00:00:18Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
00:00:24Lord, for us your wounds were suffered. O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
00:01:02Good morning, my dear brothers and sisters, and welcome on this Passion Sunday.
00:01:07Let us begin with our morning matins found on page B5 of your White Pew prayer books.
00:01:14Page B5. Blessed be the kingdom of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
00:01:24O Lord, open my lips.
00:01:28Happy are those who mourn. God will comfort them.
00:01:32Happy is the man whose sins are forgiven, whose transgressions are pardoned.
00:01:37Happy is the man whom the Lord does not accuse of doing wrong, who is free from all deceit.
00:01:44When I did not confess my sins, I was worn out from crying all day long.
00:01:49Day and night you punish me, Lord.
00:01:51My strength was completely drained as moisture is dried up by the summer heat.
00:01:57Then I confessed my sins to you. I did not conceal my wrongdoings.
00:02:02I decided to confess them to you, and you forgave all my transgressions.
00:02:07So all your loyal people should pray to you in times of need.
00:02:11When a great flood comes rushing, it will not reach them.
00:02:15You are my hiding place. You will save me from trouble.
00:02:18I sing aloud of your salvation, because you protect me.
00:02:22The Lord says, I will teach you the way you should go.
00:02:26I will instruct you and advise you.
00:02:28Don't be stupid like a horse or a mule,
00:02:31which must be controlled with a bit and bridle to make it obey you.
00:02:35The wicked will have to suffer, but those who trust in the Lord are protected by his constant love.
00:02:42All who are righteous, be glad and resort because of what the Lord has done.
00:02:47All who obey him, shout for joy.
00:02:51And because it's Passion Sunday, we'll use the second prayer.
00:02:56Lord, for us your wounds were suffered.
00:02:58O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
00:03:01A reading taken from the book of the prophet Ezekiel.
00:03:05I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities,
00:03:09and from all your idols I will cleanse you.
00:03:12I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you,
00:03:16taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.
00:03:20I will put my spirit within you and make you live.
00:03:23You shall be my people, and I shall be your God.
00:03:27Create a pure heart in me, O God.
00:03:32Lord, have mercy.
00:03:35Christ, have mercy.
00:03:38Lord, have mercy.
00:03:41Let us once again hold up in prayer and petition all those who have asked for our prayers for their

00:05:29Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
00:05:33Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
00:05:38Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
00:05:42as we forgive those who trespass against us.
00:05:46And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:05:51Merciful Father, you are the first beginning and our last end.
00:05:55Guide and guard our restless and unquiet hearts.
00:05:58Inspire us to love you with devotion,
00:06:00and to serve our fellow Christians with generosity.
00:06:04We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
00:06:08Gracious Father, your very nature is to pardon and forgive.
00:06:12Rescue us from our stupidity.
00:06:14Teach us to confess our sins in all honesty,
00:06:17and so possess the joy of being forgiven.
00:06:20Grant this through Jesus our Lord. Amen.
00:06:26Well, good morning, everyone.
00:06:28Again, welcome on this Passion Sunday.
00:06:30The beginning of Passion Tide,
00:06:33the last week and a half before we enter into the Paschal Triduum,
00:06:40and then arrive at Easter.
00:06:42As we enter into this season of Passion Tide,
00:06:46let us redouble our Lenten observances.
00:06:49Of course, we have Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 3 p.m.
00:06:54We have Bitter Lamentations, Gosh Gajala, on Sundays at 3 p.m.
00:06:59There is your suggestions for directed giving of foods
00:07:03for those in need in the local area.
00:07:06You may leave your donations here by the Mary Altar.
00:07:09And please remember that Wednesdays and Fridays
00:07:13continue to be days of abstinence,
00:07:16days where we abstain from meat products.
00:07:18That includes beef, pork, and chicken.
00:07:21Thank you to all who helped dress the church
00:07:24in its Passion Tide array.
00:07:26Really appreciate your help and support in doing that.
00:07:31Also, thank you to Joe and Andrea.
00:07:33They did a super deep clean of the parish hall floor.
00:07:37It looks phenomenal.
00:07:39Really looks great.
00:07:40Thank you so much for that.
00:07:41That must have been a slog, so I imagine.
00:07:45Our soup and pierogi making, a soup sale and pierogi making,
00:07:50is this coming Saturday, March 28th, starting at 9 a.m.
00:07:56Please come down for that and help out with that effort,
00:07:59which supports our parish.
