Omar Kelly joins the show to break down the Dolphins’ roster construction, focusing on the challenges of building leadership on a young and relatively cheap team. He explains why Zach Sieler is essentially untradeable due to his contract, while noting that players like Aaron Brewer, Jordyn Brooks, and even De’Von Achane could realistically be moved depending on how the offseason unfolds.

00:00All right, let's bring him on here on a Monday morning.
00:02Omar Kelly, Miami Herald, Dolphins columnist.
00:05And I want to apologize to your friend if you guys were listening
00:08with Perk the other day.
00:11That was all Perk and not me just for the record.
00:14But I did send an apology because I did not.
00:18She's a beautiful girl, and I didn't want to do anything to offend him.
00:22No, no.
00:24But that look was fantastic, bro.
00:26That look was great.
00:27Listen, the most beautiful thing about her is she doesn't have social media at all.
00:33That's great.
00:34Yeah, that's good stuff.
00:35All right.
00:36What is she, Tua?
00:38Social media?
00:40No social media.
00:41Okay.
00:42Hey, Omar, we need to leave Tua.
00:45All you people out there that were jumping on his.
00:48Man, let that man.
00:49Let that guy have a vacation.
00:51He got $200 million freaking dollars.
00:53Let him go out and do whatever he wants.
00:55You would do the same damn thing if you had that much money.
00:57I'd have been out there, too.
00:59My boat would have been big.
01:01It was his birthday celebration.
01:03That's not his boat.
01:04Like, I think that might have featured players or not.
01:07I know they were all in the Bahamas together, the players.
01:11Like, listen, Tua is living his life.
01:13He loves boats.
01:14He loves the water.
01:17Let that man spear fish for some lobster.
01:21Don't be a hater, Hollywood.
01:23Don't be a hater.
01:25Woody couldn't help himself.
01:27He brings that up last night.
01:28He goes, look at him, man.
01:30I don't care about that.
01:31That's like nothing to do.
01:32I did think it was weird that people were ripping him for taking a vacation.
01:36Like, he's living his life.
01:37It's his birthday.
01:39What do you want him to do?
01:40Yeah.
01:40What's he supposed to sit in his house and look out the window,
01:43see if it's okay to go out and play in the front yard with his kids?
01:45Hey, so we got to get into some of this stuff.
01:48I really like it.
01:49It's a great question.
01:51John Eric Sullivan, 11 days before the first round of this draft,
01:55what exactly are we going to make a move?
01:59I think the leaders left on this team, we need to leave alone.
02:01I don't think you can get fair value.
02:03I don't care what the deal is.
02:05I'm going to try like Hill to keep all those guys because Brooks,
02:09Brewer, and Seeler, and even A-Chan, the way he plays,
02:12I don't think his leadership is the way he plays as the best player on the team.
02:17I think you need that for these young guys if they're going to develop.
02:20Coaches cannot just – they can coach you up,
02:23but there's stuff that the veteran players can do that coaches just can't
02:27to help you get to where you need to get to.
02:30It's one thing to have a team full of youngsters,
02:33and Sullivan said they basically need young and cheap right now.
02:37This is a complete scorched earth rebirth of a team.
02:43The problem that I have is that you need leaders to show the way,
02:47to give the example.
02:49I don't think Zach Seeler is in the tradable category,
02:51and here's the reason why I say that.
02:53He just got a new contract.
02:55It is astronomically painful for you to trade him to another team
03:00and take on that dead cap hit.
03:02I'm just giving him a one-year contract.
03:04Now, the other three, A-Chan, Brewer, and Brooks,
03:09even though they've retouched two of those contracts,
03:12put in void years on it to be able to trade Waddle,
03:17those three are movable.
03:19They want new contracts.
03:21Teams are interested in them.
03:24Oh, I get that.
03:25Omar, there's no question that three of our best players
03:29and everybody watching what we're doing down here
03:31is not making phone calls to the GM.
03:33I'm with you 100%.
03:35If you don't think teams are offering third and fourth round picks
03:39for those players, you're insane.
03:42But, one, A-Chan is too valuable of a player.
03:46He's pretty much, you know what you're going to have to pay him.
03:50That's basically five years, $50 million, $30 million guaranteed.
03:54The question is, can you get a deal done?
03:55And if you don't get a deal done before the draft,
03:58are you going to need to move him and move him for what?
