00:00Grace and love, like mighty rivers, poured in session from above,
00:11and has peace and perfect justice, keeps the guilty world in love.
00:24Why don't you open your Bibles, please, to 1 Peter chapter 3.
00:30We're going to be going through it as much as we can, as much as we are able to break it down,
00:37to be relevant to us and to the state that we are in, not only physically, personally, but the church as a whole.
00:48So, 1 Peter chapter 3.
00:51Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word,
00:56they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives.
01:00When they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear,
01:04do not let your adornment be merely outward, arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel.
01:11Rather, let it be the hidden person of the heart with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
01:17which is very precious in the sight of God.
01:19For in this manner, in former times, the holy woman who trusted in God also adorned themselves,
01:24being submissive to their own husbands.
01:27As Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters you are, if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.
01:33Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honour to the wife as to the weaker vessel,
01:40and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
01:44Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another, love as brothers, be tender-hearted, be courteous,
01:53not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, blessing,
01:59knowing that you were called to this, that you may indeed inherit a blessing.
02:06For he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
02:15Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it.
02:19For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers.
02:24But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
02:28And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?
02:33But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed.
02:37And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
02:40But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason
02:47for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear, having a good conscience,
02:53that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ,
02:58may be ashamed.
02:59For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
03:05For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God,
03:11being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit,
03:14by whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison,
03:17who formerly were disobedient when once the divine long-suffering waited in the days of Noah
03:22while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
03:29There is also an antitype, which now saves us, baptism,
03:34that not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God
03:40through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God,
03:46angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to him.
03:51And so, we start this chapter off with marriage.
03:58Marriage was instigated in Genesis.
04:01A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
04:04and the two shall become one flesh.
04:08Marriage is a difficult institution,
04:11because two strangers suddenly decide, well, they don't suddenly decide,
04:14but the decision is made, I want to marry you, I want to be joined with you,
04:19I want to have a family with you, I want to live with you.
04:23And the two then get together, and in days gone by,
04:29and it's becoming more and more rare nowadays, children are born,
04:33which is what God is wanting, to procreate, to fill the earth with children,
04:38maybe with other spirits of just men who will be made perfect as they now grow up.
04:48But marriage is a very difficult institution,
04:51because you have to learn to understand and to live with the person
04:56that you have committed your life to.
04:59Commitment nowadays is not worth very much,
05:05because the commitment made by the people depends upon not only their standing,
05:12but their ability to comprehend what life is,
05:16and our responsibility to one another.
05:20People are selfish, they want to do things their own way, in their own time,
05:25never mind what their partners would want to do.
05:28And, as a result, divorce has become a great serious problem.
05:36God hates divorce.
05:37He says so in Malachi, because it fools one's garments with violence.
05:43And he speaks about it quite clearly and honestly,
05:46that he's very, very disgusted with people that do get divorced.
05:50We're told in other places that the only legal precedent which would sanction divorce is adultery in the home.
06:00But other than that, no ways.
06:03We have been committed to our spouses,
06:07whichever way, male or female, male or female.
06:10But that commitment is for life,
06:14forever and ever until we die.
06:16That is what marriage is.
06:18That is what, I didn't fall in love with you,
06:21and now I'm falling out of love with you,
06:23because my situation has changed a little bit,
06:26and the feeling that I had in the beginning is not the same as it used to be now.
06:31And you don't quite meet the expectations that I have of you,
06:35so I'm going to look for somebody else who might be more suitable for me.
06:40It doesn't work like that.
06:42We make a commitment to our spouses for life,
06:45whether it is good or bad.
06:48We have spoken the word,
06:50and we need to ratify that with our lives for our spouses.
06:55It doesn't matter how bad it is or how good it is.
06:58We are committed till death do us part.
07:02It is something that is,
07:03it's almost an unspoken law now that till death do us part,
07:07but it is still relevant.
07:09And it is relevant for many,
07:12many reasons,
07:13far more so for us who are in the church,
07:15because if I'm committed to my wife,
07:18I have a testimony to uphold,
07:20not only before her,
07:22but to the whole of society.
07:24It's not Ken.
07:25It's not Leanna.
07:26It's Ken and Leanna.
07:27Always.
07:28It's Ken and Leanna.
07:29It's Ken and Leanna.
07:30If it becomes Ken only,
07:33where is Leanna?
07:34Why is she left out of the equation?
07:37What is happening?
07:38Is the marriage okay?
07:39Is it working well?
07:40What is happening?
07:41And questions start getting raised.
07:43How's it going there?
07:45What is happening?
07:46Is it all right?
07:46And it's natural to be curious about people.
07:50And the more curious we get,
07:51the more answers we need to be able to make good judgments and understanding,
07:57to support and encourage and exhort if necessary,
08:01the couples who might be in trouble or might be heading for trouble,
08:05or maybe their relationship is strained.
08:07But that straining is good.
08:10And if you are able to recognize and realize,
08:15particularly from the church point of view,
08:18that we are not our own,
08:20we have been bought at a price.
08:23I do not belong to myself anymore.
