What are the Lions best options when they draft 17th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft?
Transcript
00:00Baseball is back opening night live on Netflix tomorrow March 25th. It's Aaron Judge and the Yankees against Raphael Devers
00:08and the San Francisco Giants. That's Yankees Giants MLB opening night live on Netflix tomorrow 8 p.m. Eastern 5
00:16p.m. Pacific Tigers will get things going on Thursday out in San Diego. Can't wait as Padres can't wait
00:24to get this season up and running.
00:25It's it's the difference. The start of the offseason to the end of the offseason. You know the season ends
00:34disappointing 15 innings didn't get any further yet. There's renewed hope and optimism for this year because it feels like
00:42hey the Valdez things going to make them more formidable in a postseason series. There's a lot of excitement and
00:48this McGonagall buzz whether it's game one or game 15 or 16 that they're going to have a little more
00:54of
00:55of a jolt. The JV thing is more than nostalgia to like there's a there's a renewed energy around this
01:00baseball team. I mean at this time of the year right. Some teams they're going into it. It's all false
01:06hope. It's not that case for the for the Tigers. There is a lot of hope. It's the investment that
01:12we've wanted ownership to make in this team and all the way up until the Valdez signing. Well, they're not
01:17going to do anything. Not going to do anything. Bam. They do. And then it's JV follows that and then
01:22McGonagall in spring training. Now, I don't expect him to
01:25come in and bat 330 light the world on fire, but it's the glove in the field on the left
01:32side of the infield. It's the bat. It's adding to this lineup and maybe just maybe it's the bat. We
01:40wanted him to add in the offseason. Yeah, ideally he hits the ground running to that degree. It's asking a
01:47lot of a young player, but he's he's answered every single challenge along the way. I mean you take the
01:50sting out of blowing a 15 and a half game lead in the division and now you're the favorites this
01:54year for good reason.
01:55And people are legitimately bought in like the team bought in the fans are bought in and got the home
02:00opener a week from Friday. Well, there's always these landmarks, right? It's 25 games in it's it's like where are
02:05they at at that point? It's where are they at the all-star break? What's the conversation leading up to
02:11the trade deadline? Like is are they going to be buyers? They've already made this investment and then obviously the
02:16stretch run to get to the playoffs like there are landmarks along the way that have you really excited just
02:23to see what it is after that first one.
02:25And then set your sights on the next one. Also, if you're looking at the calendar, we are under a
02:31month from the NFL draft. The Super Bowl for Brad Holmes used to be the Super Bowl for Lions fans.
02:39Now we want the Super Bowl to be the Super Bowl. John, I have two questions and we'll get to
02:43you have a fear by the way. We'll do it 802. But before we get to that, just two quick
02:47questions. Does it have to be an offensive lineman at 17 and call your shot?
02:53Who's the guy they pick a month out? So no, it does not have to be an offensive lineman at
03:0417. How do I want to best phrase this? I think there needs to be an offensive lineman in the
03:16top 40.
03:20So you're saying if they don't take one at 17, they better be using picks to move up to secure
03:26a starting caliber tackle.
03:28So, okay, so I'm going to start there and then I'll give you who I think they take. I'm going
03:34to start there by saying which player there's there's there's kind of this this yin and yang, right?
03:41You've got to be able to take the best player available because they have two I think dramatic needs and
03:47that is pass rush opposite Aiden Hutchinson and it's offensive tackle at 17.
03:53If they pick there, which of those two positions can they can best serve the Detroit Lions this year?
04:02Are they going to get a better player at edge than they will get an offensive lineman or an offensive
04:08tackle at 17?
04:11Get the best one that you can get there.
04:15And again, I don't know, but then it has to be what are you going to do to fill that
04:20other spot?
04:21The guy that I think they take and it may be at 17 is Blake Miller.
04:27They're going to go full on substitute teacher and take Balakay.
04:33I think a year ago we wrote like an envelope of who we thought they were going to take and
04:37then revealed it the day of the draft.
04:39Blake Miller has been my guy.
04:41The guy that I want.
04:42I think the guy we all want is Monroe Freeland.
04:45You still know he'll be there.
