00:02:19Alleluia.
00:02:20Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised
00:02:27up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke by the mouth
00:02:34of His holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of
00:02:40all who hate us, to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant,
00:02:47the oath which He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand
00:02:53of our enemies, might serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days
00:03:00of our life. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before
00:03:06the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness
00:03:12of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from
00:03:18on high, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide
00:03:24our feet into the way of peace. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
00:03:29Spirit.
00:03:30And it was in the evening, now, and I shall be, for what I am.
00:03:34And very early in the morning after the Sabbath, they came to the sepulchre at sunrise. Alleluia.

00:03:52Let us once again hold up in prayer and petition all those who have asked for our prayers, for their
00:03:57health, for their healing, or for any special need that they may have, that God, who is the
00:04:02Father of mercy through His Son, Jesus, may grant them all that is needful to them. We pray especially
00:04:08for Laura, Stan, Kelly, Curtis, Joshua, Tom, Karen, Gregory, Teresa, Michelle, Susan, Gary, Gary and Sandra,
00:04:20Fred, Teresa, Carla, Francine, Eileen, Joyce, Michael, Francis, Dan, Bob, Brian, Tom, Dawn, Fran,
00:04:32Zosia, Bob, Bishop John, Bishop Paul, Gordon, Amy, Liz, Dorothy, Jennifer, Daniel and Julia, Steve,
00:04:42Susan, Ed, Chip, Jacqueline, Don, Barbara, and all in need of God's healing grace.
00:04:49We pray for all those who serve in the armed forces of the United States, especially Michael,
00:04:55Mark, Patrick, Timothy, Charlie, Father Joseph, Father Andrew, Father Andrew, Father Nadim,
00:05:02Father Matyush, and Father Joseph. We pray for all of our veterans, all those in public service,
00:05:10our civil servants, police officers, and firefighters, for all active and retired clergy of our Holy
00:05:15Church, for all students and teachers at Mount Pleasant Middle School, for the residents and
00:05:20staff of City Mission of Schenectady, for the residents and staff of Pathways, for all members
00:05:25of the Civil Air Patrol, and for all who have asked for our prayers for any need or intention.
00:05:31This we remember and pray for in a special way, the people and the clergy of St. Mary's Mission Parish
00:05:37in Lublin, Wisconsin. We bring all these prayers together before God our Father in the words Jesus
00:05:43taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
00:05:51on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as
00:05:58we forgive
00:05:59those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
00:06:06Let us pray. O God, who dost gladden us by the yearly feast day of our Lord's resurrection,
00:06:13deign to grant that we, who celebrate these solemnities in time, may reach heavenly joys in eternity.
00:06:21We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of
00:06:26the
00:06:26holy ghost, one God forever and ever. Amen. Well, good morning, everyone. And this, uh, we went from a
00:06:36beautiful spring back into a little bit of chilly winter weather. Uh, but, uh, this, this too will soon
00:06:44pass. Uh, so, uh, keep your chin up and we'll don't get rain in your eyes, but, uh, you know,
00:06:51we'll, we'll get
00:06:52through it. Um, so Easter, it is more than a day, of course, as we always proclaim. It is a
00:06:5850-day
00:07:00celebration, which we are just beginning. Uh, so let us continue in our Easter joy, uh, and in our
00:07:08happiness given to us by our Lord's resurrection. Uh, remember that we have our new, uh, prayer book,
00:07:16our, our missal book that includes all music. Uh, so please use those. If you don't have them,
00:07:21they're on the back table. Um, the men's retreat information is on the back table for the upcoming
00:07:27men's retreat, which is, uh, June 17th through the 20th. Uh, it might be a little off there, but, uh,
00:07:36it is an amazing event. Uh, if, uh, the men of the church gathered in prayer, uh, before the, in
00:07:44the
00:07:44perpetual adoration chapel before the blessed sacrament is a absolutely awesome, awesome thing
00:07:52to do. Uh, and we're going to go on a coal mine tour, uh, this year, uh, have a picnic,
00:07:58uh, probably
00:07:59going to have a rededication ceremony at the seminary. Uh, so there's a lot of great stuff going
00:08:05on with the men's retreat this year. So please make definite effort, uh, to come. Uh, we will of
00:08:12course cover the cost for any man who wishes to attend, uh, basket social prep. Uh, it's here.
00:08:20It's next week. Uh, so please remember we have one Holy mass next week. It will be at 9 AM.