00:08:01Remember, all veterans, that if you are in any need,
00:08:05please talk to us.
00:08:06We are a veteran, military-friendly congregation.
00:08:09And let us know how we can help, and we will try to help.
00:08:15Please offer your prayers, again, for our seminarians.
00:08:18We ordained four men to the diaconate on the Solemnity of St. Joseph,
00:08:23which was March 19th.
00:08:25And it was a wonderful, beautiful, very emotional occasion.
00:08:30And we're so thankful that these men have stepped up.
00:08:34I had class with another eight men yesterday
00:08:37that are studying for entry into the church.
00:08:40So we've been really blessed with those called to serve the Lord.
00:08:47So please keep them in your prayers.
00:08:49Remember that next Sunday is Palm Sunday.
00:08:52We'll have a regular Holy Mass schedule,
00:08:55beginning with the blessing and distribution of palms.
00:09:00Let's see, anything else?
00:09:02This week, Feast of St. Gabriel is on Tuesday,
00:09:07and Wednesday is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
00:09:12Holy Mass at noon those days.
00:09:15Again, next Sunday is Palm Sunday.
00:09:20Good.
00:09:24I'm trying to remember what I'm doing.
00:09:26Very good.
00:09:27All right, let us, with that, today's Holy Mass,
00:09:31and just, by the way, two things.
00:09:33We are having, at the beginning of Holy Mass,
00:09:36our Lenten Penitential Service.
00:09:38Make sure you have one of these.
00:09:39You'll need it.
00:09:40They're on the back table.
00:09:43And the other thing is that today's Holy Mass is offered for Marianne Vanglinski.
00:09:50Actually, that'll be next week's Holy Mass is offered for Marianne.
00:09:54Today's Holy Mass is offered for all of you.
00:09:58I'm getting the dates confused.
00:09:59Everything's running together.
00:10:01So remember, next week, Palm Sunday, Holy Mass,
00:10:04the offering will be for Marianne Vanglinski,
00:10:07which is near the first anniversary of her passing.
00:10:11With that, let us now rise and begin our worship with song.
00:10:27To Thee we come, O Lord our God,
00:10:34Before Thine altar, Father,
00:10:39Thou knowest best of yearning hearts,
00:10:44This supplication, answer.
00:10:50Lift up from want Thy people, Lord.
00:10:55Bless us, O God.
00:10:58O Father, bless our toil.
00:11:03We ask Thee not for bliss in life,
00:11:08Nor golden treasures splendor,
00:11:13But that we enter in the strife,
00:11:19Christ's kingdom to engender.
00:11:25Lift up from sin Thy people, Lord,
00:11:30And strengthen us, O Father, bless our toil.
00:11:36Under Thy cross we stand prepared
00:11:42To serve Thee with devotion,
00:11:48Be it with sweat, of blood, or tears,
00:11:53Or humble resignation.
00:11:59For we Thy people are, O Lord.
00:12:04Save us, O God.
00:12:07O Father, bless our toil.
00:12:13Again, good morning, my dear brothers and sisters,
00:12:16And welcome on this Passion Sunday.
00:12:18As we enter into this Passion Tide,
00:12:22As we begin today's Holy Mass
00:12:24With our Lenten penitential service,
00:12:27So that freeing ourselves from sin
00:12:30By the mercy of our Lord and Savior,
00:12:32We may enter this very sacred time
00:12:35Prepared to walk with Him.
00:12:37In the name of the Father,
00:12:39And of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
00:12:42Lord, we cry out to You
00:12:44In the midst of the darkness of our world,
00:12:47Shine through the darkness,
00:12:49And grant us strength from within.
00:12:52Lord, we call to You
00:12:53From the depths of our sin,
00:12:56We know that You are our light
00:12:58And our salvation,
00:13:00Therefore we will not fear,
00:13:01But we will worship You
00:13:03In the spirit of love.
00:13:05The Lord be with you.
00:13:07And also with you.
00:13:08Let us pray.
00:13:11God, by sin You are offended,
00:13:13And by penance appeased.
00:13:16Lord, now look upon Your faithful people
00:13:20With mercy,
00:13:21For they now turn to You
00:13:22With sorrow for sin,
00:13:24And with the joy of hope,
00:13:26We ask this through Your Son,
00:13:28Jesus Christ, our Lord,
00:13:30Forever and ever.
