00:01:01Lord Jesus, you carried our sins in your own body on the cross so that we might have life.
00:01:08May we and all who remember this day find new life in you now and in the world to come,
00:01:15where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
00:01:19Amen.
00:01:24Please be seated for the hearing of God's word.
00:01:37Our first reading today is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
00:01:43See, my servant shall prosper.
00:01:45He shall be raised high and greatly exalted.
00:01:48Even as many were amazed at him, so marred was his look beyond human semblance, his appearance
00:01:55beyond that of the sons of man.
00:01:57So shall he startle many nations.
00:02:00Because of him, kings shall stand speechless.
00:02:03For those who have not been told shall see, and those who have not heard shall ponder it.
00:02:09Who would believe what we have heard?
00:02:11To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
00:02:14He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth.
00:02:19There was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract
00:02:25us to him.
00:02:27He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one
00:02:33of those from whom people hide their faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem.
00:02:39Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought
00:02:45of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted.
00:02:49But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins.
00:02:53Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole.
00:02:56By his stripes we were healed.
00:02:59We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way.
00:03:03But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.
00:03:07Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth, like a lamb led to
00:03:13the slaughter, or a sheep before the shears, he was silent and opened not his mouth.
00:03:19Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away, and who would have thought any more of his
00:03:24destiny?
00:03:25When he was cut off from the land of the living and smitten for the sin of his people, a
00:03:31grave
00:03:31was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no
00:03:37wrong nor spoken any falsehood.
00:03:39But the Lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity.
00:03:44If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life,
00:03:50and the will of the Lord shall be accomplished through him.
00:03:53Because of his affliction, he shall see the light in fullness of days.
00:03:58Through his suffering my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear.
00:04:03Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall devoid the spoils.
00:04:09with the mighty, because he surrendered himself to death, and was counted among the wicked.
00:04:15And he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses.
00:04:20This is the word of the Lord.
00:04:22Thanks be to God.
00:04:24Our responsorial psalm.
00:04:26Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:04:30Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:04:33In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
00:04:36Let me never be put to shame.
00:04:38In your justice, rescue me.
00:04:40Into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:04:42You will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God.
00:04:46Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:04:49For all my foes, I am an object of reproach, a laughingstock to my neighbors, and a dread
00:04:56to my friends.
00:04:57They who see me abroad, flee from me.
00:05:00I am forgotten like the unremembered dead.
00:05:03I am like a dish that is broken.
00:05:06Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:05:09But my trust is in you, O Lord.
00:05:12I say, you are my God.
00:05:14Into your hands is my destiny.
00:05:16Rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors.
00:05:21Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:05:25Let your face shine upon your servant.
00:05:28Save me in your kindness.
00:05:30Take courage and be stout-hearted, all you who hope in the Lord.
00:05:34Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
00:05:38Our epistle is taken from the letter to the Hebrews.
00:05:42Brothers and sisters,
00:05:43Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God,
00:05:50let us hold fast to our confession.
00:05:52For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
00:05:58but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
00:06:03So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.
00:06:10In the days when Christ was in the flesh,
00:06:13he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from
00:06:20death.
00:06:20And he was heard because of his reverence.
00:06:23Son, though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered.
00:06:28And when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
00:06:34This is the word of the Lord.
00:06:36Thanks be to God.
00:06:38Please rise.
00:06:41Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
00:06:45Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name.
00:07:03The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John
00:07:08Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley to where there was a garden into which he and
00:07:14his disciples entered.
00:07:16Judas, his betrayer, also knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
00:07:23So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with
00:07:29lanterns, torches, and weapons.
00:07:31Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them,
00:07:37whom are you looking for?
00:07:39They answered him, Jesus, the Nazarene.
00:07:42He said to them, I am.
00:07:45Judas, his betrayer, was also with them.
00:07:47When he said to them, I am, they turned away and fell to the ground.
00:07:52So he again asked them, whom are you looking for?
00:07:57They said, Jesus, the Nazarene.
00:07:59Jesus answered, I told you that, I am.