00:08:27Uh,
00:08:28so we can get over to the South Schenectady fire hall and get everything prepared. Uh, we'll be making
00:08:34Gwumke on Thursday, the 23rd. That's this coming Thursday. Uh, I imagine we can bring baskets on
00:08:41that Thursday as well. If people have any last minute, uh, contributions of baskets, uh, definitely
00:08:48take a look downstairs. The baskets are piling up and they look absolutely awesome. Uh, thank
00:08:54everyone for, uh, your skill, your dedication, your hard work, uh, your artistry in preparing
00:09:01those baskets. Uh, please also remember that there are signup sheets. We need workers, uh,
00:09:08people who can help with the ticket table, the entryway table, the, uh, the kitchen, the dessert
00:09:15table, uh, and all the other, uh, things that we, uh, have to do to make this event successful.
00:09:22We are definitely getting a lot of traction in social media, just on neighborhoods. I think
00:09:28we had 392 people look at the, at the event, uh, who saw it. So that's a good thing also
00:09:35on
00:09:35Facebook. So, um, and there should be ads in the paper today and on Friday, uh, covering the basket
00:09:43social. So, uh, please keep an eye out for those. Uh, our course youth encampment, uh, will be starting
00:09:51July 4th. And we also have a youth convocation this year in New Hampshire. Uh, if anyone is interested,
00:09:59any young people are interested or any adults would like to be chaperones or, or work at these events,
00:10:06please talk to me. Uh, we will make that happen. Um, this week ahead, a little bit of a, uh,
00:10:14of course,
00:10:14getting ready for the basket social food pantry tomorrow. Uh, there's a misprint. The parish committee
00:10:19meeting is actually on Tuesday, uh, at 5 p.m. Um, um, Gowumki making Thursday. Uh, we'll probably,
00:10:28um, I will be at Pathways on Friday, um, and, um, Good Shepherd Sunday. Next Sunday, again, only one Holy
00:10:37Mass at 9 a.m. Uh, there, I think that's everything. Did I, did I miss anything? All right. Wonderful.
00:10:46Uh,
00:10:46uh, let's begin today with our Vidi Aquam. I saw water, uh, our Easter Asperges. So please rise.
00:11:01I saw water coming forth.
00:11:05Come on.
00:11:06All right.
00:11:11Hallelujah.
00:11:16And when you werecopeam,
00:11:20you came.
00:11:21They were straight,
00:11:23they shall stay.
00:11:25Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
00:11:38Praise God, whom all blessings flow.
00:11:43Praise Him, watchers here below.
00:11:50Alleluia, Alleluia.
00:11:52Praise Him, Lord, heavenly host.
00:11:57Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
00:12:05Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
00:12:16Show us your mercy, Lord. Alleluia.
00:12:20And with us your salvation, Alleluia.
00:12:24Lord, hear our prayer.
00:12:26Let our fire come to you.
00:12:28The Lord be with you.
00:12:29And with us with you.
00:12:30Let us pray.
00:12:32Father, we call upon you to abide with your people who are assembled here.
00:12:37Cleanse us of our sins and make us aware of the promise of your Son,
00:12:41that where two or three are gathered together in his name, he is with them.
00:12:46Through this Holy Eucharist we celebrate.
00:12:49Make us worthy to sit at his table in the kingdom of heaven.
00:12:53And we ask this through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord.
00:12:57Amen.
00:13:14Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia,
00:13:27Who did once above the cross, Alleluia,
00:13:39Suffer to redeem our laws, Alleluia,
00:13:49In the praise that let us sing, Alleluia,
00:14:01On to Christ our heavenly King, Alleluia,
00:14:10Who endured the cross and sing, Alleluia,
00:14:21Singers to redeem and sing, Alleluia,
00:14:31Good morning, my dear brothers and sisters,
00:14:38And welcome on this third Sunday of Easter,
00:14:42Still at the beginning of this beautiful season of joy
00:14:45In which we celebrate our Lord's resurrection.
00:14:49Today we encounter the disciples on the road to Emmaus
00:14:53And we ask the question,
00:14:56What do they bring to eat?
00:14:59Today's Holy Mass is offered for each and every one of you,
00:15:03For all of our parishioners, all of our members,
00:15:05All those who find their home of faith here with us
00:15:08At Holy Name of Jesus in Schenectady.
00:15:11Today's Holy Mass is the contemporary rite found in your pamphlets.
00:15:15And we begin in the name of the Father,
00:15:17And of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:15:19Amen.
