00:00big news from the national football league though we were waiting to see what the destination would
00:04be for wide receiver stefan diggs and now it seems pretty clear he'll be playing in the nfl this
00:09season he was found not guilty of assaulting his private chef in a paid dispute back in december
00:15he pleaded not guilty just before the super bowl in february the trial lasted two days he's currently
00:21a free agent but this would pave the way it would appear for diggs to probably get another one year
00:26deal in the national football league meanwhile the landscape of college football ever changing
00:30could be changing yet again get ready could be a 2014 college football playoff the american football
00:36coaches association proposed four changes to the calendar which include increasing the amount of
00:42playoff teams and also ending the season earlier so it would begin early in december and end in late
00:49january and also the bye weeks would be reduced from two to one and games could be played during army
00:54navy football weekend which almost we've never seen happen i think in the history over 100 years
01:00of that game in the nba last night no drama just wins that's the way things happen when favorites
01:05cover the pistons did so against the calves 111 to 101 they were three and a half point favorites
01:11and basically cruised through this one kate cunningham had 23 points tobias harris had 20 on the side of
01:18cleveland it was donovan mitchell with 23 points but naturally this is going to be a long series
01:24says jb bickerstaff understanding what the moment needs and what's called for and then having the
01:31poise and confidence to go and execute it and you know playing in three basically elimination games
01:36you understand that you understand you know how important starts are the urgency you understand you
01:42know how to close and how to finish and how to get to your spots and then you grow belief
01:46that you
01:46can and i think that series did a lot of that for us the aim is to wear you down
01:51as much as we
01:51possibly can um you know we want to be as physical with you as we can we want to put
01:56our body on you
01:57as much as we can uh pick you up full court as much as we can uh and then make
02:02this you know it's about
02:03a series right it's not just one game and there's quick turnarounds right so now you know can we force
02:08your legs to be a little bit heavy uh because we're putting that weight on you we're putting that
02:12pressure on you um and see if we can wear you down over a series but it's not easy right
02:17it's not easy
02:17uh and we know this is going to be a long tough series for us um but we got to
02:22know and believe
02:22in our system and who we are that second half better again first half was was it wasn't just
02:29their bigs i thought just overall they were more forceful more energy i thought we you know again
02:35much better in the second half but um you know energy scale of one to ten they were nine and
02:43a half
02:43we were probably at a seven and that's you know it's tough to um tough to win on the road
02:49with that
02:49kind of disparity we'll see if cleveland can get a win this weekend meanwhile no problem for the thunder
02:55over the lakers they win in cover 18 point that was the difference thunder beat the lakers 108 to 90
03:01despite shea gilgis alexander having just 18 points in this one first time that he scored under 20
03:08since last may not a perfect game though for oklahoma city despite the 18 point win so that's
03:14the focus of head coach mark dagno i thought collectively like i just said we could have been
03:19better um it obviously wasn't clean uh it was a little clunky that could have been how quickly
03:24they changed the scheme it could i thought we were like a little fast to begin the game anyways that
03:28might have just been the layoff we just haven't played a game in eight days so uh that's some of
03:32it
03:32but i told the team and i i feel this way like um you can't be greedy with a playoff
03:37win
03:38you know and that was not a perfect game there's a lot of playoff games that are not perfect the
03:41other team's trying their best to squeeze you and make you very uncomfortable um and so we won an
03:47imperfect game tonight and that's a good thing thank you i don't think there was a turning point um
03:53i think it was a general um theme throughout the night when we made game plan mistakes they hurt us
04:02um i thought the houston game five was the most game plan mistakes we made in in a in a
04:11playoff game
04:11so far um we obviously lost that game uh you're playing the the world champs your margin for error
04:19in terms of mistakes is not that high you can make mistakes there's a basketball's a game full mistakes
04:24just too many tonight uh we got to clean that up um but you know there were some some good
04:30things we
04:30won't expect to score uh you know held shea under 20 he ended up with seven turnovers um the guys
04:37played hard uh we just got to do a better job with execution it comes down to just the attention
04:41to
04:42detail on that and i know we'll clean things up and be better not a great start for the lakers
04:48we do
04:48have two game twos tonight in the east and the west 76ers and knicks they'll tip off early and
04:54then the late game is timberwolves and spurs that's where we stand in the nba all right now let's get
04:59to major league baseball some big news in terms of injury the houston astros season which is going
05:05south quickly looks like it may have taken its final turn carlos correa surgery on his left ankle
05:11he says he's out for the season he injured his ankle swinging in the cages before tuesday's game
05:16the astros certainly will miss him this season they've already put hunter brown on the injured
05:21list as well as tatsui emaya it's been a really tough go for the astros who are playing last place
05:27baseball currently all right on the flip side the cubs win again this is their seventh win in a row
05:32they beat the reds in 10 innings alex bregman drove in a run and it was michael bush delivering
05:38the walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to get the win it's been a great run for
05:42chicago
05:43and a couple of back-to-back wins here's craig council on that yeah they've been they both
05:49two two really good games i mean i remember thinking actually uh you know in the ninth