00:08:03So if you are looking for me, let these men go.
00:08:06This was to fulfill what he had said.
00:08:09I have not lost any of those you gave me.
00:08:12Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear.
00:08:18The slave's name was Malchus.
00:08:20Jesus said to Peter, put your sword into its scabbard.
00:08:25Shall I not drink the cup that the father gave me?
00:08:28So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guard seized Jesus, bound him, and brought him to Annas
00:08:35first.
00:08:36He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
00:08:40It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the
00:08:48people.
00:08:48Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus.
00:08:52Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with
00:08:57Jesus.
00:08:58But Peter stood at the gate outside.
00:09:01So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter
00:09:08in.
00:09:08Then the maid, who was with the gatekeeper, said to Peter,
00:09:12You are not one of this man's disciples, are you?
00:09:16He said, I am not.
00:09:18Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made because it was cold
00:09:24and were warming themselves.
00:09:26Peter was also standing there keeping warm.
00:09:29The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.
00:09:35Jesus answered him,
00:09:36I have spoken publicly to the world.
00:09:39I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather,
00:09:44and in secret I have said nothing.
00:09:47Why ask me?
00:09:48Ask those who heard me what I said to them.
00:09:51They know what I said.
00:09:53When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said,
00:09:57Is this the way you answer the high priest?
00:10:01Jesus answered him,
00:10:02If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong.
00:10:05But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?
00:10:09Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
00:10:13Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm,
00:10:16and they said to him,
00:10:18You are not one of his disciples, are you?
00:10:21He denied it and said,
00:10:22I am not.
00:10:23One of the slaves of the high priest,
00:10:25a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off,
00:10:29said,
00:10:29Didn't I see you in the garden with him?
00:10:32Again Peter denied it,
00:10:33and immediately the cock crowed.
00:10:36Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium.
00:10:40It was morning,
00:10:41and they themselves did not enter the praetorium
00:10:43in order not to be defiled,
00:10:47so that they could eat the Passover.
00:10:49So Pilate came out and said to them,
00:10:52What charge do you bring against this man?
00:10:54They answered and said to him,
00:10:57If he were not a criminal,
00:10:58we would not have handed him over to you.
00:11:01At this Pilate said to them,
00:11:03Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.
00:11:06The Jews answered him,
00:11:08We do not have the right to execute anyone,
00:11:11in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled,
00:11:14that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.
00:11:18So Pilate went back into the praetorium
00:11:20and summoned Jesus and said to him,
00:11:22Are you the king of the Jews?
00:11:25Jesus answered,
00:11:26Do you say this on your own,
00:11:28or have others told you about me?
00:11:30Pilate answered,
00:11:31I am not a Jew, am I?
00:11:33Your own nation and chief priests
00:11:35handed you over to me.
00:11:37What have you done?
00:11:39Jesus answered,
00:11:40My kingdom does not belong to this world.
00:11:42If my kingdom did belong to this world,
00:11:45my attendants would be fighting
00:11:47to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
00:11:50But as it is,
00:11:51my kingdom is not here.
00:11:53So Pilate said to him,
00:11:54Then you are a king.
00:11:55Jesus answered,
00:11:57You say I am a king.
00:11:58For this I was born,
00:12:00and for this I came into the world
00:12:02to testify to the truth.
00:12:04Everyone who belongs to the truth
00:12:06listens to my voice.
00:12:08Pilate said to him,
00:12:09What is truth?
00:12:11Then, when he had said this,
00:12:13he again went out to the Jews
00:12:14and said to them,
00:12:16I find no guilt in him,
00:12:17but you have a custom
00:12:18that I release one prisoner
00:12:20to you at Passover.
00:12:21Do you want me to release to you
00:12:23the king of the Jews?
00:12:25They cried out again,
00:12:27Not this one, but Barabbas.
00:12:29Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
00:12:32Then Pilate took Jesus
00:12:33and had him scourge.
00:12:34And the soldiers wove a crown
00:12:36out of thorns
00:12:37and placed it on his head
00:12:38and clothed him in a purple cloak.
