00:00The president of the Trinidad and Tobago National Nursing Association, Edie Stewart, says the association remains concerned over the resignation
00:08of the newly hired nurses at the NCRHA.
00:11Speaking with TV6 News by telephone, Stewart criticized a recent NCRHA media release, saying the authority initially denied reports that
00:21newly recruited nurses had resigned, but later acknowledged that three nurses had in fact left for what it described as
00:29personal reasons.
00:31In this latest scenario, the NCRHA, in their heading, refutes that three nursing personnel would have resigned. And then within
00:46the article, within the release, they have confirmed indeed that three of the newly hired nurses did indeed resign, but
00:56it was for personal reasons.
00:58Stewart accused the NCRHA of attempting to mislead the public and suggested a political influence may be shaping some of
01:07the authorities' public responses.
01:09Clearly, one can see it is definitely, it is being driven. One, it would appear that a politician is driving
01:21some of these releases. This is how politicians speak.
01:24They initially put out refuting the claims, and then within the documents, they indicate conclusively that yes, it is actually
01:36so, but the reasons are for different purposes.
01:41So it's really eye-opening. And it's not the first time, it's not the second time, it's a continued practice
01:47by the NCRHA to mislead the public.
01:52He also claimed that nurses and their colleagues have raised concerns about working conditions, including what he described as a
02:00dangerous nurse-to-patient ratio within the NCRHA.
02:03The association, nonetheless, is thankful that the authority has confirmed that indeed three of the newly hired nurses have left.
02:17We have spoken with some of these nurses and their colleagues, and their colleagues would have rightfully indicated why they
02:26would have left, notwithstanding whatever they told the employer to appease them.
02:31According to Stewart, the association expects more newly hired nurses to leave the institution, with some reportedly preferring to seek
02:39employment at other regional health authorities.
02:42We expect more of those newly hired nurses to continue leaving the institution, as they really have already appreciated the
02:57dangerous situations, the dangerous patient-to-nurse ratios that they are being placed with in the NCRHA,
03:05and they prefer to remain at home and seek employment in other more properly-run regional health authorities.
03:14He is again calling for the resignation of NCRHA Chairman Dr. Tim Gopi Singh,
03:19and is urging Health Minister Dr. Lacharambudo and Prime Minister Kamala Posada-Bissessa
03:25to intervene before the public health care system worsens.