08:26I belong to the Lord Jesus Christ,
08:28who saved me and died for me
08:31and is resurrected and intercedes for me.
08:35And so the end of my walk upon this earth
08:39is going to be to give an answer to God Almighty
08:44for the things done here.
08:47If I'm going to get rid of my wife,
08:50then that casts doubt on my readiness
08:54to agree to the testimony that I have
08:59with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
09:01If I cannot keep my word with my wife
09:04and if she cannot keep her word with me,
09:06how can I keep my word to God?
09:08And so it is vital in every single circumstance and situation,
09:12we need to recognize that we are being tried
09:17and that we are being tested for the life which is yet to come.
09:22There's a common misconception that when we get to heaven,
09:25we're going to be sitting down on our backsides
09:27and just resting and doing nothing.
09:29I disagree with that.
09:30When we get to heaven, we'll be there for a little bit.
09:33We're going to be having, Lord willing,
09:35the marriage supper of the Lamb.
09:37We'll be coming back with the Lord
09:39and we will be ruling and reigning with Him.
09:41We will have authority by Him.
09:44Already we are spoken of in the book of Peter.
09:47In Peter chapter 2, he says,
09:50You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood,
09:53a holy nation, His own special people.
09:56Do we realize who we are in the Lord?
10:00That we are not just a little congregation here in Chartreuse.
10:03Sometimes there are only three or four.
10:05Sometimes there are eight or nine.
10:07Not many people, nothing to be counted,
10:09nothing to be said.
10:10Wow, look at that church there.
10:12Even the population of Chartreuse
10:16barely knows that this church exists.
10:19One day when I was doing plumbing in Lee Common,
10:22when I was speaking to the lady,
10:24she says, I go to church.
10:26And I said, well, I do too.
10:27Where do you go?
10:28I said, I go to Chartreuse.
10:29We're in Chartreuse.
10:30I said, there's a little church along the road.
10:32You mean that little dump?
10:34That?
10:35Is that a church?
10:36And that is what the people think or thought.
10:39This was many years ago now of Chartreuse at the time.
10:42But this is what God has given us.
10:45And He's looking to see
10:46if we are going to be faithful in the small things.
10:50As husbands and wives need submission to one another,
10:54the husband has to love his wife
10:56as Christ loved the church.
10:59He loved the church so much
11:00that He gave Himself for the church.
11:03The church is not just a place
11:05where we meet together
11:07to sing lovely choruses, lovely hymns,
11:09where we look at the Word of God
11:11and speak about the Word of God
11:12and say, oh, that's a good message.
11:14I wonder what can be interesting.
11:15What can be found out of that?
11:16But this is the manual for life for us.
11:20This is telling us
11:21how we need to conduct ourselves
11:23for eternity, forever and ever.
11:26Do you believe that?
11:28Because that is where we need to be in our belief.
11:32That this is just a testing ground.
11:35James speaks about our lives here.
11:37He says we are like a vapor.
11:39We are here today and we are gone tomorrow.
11:41And when I look back on my life
11:4370-odd years ago,
11:46it's just memories.
11:48Some good, some bad.
11:49But it's memories.
11:50There's nothing tangible.
11:52There's nothing you can say,
11:53wow, look at this.
11:53I've built this empire.
11:55No, there's nothing.
11:57There's nothing.
11:58And when we go,
11:59what do we do when we go?
12:02We go naked,
12:04like when we came.
12:06So whatever we built,
12:07whether it's an empire
12:08or whether it's nothing,
12:09we're leaving everything behind
12:11and we're going with nothing.
12:13All that we're going with
12:14is our spirit.
12:16And all that is going there
12:17is my personality,
12:20my character,
12:21which is being developed today
12:23with you all here as well.
12:25All our characters are being developed
12:26with every test and trial
12:29and circumstance and situation.
12:31How are we going to stand
12:33with that particular test
12:35which has been brought upon us?
12:37Even me tonight here,
12:39this is a test and a trial for me.
12:41What do I say about this section
12:42that I have been asked to speak upon?
12:45And so the Lord is giving me words
12:47to be able to compare the church
12:49that Christ died for.
12:52He's building his church.
12:54His church is you and I.
12:57We are living stones.
12:59We're being built up into this building
13:01for a dwelling place of God
13:03and the Spirit.
13:04How wonderful is that?
13:07It's something very emotional to me
13:10and something so, so profound
13:12that God is using us
13:14to build his church.
13:16He's not using the famous apostles
13:19and the prophets and the teachers.
13:21Yes, he did use that in the past
13:23and all those things we are told
13:25in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 10.
13:28And he said,
13:29these things all happen to them
13:30as examples.
13:32If something is given to me
13:34as an example,
13:35I need to understand
13:36the reason and the purpose.
13:38What is it going to mean to me?
13:39What am I going to come up against?
13:42And how am I going to manage this?
13:44They didn't manage it.
13:47And so Christ said,
13:48I'm going to build my church
13:50and the gates of Hades
13:51shall not prevail against it.
13:52And he's using you and I
13:54now to build that
13:55with the characters
13:56and the abilities
13:58that he has given us.
14:00Flesh and blood
14:00cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.
