00:00and let's get started with it looks like some finality here for Terry Rozier two more indictments
00:05a former NBA player has now a bribery and honest service wire against him he's facing four federal
00:12charges looks like his career is over on Thursday federal prosecutors say that Rozier accepted
00:17$70,000 in bribes as part of a sports betting scheme tied to a 2023 game when he played for
00:22the Hornets allegedly agreeing to leave a game against the Pelicans so gamblers could profit
00:28on his stats and his unders naturally Rozier is denying all of these charges but more allegations
00:34coming in against him meanwhile the NBA has decided that the tanking has just simply gone too far the
00:40board of governors is passing new anti-tanking rules that will include expanding the lottery from 14 to
00:4616 teams and actually a relegation zone how about that where the bottom three teams in the league
00:52with the worst records get penalized and have lessened chances for the number one overall pick
00:57and some flattened odds the board of governors passed 29 to 1 so here we go no more tanking
01:03at least if you're looking for that first pick or the most lottery ping pong balls moving forward
01:09all right as I mentioned the San Antonio Spurs really did a good job last night game not really close
01:14118 to 91 never really felt like SGA and company were into this one in fact he just had 15
01:22points on
01:23six for 18 shooting did SGA Victor Wimbayama had 28 points 10 rebounds three blocks and now they'll
01:30head back to Oklahoma City for a decisive game seven here is Mitch Johnson and they always say game seven
01:39is the very best line in sports and I guess Mitch agrees um tonight was do or die and I
01:45think a lot of
01:45fans are going to be happy they say that's the best line in sports I believe so we'll be prepared
01:52take the
01:53next 40 hours or whatever it may be to try to get ready get organized and get ready to go
02:00into a hostile
02:01environment against the defending champs in the western conference finals for a team that's done it
02:05multiple times it knows exactly what they're gonna um what it takes and I would expect to get their best
02:12punch we're gonna go with our eyes wide open and expecting nothing less you you won a game seven
02:19versus Denver versus Indiana is that sort of a positive that you can glean from this game just
02:26knowing that you guys have bounced back from you know a bad game six before yeah I mean we've had
02:31a
02:31lot of experiences to this point and the one thing that we've learned more than anything is like every
02:35game has a new life every game is earned you know if you want to win it uh game seven
02:39will be no
02:40different you know this is obviously a quality opponent we have to play obviously a lot better
02:45than we did tonight and we understand that from a number of experiences so um you know we'll get off
02:51our feet tomorrow we'll get some rest and recovery learn from the tape take the lessons from tonight
02:55that are relevant uh for game seven and be ready to go out there and throw our best punch
03:00simply put Wemby had his big playoff moment coming through in the clutch and playing desperate as he
03:06says that's what they needed to pick up the win last night what does playing desperate look like
03:11to you and when both teams obviously everyone's playing card in playoffs just feels like all it
03:17erases kind of all the old mistakes that we built that are our human nature
03:25obviously in the regular season all the previous games
03:30just gotta fight that other type and you know backs against the wall it feels like it's the best
03:35opportunity to enter the belt let's go ahead go meanwhile the thunder have done a good job bouncing
03:41back after losses that's what they'll need to do saturday says shea gilgis alexander when i hear you
03:48say that i mean you guys obviously went through the ringer with a couple game sevens last year but do
03:52you
03:52feel like these spurs that they're the toughest challenge you guys have faced as a group so far
03:59um i don't know they're up there for sure indiana and denver where we're pretty tough
04:06um taking us to game seven probably the common denominator with those groups
04:09but yeah they're a very tough team really good team especially this late in the season you're
04:13gonna play teams of this caliber it's no surprise um and yeah when you're on a playoff run you you
04:19run
04:19in the teams that are very good especially when you get this late and however many games it takes
04:24however many games it takes so nba previews coming this weekend here on sports grid now let's get to
04:29some results from major league baseball last night wouldn't you know the cubs are appearing to be
04:34back on track they took care of business against paul skeins seven to two the final skeins did strike
04:38out ten over five and a third but he's lost his last three starts ian happ was three for five
04:43with
04:43a home run and colin ray did a good job pitching against pittsburgh here is skipper craig council on getting
04:49the win against the pirates i mean look i think when you you know you go up against uh skeins
04:55you
04:55you know you got to be good and i think um colin did a really nice job tonight um
05:02and you know gave us a shot and we we kind of had a weird offensive day but against skeins
05:08but we did
05:08enough right and just put some pressure on it was it was really difficult to see for the hitters in
05:13the first couple innings that bright background and it was very challenging the vision was very
05:18challenging but um you know we did enough and it wasn't necessarily pretty um but you know you're
05:24they got bullpen up in the sixth inning and and um we made some good things happen meanwhile on the
05:30other side of chicago the cubs beat the twins six to two they were home favorites and win relatively
05:35easily because davis martin is having an incredible season heading toward maybe an all-star game six
05:41innings pitched five strikeouts he's now tied with chris sale for the second most wins
05:45in major league baseball with eight randall gritchick also drove in three runs here's