00:15:20Lord, bless us with the wisdom to praise you in spirit and in truth,
00:15:24So that by following your holy will,
00:15:26We may gain eternal salvation.
00:15:29Amen.
00:15:29My dear brothers and sisters,
00:15:32Let us now pause to confess our sins to God
00:15:34And prepare ourselves so that we may worthily participate
00:15:38In this holy sacrifice.
00:15:40Please now complete your examination of conscience,
00:15:43Confessing your sins privately to God
00:15:45And seeking his forgiveness.
00:16:04How we called our sinfulness
00:16:06And seeking reconciliation with God and each other,
00:16:09Let us now recite the second form of the confit
00:16:12You are found in your pamphlets as our confession.
00:16:15I confess to Almighty God
00:16:17In the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
00:16:20All the saints and you, my brothers and sisters,
00:16:24That I have sinned through my own fault,
00:16:26In my thoughts, in my words,
00:16:29In what I have done or failed to do,
00:16:32I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary,
00:16:34All the saints and you, my brothers and sisters,
00:16:37To pray for me to the Lord our God.
00:16:40As an act of penance for our sinfulness,
00:16:42Let us this evening, before we go to bed,
00:16:46Continue in our Easter joy
00:16:47By thanking the Lord for all he has done for us.
00:16:52May Almighty God have mercy on us,
00:16:54Forgive us our sins,
00:16:55And bring us to everlasting life.
00:16:57Amen.
00:16:57May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you
00:16:59And with his authority vested in me,
00:17:01I absolve you from all your sins.
00:17:03In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
00:17:06And of the Holy Spirit.
00:17:07Amen.
00:17:09Amen.
00:17:12Amen.
00:17:13My eyes are ever upon the Lord,
00:17:15Who frees my feet from the snare.
00:17:18Alleluia.
00:17:20Look upon me, have pity on me,
00:17:23For I am alone and afflicted.
00:17:25Alleluia.
00:17:26Glory be to the Father,
00:17:28And to the Son,
00:17:29And to the Holy Spirit.
00:17:30As it was in the beginning,
00:17:32Now we shall be,
00:17:34For God and the Son.
00:17:39Kyrie eleison,
00:17:44Kyrie eleison,
00:17:46Christ eleison,
00:17:55Kyrie eleison,
00:18:04Glory to God in the highest.......
00:18:40Now is risen from the dead.
00:18:45Christ is risen, we are risen.
00:18:50And upon us happy rays.
00:18:54Amen, do and gleams of glory.
00:18:59And the brightness of thy face.
00:19:02Hell with hearts and hell and well.
00:19:07If we on earth may fruitful be.
00:19:12And the angels and the other.
00:19:16And the other Lord with thee.
00:19:23The Lord be with you.
00:19:26And also with you.
00:19:30Let us pray.
00:19:34Gracious Lord Jesus,
00:19:36you accompanied your souring disciples
00:19:39today's journey to Emmaus.
00:19:41Go with us on our journey through this world.
00:19:45Guide us, uphold us,
00:19:47and make our hearts burn within us.
00:19:50We ask this through this.
00:19:53May we walk in the strength of your presence
00:19:56all our days.
00:19:58For you live and reign with the Father
00:20:00and the Holy Spirit.
00:20:01One God, forever and ever.
00:20:07Amen.
00:20:09Let us now be seated and attentive
00:20:12to the Lord's word.
00:20:16Amen.
00:20:18Amen.
00:20:19Amen.
00:20:24Amen.
00:20:25Amen.
00:20:31Our first reading is a reading
00:20:33from the Acts of the Apostles.
00:20:38Then Peter stood up with the eleven,
00:20:41raised his voice, and proclaimed,
00:20:44You who are Jews,
00:20:46indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem,
00:20:48let this be known to you,
00:20:50and listen to my words.
00:20:52You who are Israelites,
00:20:54hear these words.
00:20:57Jesus, the Nazarene,
00:20:58was a man commended to you by God
00:21:00with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
00:21:03which God worked through him in your midst,
00:21:06as you yourselves know.
00:21:09This man, delivered up by the set plan
00:21:12and foreknowledge of God,
00:21:14you killed,
00:21:15using lawless men to crucify him.
00:21:18But God raised him up,
00:21:20releasing him from the throes of death,
00:21:22because it was impossible for him
00:21:24to be held by it.
00:21:26For David says of him,
00:21:29I saw the Lord ever before me.
00:21:31With him at my right hand,
00:21:33I shall not be disturbed.