05:55inning yesterday before we scored like this is this has been a really good ball game um
06:00and um yeah just two well played games i think
06:04you know it's it's when this is the home team home team stuff you know this is when it's good
06:09to be
06:09the home team and you got your last crack at it um you know we we created a lot of
06:15opportunities as
06:16the game went on you know fourth fifth sixth i think seventh and ninth i think we created like
06:25multiple runners on base and um didn't necessarily get the big hit but we pitched so well that uh you
06:33know we we got the job done and we're able to tie the game and so um and then it's
06:39just the pitching
06:40man we stayed in the game with the pitching the pitching was was incredible the bullpen was incredible
06:44today and um got ourselves another win one of the hottest teams in the national leagues of
06:49philadelphia phillies ever since they fired rob thompson and brought don mattingly in they just keep
06:53winning they win over the a's nine to one yesterday bryce harper is now homered in back-to-back
06:58games he had two home runs yesterday in the win and bryson stott says that harper's come up in some
07:05big moments he's bryce harper um he's not gonna um dwell on anything or or anything like that and
07:14he knows he's a superstar in this league and a two-time mvp for a reason and um just the
07:20confidence
07:20that he brings um to the batter's box i think you can kind of feel it um and you can
07:27see it obviously
07:27with days like today and um it's kind of always the same guy whether he has two hummers or he's
07:34over two at the time and um i think he can learn a lot from it meanwhile shohei otani did
07:41his best
07:41cy young award impression yesterday he's having that kind of season but he did not get the win
07:45seven innings pitch first time this season eight strikeouts two runs the astros win
07:49two to one matt olsen is having some season this year go ahead home run four runs driven in his
07:56past
07:56five he's been on fire the braves beat the mariners out west three to two and tampa bay defeats
08:02toronto four to three they win as home favorites the rays have been playing some great baseball as
08:06well yankees win and royals win yesterday also as home favorites all right let's get to the stanley
08:13cup playoffs here the colorado avalanche they dominate again they take a 2-0 lead over the
08:17minnesota wild in their best of seven series also two games tonight in the stanley cup playoff
08:24chase we've got the montreal canadians taking on the buffalo sabers and the vegas golden knights
08:30they lead the ducks 1-0 in their best of seven series as well all right welcome back to newswire
08:36here on sports great great to catch up with sam mcquillen from legal sports report we dive into
08:40the latest in sports betting and prediction markets and that's probably a good place to start
08:44sam thanks for coming on the show all right you can read about this story over at legal sports
08:48report.com sam and i discussing the national football league as far as prediction markets are
08:54concerned the nfl has been the one league sam that has been sort of steadfast against incorporating
09:00these prediction markets we've seen basically every other league come around to them a little bit but
09:06the question is will that change
09:11yeah it's a good observation craig you've had now the nba mlb has gone really far too embracing these
09:18prediction markets i think nhl was probably the first league uh that really kind of just
09:23acknowledged them in the first place but uh then you have to look at okay you have all these leagues
09:28who is embracing it why are they embracing it how is what they said changed and then you have the
09:34nfl
09:34which is always regarded you know by everybody by you know people in media by sports books by everyone
09:40as by far and away the biggest league uh the league that quite frankly doesn't need prediction markets
09:46maybe as much as a major league baseball and uh the sport is different so maybe it's not as conducive
09:52to live betting as as it would be in the mlb but uh for the nfl they've played their cards
09:57very close to their
09:58chest um they have been skeptical and come out and said some things in the past they've you know talked
10:03to
10:03congress about being worried that they don't have the same protections that sports books have uh they've even uh written
10:09letters to some of these prediction market companies as well saying we're concerned about the potential
10:15for markets on injuries officiating which is a lot of the concerns that the other leagues have put out
10:20there as well and quite frankly not what i would think would be a huge point of contention for a
10:25company like kalshi or polymarket if you know they want to continue operating in the us i don't think it
10:29would really go over well whether or not it'd be legal uh to offer those kinds of markets um what
10:35leagues
10:35like the nba who've kind of changed their stances what they've done is try to assert some more of
10:41that league element league control in it like if this is gonna happen we should get a bite of the
10:46revenue not dissimilar from what they did with sports books you know famously every league was
10:51against that and once they realized they could make money out of it uh the thing really changed
10:55there so i think the conversation for the nfl uh comes to to money and revenue right the league
11:01doesn't need this so how much money is the nfl going to be able to squeeze out of it
11:05and i think by playing their cards very close to their chest again they're one of the only leagues
11:09that hasn't submitted a formal comment to the cftc asking for how they're going to regulate it i think
11:15that's really telling and it's obviously the biggest league we're not talking about a smaller league like
11:20the mls declining and i think they come from a standpoint of just a lot more bargaining power and
11:26i'd be shocked if that stance doesn't evolve throughout the rest of the year ahead of next football
11:31season because remember last football season was really only the first time we had this stuff
11:35fully available now they've got some time before the next one launches to maybe figure out some
11:40more relationships partnerships etc and just how much revenue the league can take a chunk out of
11:46lieutenant governor dan patrick in texas always a hot button lieutenant governor has tried to push
