00:00All right, today I'm going to show you exactly how to point your name servers from GoDaddy to DreamHost,
00:07as well as talk about what name servers do and why there's like two or three of them usually.
00:13Okay, so the first thing, and this is what I did, because I use DreamHost as well,
00:18is I logged into my DreamHost and then went over to, I won't enlarge this thing here,
00:24I went over to this left menu where it says support and then knowledge base,
00:29and I just typed in point GoDaddy domain to DreamHost name servers.
00:34I just typed it in and it came up with all these different results and the second one is the
00:39one that I wanted.
00:41Okay, so I clicked on that, that's the one you want.
00:44It says name servers on it and then brought this FAQ that kind of walks you through it a little
00:50bit
00:51but down here is the three name servers right here.
00:54They look just like this and that's what you want, okay.
00:58So when you find that, then what I did was I logged into GoDaddy, okay.
01:05And on the left, there's a little button, this is Portfolio, I'll enlarge this here, and right here.
01:11And then you have all these different domains, I have a few of them.
01:14Funny story, I used to own like actually way more domains and I lost a lot of money on domains.
01:19But anyways, that's another topic.
01:20So, with all the domains in GoDaddy, there's like these three little dots, right, and if you click on that
01:28dot, it'll bring up all these different options.
01:30And if you scroll to the very bottom, you'll see edit name servers, and that's what you want.
01:36You want to click that to edit the name servers.
01:38Okay, so that's what I did.
01:41And then it'll bring up a screen that looks exactly like this.
01:44It says edit the name servers.
01:47And you don't want to use the GoDaddy name servers.
01:51I'll use my own ones.
01:53And then what you do is those name servers that you found in DreamHost, those three, you just copy it
02:00and you paste it exactly into here.
02:02Boom, boom, boom, and save it.
02:04And it can take, you know, 24 hours or 48 hours to change name servers.
02:10It could take that long.
02:11And DreamHost is an amazing company that I currently use.

02:22A lot of budget hosting companies are famous for keeping, well, the whole checkout process is mine filled
02:30where they, you know, have a bunch of pre-checked boxes for add-ons and stuff like that you don't

02:34So anyways, one might be wondering, what do name servers actually do?
02:38Well, when someone types in your domain name, the computer's asking GoDaddy, like, okay, where are the files at, right?
02:45And then GoDaddy will respond going, I don't have the files, you know, but here's the name servers, go ask
02:51them.
02:51Then the computer goes to those name servers, which is like a direction sign, and points to the exact web
02:57hosting server
02:58where the website's files, images, and content is all stored.
03:03So it's like directions, really.
03:04So you might be wondering, well, why is there three of them?
03:06Have you ever thought about that?
03:08Well, it's for security.
03:10So if a massive power outage, right, cyber attack or tech glitch takes out one name server, then the second
03:18one will take over.
03:20So that way your website won't experience downtime, which is a real big bummer.
03:24It has happened to me a few times, and one time I didn't update my SSL certificate, and if you're
03:31not sure what that is,
03:32it's like a security badge.
03:34Like if you don't have an SSL certificate on your website, you'll notice that there'll be like a don't trust
03:40his website type of thing, right?
03:41You don't want that.
03:44But what's cool about DreamHost is, you know, the tech support walks me exactly how to do everything,
03:48so it's kind of like peace of mind in case you ever do that.