00:21:35Therefore my heart has been glad
00:21:37and my tongue has exalted.
00:21:39My flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
00:21:42because you will not abandon my soul
00:21:44to the netherworld,
00:21:45nor will you suffer your Holy One
00:21:48to see corruption.
00:21:49You have made known to me
00:21:51the paths of life.
00:21:52You will fill me with joy
00:21:54in your presence.
00:21:57My brothers,
00:21:58one can confidently say to you
00:22:00about the patriarch David,
00:22:02that he died and was buried,
00:22:04and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
00:22:08But since he was a prophet
00:22:10and knew that God had sworn an oath to him,
00:22:13that he would set one of his descendants
00:22:15upon his throne,
00:22:17he foresaw and spoke
00:22:19of the resurrection of the Christ,
00:22:21that neither was he abandoned
00:22:23to the netherworld,
00:22:24nor did his flesh
00:22:25see corruption.
00:22:27God raised this Jesus.
00:22:29Of this we are all witnesses.
00:22:32Exalted at the right hand of God,
00:22:34he received the promise
00:22:36of the Holy Spirit
00:22:37from the Father
00:22:38and poured him forth
00:22:39as you see and hear.
00:22:42the word of the Lord.
00:22:44Thanks be to God.
00:22:47Our responsorial psalm.
00:22:49Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:22:52Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:22:56Keep me, O God,
00:22:57for in you I take refuge.
00:22:59I say to the Lord,
00:23:01my Lord are you.
00:23:03O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup,
00:23:06you it is who hold fast my lot.
00:23:10Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:23:14I bless the Lord who counsels me.
00:23:17Even in the night my heart exhorts me.
00:23:20I set the Lord ever before me.
00:23:22With him at my right hand
00:23:24I shall not be disturbed.
00:23:26Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:23:30Therefore my heart is glad
00:23:32and my soul rejoices.
00:23:33My body too abides in confidence,
00:23:36because you will not abandon my soul
00:23:38to the netherworld,
00:23:39nor will you suffer your faithful one
00:23:41to undergo corruption.
00:23:44Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:23:47You will show me the path to life,
00:23:49abounding joy in your presence,
00:23:51the delights at your right hand forever.
00:23:55Lord, you will show us the path of life.
00:23:59Our second reading
00:24:01is a reading from the first letter of St. Peter.
00:24:06Beloved,
00:24:08if you invoke as father
00:24:10him who judges impartially
00:24:12according to each one's works,
00:24:15conduct yourselves with reverence
00:24:17during the time of your sojourning,
00:24:20realizing that you were ransomed
00:24:22from your feudal conduct
00:24:23handed on by your ancestors,
00:24:26not with perishable things
00:24:28like silver or gold,
00:24:29but with the precious blood of Christ
00:24:31as of a spotless, unblemished lamb.
00:24:35He was known before the foundation
00:24:37of the world,
00:24:38but revealed in the final time for you,
00:24:40who through him believe in God,
00:24:43who raised him from the dead
00:24:44and gave him glory,
00:24:46so that your faith and hope
00:24:48are in God.
00:24:49The word of the Lord.
00:24:51Thanks be to God.
00:25:09Please rise.
00:25:33Behold the Lamb of God
00:25:35who takes away the sin of the world.
00:26:01The Lord be with you.
00:26:03And with you.
00:26:04A reading from the Holy Gospel
00:26:06according to St. Luke.
00:26:08Glory be to you, O Lord.
00:26:10That very day,
00:26:11the first day of the week,
00:26:13two of Jesus' disciples
00:26:15were going to a village
00:26:16seven miles from Jerusalem
00:26:18called Emmaus,
00:26:19and they were conversing
00:26:21about all things that had occurred.
00:26:23And it happened that
00:26:24while they were conversing
00:26:26and debating,
00:26:27Jesus himself drew near
00:26:28and walked with them,
00:26:30but their eyes were prevented
00:26:32from recognizing him.
00:26:33He asked them,
00:26:35What are you discussing
00:26:36as you walk along?
00:26:38They stopped,
00:26:39looking downcast.
00:26:40One of them,
00:26:41named Clopas,
00:26:43said to him in reply,
00:26:44Are you the only visitor
00:26:46to Jerusalem
00:26:47who does not know
00:26:48of the things
00:26:49that have taken place
00:26:50there in these days?
00:26:51And he replied to them,
00:26:53What sort of things?