00:12:41And they came to him and said,
00:12:42Hail, king of the Jews.
00:12:44And they struck him repeatedly.
00:12:47Once more Pilate went out
00:12:49and said to them,
00:12:50Look, I am bringing him out to you
00:12:52so that you may know
00:12:53that I find no guilt in him.
00:12:55So Jesus came out
00:12:57wearing a crown of thorns
00:12:58and the purple cloak.
00:13:00And he said to them,
00:13:01Behold the man.
00:13:04When the chief priests
00:13:05and the guards saw him,
00:13:06they cried out,
00:13:08Crucify him, crucify him.
00:13:10Pilate said to them,
00:13:11Take him yourselves
00:13:12and crucify him.
00:13:14I find no guilt in him.
00:13:16The Jews answered,
00:13:17We have a law.
00:13:19And according to that law,
00:13:20he ought to die
00:13:21because he made himself
00:13:23the son of God.
00:13:25Now when Pilate heard this statement,
00:13:27he became even more afraid
00:13:29and went back into the praetorium
00:13:31and said to Jesus,
00:13:32Where are you from?
00:13:33Jesus did not answer him.
00:13:35So Pilate said to him,
00:13:37Do you not speak to me?
00:13:38Do you not know
00:13:39that I have power to release you
00:13:41and I have power to crucify you?
00:13:43Jesus answered him,
00:13:45You would have no power over me
00:13:47if it had not been given to you
00:13:49from above.
00:13:49For this reason,
00:13:51the one who handed me over to you
00:13:52has the greater sin.
00:13:55Consequently, Pilate tried to release him,
00:13:57but the Jews cried out,
00:13:59If you release him,
00:14:00you are not a friend of Caesar.
00:14:02Everyone who makes himself a king
00:14:04opposes Caesar.
00:14:05When Pilate heard these words,
00:14:07he brought Jesus out
00:14:09and seated him on the judge's bench
00:14:11in the place called Stone Pavement
00:14:14in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
00:14:16It was the preparation day for Passover.
00:14:19It was about noon.
00:14:20And he said to the Jews,
00:14:22Behold your king.
00:14:23They cried out,
00:14:25Take him away,
00:14:26take him away,
00:14:27crucify him.
00:14:28Pilate said to them,
00:14:30Shall I crucify your king?
00:14:31The chief priest answered,
00:14:34We have no king but Caesar.
00:14:36Then he handed him over to them
00:14:38to be crucified.
00:14:39So they took Jesus
00:14:41and carrying the cross himself,
00:14:42he went out to what is called
00:14:44the place of the skull
00:14:45in Hebrew, Golgotha.
00:14:47There they crucified him
00:14:49and with him two others,
00:14:51one on either side,
00:14:52with Jesus in the middle.
00:14:54Pilate also had an inscription
00:14:56written and put on the cross.
00:14:58It read,
00:14:59Jesus the Nazarene,
00:15:01the king of the Jews.
00:15:02Now, many of the Jews
00:15:04read this inscription
00:15:05because the place
00:15:06where Jesus was crucified
00:15:08was near the city
00:15:09and it was written in Hebrew,
00:15:11Latin, and Greek.
00:15:13So the chief priest of the Jews
00:15:15said to Pilate,
00:15:16Do not write the king of the Jews,
00:15:18but that he said,
00:15:20I am the king of the Jews.
00:15:21Pilate answered,
00:15:23What I have written,
00:15:24I have written.
00:15:25When the soldiers
00:15:26had crucified Jesus,
00:15:28they took his clothes
00:15:29and divided them
00:15:30into four shares,
00:15:32a share for each soldier.
00:15:33They also took his tunic,
00:15:35but the tunic was seamless,
00:15:37woven in one piece
00:15:38from top down.
