather, too.
00:11:06My family's always been in me.
00:11:07My family's always been in me.
00:11:09My whole family of Drachlan.
00:11:11Hey, man, did you go in that slaughter room or whatever they call it?
00:11:15The place where they shoot the cattle in the head with that big air gun thing.
00:11:19Oh, that gun's no good.
00:11:21I was in there once with my uncle.
00:11:24No way.
00:11:25With a sledge.
00:11:26See, that was better.
00:11:27They died better that way.
00:11:28How come?
00:11:29I thought the gun was better.
00:11:30Oh, no.
00:11:31No.
00:11:32With a new way people put out jobs.
00:11:34You do that?
00:11:35Look.
00:11:36I was the killer.
00:11:37Damn.
00:11:38Let me see him.
00:11:39They don't send the heads away.

00:59:49According to Sheriff Jesus Maldonado, there were instances in which only the heads and extremities were removed,
00:59:54and others in which only a hand or foot is removed.
00:59:57The remainder of the cadaver left intact.
00:59:59Maldonado intended that he had information that he was robbed.
