00:00I don't know.
00:48Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
00:52Lord, for us your wounds were suffered.
00:54O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
01:26O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
01:29Forty days and forty nights, you were fasting in the wild.
01:38Forty days and forty nights, tempted and yet undefiled.
01:47Shall not we your sorrow share, and from worldly joys abstain?
01:58Fasting with unceasing prayers, strong with you to suffer pain.
02:07Keep, O keep us, save your dear, ever constant by your side.
02:17That with you we may appear at the eternal Eastertide.
02:32Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
02:36Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
02:41Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
02:49And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
02:54Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
02:57Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
03:02Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
03:07You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
03:13You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
03:19You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
03:25The first word.
03:27Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
03:32Take it from Luke chapter 28, verse 24.
03:35The last temptation of Christ prompts his first word from the cross.
03:42Satan tempted him to abandon his mission at the beginning of his ministry.
03:47Now at the end of his ministry, new tempters urge Jesus to look out for his own welfare.
03:53They say, save yourself.
03:56They misuse his titles to batter his self-esteem.
04:00The priests sarcastically refer to his messiahship.
04:03Soldiers mock his alleged kingship.
04:07The unbelieving crowd scorns his presumed divinity.
04:11The real messiah could take care of himself.
04:14Christ's first word reveals what he really considered to be his last temptation.
04:20Faced with the cynics in front of him,
04:23Jesus would experience the impulse to withhold forgiveness.
04:27It's not easy to forgive people who have written us off.
04:31Jesus must resist the spontaneous resentment caused by his accusers.
04:37Neither his divinity nor his masterful humanity immunized him from temptations.
04:44He felt tormentors.
04:46He came to forgive the sins of all people.
04:49He must gather his whole inner forces to forgive these particular people in this real situation at the cross.
04:58That he did so was his final victory over his last temptation.
05:04Forgiveness flowed from Jesus' cross on Good Friday, as it has ever since.
05:14This forgiveness included compassion even of those who affronted him.
05:20Forgiving Jesus, heal my heart of all anger.
05:25Enable me to forgive those who have hurt me and written me off.
05:29By your grace, make my forgiving power greater than any injury that may come my way.
05:37Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
05:41Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
05:46Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
05:50as we forgive those who trespass against us.
05:54And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
05:58Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
06:02Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
06:07Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
06:13You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
06:18You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
06:24You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
06:31People, my people, how have I betrayed you?
06:40How have I grieved you?
06:44How could I have failed you?
06:49For I had saved you from the might of Pharaoh.
06:58So you delivered me to the cross to suffer.
07:06For I had saved you from the might of Pharaoh.
07:16So you delivered me to the cross to suffer.
07:27The second word.
07:29Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
07:34Christ, taken from Luke chapter 23, verse 43.
07:40Christ's second word celebrates a conversion.
07:43He just offered forgiveness to the priest, soldiers, and bystanders.
07:48Now he talks to the two thieves.
07:51One curses and abuses him.
07:53The other defends him.
07:55Tradition names the good thief, Dismas.
07:58How did Jesus convert him?
08:00We have no record that Jesus conversed with him before the crucifixion.
08:06Nothing is said about Christ offering Dismas a last-minute explanation of the gospel.
08:12Dismas had no more than a few hours to get to know Jesus.
08:17Dismas would have been scourged at the pillar, possibly just before or after Jesus.
08:22He would have seen the soldiers mocking Jesus and crowning him with thorns.
08:28He would have made the way of the cross with Jesus in the march to Calvary.
08:34In short, Dismas was converted by Christ's witness more than by his words.
08:40It has been written, people listen to witnesses more than teachers.
08:45If they listen to a teacher, it is because that teacher is already a witness.
08:50Both thieves experienced Christ's powerful witness.
08:55Only one was converted.
08:57Why?
08:58Though conversion is always a grace, there are conditions which make its acceptance more favorable.
09:05The first condition is hunger for God, which Dismas showed.
09:10Secondly, there needs to be a facilitating event.
09:13Death is that for Dismas.
09:15Lastly, one needs a facilitating person.
09:18Jesus is that person for Dismas.
09:22Jesus, help me to preach what I practice.
09:26Make me a Christian witness so that when I share my faith,
09:30my actions will also speak of my faith in you as well.
09:36Make me a loving, just, and merciful.
09:40Then I can speak of you with boldness and love.
09:45Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
09:49Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
09:53Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
10:02And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
10:06Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
10:10Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
10:14Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
10:20You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
10:26You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
10:32You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
10:39People, my people, how have I betrayed you?
10:47How have I grieved you?
10:52How could I have failed you?
10:57Through deserts I led you to the land of promise.
11:05Now you have given me o'er to Pilate's jaundice.
11:14Through deserts I led you to the land of promise.
11:23Now you have given me o'er to Pilate's jaundice.
11:33The third word, woman, behold your son, son, behold your mother, take from John chapter 19, verses 26 and 27.
11:47Dying people hold on to life until they take care of unfinished business.
11:52So with Jesus, who makes sure someone will take care of his mother.
