00:00Let's get to the NBA because we start off with a major issue
00:02or maybe even an injury in the National Basketball Association.
00:05Will Cade Cunningham be around for the playoffs?
00:08Man, the Pistons hope so.
00:10He's been diagnosed with a collapsed lung,
00:12and he should miss an extended period of time because that's what happens.
00:15The playoffs start April 18th, and who knows if Cunningham will be around.
00:20They're 49-19.
00:21They're the top team in the East, but they're not winning the East without Cunningham.
00:25He's been arguably one of the top three or four players in the entire NBA this season,
00:29so really tough news for Detroit.
00:31We'll have an update on this tomorrow.
00:33Meanwhile, we have 14 minutes until tip-off in the East region.
00:38If you have not filled out your brackets, you still have time,
00:42but they're about to close out here because TCU is going to take on Ohio State.
00:46The Buckeyes are two-and-a-half-point favorites, total of 146-and-a-half,
00:51and you can best be assured that on this show here on Newswire,
00:55we will give you live scoring updates throughout the day.
00:57Meanwhile, the disrespect for Miami, Ohio proved to be unfounded.
01:02They easily beat SMU yesterday as seven-point underdogs.
01:06They won 89-79, and Red Hawks shot 39% from three-point range.
01:12So now with their win, they're moving on, and they're actually in the tournament,
01:15the field of 64, and they'll play the number six seed Tennessee,
01:18and that game will be on Friday in the Midwest region.
01:24And here is Travis Steele, the head coach of Miami, Ohio.
01:28Appreciated all the Miami fans showing out tonight.
01:31In a lot of ways, it was a home game for us.
01:33You know, it's such a unique opportunity to come watch an NCAA tournament game.
01:36We're only 50 minutes away from campus, so very, very appreciative of that.
01:41But again, listen, we have great players, and I've been saying this the whole year,
01:44but we have better human beings.
01:45Our guys play for one another.
01:47They play the right way.
01:48I think we finished with 20 assists, four turnovers on the game.
01:51My goal is to get up at least 40 threes, shot 41 threes.
01:56And I felt like if we could just neutralize them on the glass,
01:59because they are so big and they're athletic and they're tough,
02:04I thought we'd give ourselves a really good opportunity to come away with a win,
02:07which we ended up being even on the glass 35-35.
02:12The message I gave our guys before the game was to be,
02:15there should be leave no doubt with who the more attacking team was.
02:18And I thought that was very evident from the jump ball all the way to the very end of the
02:22game.
02:22But really proud of our guys.
02:23Obviously, there's a lot left to be done yet.
02:26Well, we're very proud of these players seated next to me and the rest of our team.
02:31We had a really good year at SMU.
02:34Made March Madness first time in nine years at the school.
02:36So they meant a lot to this program, especially Boopy and BJ and Sumet, the returnees.
02:41And, of course, Corey and Jerron and Sam were transfers that came this year.
02:47And to do what they did, win 20 games and compete at the highest level.
02:53Obviously, BJ's not up here.
02:55He had that serious injury and tried to get back.
02:57But overall, just a terrific season.
03:00These guys mean so much to our program and the Dallas community.
03:06So just very proud of them.
03:07Tonight didn't go our way.
03:08Miami played an outstanding basketball game.
03:11We had our chances.
03:13Meanwhile, Prairie View A&M get used to hearing their name for the next 48 hours.
03:18They're advanced and at least going to have a shot to keep things competitive with the Florida Gators
03:24as they take care of Lehigh.
03:2667 to 55, they were slight underdogs in this game.
03:31And so now they take on the defending champion Gators.
03:34Here's Byron Smith, the head coach of Prairie View, on that challenge.
03:37I forgot what happened.
03:40Did we just win again?
03:42That's how quickly.
03:43You have to move on.
03:44You're already thinking about this deal right here.
03:47That's already on my mind how we're going to be.
03:49But what can we do against a machine like that?
03:52But we will show up and we'll put our best foot forward.
03:55And we'll see where we are.
03:56But obviously, I'm going to try to enjoy it.
03:59You know, with our players tonight, our esteemed A.D. here, who's kind of escorting me tonight.
04:05It makes me feel special when your boss kind of walks in with you, Anton Goff.
04:08So I'm excited that he's here.
04:10But we're going to go in and do the very best we can and just try to keep the same
04:13moving.
04:13And ultimately demanded so much traffic on a night where we needed to play really well.
04:19And we just didn't necessarily shoot the ball as well as we needed to.
04:23But this moment and this disappointment doesn't define the season that we had.
04:28And it doesn't define these young men, their productivity, as strong as they played.
04:32And I couldn't be more proud of them.
04:35I couldn't be more proud of the way in which they represented Lehigh University.
04:39And I care a great deal about each and every one of them.
04:43And Lehigh had a nice season.
04:44They just came up short, of course, in the field of 68.
04:48Is this ever going to be 72?
04:50Got to be kidding me.
04:50Let's keep it 64, 68.
04:53Cleveland Browns in the news for a different reason.
04:56They submitted a rule that will allow teams to trade draft picks five years out instead of three.
