00:00So, how would you feel if Deshaun Watson ended up being the quarterback?
00:06Who do you think is the current leader in the clubhouse right now for QB?
00:10I would have to say, if you're a veteran coach or you're a first-time head coach,
00:17I think I want it to be that way.
00:19I think the majority of the fans want it to be that way.
00:21I think that the ownership wants it to be that way,
00:24where if it's close, it would go to Shador.
00:26But the head coach is the head coach,
00:28and if they really are empowering the head coach the way they say they are,
00:31I cannot say I'd be surprised.
00:33And I guess I need to soften the blow for a lot of folks.
00:36It's probably going to end up being, I would imagine it's going to be Deshaun Watson.
00:40He's got more experience.
00:43He has certainly played, and it's been six years for crying out loud,
00:46but he has certainly played at a higher level in the NFL.
00:49Shador hasn't got a chance to show a lot, but Deshaun has the experience.
00:54And I don't think it's over if they were to just start Deshaun with the season
00:59and Shador was to be the backup.
01:01I don't think it's just over for Shador.
01:03I think you said it, or maybe a – because I know that you had high school basketball on TV
01:07a couple of times for the state championships.
01:10It might have been a fill-in, Owen.
01:11I don't know if you remember.
01:12It might have been – I don't want to put it on anybody else.
01:15I kind of want to see if Lyman might have said it.
01:18Did you say it might be over for Shador if Deshaun starts the season in Cleveland?
01:22Was it you, or was it somebody else here on the fan I was working with?
01:26And it's hard to believe right now as we're sitting here on April 22nd.
01:31But what I said was if Shador gets out there and struggles, like let's say he wins the job,
01:37but they start out like 1-5 because it's a new offense, new offensive line,
01:42no continuity, a lot of moving parts that we're used to typically, poor starts by the Browns.
01:51It's going to be hard for Shador because he was a fifth-round pick,
01:54and all these teams passed on him the first time around.
01:57So I can understand that.
01:58I'm thinking if he did not start the season, so it wasn't you,
02:02because somebody said they thought it was over for Shador.
02:05One of the people who were in for you said that they thought it was over for Shador
02:08if Deshaun started the season.
02:09I didn't agree with that because I said if you're Todd Munkin,
02:12you could look at it and go, hey, you might have started before you were ready.
02:16Kenny, I could make the argument it's better for him because...
02:19Well, I'm not going to argue it's better, but I can certainly argue you can make it look okay.
02:22Let's say it's Deshaun Watson that does the 1-5 to start out the year.
02:26And then Shador comes in.
02:28He's had all that time to sit there and watch and hopefully work on all those things
02:35and master the playbook and then comes in kind of midstream.
02:38Maybe that offensive line is starting to finally gel.
02:42Like, that's what I'm talking about.
02:44That could be a best-case scenario for Shador.
02:46I know it would suck for his fans that he's front and center
02:51and now he's been relegated to the background again
02:53and you're going to go after the Browns in every which way
02:56and go after Todd Munkin and now he's the enemy
02:58and everybody's the enemy because they didn't pick Shador.
03:00But I'm just saying for Shador specifically,
03:02that might actually be a much better setup.
03:04I don't think Todd Munkin has it in for Shador or anything like that.
03:07I would look at it and I don't know if it's going to be better for him
03:11or anything like that.
03:12It would be interesting to see how he responds to not being the starter
03:15if they were to go with Deshaun Watson.
03:17But I think you could easily explain and say,
03:19hey, you might not have been ready to do it last year.
03:22There's some things that are different with this offense.
03:23Now, I don't want you to get swallowed up here.
03:25We've got a veteran here who has experience in multiple offenses.
03:28We're going to go ahead.
03:29We're going to start the season with him.
03:31But I want you to be ready because if he can't do it,
03:33we've got to put our trust into you.
03:35No, that's the way I would do it if I were Todd Munkin,
03:38if I had to make that decision.
03:39Because I can't have Shador Sanders going south on me.
03:42We've got to get through the season.
03:43We've got to try to win a lot of football games, as many as we possibly can.
