00:00The voice of the dubs is live on the scene inside the Intuit Dome, so he's coming to us live
00:06actually inside the spot where this will all originate.
00:11River Island's guest line, Tim Roy. Tim, good evening. How you doing?
00:16Doing great. Actually, just sitting courtside here watching a couple guys warm up and getting ready to climb up to
00:22the perch.
00:23I could climb up to the perch and get ready for this one.
00:27Okay, love it. By the way, who's warming up so far?
00:31Right now, I'm looking down at Pat Spencer and Will Richard are warming up right at this moment.
00:36Oh, okay. Okay, so I don't mean to say this disparagingly at all, but are we potentially looking at a
00:45couple of people who won't play tonight, Tim?
00:48How far do you think the bench goes in this one?
00:51I think in any situation where it's a win or go home, I think the bench shortens.
00:56Historically, Steve has liked to play a lot of bodies, so I wouldn't be surprised if both of those guys
01:01get in.
01:02But they may not, depending on the circumstances and how close this game gets, because you can't falter here.
01:10If not, you're flying home tomorrow and your season is over.
01:13So I think it will be a shorter rotation than normal. Usually that's the case.
01:18What's your biggest concern going in? Is it as simple as just the Kawhi Leonard factor, him being such a
01:25tough guy to cover?
01:27Yeah, that's part of it. And I think also, too, that they have a whole bunch of long athletic defenders
01:34who will get after you and deflect passes and try to overplay.
01:40Overplay, I think, you know, for the Warriors tonight, I think back cuts are going to be really important on
01:44that because they are going to be overplayed.
01:46They're going to try to deny everybody. And so, yeah, but Kawhi has always been, you know, the Warriors kryptonite
01:52historically.
01:53His 35-game regular season tally against Golden State is 25 wins and 10 losses, and that's right through the
02:00dynasty period.
02:01So he's always been a tough cover for, well, not just Golden State, for everybody.
02:05I mean, he's averaging 27 a night this year. So he's a tough cover for everybody.
02:09Tim Roy, the voice of the Dubs, with us here on Willard and Dibs as we get ready for the
02:14play-in game that's a little bit over, two hours away.
02:17Tim, you've been there for all of these four performances that Steph has had recently.
02:22What's been your assessment of where he's at physically, mentally, all of that?
02:29You know, I think physically, and I think he's getting really close to being, you know, the Steph Curry we
02:35know.
02:35I think it's always difficult when you come back in this kind of situation, because it's not just you.
02:42It's everybody else as well. It's timing with everybody else.
02:45And then they're also incorporating a relatively new player in Chris Stapp's Porzingis.
02:50So I think that's been part of it, is that their timing, I think, has been a little off.
02:54And I think that's been, you know, that's been part of it.
02:56But I would expect full, you know, Steph Curry, full blast tonight.
03:01When you talk about the Porzingis side of it, I know they haven't played together in games a lot.
03:06Do you know how much work on the side together in, you know, even two-on-two, three-on-three
03:11type stuff?
03:11How much of that work have they put in that might be able to help them tonight?
03:16I think what will help them in the fact that they have played a couple of games together.
03:19I don't think they've done a lot of two-on-two and three-on-three stuff.
03:23I could be wrong on that, but I don't think they have.
03:26I just think it's going to be really interesting to see, you know, how they work.
03:30And once the ball gets, you know, entered to Porzingis, if they're not doing pick-and-roll
03:35and they started with, you know, an entry pass, you know, how they work off him.
03:39Because he not only has the ability to score, but he can also pass.
03:44Because literally he can pass over the other team's, you know, players for the most part.
03:49And, you know, the other part about tonight that gives me, you know, some encouragement for the Warriors
03:53is the fact that there's no longer Evita Zubat here.
03:56He was a player you always had to counter with and deal with because he is great at establishing position,
04:03great at getting putbacks and offensive rebounds.
04:06And as good of a player as Brooke Lopez has been in his career, he's not that player right now.
04:12I mean, Tim, to that end, when was the last time you broadcasted a Warrior basketball game
04:19where they were the taller team?