14:02Christ died on the cross.
14:04He was crucified
14:04and he was raised.
14:07A resurrected body,
14:09in a resurrected body,
14:10we are going to have to
14:12be released from our bodies
14:14that our spirits may return
14:16to God who gave it.
14:17So wives need to be
14:20submissive to their husbands.
14:23Submissive in today's language
14:27is a very seriously
14:30demeaning word in a sense.
14:32And if you say to a woman
14:34off the street,
14:34you need to submit to your husband,
14:36she'll probably throw a handbag
14:38at you or something in anger
14:39because how dare you say
14:41that I need to be submissive to him.
14:44We are the same
14:44and he listens to me
14:46and we have our work to do
14:48and how dare you do that.
14:50But that is what the world sees
14:51and the world understands.
14:53But in the hierarchy of God,
14:55Adam was formed first
14:57and he gave Eve to Adam
14:59for a help me.
15:01It tells us here that
15:02the wife is the weaker vessel.
15:05Sometimes not physically weaker,
15:08sometimes not spiritually weaker,
15:10but the wife is a weaker spirit,
15:18if I can put it that way.
15:19I can't describe it
15:21in any broader terms than that.
15:23But I see it with my wife.
15:25She will see something
15:26and I'll say,
15:26no, no, no,
15:27that's not right.
15:28Go and do this and do this.
15:29Oh, yes, I see it now.
15:31Because she sees the beauty of things,
15:33the comfort of the things,
15:34the softness of the things.
15:35She sees the things
15:36from a woman's perspective of love,
15:39of acceptance of everything.
15:42Whereas I see it as,
15:44well, there's a problem,
15:44I've got to sort that out.
15:46And you get into trouble
15:48with an attitude like that
15:49because every time,
15:51love, I need help with this.
15:52What's the problem?
15:53You know, how can I sort it?
15:54There's not a problem.
15:55Just do something.
15:57And we are different,
15:59but the differences complement each other
16:01to make an unbreakable bond.
16:06If you splice a rope together
16:09with the same type of rope,
16:12it won't break.
16:13But if you take a stronger and a weaker,
16:16it'll break eventually.
16:18The wife and the husband
16:20have been perfectly joined together
16:22in their spirits to worship God
16:25and also to make the way
16:27through life that we have.
16:29Life is not easy.
16:31We've sung that hymn
16:32and it's covered many, many, many things.
16:34The church is sore pressed.
16:36Marriages are sore pressed.
16:39Life is getting more difficult
16:40with the cost and with the expenses
16:42and even with the pressure
16:46by the communities on life itself.
16:50We are almost secluded
16:53from the communities
16:54because we keep company
16:56with like-minded people.
16:59If we can.
17:00I spend my week
17:02not being able to be
17:04in the company
17:05of like-minded people
17:07and it's not a pleasant place to be
17:10because that is entirely opposite
17:12to the holiness
17:13and the righteousness
17:14which I'm used to
17:15in the company
17:16of born-again believers.
17:18The world is rotten
17:19and the world is falling apart
17:21physically
17:22and also spiritually.
17:24The God of this world
17:25is breaking it all together,
17:27but he cannot touch us
17:28in the church
17:29depending, of course,
17:30upon our commitment
17:31to the wife
17:33or to the husband.
17:35Christ is our bridegroom.
17:38He gave himself for us
17:39that the church
17:42might survive,
17:43that he might wash her
17:45and cleanse her
17:45with the washing of water
17:47by the word,
17:48that he should present
17:49that church to himself
17:50spotless
17:51and without blemish.
17:53God has got a goal
17:55for the church,
17:56whether it is Charteridge,
17:57whether it is Quainton,
17:58whether it is the broader church,
17:59but it's the true church
18:00nonetheless,
18:01not the Church of England,
18:03not the Roman Catholic Church.
18:05It's the church
18:05that was bought
18:06by the blood of Jesus
18:07and we are those people now
18:09that have to
18:10not only look to the church
18:11and say,
18:12well, you know,
18:12I've been faithful
18:13in coming to Charteridge
18:14every Sunday
18:15for the last four or five years
18:17or however long it is
18:18and I've been faithful
18:19in attending the meetings
18:20and I've been faithful
18:21in contributing
18:22and I've been faithful
18:23in supporting
18:24but what about
18:25the faithfulness
18:26to your own marriage,
18:28to the church in general,
18:31to your own family,
18:33husbands,
18:34love your wives
18:35as Christ loved the church.
18:37Are we able to do that
18:39when all else fails,
18:42when your wife
18:43has made you so angry,
18:45all you want to do
18:45is just walk out of the door.
18:48We have to be strong
18:50and if we can be strong
18:52at home
18:52in situations like that,
18:54we can be strong
18:54in the church as well
18:56and supporting
18:57and encouraging
18:58one another all the time
18:59and the church won't break.
19:02Christ is the head
19:02of the church.
19:03We are members
19:04of his body.
19:06If one member suffers,
19:07all the members
19:07suffer together
19:08but he is the head
19:10of the church.
19:11He's bought the church
19:12with his own blood
19:14and he's building us up
19:15in that most holy faith.