04:46I don't I don't I can't say I know, but I could I think with 95% certainty he's not
04:53there at 17.
04:55So at 17 and you're looking to go.
04:58Well, that may be an overdraft to Blake Miller.
05:00Maybe he's supposed to go late first round.
05:02Well, how late?
05:04Well, and then what are we doing here?
05:05Because if you got a guy with a grade that you think is a starting caliber tackle,
05:10do you want to move back five or ten spots and roll the dice and cross your fingers?
05:14Yeah.
05:14No, if you've got a grade on him, that's first round grade.
05:17If you've got a grade on him that says this guy can start game one for us.
05:20He played over 50 games as a starter at Clemson played the right side.
05:23So we can play left and he's a guy I think will actually be there when they pick and fits
05:28Blake Miller's the name.
05:29I'll call my shot a month out and do it.
05:32Does it have to be a tackle unless there is extreme extenuating circumstances?
05:37Yeah, I think it should be a tackle.
05:39The extenuating circumstances would be a player falls from the heavens into your lap at 17 and then you've got
05:44to make the adjustment.
05:45Right.
05:45But it's our first, second, and third priority is a tackle here at 17.
05:50Yeah.
05:53If Monroe Freeling falls to you at 17 or if you somehow trade up and get him, then he's the
06:02guy that you could put at left and you keep Penny Sewell at right.
06:08I still would probably swap them, but which I know you'd be a big fan of.
06:12Thanks, John.
06:14But if you take Blake Miller, I think that more is a predetermined.
06:19You put Blake at right tackle and you move Penny Sewell over.
06:25Questions for you guys to answer.
06:26Call your shot.
06:27Text in a name.
06:28Who will the Lions pick?
06:30We are under a month until the NFL draft.
06:32And then we've spent a lot of time focused on the tackle position.
06:36John played it.
06:37They need one.
06:38There's a lot of names that people like in the first round.
06:40Does it have to be a tackle?
06:43Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
06:45And just so we understand, like guys who we think will go in the first round of the tackle position.
06:50Monroe Freeling is your guy.
06:52Yeah.
06:52I think Blake Miller will go in the first.
06:54It may be in the back half of the first, but I think he'll go in the first.
06:57Proctor, you're not a huge fan of because he may end up being a guard.
06:59John, I think he'll go in the first.
07:01Oh, yeah.
07:01I don't doubt that he'll go in the first.
07:03I just don't want him to go to the Lions in the first.
07:05Maui Noah.
07:06Francis Maui Noah, the tackle out of Miami.
07:08First rounder, right?
07:09Yeah.
07:10Am I missing somebody else?
07:11There's at least four, and I won't be surprised if there's five.
07:14I'm probably.
07:15Oh, no.
07:15The Utah guys.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Spencer for no is the one that'll probably go first out of those bunch.
07:21And I'd be good with Caleb Lamu.
07:23Is this?
07:24Is this name?
07:24The other tackle?
07:25Yeah.
07:25So, Caleb, this is a guy that more late first round, and if you get him at the top of
07:32the
07:32second round, okay.
07:34So, six tackles that could go in the first round.
07:36Yeah.
07:38I think the Lions should get one.
07:40I think they have to.
07:41Yeah.
07:42Because otherwise, it's Borum or a second rounder, and you better be sure you know what
07:46you're getting in the second round.
07:48Right.
07:48A little easier to plug in a guard in the second round, right, than a tackle.
07:51It's not like there's any good second round tackles.
07:53Well, you can get yourself a really good right tackle.
07:56I mean, right around, like, 37.
08:01If you could find a way to get to 37, you can get yourself a 10-year stalwart at tackle.
08:08I don't know.
08:09Guaranteed.
08:11John, there's a draft scenario that scares you.
08:13Talk about how this could go right for the Lions.
08:15There is a scenario that we saw pop up that would scare you.
08:18We'll do that to start the 8 o'clock hour.
08:20We are going to get back into some Red Wing talk later in the show.
08:23We know what's at stake tonight.
08:25And, John, on your way into work today, sticker shock.
08:28Oh, boy.
08:28835.
08:29It's 97.1.