05:48gritchick after the game saying the white socks are coming through with a bunch of different guys
05:52there's a different player just stepping up in a big moment how much of that goes into just the
05:57communication and the preparation within the clubhouse well that's huge i mean it's one of
06:00those things where you know you don't have to be the guy every night um every night like you said
06:03it's somebody different uh you know we have a few guys that can drive the ball out of the ballpark
06:07but we also have some guys that can scrap out at bats uh steal some bags and and drive in
06:11guys so
06:12you know we win um in different facets and it's been awesome to be a part of braves win the
06:17series
06:17against the red sox ronald acuna jr hits a grand slam 10 to 2 the final and ozzy albies also
06:24had a home run in this one and we mentioned chris sale picked up another win five innings pitched
06:28eight strikeouts and here is walt weiss after they lost yesterday and win today that's what the
06:33braves are about said all year after a clunk you guys answer back i mean how impressive is it to
06:38continue to do that yeah it's good win tough place to win a series and uh you know chris really
06:46fought
06:47for five innings a lot of foul balls a lot of deep counts uh didn't look like he had his
06:52best slider
06:52today but he's still as good as anybody without his best stuff so um i thought he did a great
06:59job
06:59fighting for five innings um you know and ronnie got it's good to see ronnie get that big hit um
07:07we get him rolling i mean it's a game changer the battle of texas in the american league this round
07:13goes to the houston astros winning the four game series in arlington against the rangers five to one
07:19the final spencer arighetti won again he's been great this season for houston six innings pitched and
07:25three strikeouts also the blue jays beat the orioles in their season opener two or series
07:31opener two to one patrick corbin five innings pitched four strikeouts as the blue jays were on top
07:38yesterday now in the stanley cup playoff chase we're headed toward the finals but there could be
07:43one game left and that one may be tonight 8 15 eastern carolina takes on the montreal canadians
07:51and look at the line tonight the hurricanes minus 240 on the money line against the habs so they
07:58certainly will need a herculean effort to come through here total of five and a half the winner
08:03will play the vegas golden knights and the stanley cup finals begin next week always great to catch
08:10up with sam mcquillen from legal sports report here on this friday with the latest in sports betting and
08:15today even some casino stories as well great to have you here sam as we head toward the weekend
08:21let's start off with caesars a pretty monumental uh sale number here i'm seeing is this right 17.6
08:28billion dollars who is uh buying this and what is sort of the reasoning behind it
08:35yeah it's a huge number 17 billion dollars uh six billion dollars uh which um uh rockets owner and u
08:43.s
08:43ambassador to italy uh tilman fertita is uh going to pay out of his own pocket for this deal and
08:50then an
08:50that's going to pay out of his own pocket for this extra 12 billion dollars which is taking on
08:53the massive amount of debt that caesars has currently um it's obviously a huge deal caesars
08:58is a gigantic name not just in the sports betting space but in the hospitality space really in any space
09:05you talk about it's a gigantic global company uh with a lot of brands and a lot of you know
09:10weight behind
09:11it uh this would seemingly bring those and everything caesars owns uh into the same umbrella that tilman
09:19fertita owns with his golden nugget casinos as well as a number of other you know restaurants and
09:26hospitality groups um so that's really the interesting thing we're looking at here is you know combining
09:30these two sports betting brands together and gambling brands together what does that mean kind of the
09:36future of the industry you know caesars has online sports betting in about 25 states uh but it's talked
09:43about lately spinning off uh its online sports betting brand into kind of a separate entity from
09:49the company something that you saw mgm do with bet mgm which is technically not part of the company
09:55anymore although the company owns about half of it so interesting that caesars actually did not go
10:00through with that and sold the entire thing uh to fertita uh caesars has about you know number
10:06five number four spot nationally when it comes to all the other sports books behind a fan duel
10:11draft kings uh bet mgm sometimes bet 365 in some cases so um it might have to sell a bunch
10:18of its casinos as
10:19part of this deal it's not really clear yet exactly what happens uh there's instances where you know
10:25fertita would now own about three of the total casinos in atlantic city for example um so some regions
10:31have rules which you know mean you don't want someone to own too many of all the
10:36casinos in one places in one place so we'll see what more kind of details we get out of that
10:41department another interesting wrinkle as well is when um new jersey first passed online sports betting
10:47and fertita owned the golden nugget casino in the state there was a lot of concern about the owner of
10:53an nba team owning a sports book that takes bets on that team right so as part of that deal
10:59uh golden nugget
11:00has not taken bets on any games involving the houston rockets uh for years now uh golden nugget
11:06obviously isn't one of those big names in the online sports betting space but caesars is and if
11:10fertita now owns caesars the question is does that same rule apply to him but i think bigger question
11:15kind of here craig is does that even matter does anybody really even care about that because at this
11:19point you have presidents involved in their own sports books you have uh players on teams involved in
11:26their own sports books so the candidate has kind of just been open uh or the it's been a whole
11:31chaotic
11:32kind of you know crazy venture with all these people's involvement into different uh into different
11:37sports betting brands um so i wonder if people even care about that these days like they did back in