19:17And so he goes on here
19:20in Peter chapter 3
19:22speaking to the wives,
19:24speaking about
19:25the hidden person
19:26with the incorruptible beauty
19:28of a gentle
19:29and a quiet spirit
19:30which is very precious
19:32in the sight of God.
19:34That is the person
19:36that God sees,
19:37recognizes,
19:38understands
19:38and will compensate.
19:41It is that hidden person,
19:43the spirit person.
19:45Husbands,
19:45dwell with them
19:46likewise with understanding,
19:47giving honor to the wife
19:49as to the weaker vessel
19:50and being heirs together
19:52of the grace of life
19:54that your prayers
19:54may not be hindered.
19:57A twofold cord
19:58is not easily broken
19:59or a threefold cord
20:00is not easily broken,
20:01the husband,
20:02the wife
20:02and God
20:03with them.
20:05But we need to have
20:06a common understanding
20:07and a common mind.
20:08One mind,
20:09we are told in verse 8,
20:10having compassion
20:11for one another,
20:12being tender hearted,
20:14being courteous
20:15and not returning evil
20:17for evil.
20:17It's so easy
20:18to be critical.
20:20It's so easy
20:21to point fingers.
20:22I told you, sir,
20:24but why didn't you see that?
20:25Why didn't you do that?
20:26No, that doesn't look good enough.
20:28You should do...
20:29All those things are,
20:31could I say,
20:32fiery darts
20:33of the wicked one.
20:34We are not immune
20:36from the wiles
20:37of the devil.
20:39He has us
20:41in his target
20:41all the time.
20:42Yes, greater is
20:43he who is in us
20:44than he who is
20:45in the world
20:46because it is my soul
20:47which is going
20:48to answer to God.
20:49It is my soul
20:50that the devil
20:51is wanting to get
20:52but he can't get it
20:53as long as I am
20:54in Christ.
20:55And as long as I
20:56recognize that
20:57I am
20:57a born-again believer,
21:00my home is in heaven,
21:01my father is
21:02God the Father,
21:04my brother is
21:05the Lord Jesus Christ.
21:06And as long as I believe
21:07the word
21:08that has been given
21:09to me,
21:09I am okay.
21:10But the fiery darts
21:12still come
21:12and how do we
21:14handle them?
21:15Have we got the shield
21:16of righteousness,
21:18the breastplate of righteousness
21:19and the shield of faith
21:21with which to quench
21:22all the fiery darts
21:23of the wicked one?
21:24It can come from
21:24inside the church.
21:25It can come from
21:26outside the church.
21:27If somebody is not
21:28walking in the spirit,
21:29if somebody is not
21:30walking with the Lord,
21:31even a believer,
21:33he could be persuaded
21:35to come out
21:36with a reviling accusation
21:38or some nasty snide comment
21:40or something
21:42which can break down
21:43brothers and sisters
21:44in Christ.
21:45We need to be so careful
21:47about who we are,
21:48about that wonderful
21:49position that we are in
21:51to be able to have
21:52the ability
21:54to support
21:55and encourage,
21:56but also recognizing
21:58that as we have that,
21:59we can also break down
22:01those with whom
22:02we have to do,
22:03those whom we love.
22:05not returning evil
22:07for evil
22:08or reviling for revival,
22:09but on the contrary,
22:10blessing,
22:11knowing that you
22:12were called to this
22:13that you may
22:14inherit a blessing.
22:16No more can we just
22:17look to ourselves
22:18and say,
22:18well, it is only me
22:19and my wife.
22:21It is not only me
22:22and my wife.
22:22It is me and my wife
22:24and the Lord
22:24and we need to
22:25make sure
22:26that we are
22:27consecrated in Him.
22:28And if we are
22:29unequally yoked,
22:31even more so,
22:32the challenge becomes
22:33even more difficult
22:34because there now
22:35you have light
22:36cohabiting with darkness
22:37and it is even
22:39more difficult
22:39because the goals
22:41are the same
22:41and the ability
22:45to adapt
22:46is the same
22:47and the understanding
22:48is different.
22:49All these things,
22:50they all create
22:52hassles
22:54and stumbling blocks
22:57for good,
22:58healthy marriages.
22:59and so
23:01we need to look
23:03to ourselves
23:04to our home lives
23:05and make sure
23:06that everything
23:07that we do there
23:09is difficult
23:10as it is sometimes
23:11but also too
23:13the Lord
23:14will ratify us
23:16and He will bring us
23:17through any situations
23:18which might arise there.
23:21This happens
23:21with cooperation
23:22from the wives
23:23being submissive
23:24to their husbands
23:24but also husbands
23:26loving their wives.
23:29The one
23:29complements the other
23:31and the two
23:32work together
23:33in one.
23:37Now,
23:38if we go on
23:39to verse 13,
23:40Who is he
23:41who will harm you
23:42if become followers
23:43of what is good?