12:08Tradition says that John took care of Mary and brought her with him when he went to live in Ephesus.
12:15There is a two-room stone house shrine called the home of Mary on the mountain overlooking Ephesus.
12:24Thus Mary would have practiced her motherhood of the church in two striking ways.
12:30While she centered her life on prayer, John was writing the words of the fourth gospel.
12:36As she continued to be the woman of the deepest faith in the church, St. Paul was evangelizing Ephesus over
12:44a two-year period.
12:45It seems fair enough to say that her contemplative prayer influenced the deep spiritual quality of the fourth gospel.
12:54With little exaggeration, one can infer that Mary was a guiding star of faith for St. Paul in his preaching
13:01of the gospel to the Ephesians.
13:03Ephesus contains the oldest known church.
13:07To have been named in honor of our blessed mother, the site of the council of Ephesus in 431, the
13:16walls and pavement of the church of Mary have been restored.
13:19The fathers of the council alluded to the tradition that Mary lived at Ephesus, and they declared Mary was indeed
13:27the mother of God.
13:28Thus Christ's third word generated a dynamic role for his mother, whose faith and prayer mothers the church.
13:40Jesus, devoted son, you thought of your mother's heart before you died.
13:45You also cared enough for the church that you gave us Mary as our mother.
13:51Her faith touched the apostles and disciples.
13:54Because of her, we are nearer to you.
13:58Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
14:02Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
14:06Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
14:14And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
14:19Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
14:22Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
14:26Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
14:32You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
14:38You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
14:44You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
14:50You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
15:20You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
15:50Take it from Matthew, chapter 27, verse 46.
15:56This cry from the cross lets us know that Jesus wanted to feel the presence of God.
16:02He faces the mystery of personal pain and imminent death.
16:07His throat is as dry as baked clay.
16:10His manhood ebbs away like water.
16:12He watches the soldiers divide his garments and gamble for his seamless robe.
16:18He feels alone.
16:20Despite the presence of his mother and friends, he feels the isolation of a dying person.
16:26Even a sense of the presence of God has departed from him.
16:30Like every person on a deathbed, Jesus struggles with the darkness and shouts a why.
16:38At Gethsemane, his body tried to pull him away from death.
16:42Self-preservation warred with his idealism.
16:46At Calvary, the psychological suffering of loneliness forced him to dig deeper than ever
16:52into his commitment to the goal of salvation.
16:55At least an angel came to Gethsemane to comfort him.
16:59No angel comes now.
17:02He who would offer love for the world feels absolutely no love.
17:10Only the purest trust and obedience to his father will count at this hour.
17:16He does not even have the dignity of privacy.
17:19He cannot contain his inner drama by closing his eyes and fighting it out in silence.
17:25It causes him to let out a cry that startles every listener and draws us all into the story
17:32of his struggle.
17:33He will not be the noble, tight-lipped silence of a Stoic.
17:38He will yell out his pain and love's absence
17:48and beg for the presence of God.
17:52Abandoned Lord, you had the most public deathbed in history.
17:57Let every dying person know that you also have felt the loss of love.
18:01You drew from it the trust and obedience that move us all to hope.
18:08Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
18:12Thy kingdom come.
18:13Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
18:17Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
18:23against us.
18:24And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
18:29Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
18:32Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
18:37Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
18:43You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
18:49You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
18:54You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
19:01People, my people, how have I betrayed you?
19:09How have I grieved you?
19:14How could I have failed you?
19:18Sweet water from the rock I gave for salvation, but you have filled my cup with humiliation.
19:34Humiliation, sweet water from the rock I gave for salvation, but you have filled my cup with humiliation.
19:54The fifth word, I thirst, John chapter 19, verse 28.
20:00At the moment of his feeling the most unloved, Jesus solves the dilemma by imploring of every person,
20:09let me love you.
20:10He dispels the gloom of loneliness by affirming his mission of love to love others.
20:17The best way to overcome his experience of abandonment is to touch others in their isolation and offer them love.
20:25His physical thirst provides the image.
20:28The crowning with thorns, the scourging, and the nailing caused blood loss and dehydration.
20:35Carrying the cross through the hot streets produced abundant sweat and further decline in body moisture.
20:42The ensuing thirst is maddening.
20:45Lawrence of Arabia knew how destructive such a thirst was.
20:49Thirst was an act of malady, a fear and a panic that tore at the brain
20:54and reduced the bravest man to a bumbling maniac in an hour or two.
20:59Then the sun killed him.
21:01Jesus turned his physical thirst into a plea to open hearts.
21:05He is not interested in the soldier's wine that would relieve his dry mouth.
21:10He wants to minister to the dried up hearts of people
21:13and fill them with the living waters of his affection.
21:17He does not want medicine for his body.
21:20He wants to administer the medicine of mercy to others.
21:24He has made it clear that he likes to be loved.
21:27That was the point of his cry of abandonment.
21:30He is far more consumed with the drive to love others.
21:34He will not force his way into another's affections.