03:46It's going to be a tough task.
03:47It's going to be an uphill battle, guys.
03:48They can be better than what they were last year,
03:50but it's still going to be a difficult thing to be that much better
03:53than what they were last year.
03:54It starts on Thursday, obviously,
03:56but there's a lot of things that they've got to get to
03:58when it comes to this season.
03:59So I think that if you started Shador and it didn't go well,
04:04yeah, that would probably be more likely to be quote-unquote
04:06it for Shador in Cleveland.
04:08But if you were to start the season with Deshaun Watson
04:10and Deshaun Watson goes out and does a lot of what he's done in the past year,
04:14which is mess up and the team lose football games,
04:17then yeah, you could have your crack at Shador,
04:19but you want to make sure that he's working towards still that goal
04:21of being a starter here.
04:22And we could have ourselves almost the same discussions
04:25of what we're having next year.
04:26But I just look at it and I say, man, so much of this looks like it's set up.
04:29And especially with all these rumors that keep going on about 95
04:32and whether or not he wants to be here,
04:34like I get so upset about it at times,
04:36but I can't sit here and deny it every single day.
04:39The reworking with the contract, all that post-June 1st stuff,
04:42that this draft is not that great.
04:44I mean, good God, if they were to do something crazy
04:47and move on from him after June or after the 1st of June,
04:50like you'd have to look at it and go, guys, this is all dead in the water.
04:53This is all dead in the water.
04:54You know what this is about.
04:55And that would be a knock on Deshaun,
04:57and that would certainly be a knock on Shador.
04:59They would have to pick themselves up and dust themselves off.
05:01And if any of them could show something,
05:03they're really showing something because that type of loss
05:06would be such a huge hit to the team, to the fan.
05:11The fans could start to look forward to the next year.
05:14It would be such a hit to the culture and what you're trying to do.
05:17Such a hit to this year.
05:192-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
05:21But I don't want to get ahead of myself right now.
05:23So it was only day one yesterday.
05:25There were goods and bads out of all of them.
05:27It was a little bit surreal to see him back out there.
05:31Deshaun Watson, I got to admit.
05:33It was surreal.
05:34It was just – and I want to be as fair as possible.
05:37Like this is more of a me thing that I guess if you were talking to me logically,
05:43like, yeah, Deshaun at the end of last year was getting healthier, healthier, healthier.
05:49In fact, I think he could have played at the end of last year,
05:51according to people I talked to.
05:52But there were a lot of moving parts surrounding that.
05:55And obviously, why wouldn't you just let Chidora start, you know, the rest of the games?
05:59It makes sense.
06:01It was kind of crazy to see him out there because in my mind, I just thought we'd never see
06:05him again.
06:06You know, and again, you were like, well, why did you think that?
06:09But for the show, you're like, why did you think that?
06:10I'm just like, just a mental trick.
06:12I just thought we'd never see him again.
06:14I didn't think it was crazy for you to say it because I really thought when he – I mean,
06:16he's carted off the field.
06:18He's in tears.
06:19There was definitely a reaction with some of the fans.
06:22There was definitely a reaction with the team, with the fans.
06:24I mean, somebody just tweeted out at me that they wouldn't be surprised if he gets booed in training camp.
06:29I was like, oh, gosh, we've got to figure that out.
06:30I mean, so there, there's still hard feelings.
06:34And I'm going, man, I can't believe he's still here.
06:37Honestly, I've seen more people than I expected that said they'd be open to it.
06:42I do think the more time that has elapsed –
06:46Because ultimately people just want to win football games.
06:47Yeah, it's not that they think he's going to win football games, but like –
06:51They want the best chance at it.
06:52All right, whatever.
06:53Like, I think people are kind of coming into this season going, it's most likely neither of these guys are
06:59the guy.
07:00So in the end, like, all right, let's get a chance to see both of them.
07:04I mean, honestly, that's kind of what I've seen from people.
07:08Now, most people are still hoping that would be Shador way over Deshaun.
07:12But I definitely see less animosity today.