23:45But even if you
23:46should suffer
23:46for righteousness' sake
23:47you are blessed
23:48and do not be afraid
23:50of the threats
23:51nor be troubled
23:52but sanctify the Lord
23:54God in your hearts
23:55and always be ready
23:56to give a defense
23:57to everyone
23:58who asks you
23:59a reason
23:59for the hope
24:00that is in you
24:01with meekness
24:02and fear
24:02having a good conscience
24:04that when they defame
24:05you as evildoers
24:06those who revile
24:08your good conduct
24:09in Christ
24:09may be ashamed
24:11for it is better
24:12if it is the will
24:13of God
24:13to suffer
24:13for doing good
24:14than for doing evil.
24:17Sanctify the Lord
24:18God in your hearts.
24:20He is sanctified
24:21in our hearts.
24:22We know that.
24:23But always be ready
24:25to give a defense.
24:26Can you do that?
24:27Are you able
24:27to give
24:28a logic defense
24:30for the reason
24:31that we have
24:32of the hope
24:34that is in us?
24:35To do it
24:36without alienating
24:38the questioner.
24:40To do it
24:40in a manner
24:41which would
24:42exude love
24:43and compassion
24:44and kindness
24:44and tenderness
24:45to the person
24:47who is asking
24:48the question.
24:49Sanctifying
24:50the Lord God
24:50in your hearts.
24:52Separating
24:52the Lord God
24:53from your
24:53everyday life
24:54in a sense.
24:55Making sure
24:56that he is
24:56on the throne
24:57as he ought to be
24:58and he is not
24:59just your happy mate
25:00just walking
25:01along with you.
25:02We need to
25:03worship God
25:03in the right manner
25:04and the appropriate
25:06ways.
25:07Sanctifying him
25:08and being ready
25:09to give that defense.
25:10The defense
25:11is why we have
25:12been given the armor.
25:14The whole armor
25:14of God
25:15to stand against
25:16the wiles of the devil.
25:17Remember that armor
25:18is not an attacking armor.
25:20Even the sword
25:21is for defense.
25:23But everything
25:24that we have been given
25:25in the book
25:26of Ephesians
25:27chapter 6
25:28is to defend
25:29ourselves
25:30and to defend
25:31the faith
25:31against the attacks
25:33of the wicked one.
25:34Wicked one
25:35goes around
25:35like a roaring lion
25:37seeking whom
25:37he may devour
25:38and he has us
25:40as his target.
25:41Right back
25:42in the book
25:43of Genesis
25:43chapter 3
25:44after Cain
25:47and Abel
25:48had offered up
25:48their sacrifice
25:49Cain was downcast
25:51and God came
25:52and said to him
25:53what's your problem?
25:54And then he said
25:56to him
25:57sin is lying
25:58crouching at your door
26:00waiting to devour you
26:01but you need
26:02to overcome it.
26:03We need to recognize
26:04who we are
26:05in Christ
26:06that sin
26:07is a mortal enemy
26:08the devil
26:09the wicked one
26:10is a mortal enemy
26:11but we have to
26:12be able to
26:13to make that stand
26:15and to give that defense
26:16with a reason
26:18not just because
26:19I think I should go to church
26:21and I've been to church
26:22and I'm okay
26:23but why
26:24why do I have a reason?
26:26What is the hope I have?
26:28Can I ratify it
26:29with facts?
26:30The facts come out
26:31of the word of God
26:32and it is only by knowledge
26:34of the word of God
26:35that we are able
26:36to present
26:37a satisfactory argument
26:40to those
26:40who ask a reason
26:41for the hope
26:42that is in you
26:43with meekness
26:44and in fear.
26:45What is your hope
26:46tonight?
26:48Has it extended
26:49beyond
26:50the end of the month
26:52or the end of the year?
26:53Has it extended
26:54as far as dying?
26:56Has it extended
26:57as beyond
26:58the deathbed
26:59to when we stand
27:01before the Lord
27:02for the spirit
27:03will return
27:04to God
27:04who gave it?