05:01Currently, three is the maximum.
05:03We'll see if that does go to five.
05:0424 of the 32 teams need to approve this.
05:07I'm not really sure I feel a certain way about it.
05:10But OK, Browns want to do it.
05:11I know how I feel about this.
05:13The faster we get to football, the better around here.
05:15September the 9th is the first game of the NFL season.
05:18Wall Street Journal made the official report.
05:21Seahawks will open the season on Wednesday.
05:24And then Rams 49ers from Melbourne, Australia is that international game on Thursday.
05:31And as of right now, they're not going to place games on Friday night because of high school football.
05:35It's just the way that this works.
05:36That's going to change probably in the future, too.
05:38But that's where we stand for now.
05:39So the NFL season begins Wednesday, continues Thursday, and then on to Sunday for now.
05:43But it could be Saturday for all we know.
05:45Fox Corporation and Calci, they're in serious talks for a significant partnership.
05:49This is not surrounding sports betting.
05:51This is surrounding Fox News, Fox Weather, predictions on news and weather, showing them on the screen.
05:59And Calci has deals with CNN and CNBC.
06:03And by the way, this comes a day after Arizona filed criminal charges against Calci.
06:07So who even knows if this comes to fruition?
06:09All right.
06:10The red-hot Atlanta Hawks probably flying under the radar for a lot of people in the NBA these days.
06:14They won again, 11 in a row.
06:16They beat the Mavericks 135 to 120.
06:19They were eight and a half road favorites because Dallas doesn't care very much at this point.
06:26But Quinn Snyder does.
06:27Congrats to him.
06:28And he talked about winning his 11th in a row last night.
06:30The play that stood out late to me was when Onyeka got the ball in the post and just had
06:36great poise.
06:38And Nikhil ended up getting a screen and got a three.
06:42And so it's not necessarily who has the ball, but we need to keep playing that way.
06:48The guys that are trying to generate an advantage in the action, it might be for them, but it might
06:52be for someone else.
06:53And if we do that, we're much more efficient because the defense can't lock in.
07:00So I was happy with that.
07:29Yeah, I thought it was a business-like effort by the team.
07:33When it comes to your habits, you're getting better or worse every night.
07:36And we get better tonight, which is a credit to the guys.
07:39I thought we played in character the whole game on both ends of the floor.
07:44Good contributions from everybody, but most importantly, played to our identity and played to our habits.
07:51And Oklahoma City still on top of the West.
07:53Meanwhile, the Lakers beat the Rockets 124-116.
07:57Luka Doncic had 40 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists.
08:00And the Celtics beat the Golden State Warriors in Boston.
08:05Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:06Prediction Market's also going to be very popular this time of the year with the NCAA Tournament.
08:10For that and a whole lot more, let's bring in Robert Linehan of Sports Radar
08:13to break down the latest, Calci, Polymarket, and everybody else involved in that space.
08:18Thanks, Robert. Great to have you back once again here on the show.
08:21Look, I mean, not quite the huge blow yet for Prediction Markets,
08:27but certainly the state of Arizona, I guess, Robert, has seen enough.
08:30They have taken their own ball and said, we're going home from you.
08:35Basically, you don't get to play in our state anymore.
08:38Led by their attorney general, Chris Mays, filing criminal charges
08:44against Calci for operating in their state.
08:47And so, look, Robert, this is just the story that just keeps happening.
08:52We've seen other states with cease and desist and this working out.
08:55Talk to me about why this happened specifically in Arizona
08:58and what it means moving forward.
09:01Sure. Well, thanks for having me, Craig.
09:03Always a pleasure being on.
09:04Who would have thought that Arizona would be the epicenter of all of the legal battles
09:11regarding Prediction Markets in the country here?
09:14But, yes, you're correct.
09:15Attorney General Chris Mays is the first, basically the first state now,
09:20to levy criminal charges against a Prediction Market company.
09:25Earlier this week, she filed 20 criminal counts against Calci,
09:31the Prediction Market company, basically alleging that it runs and operates
09:36an illegal gambling company in the state.
09:39She says they don't have a license to do so.
09:42Among the counts that they're being charged with are, of course,
09:47sport event contracts, several counts, and several counts of election betting.
09:53Interestingly enough, this came four days after Calci
09:58filed a preemptive lawsuit against the state of Arizona,
10:03which also included Attorney General Chris Mays,
10:06basically saying the company says that, look, due to some actions in the past,
10:10due to the cease and desist letter sent by Arizona,
10:13that we have to take legal action to preserve our business
10:18and preserve our right to offer these sports event contracts
10:22to the people of Arizona.
10:25Calci, the Calci CEO, Tarek Mansour, has basically said this is nonsense,
10:31that it's almost a little bit of gamesmanship from the Attorney General.
10:37You know, as is every single case, almost every single lawsuit,
10:41this really just boils down to, look, who has regulatory power
10:46over these prediction markets, over sport event contracts.
10:51The states say they have the power to regulate them.
10:54Calci and all the other prediction market companies say,
10:57we don't talk to the states.
10:59We're not under their power.
11:00We're under the federal government's power.