07:15It doesn't mean there aren't people that are very vocal about,
07:18I'm giving up my season tickets or I already gave up my season tickets.
07:21Certainly, I've seen that too.
07:23I'm just saying this is the most open I've seen a portion of the fan base.
07:26Wayne in Cleveland, you're first up in the fan.
07:29Hello, Wayne.
07:30Hey, good morning, gentlemen.
07:31How y'all doing?
07:32I'm doing well, Wayne.
07:33Go ahead.
07:34Yeah, I don't have a problem with Deshaun starting, if that's the case.
07:40You know, that's only, you know, if Coach Monkey wants to win.
07:47If he wants to win and Deshaun looks like he gave us the best opportunity to win,
07:55then I think he should start.
07:59It pains me to say it.
08:00It pains me to say it, Wayne, because I'm a conduit with the fans, right?
08:03I talk to the fans and then you talk to the team.
08:06But it pains me to mention this.
08:08And, Wayne, thank you very much for the call because that's the first one in
08:10and that's the first guy in about Deshaun Watson.
08:12But Wayne, I think, might be part of a maybe quiet minority there talking about
08:17Deshaun Watson because I think that a lot of folks just want the head coach
08:21to make the decision.
08:22It might not be a decision I like.
08:25It might not.
08:26But, damn it, if they go the natural way where the head coach,
08:30and this is where Wayne's getting at, the head coach makes the decision
08:33who starts on the football team, I can disagree later if he goes out there
08:38and he sucks.
08:39But if you've let your head coach, who is usually the guy in charge,
08:43unless you're an inept franchise, if you let the head coach make that decision
08:48on who starts for your football team, how can I rip that?
08:51How can I rip that?
08:52I guess I could say I think that by far that maybe Shador was better in camp
08:58or people are going to look at all that hocus pocus with the completions
09:04and the attempts and all that stuff that doesn't matter in camp,
09:08but they want to use it fine.
09:10But, honestly, I don't think Todd Munkin is going to be out there
09:13to make anybody mad.
09:14I think he's going to go out there and do what's best for his football team.
09:16I imagine if he were to pick Deshaun Watson, he's thought long and hard about this
09:19and he's going to think that Deshaun Watson helps his football team
09:22win football games and start this season over Shador Sanders.
09:25How can I knock the guy for that?
09:27You let your head coach, you did what a functional franchise is supposed to do.
09:31I can't knock you for that.
09:32I don't like it, but I can understand the rationale behind it.
09:37216-474-0092.
09:38Let me get to Corton in Wichita, Kansas real quick.
09:40Hello.
09:41Hey, fellas, appreciate you.
09:43Real quick, man, I'm a Deshaun, or not Deshaun, I'm a Shador guy,
09:46but if it's a fair competition and Shador wins, I'm okay with that.
09:49I understand that.
09:50I would challenge Cleveland, don't get rid of Shador too soon,
09:53and don't look at some rookie quarterbacks who've had bad seasons.
09:57Lima always says Shador had a terrible season.
09:59Don't look at Bernie Kosar's rookie season,
10:01and tell me if the Browns would have gave up on him, what would have happened?
10:03Don't look at Troy Aitman 0-11, or don't look at John Elway,
10:07and please don't say first round doesn't matter.
10:09First round is better than a fifth round.
10:11Well, I'm not getting rid of him just this year.
10:13I'll tell you this, Corey.
10:14If he doesn't win the job, I'm not getting rid of him this year.
10:17I'll keep him as a backup, absolutely.
10:20Because I guarantee you, somebody's going to take it.
10:22Did you hear Sean Payton after the draft?
10:24What did he say about Shador?
10:25That kid's going to play in this league.
10:26That kid's got something to him.
10:28You showed a little bit last year.
10:30If you give up on him now, it's going to be probably where you might look like
10:33Seattle and the Jets and all of them going,
10:35damn, we could have had him in.
10:36You know, don't do that.
10:38At least give him a fair chance.
10:39Now, Paul, how many rookie quarterbacks do you say this about?
10:44All I'm saying, anybody.
10:45You can look at any rookie.