27:05We are not
27:06physical people
27:08we're physical
27:09in our bodies
27:10the bodies die
27:10but you cannot kill
27:11an immaterial thing
27:12which is the spirit
27:13the spirit
27:14will return
27:15to God
27:15who gave it
27:16God is spirit
27:17and it is there
27:17that we'll answer
27:18for the things
27:19that we've done
27:19in the body
27:20so we need
27:22to be able
27:22to be ready
27:23all the time
27:24to give
27:25a satisfactory
27:26honest diagnosis
27:28and reason
27:29for the hope
27:30that we have
27:30remembering
27:31it is only
27:32by grace
27:33that we've been saved
27:34we cannot stand
27:35on our own
27:35recognizance
27:36it is only
27:37on the word
27:38of God
27:38that we have
27:39God is working
27:40in us
27:40and he's called
27:41us to be
27:41those believers
27:43that have the ability
27:44to comprehend
27:45and to walk
27:46in the light
27:47and to know
27:47and understand
27:48the word
27:48that he's given us
27:49so we need
27:51to be able
27:51to do that
27:52having a good
27:52conscience
27:53that when they
27:54defame you
27:55as evildoers
27:56those who revile
27:57your good conduct
27:58in Christ
27:59may be ashamed
28:00once more
28:01your conduct
28:01is being brought
28:02up to the
28:03to the mark here
28:04how are we
28:05conducting ourselves
28:06conducting ourselves
28:07in our marriage
28:08conducting ourselves
28:09in the society
28:10in which we live
28:11conducting ourselves
28:13in the community
28:13in which we
28:14in which we
28:16move around
28:16and we have
28:17some means
28:21of influence
28:23so we need
28:25to identify
28:26who we are
28:28in the Lord
28:29and be able
28:30to give that
28:31defense to everyone
28:32who asks a reason
28:33that we have
28:33the last section
28:36that we have here
28:37it speaks about
28:38Christ's suffering
28:39every almost
28:40every chapter
28:41in Peter's book
28:42he speaks about
28:43the sufferings
28:43of Christ
28:44Christ suffered
28:45once for sins
28:47the just
28:48for the unjust
28:49that he might
28:50bring us to God
28:51being put to death
28:52in the flesh
28:53but made alive
28:54by the spirit
28:56by whom also
28:57he went and preached
28:58to the spirits
28:59in prison
28:59so here Christ is
29:02he rose from the dead
29:03and he's gone now
29:05and preached
29:06to the spirits
29:07in prison
29:07and he went
29:08by direction
29:09of the Holy Spirit
29:10that Holy Spirit
29:11is also the same
29:12spirit
29:13when Jesus
29:14began his ministry
29:15that led him
29:15into the wilderness
29:16to be tempted
29:17by the devil
29:18now Jesus'
29:20ministry on the earth
29:21is finished
29:21and the spirit
29:22is leading him
29:23down now
29:23to go and speak
29:24to those
29:25who are in prison
29:26those spirits
29:27the bodies
29:29of whom
29:29died on the earth
29:31the bodies
29:31of whom
29:32were drowned
29:33in the flood
29:33of Noah's flood
29:34those spirits
29:36have been put
29:37in prison
29:38and they are
29:39the ones
29:40to whom Christ
29:41went and preached
29:42and said
29:43here I am
29:44this is why
29:45Noah built
29:46the ark
29:46if you'd listened
29:47to Noah
29:48you wouldn't
29:49be here
29:49but he built
29:50the ark
29:51that ark
29:52took 120 odd
29:53years to build
29:54in a country
29:55where there
29:56was no rain
29:57and so it was
29:58almost
29:59it was
29:59something unheard
30:01of and impossible
30:02and a stupid
30:02thing to do
30:03to build a ship
30:04where there is
30:05no rain
30:05but isn't that
30:07exactly the same
30:08as the
30:08mindset
30:10of the people
30:10why do you
30:12need Christ
30:12we're okay
30:13we have wonderful
30:14homes
30:15look at my car
30:16look at my family
30:16look at my education
30:17look at my position
30:19look at my salary
30:19what do I need
30:21Christ for
30:21but the rains
30:23are going to come
30:23the rains are going
30:25to come
30:25and the time
30:26is going to come
30:27when all that
30:28is counted for naught
30:29and Christ will be
30:30preaching to those
30:31people
30:32to the spirits
30:32in prison
30:33you might remember
30:34the story
30:35in Luke chapter 16
30:36about the rich man
30:37and Lazarus
30:38they both died
30:39the rich man
30:41opened his eyes
30:43and he was in hell
30:44in Hades
30:45in torments
30:46Lazarus
30:47was taken
30:48to Abraham's bosom
30:50by the angels
30:51immediately
30:52a contrast
30:54in the
30:55the mode
30:56of transport
30:57into the
30:58into the next
30:59kingdom
30:59the rich man
31:01opened his eyes
31:02the rich man
31:04spoke
31:05he could hear
31:06everything
31:08his faculties
31:09were a hundred percent
31:11though his body
31:12was still on earth
31:13in the grave
31:14and he cried out
31:15to Abraham
31:16and he said
31:16I'm battling here
31:17please send
31:18somebody to
31:19tell my brothers
31:20don't come here
31:22make a plan
31:22get saved
31:23do whatever
31:23you're going to do
31:24and he said
31:24I can't do that
31:25and even if somebody
31:26rose from the dead
31:27even if somebody
31:29rose from the dead
31:30it would make
31:31no difference
31:31to them
31:32likewise
31:33with us
31:34we look
31:35and we will say
31:36if we could see
31:37miracles happening
31:38if we could see