00:26:55They said to him,
00:26:56The things that happened
00:26:58to Jesus,
00:26:58the Nazarene,
00:26:59who was a prophet,
00:27:01mighty in deed and word,
00:27:02before God
00:27:03and all the people,
00:27:04how our chief priests
00:27:06and rulers
00:27:06both handed him over
00:27:08to a sentence of death
00:27:10and crucified him.
00:27:11But we were hoping
00:27:13that he would be the one
00:27:14to redeem Israel,
00:27:16and beside all this,
00:27:17it is now the third day
00:27:19since this took place.
00:27:20Some women from our group,
00:27:22however,
00:27:23have astounded us.
00:27:25They were at the tomb
00:27:28early in the morning
00:27:29and did not find his body.
00:27:31They came back
00:27:32and reported
00:27:33that they had indeed
00:27:34seen a vision of angels
00:27:35who announced
00:27:36that he was alive.
00:27:38Then some of those with us
00:27:40went to the tomb
00:27:41and found things
00:27:42just as the women
00:27:44had described,
00:27:45but him they did not see.
00:27:47And he said to them,
00:27:48Oh, how foolish you are!
00:27:50How slow of heart
00:27:52to believe
00:27:52all that the prophets spoke!
00:27:54Was it not necessary
00:27:56that the Christ
00:27:57should suffer these things
00:27:58and enter into his glory?
00:28:01Then, beginning with Moses
00:28:02and all the prophets,
00:28:04he interpreted to them
00:28:06what referred to him
00:28:08in all the scriptures.
00:28:09As they approached the village
00:28:11to which they were going,
00:28:13he gave the impression
00:28:14that he was going on farther,
00:28:16but they urged him,
00:28:18Stay with us,
00:28:18for it is nearly evening,
00:28:20and the day is almost over.
00:28:22So he went in
00:28:23to stay with them,
00:28:24and it happened
00:28:25that while he was
00:28:26with them at table,
00:28:27he took bread,
00:28:29said the blessing,
00:28:30broke it,
00:28:31and gave it to them.
00:28:39With that,
00:28:42their eyes were opened,
00:28:44and they recognized him,
00:28:47but he vanished
00:28:48from their sight.
00:28:49They said to each other,
00:28:51Were not our hearts
00:28:52burning within us
00:28:54while he spoke to us
00:28:55on the way
00:28:56and opened the scriptures
00:28:57to us?
00:28:58So they set out at once
00:29:00and returned to Jerusalem,
00:29:02where they found
00:29:03gathered together
00:29:04the eleven
00:29:04and those with them
00:29:06who were saying,
00:29:07The Lord has truly
00:29:08been raised
00:29:09and has appeared
00:29:09to Simon.
00:29:11Then the two recounted
00:29:13what had taken place
00:29:14on the way
00:29:15and how he was made known
00:29:17to them
00:29:18in the breaking
00:29:19of the bread.
00:29:20this is
00:29:21the gospel
00:29:22of the Lord.
00:29:24Praise be to you,
00:29:25O Lord Jesus Christ.
00:29:46потому that
00:29:54Jesus said it
00:29:55is
00:29:56as we reall
00:29:56other
00:29:56come on.
00:29:57Come on,
00:29:57thou
00:29:57Come with thy grace, and heaven we aim, to fill the hearts which thou hast made.
00:30:10Come with thy grace, and heaven we aim, to fill the hearts which thou hast made.
00:30:21Great therapy, to thee we cry, O highest gift of God, most high.
00:30:33O living blood, O fire, O love, and sweet anointing from above.
00:30:44O living blood, O fire, O love, and sweet anointing from above.
00:31:14That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village
00:31:20seven miles from Jerusalem, a village called Emos.
00:31:25In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:31:29Christ is risen, alleluia.
00:31:36Alright, we're going to try that again.
00:31:38We're going to practice, right?
00:31:39Christ is risen, alleluia.
00:31:49In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:31:53Amen.
00:31:54As many of you know, I love to cook.
00:31:59Especially to prepare food for others.
00:32:02To have guests over to the house, to bring some great stuff here.
00:32:07A lot of us do.
00:32:09I know Lindy prepared a beautiful breakfast.
00:32:11This morning, for all of us.
00:32:13So, looking forward to that.
00:32:15But cooking is such a wonderful thing to do.
00:32:18Food is a thing around which we can gather.
00:32:22We can enjoy each other's company.
00:32:24We can experience some new things.
00:32:28Right?
00:32:29Now, I get all my cooking tips from YouTube.