00:13:32To Him who has loved us
00:13:36And washed us from our sins
00:13:38In His own blood
00:13:39And made us to be a kingdom
00:13:41And priest to God,
00:13:43His Father,
00:13:44To Him belongs all glory and dominion
00:13:47Forever and ever.
00:13:48Amen.
00:13:50Happy is the one
00:13:51Whose sins are forgiven,
00:13:53Whose transgressions are pardoned.
00:14:00When I did not confess my sins,
00:14:02I was worn out all day long.
00:14:04I came right to my own to You,
00:14:07My strength was completely drained,
00:14:09As you should be the right of us,
00:14:11I was not alone.
00:14:12Then I confessed my sins to You,
00:14:15And I did not conceal my wrongdoings.
00:14:23So all Your loyal people
00:14:25Should pray to You
00:14:26In times of need.
00:14:27When a great flood comes rushing in,
00:14:30It will not reach them.
00:14:40The Lord says,
00:14:41I will teach you the way you should go.
00:14:43I will instruct you and advise you.
00:14:45The wicked will have to suffer,
00:14:55But those who trust in the Lord
00:14:57Are protected by His constant love.
00:15:00Let us pray.
00:15:08That God will indeed make us a holy people
00:15:12Through the passion and death of His Son,
00:15:15Jesus Christ, our Savior.
00:15:18Amen.
00:15:19To Him who has loved us
00:15:21And washed us from our sins
00:15:23In His own blood
00:15:24And made us to be a kingdom of priests
00:15:27To God His Father.
00:15:28To Him belongs all glory and dominion
00:15:31Forever and ever.
00:15:32Amen.
00:15:34Please kneel for the sacrament of penance.
00:15:37May the Lord be in your heart
00:15:38And on your lips
00:15:39That you may worthily confess your sins
00:15:41In the name of the Father
00:15:43And of the Son
00:15:43And of the Holy Spirit.
00:15:45Amen.
00:15:46Let us pray together.
00:15:48O merciful God,
00:15:50I thank you that you did prevail upon me
00:15:52To remit and amend my life.
00:15:55Assist me, O God,
00:15:56In the performance of this important task,
00:15:59That my confession
00:16:00May truly be the means
00:16:02Of cleansing myself of sin
00:16:04And the beginning of a new spiritual life.
00:16:07Before you I desire to make a confession
00:16:10Of all my sins
00:16:11But I realize I'm unable to do this of myself.
00:16:15Therefore I invoke your divine help.
00:16:18O Holy Spirit,
00:16:19Enlighten my mind with heavenly light
00:16:22That I may perceive all my sins.
00:16:24Refresh my memory
00:16:25That I may recall all my transgressions.
00:16:29Kindle my heart with true contrition
00:16:31That I may sorrow sincerely over my sins
00:16:34And confess them with deep humility
00:16:36Before my God,
00:16:38My confessor,
00:16:40And my church.
00:16:42For the healing of all our sins.
00:16:45Amen.
00:16:46If we have dishonored God's holy name
00:16:50By using it in anger and carelessness
00:16:53For his healing.
00:16:55Amen.
00:16:57If we have not trusted in God
00:16:59And despaired of his love
00:17:01For his healing.
00:17:03Amen.
00:17:04If we have not shown our love
00:17:07And thanks to him
00:17:08By worshiping him faithfully
00:17:10For his healing.
00:17:12Amen.
00:17:14If we have sinned against our brothers and sisters
00:17:16For their forgiveness and his healing.
00:17:20Amen.
00:17:21If we have been thoughtless and careless
00:17:24Toward the needs of our neighbors,
00:17:26Especially those who are closest to us
00:17:29For his healing.
00:17:30Amen.
00:17:32If we have led others to evil thoughts and deeds
00:17:35For his healing.
00:17:37Amen.
00:17:39If we have been uncommitted to spread peace,
00:17:42Joy, and justice,
00:17:44Especially among the poor
00:17:45And those who are suffering
00:17:47For his healing.
00:17:49Amen.
00:17:50If we have failed to feed Christ in the hungry,
00:17:54Clothe him in the naked,
00:17:55Visit him in prison and the sick room
00:17:58For his healing.
00:17:59Amen.
00:18:00Amen.
00:18:01If we have complained against authority and law
00:18:04Because they seem to block the way of our selfish end
00:18:07And have not seen in them the way to the common good
00:18:11For his healing.
00:18:12Amen.
00:18:14Amen.
