00:00Shoppers were sent scampering this afternoon as gunshots erupted in the car park of the
00:05Long Circular Mall in St. James. According to police reports, at about 12.55pm, security
00:11guards were at the compound treating with a cash delivery when they heard the screams
00:15of a woman. Upon investigating, they saw a man holding a gun and assaulting a woman on
00:20the eastern side of the car park. He appeared to be taking her Nissan Tida. The officers
00:25intervened and ordered the man to stop. However, he allegedly pointed his weapon at the officers
00:31who, fearing for their own lives and the lives of nearby citizens, took cover and opened fire.
00:37There was a brief exchange of gunfire following which the suspect fell to the ground, bleeding
00:43from multiple injuries. His weapon, which lay on the ground next to him, was secured by
00:49the officers and later handed over to the police. One security officer, police said, suffered
00:55minor injuries during the ordeal. The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Likimus
01:01Murphy of Bournes Road in St. James. His relatives were shocked to hear of the allegations of a
01:06robbery. They said Murphy operated a mini-mart in the gallery of his home. However, police
01:12said that Murphy was known to them as a suspect in several criminal offenses and he had even
01:18been recently charged and brought before the courts. Murphy was the father of two girls,