00:32:32You know, in the old days, I used to watch television.
00:32:35You'd watch Julia Child.
00:32:36You'd watch whatever Chef was on.
00:32:39The Galloping Gourmet.
00:32:40Does anybody remember the Galloping Gourmet?
00:32:42I used to watch the Galloping Gourmet.
00:32:45And, you know, so on YouTube, I've got a whole list of people I watch.
00:32:50Chef Jean-Pierre.
00:32:51Excellent.
00:32:52He teaches you everything you need to know about cooking.
00:32:55The French Cooking Academy with Stéphane.
00:33:00I think I've got a couple others listed here.
00:33:03Spain on a Fork.
00:33:05Mad Scientist Barbecue.
00:33:07Right?
00:33:08They're all wonderful teachers.
00:33:11And they kind of urge you to actually try something new.
00:33:15To experiment.
00:33:16Right?
00:33:17To, you know, so that you're not just doing the same thing over as a chicken every day.
00:33:22Chicken's wonderful, but, you know, it gets a little boring.
00:33:24So, you try some new things, and that's great.
00:33:27On the other side of my watch list, I watch, I'm going to look at the proper name here,
00:33:34Tasting History with Max Miller.
00:33:37Max Miller's wonderful.
00:33:38What he does is he actually goes back, and he discovers foods that were prepared in ancient times,
00:33:45in medieval times, in early modern times.
00:33:49And he prepares those foods as they were prepared.
00:33:53So, he'll find some recipe from ancient Rome, or Persia, or Mesopotamia.
00:33:59You know, what did Alexander the Great eat?
00:34:01Right?
00:34:02What did Genghis Khan eat?
00:34:04And he'll prepare foods like that.
00:34:06So, he gives you a real history of food.
00:34:10That's what we're going to talk about today.
00:34:12Talk about the history of food a little bit.
00:34:15We're going to go on a food tour.
00:34:18So, as I was preparing for this talk this morning,
00:34:22I kind of thought to myself,
00:34:24what did those disciples take on the road with them to eat?
00:34:29You know, what were their road snacks?
00:34:31I mean, we all know.
00:34:32We remember those trips with our kids and with our families on the road.
00:34:36We always had stuff with us.
00:34:38Well, in the times of Jesus, nobody left home without food.
00:34:44So, what did they have?
00:34:45Did they have Cheez-Its?
00:34:46Did they have pretzels?
00:34:48Did they have M&M's?
00:34:49Probably not.
00:34:50But they definitely took food.
00:34:52You didn't leave home for a trip without food.
00:34:58There was no 24-hour price chopper or Hannaford or Market Basket.
00:35:04There was no place to go and shop.
00:35:07And usually, by the time you ended your journey,
00:35:10all of the stalls where vendors sold food were closed.
00:35:14People went home when you got to your destination.
00:35:20So, what did those disciples bring with them?
00:35:26Well, common, very common among travelers in Jesus' time were several things.
00:35:32You brought bread.
00:35:34Bread was important.
00:35:35Bread was essential.
00:35:36And bread lasted, right?
00:35:38They had different kinds of bread.
00:35:41They had wheat bread, of course, which was very fancy bread.
00:35:43But they also had barley bread and bread made from oats and things like that as well.
00:35:48So, they were very dense kind of breads.
00:35:52They had parched or roasted grain.
00:35:55It was kind of like a little snack, right?
00:35:57So, you'd roast the grains and you'd put those in a little pouch
00:36:00and you could snack on those grains.
00:36:03It gave you a high energy boost.
00:36:06You had dates and raisins, you know, dried things because, again, they lasted.
00:36:11You had olive oil and you had wine.
00:36:15So, that's the stuff a typical traveler would bring with them.
00:36:26Now, Jesus catches up with these travelers.
00:36:30And as he catches up, they start talking.
00:36:32And he's describing all the things in Scripture that relate to him, right?
00:36:38He's teaching them.
00:36:40And he's opening up their minds to what he was all about.
00:36:45Now, they didn't recognize him, of course, as Scripture tells us.
00:36:48They were like, oh, wow, this guy's cool.
00:36:50He knows a lot of stuff.
00:36:52And they're sort of approaching their destination.
00:36:55They're getting there.
00:36:57They kind of notice something.
00:36:59Jesus didn't have any food with them, right?
00:37:02He didn't have a little satchel or bag or anything like that.
00:37:06He's just walking along with them.
00:37:08He had no food.