00:18:15If we have been guilty of any harmful excesses
00:18:17Of any kind for his healing.
00:18:21If we have failed in our obligations to our parents,
00:18:36Especially in their old age,
00:18:37For his healing.
00:18:43Let's take a silent moment to recall any other sinfulness
00:18:47that may have occurred in our lives
00:18:50and confess those sins before God.
00:19:21O eternal God, listener in the hidden depths of our despairs,
00:19:26whose steadfast love will not let you stay on a heavenly throne,
00:19:31but insists on your rummaging with us through our disasters,
00:19:35quicken our hearts that we may perceive the possibilities
00:19:39of a better relationship with you,
00:19:41because in the presence of Christ,
00:19:43our spirits have been opened to accept forgiveness.
00:19:47Amen.
00:19:49Let's together pray the confitier.
00:19:52I confess to the Lord God Almighty,
00:19:55one in the blessed Trinity,
00:19:57who by the Holy Spirit permeates the universe,
00:20:01but above all the soul of man.
00:20:03I confess before him and his holy church
00:20:06all the sins that I have committed in thought, word, and deed.
00:20:10I confess that by my sins I have severed the ties uniting me with my Creator.
00:20:16I have disobeyed his holy laws.
00:20:19I have wandered from the paths of righteousness
00:20:22and have thus brought injury to myself and my neighbor.
00:20:26By my fault, by my fault, by my own great fault,
00:20:30moved to the depths of my soul.
00:20:33Because of the many fences, I am hardly sorry.
00:20:37I firmly resolve to amend my life.
00:20:40And with your help, O God,
00:20:41I earnestly desire to follow the road of life
00:20:44shown me by Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
00:20:49Forgive me, O merciful God.
00:20:51Pardon me my sins.
00:20:57For an act of penance.
00:20:59In this week ahead, let us redouble our efforts at prayer at home.
00:21:06Before we go to bed each night, let us pray in our Father,
00:21:12seeking that in this sacred time,
00:21:16that we may walk more closely with Jesus
00:21:18through his passion and arrive at Easter refreshed, alive, and made new.
00:21:25So for each evening, before you go to bed,
00:21:28offer up an Our Father.
00:21:32Please now strike your breasts three times,
00:21:34saying, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
00:21:37May Almighty God be merciful unto you,
00:21:40grant you remission of your sins,
00:21:41and lead you unto life everlasting.
00:21:44Amen.
00:21:44May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon,
00:21:47absolution, and remission of your sins.
00:21:50Amen.
00:21:51And may our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you.
00:21:53With his authority vested in me,
00:21:55I absolve you from all your sins.
00:21:57In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
00:21:59and of the Holy Spirit.
00:22:01Amen.
00:22:02May the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ,
00:22:05the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
00:22:07and all the saints,
00:22:08show you the way to eternal life.
00:22:11Remember this sacred moment of your life.
00:22:13Go in peace, and sin no more.
00:22:28Let's now rise for the opening,
00:22:30for the Kalec opening prayer.
00:22:35The Lord be with you.
00:22:38And may our Lord be with you.
00:22:42Let us pray.
00:22:45Heavenly Father,
00:22:47your Son has made the grave holy,
00:22:49and a place of hope for your people.
00:22:53May we who die in him also rise in him.
00:22:56We ask this to the same Jesus Christ,
00:22:59who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit,
00:23:03one God, forever and ever.
00:23:10Let's now be seated and attentive to the Lord's word.
00:23:15Amen.
00:23:18Amen.
00:23:18Amen.
00:23:18Amen.
00:23:19Amen.
00:23:21Amen.
00:23:40A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel.
00:23:45Thus said the Lord God,
00:23:48O my people,
00:23:49I will open up your graves,
00:23:52and have you rise from them,
00:23:54and bring you back to the land of Israel.
00:23:57Then you shall know that I am the Lord.
00:24:01When I open your graves,
00:24:03and have you rise from them,
00:24:06O my people,
00:24:07I will put my spirit in you,
00:24:10that you may live,
00:24:12and I will settle you upon your land.
00:24:16Thus you shall know that I am the Lord.
00:24:20I have promised,
00:24:22and I will do it,
00:24:24says the Lord.
00:24:25The word of the Lord.
00:24:27Thanks be to God.
00:24:30Our response to our psalm today is,
00:24:32With the Lord there is mercy,
00:24:35and fullness of redemption.