11:53hard against sports betting in the state of texas so sam it should come as to no surprise that he's
11:59trying to now get prediction markets to leave his state as well yeah it's definitely not a surprise
12:07that you know the person who's blocked sports betting forever in texas is also not in favor of sports
12:13event contracts which if you listen to anybody at these companies talk about them like draft kings just
12:18this week said it's pretty much just the same thing from a user experience so what he's done is he's
12:24directed a group of senators to figure out how to close gambling loopholes that have allowed kalshi
12:30polymarket and now draft kings and fandu with their own prediction markets to operate these sports betting
12:35products in the lone star state but again products they assert are not sports betting and are actually
12:41financial derivative instruments that are legally permissible to trade and so the question there becomes
12:48does what he's doing actually will that actually matter will it actually have any teeth it's one
12:53thing to say you're against something it's a lot easier when you have to pass a bill to get in
12:56front
12:56of that and stop it that way but if sports event contracts have been allowed to kind of persist in
13:02a
13:02lot of these states without that changing uh it might not really matter what the governor cares about
13:06so i think that's really interesting especially with texas when you talk about okay they're not able to
13:12stop sports betting they are able to stop sports betting in their state but they're not able to
13:16stop these prediction markets from doing it does that potentially speed up the timeline where texas
13:21is open to sports betting you've had the governor in you know recent months say that he's more open
13:27to it than he has been but you know it kind of is still on the fence and maybe now
13:30isn't the right
13:31time does now become the right time when the lieutenant governor who is again really the the main reason
13:36texas has not legalized sports betting when he realizes that he can't stop draft kings and fanduel
13:41from operating anyway at least until the supreme court does something which you never know when
13:46that's going to be does now kind of become the time where texas considers uh legislation a little
13:50you know more seriously um we don't have many states left but obviously texas and california are
13:55the real big ones so i think that's kind of the interesting part of this whole prediction market
13:59debate as well as just not being able to stop them kind of speed up that timeline all right let's
14:04now
14:04move back east to washington dc where i gaming is always a hot button topic and naturally this is a
14:11state that would like to legalize and regulate some more casinos there what does this bill exactly
14:16entail and what chance do we have to see it move forward yeah washington dc not just because it's you
14:24know not a state and it's a jurisdiction on its own has been really interesting in terms of its gaming
14:29laws sports betting and now i casino which it's considering as well only a few states have this product
14:35which you can play blackjack on your phone table games on your phone but we're seeing now dc becoming
14:42a lot more warmer to this kind of opportunity or idea because mainly they're losing tax revenue to the
14:49black market that's the big kind of core argument from supporters like councilman kenny mcduffie who has
14:55this new bill he's saying people are already gambling online people are already you know going to neighboring
15:00states uh as well uh to do online casino and you know for companies like draft kings and fandle which
15:06continue to do sports betting and not predictions online casino is really the end game for them again
15:11you know the the margins they make on online casino are way higher than sports betting i think
15:16the average sports betting hold uh last nfl season was around 10 percent and on table games on your phone
15:24it's about 50 so they make a lot more money and in turn the state would make a lot more
15:29money from
15:29taxing as well that's really his big argument here you know that has not voted well in other states
15:35over the years but this could finally be the time if dc obviously a very special kind of place if
15:41they
15:42pass something but a neighboring state like maryland or virginia also pass something you know they see
15:47the residents leaving to another state and then enter an online casino legislation really picks up so
15:52it's another kind of more interesting story more subtle within the whole prediction market debate
15:56that we're following for the rest of the year all right sam great stuff as always we'll catch you
16:01again later in the week here on newswire thanks for coming on
16:06all right sam mcquillen with us from legal sports report all right going back to some baseball in case
16:11you missed it last night shohei otani making a big push toward the national league cy young award it
16:17seems like the dodgers and otani really want him to get this thing now he did lose yesterday and he
16:22gave up two runs but he spoke to the media afterward and talked about his start i know you've been
16:28very
16:28clear about wanting to do what's best for the team and whatever the team decides but
16:32is it hard at all in a tight game like this to not be able to affect it on the
16:36offensive side
16:37um you know i think it's uh offense including myself hasn't done a great job uh scoring runs and if
16:46there was a situation where you know if i was hitting well um i'm sure the team would want me
16:51to pitch and hit as well but i i understand in a situation where hey just focus on pitching
16:57um you know turn the page on the hitting i i understand that the team is uh you know might
17:03think
17:03like that it's an interesting conversation to have because when otani's in the lineup they're
17:09obviously a lot better by the way later today otani back for the los angeles dodgers he will be
17:15in their lineup later this afternoon all right plenty more to get to here on the show as we dive
17:21into the national basketball association last night some really big wins especially for the
17:26oklahoma city thunder no uh drawback from them they win pistons win and so the two series are already
17:33moving toward two o's potentially we'll see if the same thing happens tonight
17:38you