04:23It's been a while.
04:24It's been a while.
04:25You know, I guess you'd have to go back to Eric Dampier maybe.
04:31I don't know.
04:32My goodness.
04:33No, they were actually, when you had the Kevin Durant to Bale McGee teams, you know,
04:39but when he was one of the centers there, they were a pretty tall group there.
04:43They had length and size.
04:46So, you know, when the Warriors were winning championships, they were a tall team,
04:50not necessarily seven foot tall, but they were tall across the board.
04:54So when you had Klay Thompson at guard and Andre Goddala at one forward,
04:58and then you had Draymond at center.
05:00So they've had, you know, groups where they've been a real tall team,
05:04just not necessarily coming at you with twin towers.
05:07Yeah, no, and although that said, even that was not that recently.
05:11That's going back a number of years.
05:14How do you see that aspect factoring into tonight's game,
05:19the Warriors' actual ability to have size down low?
05:23Well, I think if they can get some offensive rebounds tonight,
05:26that's going to make their life a lot easier,
05:29and I think it's going to get them second chance points,
05:32which will negate maybe some of that defense I talked about that the Clippers have
05:36with their length.
05:37So I think, you know, and maybe a guy that can really, you know,
05:41do that at a high level might be Gary Payton.
05:43You know, he's a guy that offensive rebounds extremely well for his size.
05:48And so if they can get some second chance stuff going tonight, you know,
05:52that would negate, A, a few misses from three,
05:55and also maybe some of the overplaying and the physical defense that I expect the
05:59Clippers to play tonight.
06:01And would you anticipate that when Draymond is out there on the court that he's
06:05going to be the one primarily guarding Kawhi?
06:07And the other piece is if Draymond's not out there and Kawhi is,
06:11who do you stick on him?
06:13You know, that's a really good question.
06:15I'm sure it's one that Steve Kerr will be asked before the game.
06:18But I think, you know, I think you'd have to put, you know, start Draymond.
06:21This is where tonight you really, you know, wish you had Moses Moody
06:26because you could put Moses on Kawhi for a while.
06:29And Moses, without those long arms and his size, could give him, you know,
06:33at least something to think about there on the defensive end.
06:37So, yeah, I think that's going to be an issue, I think, tonight.
06:40I think they're going to probably use multiple bodies and bring different players.
06:45You know, you could go anywhere from, you know, some of their wing players
06:49to maybe even putting a big on them, maybe, you know, at times,
06:52depending on where he's playing.

07:16And as we get to two hours before tip, we're talking with Tim Roy,
07:19the voice of the Warriors on the scene at the Intuit Dome.
07:22Clippers and Warriors playing game 9-10 seed coming up here in just a few.
07:28Tim, like, in your position, I know that this may sound silly,
07:32but this is kind of a conversation around the organization right now
07:37where people look at the larger picture and they think to themselves,
07:42oh, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if they ended up in the lottery.
07:47I wonder what your perspective is being around the organization
07:51on how the Warriors kind of muster up the intensity for a situation like this
07:58where there probably are some mixed feelings throughout the organization.
08:03Well, I don't know about that.
08:05I think if you're talking about anybody from the coaching staff and the players,
08:09they want to win this game.
08:11They're going to come in and put full board on this game.
08:14And if they lose, it's going to be a really quiet locker room afterwards.
08:17If they win, it's going to be a celebratory locker room.
08:21There's no talk of that that I've heard coming around.
08:24I think it's interesting to look at that from an outside perspective,
08:27and people certainly can do that.
08:29But I don't think even in situations, and we saw this coming down the stretch,
08:35even when you're playing teams that are quote-unquote not really trying to win,
08:39the players aren't doing that.
08:41The players won't win.
08:42They're going to go out and try to make a name for themselves.
08:44And I think tonight, I think the Warriors look at this as a redemptive game.
08:49They can say, hey, this is what we can do when we're reasonably healthy.
08:53And you can also look at what happened last night
08:55and maybe lick your chops a tiny bit knowing that Portland won't be in your way.
08:59I think Portland, a more difficult team.