04:01Because, understand, A-Chan's leverage disappears
04:04once the draft is completed
04:06and other teams have their new, young, fresh back
04:09that they can inject hope into.
04:11So, that means he's going to, you know,
04:14have to wait on the Dolphins to decide
04:17if they want to compensate him.
04:18And more than likely, the Dolphins probably trying to drag this out
04:23and then basically play him on his fifth-year option
04:26and then play him on a franchise tag
04:28and that's $20 million
04:28and you figure out how it moves from there.
04:32A-Chan doesn't want that.
04:33A-Chan wants the $30 million in guaranteed money.
04:36And if you don't give it to him in the next two weeks,
04:40I'm pretty sure you'll have a disgruntled player on your hands.
04:43Now, when you're trying to build a culture
04:45and build an organization
04:47that, you know, people need people to follow,
04:50that's young, people need people to follow.
04:52And if A-Chan isn't somebody you want to follow around here,
04:55you're in trouble.
04:57Yeah, you're the best player.
04:58You're the best player on the team to that point.
05:01So, yeah, I just think we need a handful of those guys
05:06and look at whatever.
05:08They're not high-paying positions
05:10compared to other positions
05:11that put us in this crappy situation we're in
05:14with a wide receiver and a cover corner
05:16and a quarterback that didn't work out
05:19for different reasons or did work out
05:21but extended too long and too far out.
05:24But I just, I look at these guys, man,
05:27and, you know, Brewer's a very impressive guy.
05:29Brooks is a very impressive guy.
05:33But they're going to want to get paid.
05:34Not Seeler.
05:35Seeler's a separate deal.
05:36But those guys are going to want to get paid.
05:38And I just think you can't put a price tag
05:40on development of young guys
05:42for these guys to see them.
05:43And I don't want those guys disgruntled
05:46where every day we want to do an interview
05:48with Brewer and Brooks and A-Chan
05:53and all those young guys going,
05:55I wonder if he's going to be here or not.
05:56I wonder what's going to happen.
05:57They don't want to put up with that
05:59for their first camp.
06:00The team doesn't.
06:01So, I hope, how's this all in for you?
06:05What do you think happens?
06:06I know we don't really know how John Eric Sullivan,
06:08and I'm not saying give everybody money,
06:10but this is a good group.
06:11So, what happens here?
06:14I think you offer fair compensation
06:16for all the players.
06:18You try to get a deal done at good market value.
06:22I have, you know, Jordan Brooks.
06:25Everybody knows that the Cowboys conversation
06:27is out there.
06:28Sullivan said that there are multiple teams.
06:30I don't think you see anything get done
06:31until the day of the draft.
06:33But keep in mind,
06:34anybody who trades for Jordan Brooks
06:36or Aaron Brewer or Devon H.
06:38They're going to have to agree to a new contract
06:42for those players.
06:43That's how the business of the NFL works.
06:46These players,
06:47they don't want to go into their final year
06:49without more years and more money.
06:52That's where the player is assuming all the risk.
06:55That's a dangerous spot for them.
06:56So, this is just annually the business of the NFL.
07:01But the bottom line,
07:02and the column I wrote for the Miami Herald,
07:04you need these guys from a leadership standpoint.
07:06So, you need them invested.
07:08You need them bought in.
07:10I agree.
07:10And that means you need them.
07:12That means they need to be compensated.
07:14I've never been with you this much
07:15because most of the time I'm not.
07:17I'm with you on this one.
07:18I saw it yesterday,
07:19and I went,
07:20I got to have Omar on.
07:22I'm with you.
07:23I've been preaching it,
07:24and I'm not telling John Eric Sullivan.
07:25I know everybody's brother
07:26is giving him advice on what to take,
07:28and I'm not in that business.
07:30He knows,
07:30and we all know,
07:31and everybody knows
07:32where the holes in the team are.
07:34They're everywhere.
07:37There's only no holes at defensive tackle,
07:39and that depends on how talented
07:41you think the players are.
07:43Hey, so let me ask you.
07:45For me,
07:46in a perfect world
07:47of talent being equal
07:48for everything you need,
07:50I told Bo a couple days ago,
07:52I want a guard tackle
07:54or a tackle guard,
07:55whichever.
07:56I'm guessing there's a couple of them.
07:58At 11?
07:59Yeah, at 11.
08:00Okay, there are only two.
08:02I want to protect them before.