00:15:39So they said to one another,
00:15:41Let's not tear it,
00:15:43but cast lots for it
00:15:44to see whose it will be,
00:15:46in order that the passage
00:15:47of scripture
00:15:48might be fulfilled
00:15:49that says,
00:15:50They divided my garments
00:15:51among them,
00:15:52and for my vesture
00:15:53they cast lots.
00:15:55This is what the soldiers did.
00:15:57Standing by the cross of Jesus
00:15:59were his mother
00:16:00and his mother's sister,
00:16:02Mary,
00:16:02the wife of Clopas,
00:16:03and Mary of Magdala.
00:16:05When Jesus saw his mother
00:16:07and the disciple there
00:16:08whom he loved,
00:16:09he said to his mother,
00:16:11Woman, behold your son.
00:16:12Then he said to the disciple,
00:16:15Behold your mother.
00:16:16And from that hour
00:16:17the disciple took her
00:16:18into his home.
00:16:21After this,
00:16:22aware that everything
00:16:23was now finished,
00:16:24in order that the scripture
00:16:26might be fulfilled,
00:16:27Jesus said,
00:16:28I thirst.
00:16:29There was a vessel
00:16:30filled with common wine,
00:16:32so they put a sponge
00:16:33soaked in wine
00:16:34on a sprig of hyssop
00:16:35and put it to his mouth.
00:16:37When Jesus had taken the wine,
00:16:39he said,
00:16:40It is finished.
00:16:41And bowing his head,
00:16:43he handed over the spirit.
00:16:45Amen.
00:17:00Now since it was
00:17:01preparation day,
00:17:02in order that the bodies
00:17:04might not remain
00:17:05on the cross
00:17:05on the Sabbath,
00:17:07for the Sabbath day
00:17:08of that week
00:17:08was a solemn one,
00:17:10the Jews asked Pilate
00:17:11that their legs be broken
00:17:12and that they be taken down.
00:17:14So the soldiers came
00:17:16and broke the legs
00:17:17of the first
00:17:18and then of the other one
00:17:19who was crucified
00:17:20with Jesus.
00:17:21But when they came to Jesus
00:17:23and saw that he was already dead,
00:17:25they did not break his legs.
00:17:27But one soldier
00:17:28thrust his lance
00:17:29into his side
00:17:30and immediately
00:17:31blood and water
00:17:32flowed out.
00:17:33An eyewitness
00:17:34has testified
00:17:35and his testimony
00:17:36is true.
00:17:37He knows that he
00:17:38is speaking the truth
00:17:40so that you also
00:17:41may come to believe.
00:17:43For this happens
00:17:44so that the scripture
00:17:45passage might be fulfilled.
00:17:47Not a bone of it
00:17:48will be broken.
00:17:49And again
00:17:50another passage says
00:17:51they will look upon him
00:17:53whom they have pierced.
00:17:55After this,
00:17:56Joseph of Arimathea,
00:17:57secretly a disciple
00:17:59of Jesus
00:17:59for fear of the Jews,
00:18:01asked Pilate
00:18:02if he could remove
00:18:03the body of Jesus
00:18:04and Pilate permitted it.
00:18:06So he came
00:18:07and took the body.
00:18:08Nicodemus,
00:18:09the one who had first
00:18:10come to him at night,
00:18:11also came
00:18:12bringing a mixture
00:18:13of myrrh and aloes
00:18:14weighing about
00:18:15100 pounds.
00:18:16They took the body
00:18:18of Jesus
00:18:18and bound it
00:18:19with burial cloths
00:18:20along with the spices
00:18:22according to the
00:18:23Jewish burial custom.
00:18:25Now in the place
00:18:26where he had been
00:18:26crucified,
00:18:27there was a garden.
00:18:30And in that garden,
00:18:31a new tomb
00:18:32in which no one
00:18:33had yet been buried.
00:18:35So they laid Jesus
00:18:36there because of
00:18:37the Jewish preparation
00:18:38day for the tomb
00:18:40was close by.
00:18:41This is the gospel
00:18:43of the Lord.
00:18:46Glory to you,
00:18:47O Lord Jesus Christ.