00:37:11And in good, traditional Middle Eastern hospitality, they said, hey, come stay with us.
00:37:18You don't have anything.
00:37:19We'll take care of you.
00:37:21Come stay.
00:37:23Come and stay with us.
00:37:24As Scripture recounts, stay with us for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.
00:37:31They knew he couldn't get anything to eat, right?
00:37:34All the shops were closed.
00:37:36No 24-hour supermarket.
00:37:41They get into their lodging and they bring out their store of food, right?
00:37:47They're like, oh, let's put the food on the table.
00:37:49It's time to eat.
00:37:50They're like, oh, let's put the food on the table.
00:37:52And they presented their gifts to him.
00:37:57This is important.
00:37:58They presented their gifts to him.
00:38:03He gave them back the bread.
00:38:07But it had been changed.
00:38:10It was now the bread of heaven.
00:38:13The bread for our eternal journey.
00:38:16His own body and blood, he offered them back from the gifts that they had brought.
00:38:22And in that, they recognized him.
00:38:26Their eyes were opened because of what he gave them from the gifts that they brought.
00:38:35They received the grace to really see.
00:38:40And they received the grace to really understand what happens here.
00:38:46The word of God.
00:38:48What happens here.
00:38:51The table of the Lord.
00:38:53They understood it.
00:38:57Our gathering here, our coming together, and our gifts are that important.
00:39:07This bread.
00:39:10It's your gift.
00:39:12We don't really understand that, do we?
00:39:15This is your gift.
00:39:17You brought this.
00:39:20I wasn't in my kitchen last night making these.
00:39:25But, the dollar you put in the collection plate, your generosity gets this.
00:39:33So you bring it.
00:39:35It is your gift that we place on the altar.
00:39:45This wine is your gift.
00:39:49I don't have a winemaking press in my basement.
00:39:54And even if I did, it would still be your gift.
00:39:57Because you would buy the grapes.
00:39:59And the yeast.
00:40:01And the water.
00:40:02And all that's needed to make this.
00:40:05It is your gift.
00:40:07Just as those disciples place their gifts before Jesus,
00:40:12Jesus, you are placing your gifts on this altar.
00:40:18And he is returning to you his very body and blood.
00:40:23He's giving you back from the gifts you have brought.
00:40:27And in that, he is giving you great and awesome grace.
00:40:32In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:40:35Amen.
00:40:37Amen.
00:40:38Amen.
00:40:38Amen.
00:40:40Amen.
00:40:41Amen.
00:40:50Let us now rise and together profess our faith.
00:40:54I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
00:40:58maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and seen.
00:41:02I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
00:41:07eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light,
00:41:11true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.
00:41:17Through him all things are made for us and for our salvation.
00:41:21He came down from heaven by the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:41:25He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man.
00:41:30For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
00:41:34He suffered death and was buried.
00:41:36On the third day, he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures.
00:41:40He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
00:41:45He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
00:41:49and his kingdom will have no end.
00:41:51I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,
00:41:55who proceeds from the Father with the Father and the Son.
00:41:59He is worshiped and glorified.
00:42:01He has spoken through the prophets.
00:42:03I believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic church.
00:42:07I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
00:42:10I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
00:42:15Amen.
00:42:16The Lord be with you.
00:42:18And also with you.
00:42:19Let us pray.
00:42:21Pray in, with, and through the Lord,
00:42:23who is truly risen and has appeared.
00:42:26Our response will be, Lord, hear our prayer.

00:44:53through Christ our Lord.
00:44:54Amen.
00:44:55Please be seated.
00:45:01If then you are raised with Christ,
00:45:03seek what is above,
00:45:04where Christ is seated,
00:45:06at the right hand of God.
00:45:08Alleluia.