11:422019 2020 when new jersey was legalized yeah no i think a fair point by the way read this story
11:48over at
11:48legal sports report.com including our next story here which was a major boost here it would appear sam for
11:56prediction markets with the president essentially backing the idea that the cftc should have
12:03exclusive control over what or what does not happen uh certainly that would bode well for prediction
12:10markets over the next couple of years i suspect but you tell me does that is that what that means
12:14or is this just simply words we have to get to the bottom of it because as we know regardless
12:19of what
12:19anybody says it does appear to be more of a state by state issue uh for whether these prediction
12:25markets are allowed to operate or not yeah regardless of what anyone says craig um it's
12:32going to be an issue that is not solved immediately you have 20 something odd states suing prediction
12:38markets saying they're offering unlicensed sports betting you have the cftc which says no actually
12:43we're the ones who regulate this you guys have no power over this suing those states so a lot of
12:48people really think this is all going to be kind of decided like you mentioned on a state by
12:52state basis and then eventually probably by the supreme court who knows how long that will take
12:57who knows what the world will look like then who knows who will be in power but right now uh
13:02president
13:02donald trump is pushing more support uh in prediction markets uh way kind of while this all plays out so
13:09it is significant that the president is making more comments in favor of prediction markets he took the
13:14truth social uh publicly kind of you know uh saying that the cftc is the one that should regulate all
13:22these things and it's really critically important that it does and it thrives he also called out uh a
13:28number of politicians and elected officials uh who have you know been behind various attempts to
13:34restrict prediction markets he called out uh minnesota governor tim walls by name uh minnesota just
13:40signed he just signed a law in minnesota that restricts uh the use of prediction markets in
13:45the state largely not all prediction markets but most um which obviously the cftc is now suing to stop
13:52they called out new york attorney general letitia james who's actively suing several prediction market
13:57companies as well as uh former new jersey governor chris christie who has uh aligned himself with the
14:03american gaming association and been a very staunch critic of prediction markets which he sees as kind of you
14:09know taking away the business from casinos illegally and then last but not least uh governor of illinois jb
14:16pritzker who signed an executive order about a month ago to prevent state employees from using
14:21non-public information to profit from prediction markets so this is the furthest trump has gone
14:26publicly supporting prediction markets and kind of you know saying that this is supposed to be regulated
14:31by the cftc so certainly for companies like kalshi and polymarket they're happy to hear that you
14:36know trump obviously does have a huge investment in the venture himself uh truth social runs its own
14:43prediction market business via a partnership with coinbase it had planned to launch its own fully
14:48owned and operational prediction market but it has reportedly walked back those plans and then of
14:53course the president's son donald trump jr is a special advisor to both kalshi and polymarket and
14:58now about 87 percent of all activity on kalshi is sports which only started right after the president
15:05took office and the activity on the platform in general has gone up about a thousand percent
15:09since he took office again largely on the back of sports um you know the post i would say there's
15:15no coincidence it comes at a time when scrutiny is at an all-time high in the sector the new
15:20york
15:20times just published an investigation on how crypto and prediction market industries have gained
15:25influence within the trump administration uh so there's definitely a lot of spotlight over the sector
15:30right now but anytime you have the president more on your side on one of these controversial issues
15:35it's definitely something that companies like kalshi and polymarket are happy happened yeah without a
15:41doubt all right so uh sam we have a very big tick up in terms of people who bet on
15:46sports when the super
15:47bowl comes around same thing could be said for march madness and for the first time in several years we've
15:53got another event coming here and that of course is the world cup which i would anticipate will be the
15:59most bet world cup of all time but naturally this could lead to more people signing up for the first
16:04time as well tell us more yeah experts are projecting around four billion dollars in handle uh for the world
16:13cup which is going to happen this summer notably in north america for the first time in a very very
16:19long
16:19time which uh is about would be about three times the amount um that was bet on the 2022 world
16:26cup so
16:26it's a huge increase from then roughly a little more than how much has been on a super bowl every
16:32year um a lot of that really depends on how far the u.s men's national team goes uh kind
16:37of the worst
16:38the best case scenario is that they are eliminated in the round of 32 or 16 don't go too far
16:44that they
16:45cash everyone's long shot bets but go far enough that they keep drawing more handle on every game but
16:50like you alluded to craig this is really going to be all about customer acquisition uh especially when you
16:55have people watching and betting on the world cup now in american time zone that's obviously a big
17:00difference as well to be watching these games live should attract a lot more activity and then
17:05obviously these brands want to convert all these people long-term sports bettors long-term online
17:10casino players so it's not just about how much money they make on the world cup but obviously that'll
17:15be a big boon as well sam have a great weekend we'll catch up next week thanks for coming on
17:21thanks so much greg you too