31:39if we could see
31:40a lame man
31:41walking
31:41I would really
31:43really really believe
31:44but we tend to
31:44forget those things
31:45just the same
31:47as the Israelites
31:48forgot
31:48about the Red Sea
31:50being opened
31:51forgot about
31:52all the plagues
31:53in Egypt
31:54forgot about
31:55all the wonders
31:56that they saw
31:57and turned away
31:58from God
31:59the miracles
32:00they come
32:01and they go
32:02but if you have
32:03a faith
32:04in your heart
32:05that faith
32:06based on the
32:06Lord Jesus Christ
32:07you're founded
32:09you're founded
32:11and nothing
32:11will move us
32:12away
32:12from that hope
32:14and so Jesus
32:15by that same
32:16spirit
32:16went
32:17we're told
32:18who formerly
32:19were disobedient
32:20when once
32:21the divine
32:21long-suffering
32:22waited
32:23in the days
32:23of Noah
32:24while the ark
32:25was being prepared
32:26in which a few
32:27that is eight souls
32:28were saved
32:29through water
32:29and he's gone
32:31into heaven
32:32and is at the
32:32right hand of God
32:33angels and authorities
32:35powers being made
32:36subject to him
32:37do you know
32:39that God
32:39had the Lord Jesus Christ
32:41create the heavens
32:42and the earth
32:43and he's given him
32:44all authority
32:45in heaven and earth
32:46and over principalities
32:48and powers
32:49that is our Lord Jesus Christ
32:51we worship God
32:52through and by
32:54the Lord Jesus Christ
32:55and so
32:56we need to
32:58establish
32:58our faith
33:00we need to
33:01establish
33:02our modus operandi
33:03we need to
33:05have our goal
33:06steadfastly
33:08and clearly
33:09set before us
33:10that whatever
33:11happens
33:12my marriage
33:13will survive
33:13because I'm married
33:14in Christ
33:15to my wife
33:17because that
33:19is going to be
33:20an example
33:21of my relationship
33:23to the church
33:25of the Lord Jesus Christ
33:27and to Christ himself
33:28if I'm committed
33:29to my wife
33:30come hell or high water
33:31and whatever might happen
33:33forgive the expression
33:34I'm going to be committed
33:35to the church
33:36of the Lord Jesus Christ
33:37doesn't matter what happened
33:39and I will be
33:41exalted
33:42at the end
33:43and God will be able
33:44to say to me
33:45well done
33:46good
33:47and faithful servant
33:48but we've been put
33:49on this earth
33:50for a reason
33:51and for a purpose
33:52the Bible tells us
33:53three score years
33:54and ten
33:55and if by reason
33:55of strength
33:56it is longer than that
33:57yet that time
33:58is only
33:59suffering
34:00and trials
34:01we've been put here
34:03to be tested
34:04and to be tried
34:05to see what manner
34:06of spirit
34:07we are of
34:08and I quote to you
34:10that story
34:10in the gospels
34:13as Jesus
34:13was going on his way
34:15to Jerusalem
34:16and the people
34:18of
34:19I can't remember
34:22the town
34:23they refused
34:25him entry
34:26they didn't want
34:27to know him
34:27and it says
34:28the reason being
34:29we are told
34:29he'd set his face
34:30towards Jerusalem
34:31and because of
34:33their rejection
34:34James and John
34:35said to the Lord Jesus
34:36shall we call down fire
34:38and we burn
34:39all these people up
34:39that just have rejected you
34:41let's get rid of them all
34:42and Jesus said
34:43no he says
34:44you don't know
34:44what manner of spirit
34:45you are of
34:46I have come
34:48to save
34:48the lost
34:49not to destroy
34:50to save
34:51to seek
34:52and to save
34:52that is the job
34:54that we have been given
34:55but it is very
34:57very difficult
34:57nowadays
34:58to find those
35:00that are seeking
35:01and if you do find
35:02some that are seeking
35:03the enemy
35:05is very
35:06very close
35:07at hand
35:08to bring
35:09more arguments
35:11against
35:11that person
35:13unless they are
35:14very clearly
35:15definitely determined
35:16to try and
35:18persuade
35:18and convince him
35:19that the church
35:20is not the way
35:21to go
35:21the church
35:22is the way
35:23to go
35:23the church
35:24is being sorely
35:25oppressed
35:25and that is what
35:26happened to
35:27the Israelites
35:28as well
35:28they were sorely
35:29oppressed
35:30because they turned
35:31away from God
35:32the church
35:33is turning away
35:33from God
35:34exactly the same
35:35as the Israelites
35:36do
35:36not the true church
35:37but the general church
35:39in the countries
35:40all over the world
35:42they have turned
35:42away from God
35:43LGBT
35:44has come in
35:45now
35:45same sex marriages
35:47has come in
35:48transgenderism
35:51is being accepted
35:52that's not the church
35:53of God
35:54the church of God
35:55is you and I
35:56it is us
35:57who want to know
35:58what the Bible says
35:59and want to believe
36:00and want to understand
36:01that our hope
36:03is in heaven
36:04he's given us
36:05a reason
36:05he's given us
36:06the word of God
36:07and that is what
36:08we have been given
36:09this word
36:10is a culmination
36:11of a description
36:12of the character
36:13of God
36:14of his likes
36:15and his desires
36:16and his needs
36:16and what his goal
36:19is for us
36:20all at the end
36:21it is building
36:23the kingdom of heaven
36:24and it is bringing
36:25in a population
36:27of believing spirits