00:24:38With the Lord there is mercy,
00:24:40and fullness of redemption.
00:24:44Out of the depths I cry to you,
00:24:46O Lord.
00:24:47Lord,
00:24:48hear my voice,
00:24:50and let your ears be attentive,
00:24:53to my voice in supplication.
00:24:56With the Lord there is mercy,
00:24:59and fullness of redemption.
00:25:01If you, O Lord,
00:25:03mark inequities,
00:25:04Lord,
00:25:05who can stand?
00:25:07But with you is forgiveness,
00:25:09that you may be revered.
00:25:13With the Lord,
00:25:18I trust in the Lord,
00:25:20my soul trusts in his word.
00:25:23More than sentinels,
00:25:25wait for the dawn.
00:25:27Let Israel,
00:25:28wait for the Lord.
00:25:30With the Lord,
00:25:31there is mercy,
00:25:33and fullness of redemption.
00:25:36For with the Lord is kindness,
00:25:39and with him is plenteous redemption.
00:25:42And he will redeem Israel
00:25:44from all their inequities.
00:25:48With the Lord,
00:25:49there is mercy,
00:25:51and fullness of redemption.
00:25:57a reading from the letter of St. Paul
00:25:59to the Romans.
00:26:01Brothers and sisters,
00:26:03those who are in the flesh
00:26:06cannot please God,
00:26:08but you are not in the flesh.
00:26:11On the contrary,
00:26:13you are in the spirit.
00:26:14If only the spirit of God
00:26:17dwells in you,
00:26:19whoever does not have
00:26:20the spirit of Christ
00:26:22does not belong to him.
00:26:25But if Christ is in you,
00:26:28although the body is dead
00:26:30because of sin,
00:26:32the spirit is alive
00:26:34because of righteousness.
00:26:36If the spirit of the one
00:26:38who raised Jesus from the dead
00:26:41dwells in you,
00:26:43the one who raised Christ
00:26:45from the dead
00:26:46will give you life
00:26:48to your mortal bodies.
00:26:50Also,
00:26:52through his spirit
00:26:54dwelling in you.
00:26:56The word of the Lord.
00:26:58Thanks be to God.
00:27:21Please rise for the trap.
00:27:26If then,
00:27:28we have died with Christ
00:27:29we believe
00:27:30that we shall also
00:27:31live with him.
00:27:33We know that Christ
00:27:34who raised from the dead
00:27:36dies no more
00:27:37that no longer
00:27:39has a tower over him.
00:27:42The Lord,
00:27:43give your heart
00:27:43and will lift
00:27:44the Lord
00:27:44in the Holy Gospel
00:27:45of Jesus.
00:27:46Praise the Lord.
00:27:47Amen.
00:27:52The Lord be with you.
00:27:54Amen.
00:27:56Amen.
00:27:58Amen.
00:27:59from the Holy Gospel
00:28:00according to St. John.
00:28:02Glory be to you, O Lord.
00:28:04Now a man was ill,
00:28:07Lazarus from Bethany,
00:28:08the village of Mary
00:28:10and her sister Martha.
00:28:12Mary was the one
00:28:13who had anointed the Lord
00:28:14with perfumed oil
00:28:16and dried his feet
00:28:17with her hair.
00:28:18It was her brother Lazarus
00:28:21who was ill.
00:28:22So the sisters
00:28:23sent word to Jesus
00:28:25saying,
00:28:26Master,
00:28:26the one you love
00:28:27is ill.
00:28:28When Jesus heard this
00:28:29he said,
00:28:30This illness
00:28:31is not to end
00:28:32in death
00:28:33but it is for
00:28:34the glory of God
00:28:35that the Son of God
00:28:36may be glorified
00:28:37through it.
00:28:38Now Jesus loved
00:28:40Martha and her sister
00:28:41and Lazarus
00:28:42so when he heard
00:28:43that he was ill
00:28:44he remained
00:28:45for two days
00:28:45in the place
00:28:46where he was.
00:28:48Then after this
00:28:49he said to his disciples,
00:28:50Let us go back
00:28:52to Judea.
00:28:55The disciples
00:28:56said to him,
00:28:58Rabbi,
00:28:58the Jews
00:28:59were just trying
00:28:59to stone you
00:29:00and you want
00:29:01to go back there?
00:29:02Jesus answered,
00:29:04Are there not
00:29:05twelve hours
00:29:06in a day?
