00:00There are renewed calls from members of the public today for the police to clamp down on roadside touts after
00:07a group of windscreen cleaners attacked an elderly gentleman at the St. Agustin Lights on Thursday. The man is said
00:14to be a beggar. Police Commissioner Lister Guevaro confirms to TV6 News that the TTPS is investigating the incident.
00:22The commissioner tells TV6 a team of officers was sent to the location early this morning to apprehend the perpetrators,
00:30who appear to have gone into hiding. However, the top cop says officers will be utilizing all available resources, even
00:39covert methods, to locate the offenders.
00:41TV6 News visited the scene of the incident today and spoke with some of the young men who make a
00:49living cleaning windshields. They told TV6 News they're just trying to make an honest dollar.
00:56I don't know what he do because, as I said, I wasn't here. I didn't leave. I went home, so
01:01I can't really say I went home. But to the end of the day, he begging. He just be around
01:05me. And all I just let him know to the end.
01:07I don't know. All them beggars and them is, I'm not here. I'm not coming out here to beg. I'm
01:13wiping glass. I'm not pushing myself to the front. You know, he might smell away, whatever. I don't study that.
01:18We as good youths, we just try and I think sometimes we come in to wipe people's glass. And the
01:22behavior way, the more we feel, or whatever. But, you know, we looking, we intention is just to, let's make
01:29an honest living. We not really looking to do nobody, no harm out here.
01:33I have no more options than why I'm coming out here. Right? The, the, how to put it? The government
01:39not giving us options. We, in the sense of, alright, if all they want to take, if all they want
01:45to take, if all they want to take us off the streets and the government to take us off, take
01:48us off, off of the highway, right?
01:50To be hustling. It's a plenty. It's a plenty of business owners and things passing here. It's a plenty of
01:58high, high, high people in high society, that passing here, that could, could offer us job opportunities, could take us
02:06off of the streets and they just choose to complain like the rest instead of try to find a solution.
02:12So instead of, I, that's my point of view, I, instead of people looking for a problem in our hostel,
02:18look for a solution, find a solution for weeks.
02:20The incident has prompted some members of the public to call for a complete ban on the activity, but not
02:27everyone is wholly against it.
02:29I can't be mad with them because for the most part they're doing our job, which is not crime, and
02:34you can't be upset with people for making money, but sometimes it will be really out of hand.
02:38We are seeing people calling for the police to come down on this type of activity.
02:43Right.
02:43Oh, I think it's great. It's wonderful. I'm definitely going to give him a tip. He did a great service.
02:49You got to give them some work.
02:51Okay, so you support this type of activity?
02:53100%. I'm a foreigner. I support it.