08:03I want to make sure
08:04we protect this guy
08:05and give him a shot
08:06with the best guys possible
08:07that I can line up day one,
08:10get his feet wet,
08:11and hopefully,
08:12he looks like a really good,
08:14solid player
08:15early in September, October.
08:17There are three offensive linemen
08:20that I could tell you
08:21would be good selections at 11.
08:23Maui Noah,
08:24obviously you know him,
08:25Fano from Utah,
08:26and then the Vega kid,
08:29the offensive guard
08:31from Penn State.
08:32Now, he's a,
08:33I would say,
08:34He's a guard.
08:35Yes, he's a guard.
08:36I would say him
08:38and Caleb Downs
08:39are probably the surest,
08:41safest picks
08:42that Miami can make
08:43at 11 in this draft
08:44if they're there.
08:46Surest, safest thing.
08:48You know they're going
08:48to be a good pro.
08:49So,
08:51I wouldn't mind
08:52if they went that route
08:53or either Caleb Downs,
08:55the safety,
08:56but my hope is that
08:58that LSU cornerback is there.
08:59I know,
09:00I know I'm asking for too much.
09:01He's probably not going
09:02to be there
09:03because I think he's,
09:04he's a Patrick Peterson
09:05in the making
09:07and I think you need
09:08that kind of thing.
09:08You're talking about
09:09Delaney or McCoy?
09:10Yeah.
09:10Which one, LSU or?
09:11No, no, no,
09:12Delaney.
09:13Mansour Delaney.
09:14He is that dude
09:15to me.
09:17But,
09:18but there's talent
09:19later on
09:20in the draft
09:20at cornerback
09:21and even
09:23Jeff Halfley
09:24basically made the point
09:25of, you know,
09:26he's developed
09:27a lot of young cornerbacks.
09:28He's developed
09:29a lot of young safeties.
09:30He doesn't need
09:31to necessarily
09:32take one early.
09:33Um, and, and hey,
09:35if that's your approach
09:36and, and your cornerback
09:37is your specialty,
09:38then let's, let's do it.
09:40I'm not big on safety
09:41in the first round.
09:42I, uh, how about for you?
09:44I just think that cover corner,
09:45that pass rush,
09:46a wide receiver
09:47that can catch 80, 90,
09:49a hundred passes
09:49and an offensive lineman.
09:51God, we've been talking
09:52about the line forever.
09:55Here's my question
09:56to you, Joe,
09:56because you say
09:58I'm not big on safety
09:58in the first round.
09:59I understand where
10:00you come from position of value,
10:01but Ed Reed
10:02was taken
10:03in the first round
10:03and for a role
10:04was taken
10:05in the first round.
10:06Um, Ed Reed
10:07might be the greatest
10:07safety of all time.
10:09And he was taken
10:09later in the first round.
10:11Keep him up.
10:11I mean, yes,
10:13Ed Reed is probably
10:13the greatest.
10:14Sean Taylor,
10:14Sean Taylor,
10:15probably.
10:16Yeah.
10:17I found him
10:18just a bigger version.
10:19I mean,
10:20do you want it?
10:21My thing about
10:22the 11th pick
10:23is I want a guy
10:24that I'm going to give
10:25a hundred million
10:26dollar contract to.
10:28I want to select one
10:30and I,
10:31and I don't want,
10:32and I don't feel comfortable
10:34just taking the safest pick.
10:35I want a guy
10:36who I think
10:37is going to be a star.
10:38Um,
10:39and I want to do that.
10:40I want to go.
10:41I,
10:42I,
10:42I,
10:43I just hope we can find it
10:44at one of those four
10:46positions,
10:46offensive line,
10:47wide receiver,
10:48pass rusher,
10:49or cover corner.
10:50Yeah.
10:51Um,
10:52it's wide receiver.
10:53Well,
10:54I don't think they're
10:54going to take wide receiver
10:5511.
10:56That's just my opinion.
10:57Uh,
10:57I don't think any of the
10:58wide receivers in this
10:59class is worth the 11th
11:00pick in the draft.
11:01I just,
11:02I think they're all okay
11:03receivers and I'm,
11:05I could do an okay
11:06receiver in the second
11:07round and get by.
11:08Well,
11:09if that's the case,
11:10then,
11:10uh,
11:10Hey man,
11:11I think we're all,
11:12I don't know what John
11:14Eric Sullivan is,
11:15um,
11:16as I just hope he's done.