00:29:06If one walks
00:29:08during the day
00:29:08he does not stumble
00:29:10because he sees
00:29:11the light
00:29:12of this world
00:29:12but if one walks
00:29:14at night
00:29:14he stumbles
00:29:15because the light
00:29:16is not in him.
00:29:18He said this
00:29:19and then told them,
00:29:21Our friend Lazarus
00:29:22is asleep
00:29:22but I am going
00:29:24to awaken him.
00:29:25So the disciples
00:29:26said to him,
00:29:28Master,
00:29:28if he is asleep
00:29:29he will be saved.
00:29:30But Jesus
00:29:31was talking
00:29:32about his death
00:29:33while they thought
00:29:34he meant
00:29:35ordinary sleep.
00:29:37So then Jesus
00:29:38said to them,
00:29:39Clearly,
00:29:40Lazarus
00:29:41has died
00:29:42and I am glad
00:29:43for you
00:29:43that I was not there
00:29:45that you may believe.
00:29:46Let us go to him.
00:29:48So Thomas
00:29:49called Didymus
00:29:50said to his fellow
00:29:51disciples,
00:29:52Let us also go
00:29:53to die with him.
00:29:55When Jesus arrived
00:29:57he found that
00:29:58Lazarus
00:29:58had already been
00:29:59in the tomb
00:30:00for four days.
00:30:01Now Bethany
00:30:02was near Jerusalem
00:30:04only about
00:30:05two miles away
00:30:06and many of the Jews
00:30:07had come to Martha
00:30:08and Mary
00:30:09to comfort them
00:30:10about their brother.
00:30:12When Martha
00:30:12heard that Jesus
00:30:13was coming
00:30:14she went
00:30:15to meet him
00:30:16but Mary
00:30:17sat at home.
00:30:18Martha said
00:30:19to Jesus,
00:30:21Lord,
00:30:22if you had been here
00:30:23my brother
00:30:24would not have died
00:30:25but even now
00:30:26I know
00:30:27that whatever
00:30:27you ask of God
00:30:29God will give you.
00:30:31Jesus said to her
00:30:32your brother
00:30:33will rise.
00:30:34Martha said
00:30:35to him
00:30:35I know
00:30:36he will rise
00:30:37in the resurrection
00:30:38on the last day.
00:30:40Jesus told her
00:30:41I am
00:30:42the resurrection
00:30:43and the life
00:30:44whoever believes
00:30:45in me
00:30:45even if he dies
00:30:46will live
00:30:47and everyone
00:30:48who lives
00:30:48and believes
00:30:49in me
00:30:49will never die.
00:30:51Do you
00:30:52believe this?
00:30:53She said to him
00:30:54yes Lord
00:30:55I have come
00:30:56to believe
00:30:56that you are
00:30:57the Christ
00:30:58the Son of God
00:30:59the one
00:31:00who is coming
00:31:00into the world.
00:31:02When she had said this
00:31:03she went
00:31:04and called her sister
00:31:05Mary secretly
00:31:06saying
00:31:08the teacher
00:31:09is here
00:31:09and is asking
00:31:10for you
00:31:11as soon as
00:31:12she heard this
00:31:13she rose quickly
00:31:14and went to him
00:31:15for Jesus
00:31:16had not yet come
00:31:17into the village
00:31:18but was still
00:31:19where Martha
00:31:20had met him
00:31:20so when the Jews
00:31:22who were with her
00:31:22in the house
00:31:23comforting her
00:31:24saw Mary
00:31:25get up quickly
00:31:26to go out
00:31:27they followed her
00:31:28presuming that
00:31:29she was going
00:31:30to the tomb
00:31:30to weep there
00:31:34when Mary
00:31:35came
00:31:36to where
00:31:37Jesus was
00:31:38and saw him
00:31:43she fell
00:31:44at his feet
00:31:44and said to him
00:31:45Lord
00:31:46if you had been here
00:31:47my brother
00:31:48would not have died
00:31:49when Jesus
00:31:51saw her weeping
00:31:52and the Jews
00:31:53who had come
00:31:54with her weeping
00:31:55he became perturbed
00:31:57and deeply troubled
00:31:58and said
00:31:59where have you
00:32:00laid him
00:32:01they said to him
00:32:03sir
00:32:03come and see
00:32:04and Jesus
00:32:06wept
00:32:14so the Jews
00:32:15said
00:32:16see how he
00:32:17loved him
00:32:17but some of them
00:32:18said
00:32:19could not the one
00:32:20who opened the eyes
00:32:21of the blind man
00:32:22have done something
00:32:23so that this man
00:32:24would not have died