09:01Mark was saying this earlier, that the Warriors and Phoenix,
09:04kind of a favorable matchup.
09:06But I know you don't want to look too far ahead,
09:08but did last night kind of give you a little bit of boost in the confidence
09:11that maybe they can get to OKC?
09:14Yeah, and I think nobody wants to play Portland right now.
09:19They're playing so well, and they've got so much length and young legs
09:25that they're a difficult matchup for everybody.
09:27And they have a rising star in Adia.
09:30That kid is something special.
09:32And that's going to be one of the best trades in trailblazer history
09:36when it goes down with it.
09:37But, yeah, I don't think anybody wants to play Portland.
09:40I think the Warriors probably feel a little more comfortable in Phoenix.
09:42I think they know what Phoenix can do.
09:44And, as you mentioned, they did struggle against Portland this year.
09:47But I was really impressed with the intensity of both games last night.
09:51I thought both games were fabulous.
09:53Yeah, hey, Tim, what is your perspective on the play-in tournament,
09:56just as a product?
09:59I think it's really good.
10:00I think it's kind of like what the wild card did for baseball,
10:03and I think it's what the wild cards are doing for football.
10:06It's more teams in the mix.
10:08More teams, more fan bases are excited about the chance to maybe go to the playoffs.
10:12And pull off a big upset.
10:14I have no problem with the play-in bracket whatsoever.
10:16And I think it did design what it was supposed to do up until this year.
10:22You know, in a normal year, the Warriors,
10:25with the losses and injuries they had coming down the stretch,
10:27they would have been fighting somebody for the 10 spot.
10:29And so those games would have been super, super important coming down the stretch.
10:33So, I have no problem with it whatsoever.
10:37The only caveat I would put into it, and if I was king for a day,
10:41is that if the No. 7 team had like a 10-game advantage over, you know,
10:48the No. 9 team or the 10 team, then the 7 would be automatically in.
10:52You know, that way it makes the regular season a little more, you know, meaningful.
10:56You know, I mean, the 7 team is clearly having a much better year than 9 or 10.
11:02And I think 7 should be automatically in.
11:04And the same with 8.
11:05If 8 is 10 games better than 9, then maybe, you know,
11:08there shouldn't be a play-in that year.
11:09I would put a qualifier.
11:11I like a little caveat, a little qualifier in there.
11:14Last year, 5 of the 8 play-in teams all had losing records.
11:18So, last year was a bit of an anomaly that way.
11:21Tim, I was running through the research just trying to put Steve Kerr's tenure
11:25in perspective, 12 years with one team.
11:29Only 7 coaches in the history of the association
11:31have had longer tenures consecutively with that one team.
11:36Do you think, does your gut tell you that he'll be back for a 13th?
11:40Yeah, I think he said that at the beginning of the year,
11:42he's going to decide at the end of the year.
11:44I think as long as he's, you know, still having fun
11:47and still enjoying the job, I think he'll come back.
11:49I think he was born to be a coach.
11:52And I think he's been one of the best at it in his tenure.
11:55And he's proven that over and over again.
11:57So, you know, I leave that stuff kind of, you know, until it happens.
12:02I've been around this too long to say, oh, I definitely think he's going to be back
12:06or definitely not going to be back.
12:07I kind of let it play out, if you will.
12:10But I think that, to me, is one of the keys.
12:12How does he feel about it?
12:14You still, you know, get up and he's fired up every day,
12:17just like everybody else.
12:18You're still fired up about the job.
12:19Let's go do the job.
12:21Tim Roy, voice of the dubs.
12:23We're going to let you save every other piece of that voice
12:26for the actual call, man.
12:28Thanks so much for coming on.
12:30Well, I know if I need a closer, I'll just call dibs.
12:33There you have it.
12:34It's actually a really good point.
12:35It's a really good point.
12:36I got some lumber connections, too, if you need them.
12:39You're a termination sensation.
12:41Cha-ching!
12:43Cha-ching!
12:44There it is.
12:45Night made, period.
12:47Walk off, mic drop.
12:49Tim Roy!
12:51I'll see you guys.
12:52All right, see you, buddy.