10:47Who thinks a rookie is going to be great right away?
10:49It's rare.
10:50You know why you know the rookies that do?
10:51Because it's rare.
10:53You know, look.
10:56If Dallas gave up on Troy Aikman, who was 0-11,
10:58if Shador was 0-11, he wouldn't be on Cleveland this year
11:01if he was 0-11 last year.
11:02Had Dallas done that, look where they would have been.
11:05Corton, thank you very much for the call.
11:06I'm not getting rid of the guy if he doesn't win the job this year.
11:09That ain't going to happen.
11:10Logically, well, that'll be a debate for sure.
11:12Well, people will want to get rid of him.
11:13People will want him to be released to our Shador fans.
11:16But I'm not getting rid of him.
11:17Logically, yes, that would be nice if every quarterback in the NFL
11:21got five years of a runway.
11:24We just know that jobs are at stake.
11:26That's just not how the world works.
11:27Especially considering you, if they're bad this year,
11:31they will have an early pick next year.
11:33That early pick will come in with his team, right?
11:37His trainers, his PR and marketing behind them.
11:41They will have already made their NIL money.
11:43Yep.
11:44Will they want Shador?
11:45Not that Shador is a problem.
11:47Will they want everything else surrounding?
11:49Sure, we always said that with Tim Tebow.
11:50Like, do you really want Tim Tebow as your backup quarterback
11:53when his fan base is as loud and as populous as they are?
11:58And we find out over time, like, yeah, you can't have Tim Tebow as your backup.
12:01Over time, but I can do it now.
12:02And I just think that it's going to be up to Deshaun Watson to play well enough.
12:06Are they calling the coach every name in the book?
12:08Are they going after the coach and saying he's not giving that player an opportunity?
12:12I understand that wholeheartedly.
12:13Are they saying that coach is persuaded by skin color?
12:16So what?
12:16Does he hate Shador Sanders that much?
12:18He's going to go out there and put a guy that fans openly boo?
12:21We can't act like that wasn't part of the conversation this last time around.
12:23It was part of the conversation last year.
12:25Deshaun Watson wasn't a part of the conversation last year.
12:27No, I know that.
12:28Now he is.
12:28So I think it's totally different from all that stuff.
12:31So, I mean, you could bring it up.
12:32And, yeah, the Tim Tebow history, yeah, that's part of it.
12:35They say that about Connell and Kaepernick.
12:36But I don't need to get rid of the guy.
12:36They say that about every one of these famous quarterbacks.
12:40When they are not starting, how does that work in the locker room?
12:44How does that work with everything that humbers around the organization?
12:47That's not lost on me.
12:48And time and time again, what happens?
12:49The team gets rid of that quarterback.
12:51That's not lost on me.
12:52But I also look at it and say this is a different situation than those ones.
12:57So if they considerably go out – I just have never seen a situation
13:01where a quarterback who might be the leader in the clubhouse
13:05to be the quarterback of this football team
13:06seems to be so universally disliked by the fan base.
13:09I mean, you would say, how many Browns fans are not fans of Deshaun Watson?
13:13You're talking about Watson.
13:13I'm talking about the next year if they go into the draft and get a quarterback.
13:18You'll probably move on from everybody going into the next year.
13:20I thought you were agreeing with him.
13:22No, no, no, no, no, no.
13:23I'm not getting rid of him this year.
13:25Yeah.
13:25No, I'm sorry.
13:26We're not talking about this year.
13:27I must have misheard him, okay, because he's going into year two.
13:30If he doesn't start this year and he doesn't play this year –
13:32He probably won't want to be here.
13:33He'll probably go on in a different direction.
13:34He probably won't want to be here.
13:36He probably won't want to be here.
13:37Because he will have been passed up at the start by all these different quarterbacks.
13:42I mean, last year it was four-string to start out.
13:44Now, if another new coach and new coordinators and all that stuff,
13:50if they're like, no, you're not good enough here,
13:52and we're going to go draft another quarterback, he won't want to be here.
13:55Brother, that was about to get nasty there for a second.
13:56I'm glad we're on the same page.