36:29we've told
36:30in the book of Hebrews
36:32we have not come
36:33to Mount Zion
36:33and to the city
36:34of the living God
36:35the heavenly Jerusalem
36:36to an innumerable
36:38company of angels
36:39to the general assembly
36:41and church
36:42of the firstborn
36:43who are registered
36:44in heaven
36:45to God the judge
36:46of all
36:47to the spirits
36:47of just men
36:48made perfect
36:49that is where
36:50we have come
36:51to Jesus
36:52the mediator
36:53of the new covenant
36:54and so our faith
36:55is on the line
36:56we need to make sure
36:57that we do believe
36:58that we do trust
36:59and we do
37:00and we do
37:01exercise
37:02our faith
37:03because faith
37:04without works
37:05is dead
37:05and unless we have faith
37:07it is impossible
37:08to please God
37:09and so let us
37:11let us look
37:12to our relationships
37:13with one another
37:14whether it is
37:15a husband
37:15and whether it is
37:16a wife
37:17wife and a husband
37:18and a husband
37:18and wife
37:19and parents
37:20to children
37:21or whether it is
37:22brothers and sisters
37:23in Christ
37:23let us make sure
37:25that we are
37:26conducting ourselves
37:27in the manner
37:28in which Christ
37:29is wanting us
37:30to conduct ourselves
37:31and to be
37:32somebody who is
37:33encouragement
37:34and an exhortation
37:36to the believers
37:38and to those
37:39with whom
37:40we have to do
37:41and so not only
37:43do wives
37:44be submissive
37:45to their own husbands
37:46but also too
37:48husbands love your wives
37:49believers submit
37:51to the teaching
37:52of the word of God
37:53what God's word
37:54says here
37:54let us be Berean
37:56and let us check out
37:57and see what is said
37:58whether it is true
37:59or whether it is not
38:00and if it is not true
38:02then get hold
38:02of the preacher
38:03and say look
38:03I don't believe that
38:05I don't understand that
38:06can you give a reason
38:07for why you said that
38:09preachers make mistakes
38:11preachers need to be taught
38:12we are not infallible
38:13the man who stands up here
38:14is not infallible
38:15I was sitting in a chair
38:17last week
38:18and the week before that
38:19I was the congregation
38:20somebody else was standing up here
38:22now tonight
38:23I am up here
38:23being judged
38:25by everyone who is listening
38:26so we need to be Berean
38:28and we need to understand
38:29who we are in Christ
38:31that we might be able
38:32to be that caring
38:33loving kind
38:34and considerate brother
38:35to say look
38:36you made a mistake there
38:37this is the way to go
38:38and if it is right
38:39if what is being said
38:40is right
38:41then encouragement
38:42is also a good idea
38:44so we need to be able
38:46to understand
38:46that it is not
38:48the external
38:49but it is
38:50what he says
38:51in verse 4
38:52the hidden person
38:53of the heart
38:54with the incorruptible beauty
38:56of a gentle
38:57and a quiet spirit
38:58which is very precious
39:00in the sight of God
39:01and though that verse
39:02is in verse 4
39:03and it comes underneath
39:04the heading
39:05of being submissive
39:06to husbands
39:07the wives
39:07yet we all
39:10need to have
39:11spirits
39:12of incorruptible beauty
39:15of being able
39:16to be quiet
39:17of being able
39:18to have communion
39:20with one another
39:21and access
39:21to the advice
39:23and the counsel
39:24we need
39:24but not only that
39:25we need to be able
39:26to have the openness
39:27of the person
39:28who is questioning
39:28and asking
39:30what is the hope
39:32that we have
39:33within us
39:33are we able
39:34to do that clearly
39:35are we able
39:36to do that
39:37with authority
39:39or are we unsure
39:41of our position
39:42in Christ
39:43we are priests
39:45we are a royal priesthood
39:47a holy generation
39:48we are not just
39:49some insignificant
39:50little bunch of people
39:52that come from Wendover
39:53and from
39:54from Chesham
39:56and
39:56from Pista
39:58and all over the show
39:59and just happen
40:00together here
40:00no God has ordained
40:02that we should be here
40:03and so may we ask
40:04the Lord
40:05that he would strengthen
40:05us in our walk
40:06and encourage us
40:08and enable us
40:08to continue being built up
40:10in the most holy faith
40:11Amen
40:12in his love
40:14first as the ocean
40:17loving kindness
40:20as the flood
40:22when the prince
40:24of life
40:25our ransom
40:26shed for us
40:29his precious blood
40:32who his love
40:35will not remember
40:37who can cease
40:40to sing
40:41his praise
40:43he can never
40:46be forgotten
40:47through our
40:50times
40:51eternal days
40:54on the
40:56mountain
40:57of crucifixion
40:59fountains
41:01open
41:02deep and wide
41:05through the
41:06flood
41:07of God's
41:09mercy
41:10flowed a vast
41:12and gracious
41:14tide
41:15grace and love
41:18like mighty rivers
41:21poured in session
41:24from above
41:27and has peace
41:29and perfect justice
41:32keeps the guilty
41:35world
41:36in love
41:38of the
41:40love
41:41for you
41:44to thank you
41:47for the
41:47love
41:48and
41:48for you
41:50to thank you
41:52for the
41:52for you
41:52to thank you
41:53for your
41:54experience
41:55and think
41:56about
41:56in the
41:57Luke
41:57Lord
41:57you
41:58to that