00:32:25so Jesus
00:32:27perturbed again
00:32:28came to the tomb
00:32:29it was a cave
00:32:31with a stone
00:32:32lay across it
00:32:33Jesus said
00:32:34take away
00:32:35the stone
00:32:36Martha
00:32:37the dead man's
00:32:38sister
00:32:38said to him
00:32:39Lord
00:32:40by now
00:32:40there will be
00:32:41a stench
00:32:42for he has
00:32:42been dead
00:32:43for four days
00:32:44Jesus said
00:32:45to her
00:32:46did I not
00:32:47tell you
00:32:47that if you
00:32:48believe
00:32:48you will see
00:32:49the glory
00:32:50of God
00:32:50so they took
00:32:52away the stone
00:32:52and Jesus
00:32:53raised his eyes
00:32:54and said
00:32:55Father
00:32:57I thank you
00:32:59for hearing me
00:32:59I know
00:33:00that you
00:33:01always hear me
00:33:03but because
00:33:04of the crowd
00:33:05here
00:33:05I have said
00:33:06this
00:33:06that they
00:33:07may believe
00:33:07that you
00:33:08sent me
00:33:11and when
00:33:12he had said
00:33:12this
00:33:13he cried
00:33:13out in a
00:33:14loud voice
00:33:16Lazarus
00:33:17come out
00:33:18the dead man
00:33:19came out
00:33:20tied hand
00:33:21and foot
00:33:21with burial
00:33:22cloths
00:33:23and his face
00:33:24was wrapped
00:33:24in a cloth
00:33:25so Jesus
00:33:26said to them
00:33:27untie him
00:33:28and let him
00:33:29go
00:33:29now many
00:33:30of the Jews
00:33:31who had come
00:33:31to Mary
00:33:32hadn't seen
00:33:33what he had
00:33:34done
00:33:34began to
00:33:35believe in him
00:33:36this is
00:33:37the gospel
00:33:38of the Lord
00:33:40praise be to you
00:33:42O Lord
00:33:42Jesus Christ
00:33:43Lord
00:34:44And fill me now.
00:34:52Come, Holy Spirit, and bring our hearts to thy faith with the fire of thy love.
00:35:08Amen.
00:35:09And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe.
00:35:15Let us go to him.
00:35:17In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:35:20Amen.
00:35:21Our central theme for this Lenten journey, and now this journey through Passion Tide,
00:35:28is a reflection and teaching on sacrifice and our covenantal relationship with our Heavenly Father.
00:35:37We explore the fact that sacrifice is covenantal.
00:35:42In our sacrifice, we enhance our pre-existing relationship with God.
00:35:49We accept our agreement with God's plan and way for us, his rule.
00:35:55We find joy in that.
00:35:57We reinforce our acceptance of his will for us.
00:36:03We tear away at the things in our lives that block our way to our Heavenly Father,
00:36:11and we enter into a deeper union with God.
00:36:15For me, this Gospel reading is extremely emotional.
00:36:22In it is conveyed so much of the feeling that occurred that day in Bethany.
00:36:31We feel every emotion.
00:36:34We know what those people were going through.
00:36:38Martha, Mary, Jesus, the Apostles.
00:36:43And the crowd that was around.
00:36:47We feel the disciples' confusion.
00:36:53Jesus, hanging back in Galilee, wants to re-enter Judea to go to Bethany.
00:37:02They feel trepidation.
00:37:05They don't want to go back there,
00:37:07because going back to Judea with Jesus was dangerous.
00:37:12Jesus was an outlaw.
00:37:16Thomas, finding out that Lazarus had died,
00:37:19states that they should go with Jesus to die as well.
00:37:24He was throwing up his hands in an extreme symbol of frustration.
00:37:31Let's just go, is what Thomas was saying.
00:37:37We feel the meeting with Martha and her statement of faith.
00:37:44We recall that Martha was the one who stayed back in the kitchen.
00:37:50Remember, Martha was the one who was concerned with much serving
00:37:54and the tasks of taking care of guests.
00:38:01Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him.
00:38:07Martha's faith now causes her to be the one to run out and meet Jesus first.
00:38:14This time, Mary is the one who stays behind.
00:38:18She's back at home.