11:03We're under the CFTC regulatory power.
11:07So, look, where this goes, I'm not exactly sure.
11:12I'm not a lawyer.
11:12I'm certainly not an Attorney General.
11:14But it just all seems to be coming to a potential head.
11:19I mean, is there any way this does not end up in the Supreme Court in 2027?
11:26It's just that's where it's going.
11:27That's where it's going to lead.
11:29And until they and until the Supreme Court levies some kind of understanding
11:35or ruling on who actually has the regulatory power over these markets,
11:40you're going to be seeing these charges in other states.
11:42There seems like there's another lawsuit either filed by Calci
11:48or one of the prediction market companies
11:49or filed by an Attorney General against one of these prediction market companies every week.
11:55So it's all coming to a head.
11:56I don't think you're going to see anything prior to 2027.
11:59I think that's probably the earliest the Supreme Court could potentially hear something on this.
12:04But this is just where it's all heading.
12:06And this is just the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of prediction markets
12:12and sport event contracts in this country.
12:15Yeah, no end or clarity anytime soon, it would appear.
12:20So that means that some states and some U.S. senators have to get involved with at least
12:26trying on their own to regulate some of these things to avoid some very significant issues here.
12:32And a senator named Chris Murphy, Robert, has introduced a banning event trading on sensitive operations,
12:39which does make sense.
12:41We heard of a journalist being threatened over some of this stuff.
12:44No predicting acts of terrorism, assassinations, war.
12:49I mean, it's crazy that we even have to bring this up.
12:52But naturally, this is the world we're living in here.
12:55I mean, this could have so many different ramifications surrounding it.
13:00Absolutely.
13:01You've seen a number of federal bills being introduced regarding prediction markets and sport event contracts.
13:09This particular bill, the Betsoff bill, doesn't have anything to do with sport event contracts,
13:14but it certainly is regarding something that you've seen come up with in the last month,
13:19where you've seen anonymous users of, it's mostly been polymarket,
13:26where people have made, in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars purchasing event contracts
13:34based off of U.S. military actions or foreign country actions.
13:42You saw, because of the U.S., someone made, I believe, about $500,000
13:48when the U.S. obviously took some military action against Venezuela and its president.
13:56Another user made several hundred thousand dollars after the airstrikes against Iran
14:04that killed their leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini.
14:07And basically, you know, some of these people in the federal government are saying,
14:12we can't have this.
14:13We can't have people that may have insider knowledge on these events, on these actions,
14:19making money off of this.
14:21This is ridiculous.
14:22So basically, that's what that Betsoff Act would prohibit.
14:26It wouldn't allow prediction market companies to offer any contracts dealing with war, terrorism, assassinations,
14:33and it certainly would not allow contracts where one individual in the government would have insider knowledge
14:40or any type of influence on the outcome of a government action.
14:45So it'll be interesting to see if this passes.
14:47I think you'll absolutely see several other federal bills come up involving prediction markets.
14:54There are already several that, you know, one completely prohibits event contract, sport event contract trading.
15:03There's another similar bill that would prohibit all-in-one sport event contract trading
15:08and then acts of terrorism and war.
15:11So this is certainly something that is being seen by people in the federal government.
15:16They want to put a stop to certain events, certain contracts.
15:20And I think, you know, absolutely nothing may happen.
15:24So we'll see where it goes.
15:26Let's get to Colorado real quick, Robert, here.
15:28It seems like the state, like other states, wants to, at the very least, eliminate prop bets.
15:33But something that's also come up quite a bit is the use of credit cards.
15:37And some states have already banned the use of credit cards.
15:41And I guess Colorado will probably have less pushback on that than the prop bets.
15:44It seems like that's one that's going through and passing in a lot of places, right?
15:48Absolutely.
15:49This particular bill that was moved forward by the Colorado Senate Finance Committee
15:54is a bill that basically sort of revamps the state's sports betting protections.
15:59Like you mentioned, it would prohibit credit cards to be used to fund accounts.
16:05It would prohibit push notifications regarding bets and promos to be sent to users' phones, things of that nature.
16:12But then also there are two particular aspects of the bill that seem to have some people up in arms,
16:20mainly, like you mentioned, the complete elimination of the prop betting market in the state,
16:24and another that would eliminate sports betting ads from the airwaves in the state from 8 a.m. to 10
16:32p.m.
16:32on every single day and from any live sporting event in the state.
16:39Obviously, this moved forward, but a lot of the senators that voted for it said that, look,
16:43you've got to work on these other two things.
16:45It's going to – it may be impossible to institute that ban on sports betting advertisements.
16:52Federally, there may be federal regulations that come in with that.
16:55And also, if you eliminate the prop betting market, you're basically taking away $3 million a year in sports betting
17:03tax revenues
17:04that are used to support the state's water program.
17:08So it moved forward, but there's definitely going to be some tinkering before it actually gets in front of the
17:15governor for any chance of it.
17:18Always appreciate the insight, Robert, on sports betting and prediction markets.
17:22Have a great rest of your week.
17:23Thanks again.
17:25Thank you, guys.
17:25Have a great rest of your time.