21:38He asks, he invites himself in, let me love you.
21:43He who created the human heart now asks permission to enter it.
21:49Jesus, your thirst to bring me love honors my independence.
21:55You want me to receive your love but will not compel me.
21:59I open my heart to you.
22:01We love you.
22:05Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
22:09Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
22:13Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses
22:17as we forgive those who trespass against us.
22:21And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
22:26Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
22:29Blessed art thou amongst women.
22:31And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
22:34Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
22:40You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
22:46You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
22:52You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
22:57People, my people, how have I betrayed you?
23:07How have I grieved you?
23:12How could I have failed you?
23:16For you I split the sea, dried the flooding water.
23:24Now with a soldier's spear, you have worked my slaughter.
23:33For you I split the sea, dried the flooding water.
23:42Now with a soldier's spear, you have worked my slaughter.
23:52The sixth word.
23:54It is finished.
23:55John chapter 19, verse 30.
23:59Jesus speaks as a priest in this sixth word.
24:03He uses a liturgical formula that signals the end of a sacrifice.
24:08His passion and death unified five forms of biblical sacrifice into one act of saving worship.
24:16The holocaust consumed a victim and transformed it into a pleasing offering to God.
24:23Christ's body is consumed, but his real holocaust is the total surrender of his person to God.
24:31In the atonement sacrifice, a goat symbolically carried away the sins of the people into the desert.
24:38Christ's atonement created the church where people are reconciled to themselves, others, and God.
24:45A third type was the libation or wine pouring.
24:50The liquid was poured into the earth as a symbolic toast of gratitude to God for favors received.
24:58Jesus's wine was the human blood life that poured out of him that we might have divine life.
25:05The fourth type is the bread offering.
25:09Twelve loaves of bread placed in the temple each week to praise God for his life-sustaining power.
25:16Jesus becomes the bread that is broken so that we may have life here and life eternal hereafter.
25:23Finally, the Passover celebrates the divine liberation of God's people.
25:28Jesus turned the meal into a Eucharistic celebration, which marks divine liberation from sin and oppression.
25:37At 3 p.m. on Good Friday, the priest at the temple sacrificed the last Passover lamb and said,
25:49It is finished.
25:50At Calvary, Jesus transformed into God's lamb.
25:55Peacefully says, It is finished.
25:59Love can do no more.
26:01Love need do no more.
26:04I adore you, my Lord.
26:06Love you.
26:09And praise you.
26:10I sing your beauty and rest in your presence.
26:15Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
26:18Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
26:23Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
26:27as we forgive those who trespass against us.
26:31And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
26:35Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
26:38Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
26:43Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
26:48You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
26:54You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
26:59You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
27:09People, my people, how have I betrayed you?
27:18How have I grieved you?
27:22How could I have failed you?
27:27Because I raised you up over every nation,
27:35Now you would have me bear shame and crucifixion.
28:02The seventh word, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
28:14This seventh word of Jesus is a devotional night prayer.
28:21Taught in biblical times to children,
28:24Jesus uses the words that Mary and Joseph put on his lips for his farewell from the cross.
28:31It is a prayer that gathers up his whole person and peacefully places him in God's arms.
28:38The mood of acceptance permeates his last word.
28:42After his death, certain prodigies occur.
28:46One is the tearing of the veil of the temple.
28:48That seems to relate to the soldier's tearing of his side with a lance.
28:53Ripping away the veil from the temple where God resided in deep mystery
28:58is a way of saying, through the death of Jesus, God is revealed to everyone.
29:04Opening the veil of Christ's body allows the water of baptism in the blood of the Eucharist to flow to
29:11us.
29:12Church fathers love to view this event as an image of the church being born from the side of Christ
29:19in baptism.
29:22And the Eucharist, they conclude also that the parting of the veil of flesh
29:28occasioned the parting of the temple veil and the revelation of God's presence for the whole world.
29:35Joseph of Arimathea provided the grave and Nicodemus gave the burial spices.
29:41A provincial carol captures the mood.
29:48In the grave they laid him, love by hatred slain, thinking that he would never wake again.
29:56Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen, love has come again like wheat arising green.
30:06Jesus, you are like the seed of bread under the snow.
30:11You will be wheat arising green.
30:15Lently I await our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
30:21Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
30:26Give us this day.
30:28And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
30:34And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
30:39Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
30:42Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
30:47Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
30:55You who suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
31:01You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
31:07You who have suffered wounds for us, O Christ Jesus, have mercy on us.
31:12When I survey the wondrous cross
31:20On which the Prince of Glory died
31:27My richest gain I count but loss
31:35And pour contempt on all my pride
31:42Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
31:50Save in the death of Christ my God
31:57All the vain things that charm me most
32:04I sacrifice them to his blood
32:11See, were the whole realm of nature mine
32:20There were a present far too small
32:26Love so amazing, so divine
32:35Demands my soul, my life, my all
32:41Thank you
32:42Thank you
32:51Thank you
32:52Thank you
32:52Thank you
32:53Thank you
