00:03The smiles and the enthusiasm were telling on the faces of pupils at the
00:08Irangwa's Islamia TIA school. It's the first time that all standards were able
00:13to participate in a career day which involves several service providers.
00:17Principal of the school Faisal Mustafa says the initiative was able to allow
00:22for a balance of information gathering and fun.
00:25Well, we have eight providers. What we did at this level, we looked at the protective
00:30services, the sports company, technology, and the health service providers. So we have police,
00:37fire, we have coast guard, we have lifeguards, we have the soldiers, we have the regional health
00:42authority, nurses, doctors, and so on. We are also represented by national flour mills.
00:48People's got to see training equipment used by lifeguards, including those in emergency
00:53situations. Water safety educator Alista Livingston says there was interest in the field.
01:00But lifeguards is something that a lot of kids haven't really been exposed to, like the police.
01:06So opening up their eyes to what the job and the job title entails, they actually got a little
01:15bit more interested in what it is about, right, and how excited it is, you know, to rescue somebody,
01:23use the jet ski, the diving gears.
01:26Technical marketing officer at NFM Heather Pair Antwine was there to enforce the importance of learning a skill.
01:33That a skill is a superpower. You can never take that away from an individual. So you could be a
01:39doctor, be a baker, you could be an attorney, and be a barber. You know, so that is what we
01:45are trying to encourage them to understand, especially in today's society, you need to have at least two forms of
01:51income.
01:52The children also had the opportunity to learn from animator Lyndon Joseph of Fire Animation, which is based locally and
01:59in Canada. According to him, inspiration in childhood can fuel the adult life.
02:05We have been doing careers for quite some time in particular, but we are also creating a training program for
02:13the kids because they seem to be very interested in this. So it's something that we are looking forward to.
02:19We also spoke to sport development coordinator at Sport TT, Andwale Wright, who at a time had engaged four standards
02:26at the school.
02:28We have football that we are doing to engage with them. We have also cricket, and then we have an
02:33educational session teaching them about the different careers in sport.
02:36As for what the school plans to do next?
02:39We are going to look at people in the tech voc area, all right, some more providers and technology and
02:45certainly in the service industry.
02:47And since we were on site, the children were elated to engage with us as well.
02:53A shout out to my parents. Hi, dad. Hi, stepmom. Hi, mom.