00:38:20She is summoned, and then she, too, runs out to meet Jesus.
00:38:26She repeats the exact same phrase that Martha used,
00:38:31Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
00:38:36They were confused.
00:38:39They were astonished at the fact that Jesus was not there
00:38:44to heal their brother before he died.
00:38:50All are weeping.
00:38:54Jesus utters a loud cry of despair.
00:38:59The Greek term for the cry of despair that Jesus made
00:39:05was like that of a bridled horse or a mule,
00:39:10a loud and deep groan, an anguished cry of sadness.
00:39:16And Jesus wept.
00:39:22This is the utter sadness of God.
00:39:29God.
00:39:31God who is angry and sad at the state of death in the world.
00:39:39Jesus goes to the tomb,
00:39:42hearing the criticism of some, of course,
00:39:46and the confusion of others, of course.
00:39:49The tomb is open,
00:39:52and he calls Lazarus to life.
00:39:56In our focus on sacrifice and covenant
00:40:00over this Lenten and now Passion Tide period,
00:40:04we are called to sacrifice our doubt.
00:40:09That's why Jesus raised Lazarus to show his ultimate power over death.
00:40:17We are called not just to see Jesus as someone who's going to show up
00:40:22and heal someone from sickness,
00:40:26putting off death,
00:40:28but as the one who overcame death for all of us,
00:40:35for Lazarus and each and every one of us.
00:40:38He overcame death.
00:40:40death.
00:40:43This is his covenant promise.
00:40:47It is the promise of resurrection,
00:40:49and it is the promise of life eternal.
00:40:54In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:40:56Amen.
00:41:15Let us now rise and together profess our faith.
00:41:19I believe in one God,
00:41:22the Father, the Almighty,
00:41:24maker of heaven and earth,
00:41:25of all that is seen and unseen.
00:41:28I believe in one Lord,
00:41:30Jesus Christ,
00:41:31the only Son of God,
00:41:33eternally begotten of the Father,
00:41:35God from God,
00:41:36light from light,
00:41:38true God from true God,

00:50:32Please kneel.
00:50:38We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power.
00:50:41Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love.
00:50:44You have formed us in your own image,
00:50:47giving the whole world into our care,
00:50:49so that in obedience to you, our Creator,
00:50:51we might rule and serve all your creatures.
00:50:54When our disobedience took us far from you,
00:50:57you did not abandon us to the power of death.
00:51:00In your mercy, you came to our help.
00:51:02Since seeking you, we might find you.
00:51:05Again and again, you called us into covenant with you,
00:51:08and through the prophets,
00:51:10you taught us to hope for salvation.
00:51:12Gracious God, you love the world so much
00:51:15that in the fullness of time,
00:51:16you sent your only Son to be our Savior.
00:51:19Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
00:51:23he lived as one of us, yet without sin.
00:51:26To the poor, he proclaimed the good news of salvation.
00:51:29To prisoners, freedom.
00:51:31To the sorrowful, joy.
00:51:33To fulfill your purpose, he gave himself up to death,
00:51:37and rising from the grave, destroyed death,
00:51:39and made the whole creation new.
00:51:42And that we may live no longer for ourselves,
00:51:44but for him who died and rose for us,
00:51:47he sent the Holy Spirit,
00:51:49his own first gift for those who believe,
00:51:51to complete his work in the world,
00:51:53and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.
00:51:56When the hour had come for him to be glorified,
00:52:00having loved his own who were in the world,
00:52:02he loved them to the end.
00:52:06At supper with them, he took bread,
00:52:10and when he had given thanks to you,
00:52:12he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said,
00:52:17Take this, all of you, and eat it,
00:52:19for this is my body,
00:52:21which is given for you.
00:52:39After supper, he took the cup of wine,
00:52:42and when he had given thanks,
00:52:44he gave it to them and said,
00:52:46Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
00:52:49for this is the cup of my blood,
00:52:52the blood of the new and everlasting covenant,
00:52:55which shall be shed for you and for many
00:52:57for the forgiveness of sins.
00:52:59As often as you do this,
00:53:01do it in remembrance of me.
00:53:18We now celebrate the memorial of our redemption,
00:53:22recalling Christ's death and descent among the dead,

01:08:33We ask this through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit,
01:08:40one God, forever and ever.

01:09:34Jesus, stamp your wounds upon us. Mark the hearts of faithful Christians. May the deep pain of your death lessen
01:09:52the pain of my death.