00:18:49Please be seated
00:18:49for a moment.
00:18:55There was a vessel there
00:18:57filled with common wine,
00:18:58so they put a sponge
00:19:00soaked in wine
00:19:01on a sprig of hyssop
00:19:02and put it to his mouth.
00:19:04When Jesus had taken
00:19:05the wine,
00:19:06he said,
00:19:06It is finished.
00:19:08In the name of the Father
00:19:09and of the Son
00:19:09and of the Holy Spirit.
00:19:11Amen.
00:19:11And my dear brothers
00:19:13and sisters,
00:19:14as we recall
00:19:15on Holy Thursday,
00:19:17we commemorated
00:19:18the institution
00:19:19of the priesthood,
00:19:20the sacrament of penance,
00:19:22as well as
00:19:23the Holy Eucharist.
00:19:25We know that,
00:19:26as we read
00:19:27in Palm Sunday's
00:19:29Passion narrative,
00:19:31that Jesus told
00:19:32his apostles
00:19:33at the Last Supper
00:19:34that he would not
00:19:35drink the fruit
00:19:37of the vine again
00:19:38until he drank it anew
00:19:40in the kingdom of heaven,
00:19:42in the kingdom of God.
00:19:43Here on the cross,
00:19:45in a moment
00:19:46before he was to die,
00:19:48he again tasted
00:19:50that wine,
00:19:51and in that
00:19:52he ushered in
00:19:53the kingdom of God,
00:19:55the kingdom
00:19:55in which we are all members
00:19:57because of this
00:19:59very act,

00:55:17Onan, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
00:55:23And at three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
00:55:28Eloi, Eloi, Lema Sabachthani, which is translated,
00:55:32My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
00:55:36Deliver me, Lord, from the wicked. Preserve me from the violent.
00:55:40To those who plan to do with their hearts,
00:55:43who stir up the conflicts every day,
00:55:46who sharpen their tongues like serpents,
00:55:48venom of asps upon their lips. Salah.
00:55:52Keep me, Lord, from the conscience of the wicked.
00:55:55Preserve me from the violent.
00:55:57The arrogant have set a trap for me.
00:56:01Villains have spread a nut,
00:56:03laid snares for me by the wayside. Salah.
00:56:07I say to the Lord, you are my God.
00:56:10Listen, Lord, to the words of my prayer.
00:56:13My revered Lord, my strong Helper,
00:56:16my helmet on the day of battle.
00:56:19Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked.
00:56:22Do not let them of us see the law.
00:56:26Around me they raise their proud heads.
00:56:29May the mischief they threaten overwhelm them.
00:56:32May God bring burning foes upon them.
00:56:35As such as Israel's grave, never more to rise.
00:56:39Slanders will not survive on earth.
00:56:41Evil will quickly entrap the violent.
00:56:44For I know the Lord's, your justice to the need,
00:56:47their rights to the poor.
00:56:49Then the just will give thanks to your name.
00:56:52Yet for I will welcome your presence.
00:56:55And at three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
00:56:59Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani,
00:57:02which is translated,
00:57:04My God, my God,
00:57:06why have you forsaken me?
00:57:13When Jesus had taken the wine,
00:57:15he said,
00:57:16It is finished.
00:57:17And bowing his head,
00:57:18he handed over the spirit.
00:57:20My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.
00:57:24My spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
00:57:27for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
00:57:29From this day, all generations will call me blessed.
00:57:34The Almighty has done great things for me,
00:57:37and the holy is his name.
00:57:39He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
00:57:43He has shown the strength of the God.
00:57:45He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
00:57:48He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
00:57:51and has lifted up the lowly.
00:57:52He has killed the hungry with good things,
00:57:55and the rich he has sent away great.
00:57:58He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
00:58:01for he has remembered his promise of mercy.
00:58:04The promise to me to our fathers,
00:58:07to the aid of him,
00:58:08and to the children of our earth.
00:58:10When Jesus had taken the wine,
00:58:12he said,
00:58:13It is finished.
