00:00Today, I want to go over this app called Upside and answer the question, does it really save you money
00:05on gas?
00:06And really go over three negatives with the app that you really should be aware of, as well as some
00:13of the pros as well.
00:14So, there's this app called Upside, and if you download it, what you do is you open it, and you
00:22get savings on gas, right?
00:25It helps you find in your area, like this map shows you, that's a picture of my phone, as well
00:31as savings on grocery shopping, as well as restaurants, coffee shops, and fast food, and stuff like that.
00:39And if you use this code here, you actually get a little bit more savings on gas, as well as
00:45some cash back on restaurants and grocery stores right here, okay?
00:52So, it can work, but it really depends on where you live.
00:56I mean, I live in a tiny town, so there's not many offers where I live, but I do get
01:01some, like this grocery outlet, you know, 15% back.
01:04If I spend $100, that's $15 right there.
01:07That's pretty cool.
01:08So, I do think it's worth it to download the app and see what's available in your area, because it
01:14can put money in your pocket.
01:16That's a positive thing, right?
01:18Especially nowadays, where it's been so crazy expensive.
01:22But there are some negatives, and I want to kind of go over that with the app as well.
01:25You do have, like, a 24-hour window to upload the receipts after making a purchase, or the offer will
01:31expire.
01:35And so, what's so cool about this app, I think, especially with groceries, I'll just want to talk about groceries,
01:42is that it can stack with another way to make money, which is uploading your grocery receipt.
01:49So, you get the 15%, like, for example, at the grocery outlet where I live.
01:54Plus, after I get the 15%, I can upload the receipt and get even more money.
01:59And one receipt can actually be uploaded to all these places here, and that all adds up.
02:05You know, every month, every year, it puts money in my pocket.
02:09And if you do this, it can put money in your pocket, too.
02:12And it barely takes any work.
02:13I mean, some of these places, it takes, like, two seconds.
02:17And you get gift cards, points.
02:19Some of them are a little bit more difficult, like Ibota, that one.
02:23And some of them, you have to find the items.
02:25But a lot of these are easy.
02:27So, I think it's just amazing.
02:28And all these here, you get actually more points if you use these, like, little links and codes and stuff.
02:35All right.
02:37And, yeah, and finally, upside, you get money for restaurants, fast foods, coffee chains, stuff like that.
02:43I don't really go to restaurants a lot because, you know, I'm pretty frugal.
02:48But it can definitely come in handy, especially if you're traveling, you know, you want to eat something, you know,
02:52you can find some deals.
02:54So, that's really, really cool.
02:56So, there's some upside.
02:57So, you might be thinking this.
02:58Well, that sounds good, but I'm skeptical.
03:00Why would an app give you money to go to the gas station, you know, when gas is crazy high?
03:07So, I'm making this video, right?
03:09Well, it's a marketing machine.
03:10This means businesses will pay upside to advertise their store.
03:14And, in return, the app gives you a part of the money they earn.
03:18So, this way, everybody wins.
03:20I don't know why I picked this video.
03:22I just thought it was funny.
03:23You get a taco.
03:24You get a taco.
03:25It's from the video where she goes, you get a car, you get a car, you get a car.
03:29I thought that was funny.
03:31I don't know why.
03:32Because I'm hungry for a taco.
03:35So, yeah.
03:36Also, the businesses get information on the consumer, such as how far someone will drive for a discount.
03:41And all this information is valuable to businesses.
03:44It really is.
03:45It can help them price their stuff better.
03:47It's all, like, market research crap.
03:50I made a whole detailed post on why apps give you money for receipts.
03:54And it all kind of makes sense.
03:56But to be, like, 100% honest, I don't give a shit what they do with my data.
04:01I don't care, you know, if I get the discount and I put money in my pocket, I'm happy.
04:06They get their information.
04:08They use it to price things accordingly.
04:10That's great for them.
04:11So, I'm all for it.
04:12Because here's the thing about these receipts, I'm not sure about the app, though, is, like, these big retailers will
04:19sell information to these, like, brands.
04:23So, what the brands do is they cut out the retailers, you know, like the big-name retailers, and they
04:30give the money to you.
04:32You probably need the money more than these big-ass stores.
04:36You know, I'm not going to name any names, but I'm sure, right?
04:38Yeah, there you go.
04:39So, we all win.
04:40All right.
04:41So, let's talk about the negatives.
04:44You might be thinking, what's the downside and upside, right?
04:47That's a good one.
04:49Well, here's one negative.
04:51You should really think about this, too, is one large negative is that a very expensive gas station could maybe
04:57offer you a 15% discount, but the gas is already super expensive, so it only comes down a little
05:03tiny bit.
05:04And you might just save money by not using the damn app.
05:07And that's definitely real.
05:09It is going on.
05:10So, what you guys, basically, you just got to be careful and just do the math.
05:15You know, whatever the discount is, you know, make sure it actually is going to save you money that you're
05:20just going to an expensive gas station just to save money, but it still costs you more than other places.
05:26I hope that makes sense.
05:28So, you just have to kind of do the numbers yourself.
05:30But depending on your area, you can save money.
05:34Okay?
05:34And I'll give you another insider secret, too.
05:36This is kind of what I do a lot.
05:38This depends on where you live, of course.
05:41Indian casinos and reservations, they save a lot of money on gas, because I think it's like a tax thing.
05:47They don't pay money in taxes, so they can offer, like, fuel at, like, super cheap prices.
05:52Of course, I live in California, so where you live is completely different than where I live, so, you know,
05:57our gas is, like, insane.
05:59I don't know what the hell's going on.
06:01All right.
06:02The second negative is the friction.
06:05This means you have to claim an offer before you get the discount.
06:08And most offers have, like, this window.
06:11So, it could be, like, 20, 30 minutes.
06:13It could be, you know, 5 hours, 10 hours to claim the offer before it expires.
06:18So, it's just easy to forget about claiming an offer before you go there and you get it, because we're
06:24all busy, right?
06:26So, that's kind of like a negative.
06:29There's friction into it.
06:30But I think it's kind of, you know, whatever.
06:31I think it could be worth it.
06:33It can be.
06:34Third, Upside works.
06:35You don't have to do this, but it does work best if you kind of link your credit card to
06:40it.
06:40And some people don't like this, and I don't blame them at all for that.
06:45Just to let you know, however, Upside does have, like, a security method, like, tokenization.
06:51So, they actually have, like, encryption and stuff like that.
06:56But if you're always nervous about doing that, you don't have to, and you can just scan your, like, receipts
07:00and stuff like that, too, to get the discount.