00:45:18O Father,

00:51:35And let it become for us
00:51:37The body and blood of Your Son
00:51:39Our Lord Jesus Christ
00:51:41The day before He suffered and died
00:51:44Our Lord desired to make His love known to His disciples
00:51:47And all who would follow Him
00:51:49He therefore instituted these sacred mysteries
00:51:52By which He joined Himself with them spiritually and bodily
00:51:55In His whole being
00:51:57And abides with us forever
00:51:59At that moment, so sacred for all of humanity
00:52:03Jesus took bread into His holy hands
00:52:06And looking up to heaven
00:52:07To You, His Almighty Father
00:52:09He gave You thanks
00:52:11He blessed the bread
00:52:13Broke it
00:52:14And gave it to His disciples
00:52:15Saying
00:52:17Take this, all of you, and eat it
00:52:20For this is My body
00:52:22Which is given for you
00:52:39When supper had ended
00:52:40He took the cup
00:52:42In the same way
00:52:43He gave you thanks
00:52:44Blessed it
00:52:46And gave it to His disciples
00:52:47Saying
00:52:49Take this, all of you
00:52:51And drink from it
00:52:52For this is the cup of My blood
00:52:54The blood of the new
00:52:55And everlasting covenant
00:52:57Which shall be shed for you
00:52:59And for many
00:52:59For the forgiveness of sins
00:53:01As often as you do this
00:53:03Do it in remembrance of Me
00:53:19Father, in celebration of the memory
00:53:21Of Jesus Christ, Your Son
00:53:23We are people
00:53:23We call His passion

00:53:26And ascension into glory
00:53:27For the many gifts You have given us
00:53:29We offer You this pure, holy, and spotless offering

00:53:44And the bread and wine
00:53:46Offered by Your priest, Melchizedek
00:53:48In humility
00:53:49We ask, Father
00:53:50That these offerings be carried
00:53:52By Your angel
00:53:53To Your high altar in heaven
00:53:54So that we
00:53:55Who receive the sacred body
00:53:56And blood of Your Son
00:53:57From this altar
00:53:58May be filled with Your grace
00:54:00And blessing
00:54:02Remember, Lord

00:54:23Who rest in Christ
00:54:25Find happiness
00:54:26Light and peace
00:54:27And we who trust
00:54:28In Your love
00:54:29Also as to be included
00:54:30In the fellowship
00:54:31Of Your holy apostles
00:54:32Martyrs and saints
00:54:33Who offered their lives to You
00:54:35They were filled
00:54:36With Your justice and mercy
00:54:38And because they lived
00:54:40In accord with the teachings
00:54:41Of Jesus
00:54:41Gained eternal joy
00:54:43Count us among them, Father
00:54:45Not because of what
00:54:46We truly deserve
00:54:47But because You are willing
00:54:48To forgive us
00:54:50We ask this in the name
00:54:51Of Your Son, Jesus Christ
00:54:53By whom You give us
00:54:54All these gifts
00:54:55You fill them with life
00:54:56And goodness
00:54:57You bless them
00:54:58And make them holy
00:55:03Through Him, with Him
00:55:05And in Him
00:55:06In the unity of the Holy Spirit

00:55:11Yours, Almighty Father
00:55:12Forever and ever
00:55:16Amen
00:55:22Let us pray with confidence
00:55:24To the Father
00:55:25In the words
00:55:27Our Savior gave us
00:55:29Our Father
00:55:32Who art in heaven
00:55:35Hallowed be thy name
00:55:40Thy kingdom come
00:55:44Thy will be done
00:55:48On earth
00:55:50As it is in heaven
00:55:55Give us this day
00:55:58Our daily bread
00:56:01And forgive us
00:56:05Our trespasses
00:56:07As we forgive those
00:56:11Who trespass against us
00:56:15And lead us not
00:56:18Into temptation
00:56:21But deliver us
00:56:24From evil
00:56:28Deliver us, Lord
00:56:29From every evil
00:56:30And grant us peace
00:56:31In our day
00:56:32In Your mercy
00:56:34Keep us free from sin
00:56:35And protect us
00:56:37From all anxiety
00:56:38As we wait
00:56:40In joyful hope
00:56:41For the coming
00:56:42Of our Savior
00:56:43Jesus Christ
00:56:45For the King
00:56:47Of the power
00:56:48And the glory
00:56:50Are Yours
00:56:51Now and forever
00:56:56The cup of blessing
00:56:58Which we bless
00:56:59Is it not a participation
00:57:01In the blood of Christ?
00:57:03The bread
00:57:04Which we break
00:57:07Is it not a participation
00:57:09In the body of Christ?
00:57:11Because there is one bread
00:57:13We who are many
00:57:14Are one body
00:57:15For we all partake
00:57:17Of the one bread
00:57:18May the union of divinity
00:57:19And humanity
00:57:20In Jesus Christ

00:57:25Lord Jesus Christ
00:57:27You said to your apostles
00:57:28I leave you peace
00:57:29My peace I give you
00:57:31Do not look at our sins
00:57:32But in the faith
00:57:33Of your church
00:57:33And grant us the peace
00:57:35And unity of your kingdom
00:57:36Where you live