00:58:14And bowing his head,
00:58:15he handed over the spirit.
00:58:20Christ humbled himself,
00:58:22becoming obedient to death,
00:58:24even death on a cross.
00:58:25Have mercy on me, God,
00:58:28in your goodness,
00:58:29in your abundant compassion,
00:58:30blot out my offense.
00:58:32Watch away from my guilt,
00:58:34from my sin and plenty.
00:58:36For I know my offense,
00:58:38my sin is always before me.
00:58:40And as you alone have my sin,
00:58:43I have done such evil with yourself.
00:58:46That you are just in your sentence,
00:58:48blameless when you condemn.
00:58:50True, I have born guilty,
00:58:53a sinner,
00:58:54even as I know it is teaching me.
00:58:56Still you insist on sincerity of heart,
00:58:59in my inmost being,
00:59:00teach me wisdom.
00:59:02Let me lift up the night,
00:59:04the cure,
00:59:05for washing me,
00:59:06and making me whiter than snow.
00:59:10Let me hear sounds of joy and gladness.
00:59:13Let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
00:59:16Turn away the grace of my sins,
00:59:19blot out all my guilt.
00:59:21A clean heart create for me, God,
00:59:23renew in me a steadfast spirit.
00:59:26Do not guide me from your presence,
00:59:28from a taking of you in your Holy Spirit.
00:59:31Restore my joy in your salvation,
00:59:33sustain in me a willing spirit.
00:59:36I will teach the wicked your ways,
00:59:38that sinners may return to you.
00:59:41Rescue me from death, God,
00:59:43my saving God,
00:59:44that my tongue may praise your healing power.
00:59:47Lord, open my lips,
00:59:49my mouth will open your grace.
00:59:52For you do not desire sacrifice,
00:59:54a burnt offering you would not accept.
00:59:57Do not sacrifice, God,
00:59:59as a broken spirit.
01:00:00God, do not stir in the broken and humble the heart.
01:00:04Christ humbled himself,
01:00:06becoming obedient to death,
01:00:08even death on a cross.

01:02:13Lord Jesus, Lamb of God,
01:02:16you died on the cross because of your love for us.
01:02:20In completing this great sacrifice,
01:02:22you accepted the will of your eternal Father
01:02:24by commending your spirit into his hands
01:02:28and then bowing your head and dying.
01:02:30Have mercy on us and forgive our sins
01:02:33for which we are truly sorry.
01:02:35Through the merits of your most sacred suffering
01:02:38and bitter death,
01:02:39revive in our souls an unwavering faith
01:02:42so that we may enjoy everlasting glory with you,
01:02:45Jesus Christ,
01:02:46who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
01:02:49one God forever and ever.
01:02:52Amen.
01:02:54The Lord be with you.
01:02:55And also with you.
01:02:57A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
01:03:00Glory be to you, O Lord.
01:03:02The centurion who witnessed what had happened
01:03:05glorified God and said,
01:03:07this man was innocent beyond doubt.
01:03:10When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle
01:03:13saw what had happened,
01:03:14they returned home beating their breasts.
01:03:17But his acquaintances stood at a distance,
01:03:19including the women who had followed him from Galilee
01:03:22and saw these events.
01:03:24Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph,
01:03:27who though he was a member of the council,
01:03:30had not consented to their plan of action.
01:03:33He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea
01:03:35and was awaiting the kingdom of God.
01:03:38He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
01:03:41After he had taken the body down,
01:03:43he wrapped it in a linen cloth
01:03:45and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb
01:03:47in which no one had yet been buried.
01:03:49It was the day of preparation,
01:03:52and the Sabbath was about to begin.
01:03:54The women who had come from Galilee with him
01:03:57followed behind,
01:03:58and when they had seen the tomb
01:04:00and the way in which the body was laid in it,
01:04:02they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils.
01:04:05Then they rested on the Sabbath
01:04:08according to the commandment.
01:04:10This is the Gospel of the Lord.
01:04:12Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
01:04:15Let's pray.