11:18My,
11:18my point is I really
11:19want to look forward
11:20to this draft and I
11:21don't want to lose
11:21any of those guys.
11:23That's my,
11:23I'm with you off your
11:25article.
11:26I'm a weekend.
11:27We can all dolphin
11:28fans can go.
11:28I like this guy at
11:29Ohio state.
11:30I like this guy at
11:31Oregon and I like this
11:32guy at Miami and
11:34whatever your favorite
11:35flavor is.
11:35I'm good.
11:36I just don't want to
11:37lose some of the guys
11:39on a,
11:39we had a crummy year
11:41wins and loss wise,
11:42but we had some guys
11:43who are really,
11:43they're great leaders
11:45and they had really
11:45good years,
11:46man.
11:47But,
11:47but do they want to be
11:48here?
11:49Do they want to be
11:49here during a,
11:50during a rebuild,
11:51Joe?
11:52Do they want to be
11:52part of this?
11:53And,
11:54and that's what this
11:54organization has to
11:55figure out.
11:56And they got to
11:57compensate them if they
11:58want them to be part of
11:59this and they want them
12:00to be culture builders.
12:01You got,
12:02you got to compensate
12:03them.
12:04Sounds like he wants
12:05to be here.
12:05So I know he wants to
12:06get paid,
12:07but if you get your
12:08money,
12:08you're good here.
12:09No,
12:09no,
12:09I love living here.
12:10Okay.
12:11Yeah.
12:12You can live here in
12:12the off season though.
12:13You could also live.
12:14Well,
12:16if,
12:16if,
12:16if,
12:16if Mike McDaniel
12:17wants you in,
12:18in with the chargers,
12:20I'm pretty sure a deal
12:21could be worked out
12:22and figured out.
12:23So,
12:23but here's,
12:24here's the important
12:25question to you,
12:26Joe.
12:28If you can't get a deal
12:29done with Devon A.
12:30Chan,
12:31what do you,
12:32what's the baseline of
12:33what you'll accept to
12:34get back?
12:36Man,
12:37I hope we don't go,
12:38man.
12:38I,
12:39and I know it could
12:39happen.
12:40I know even though
12:41they're saying,
12:41I know it could happen
12:43and,
12:43and you know,
12:44his agent can get him
12:45all lathered up and say,
12:47you know,
12:47I can get you out of
12:48there and get you on a
12:49better team.
12:49And the whole thing
12:50that's Seattle have
12:51offers from a better
12:52team.
12:52So it would have to be,
12:54it would have to be,
12:56Oh God,
12:57it'd have to be a high
12:58second round pick.
12:59Okay.
13:01Top 50 selections.
13:03Yeah,
13:03but I,
13:04it's not,
13:04I mean,
13:05or the value.
13:06There's a good chance
13:07of whatever pick it is,
13:08it's never going to be as
13:09good as he is.
13:10No,
13:11that's,
13:11that's ultimately,
13:12it sucks.
13:14If anybody in this draft
13:15becomes Devon H and
13:17anybody that pick would
13:19be a very good pick.
13:21I'm not sure either one
13:22of those Notre Dame
13:23backs will ever look
13:24close.
13:24I completely agree with
13:26you,
13:27Joe.
13:27I'm good.
13:28I'm good on the Notre
13:29Dame backs.
13:29I think they're,
13:30they're nice and talented
13:31Jeremiah love,
13:32but I'm sorry.
13:33I don't see,
13:34I don't see a Devon H in
13:35there.
13:36Well,
13:36first of all,
13:37he's got a gear that
13:37no other guy has to
13:39start with that.
13:40You know,
13:40they say you can't teach
13:41size and you can't teach
13:42speed.
13:43That dude can run.
13:44So yeah,
13:45it's a,
13:46it's an interesting one.
13:47And I was afraid you're
13:48going to ask me that
13:49question.
13:50And I don't know,
13:52try to hold out.
13:53And if,
13:54you know,
13:54hopefully three or four
13:55teams,
13:55but I just hope.
13:58And,
13:59and what he's,
13:59why would HM want to
14:01stay here?
14:01If he knows some,
14:02the world championship
14:03team wants them and he
14:05can get his money going
14:06there,
14:06then,
14:07you know,
14:07that's kind of hard to
14:08you.
14:08I,
14:09what am I going to say?
14:09Well,
14:10why would he want to go
14:11to have a chance to win
14:12a Superbowl?
14:13get his money.
14:16And the question is,
14:17why would he want to be
14:18part of a rebuilding
14:19franchise for the next
14:20three years?
14:21Right.
14:22I hope they're special
14:24guys and they all want to
14:25be here,
14:25man.
14:25Cause this is where we
14:26are,
14:27Omar.
14:27That's it.
14:28They they're here.
14:29And,
14:30and I listen,
14:30there might be more
14:31tough love,
14:32you know,
14:33John,
14:33John,
14:34Eric Sullivan was not
14:34real popular on the
14:36last movie made with
14:38Waddle.
14:38I,
14:39I,
14:39I like the move.
14:40I'm sorry.
14:41You get two good young
14:42players for a player
14:43that you overpaid.
14:44And I'm,
14:44I'm sorry.
14:45John,
14:46Eric Sullivan said it
14:46best.
14:47Oh,
14:47he said,
14:48listen,
14:48right now it's favored
14:50towards Denver.
14:51But as soon as I get
14:53those two picks and they
14:55end up being good
14:55players,
14:56I'm going to,
14:56I'm going to get like,
14:57I got confidence.
14:58I'm going to get the
14:59guys that are going to
15:00come in here and be
15:00really good.
15:01So they've got a chance
15:02to get seven foundational
15:04pieces in this draft.
15:05If they can actually
15:06draft well.
15:07Um,
15:08and I like that you
15:09thinking first,
15:09second,
15:09and third round,
15:10that's beautiful.
15:11Uh,
15:12yeah.
15:12Oh yeah.
15:12Top,
15:13top hundred selections.
15:14You,
15:14you should be able,
15:15and it really comes down
15:16to evaluation of talent
15:18and we,
15:19you know,
15:20obviously it can't be
15:21any worse than it was.
15:23So hopefully it gets
15:24better.
15:25Um,
15:25hopefully it gets better.
15:26And then it comes down to
15:27coach and player development
15:29too.
15:29You like these guys.
15:30You've been spending time
15:31out.
15:31Do you like Halfley?
15:32Halfley's good with you.
15:33So you like those guys?
15:34Yeah,
15:34no,
15:35I do.
15:35I do,
15:36but yeah,
15:37I don't,
15:37I don't have a problem
15:38with anybody that that's
15:40been here.
15:40You know,
15:41I saw Jeff Ireland at the
15:42owners meeting and,
15:43and you know,
15:44Jeff,
15:44we had some good days
15:45with Jeff.
15:45No history won't record it
15:48that way,
15:49but as time has passed,
15:51you know,
15:51we had some good days with
15:52Jeff.
15:53We had some good draft
15:54picks with Jeff.
15:55Um,
15:56wait,
15:57time,
15:57timeout,
15:58timeout.
15:59Oh,
15:59what,
15:59what,
15:59what happened?
16:01You want to talk about
16:02two guys that had no chance
16:03because of mental health
16:04issues right off the bat.
16:06You want to talk about
16:06those,
16:07those fall into him.
16:08Those fall into him
16:08before.
16:10Oh,
16:10okay.
16:11Okay.
16:11Okay.
16:12Yeah.
16:12You're right.
16:13All right.
16:13I mean,
16:14let's tackle out of Stanford
16:15and a pass rusher out of
16:17Oregon.
16:17I'm not,
16:18cause I don't want to get
16:18into it,
16:19but when you start,
16:19I knew we just couldn't
16:21get along this whole time
16:22and now you,
16:23you made sound like he's
16:25about ready to become
16:26general manager of the
16:27year.
16:27And I'm going,
16:27wait a sec.
16:28He is not a general
16:28manager yet.
16:30He actually is a general
16:31manager.
16:31Yes.
16:32He's the senior show at,
16:35uh,
16:35at with the saints.
16:37Okay.
16:39He's a,
16:39you can call it whatever
16:40you want to,
16:41to me.
16:41I'm not his biggest fan.
16:43So no,
16:44I know you're not his
16:44biggest fan.
16:45It's fine.
16:45It's fine.
16:46It wasn't,
16:47it wasn't all bad,
16:48Joe.
16:48That's my point.
16:49It wasn't all bad.
16:50Now,
16:51what do you think Parcells
16:52thinks Ireland?
16:54I don't,
16:55I don't care what Parcells
16:56thinks.
16:56I feel like Parcells.
16:58Okay.
16:58Yeah.
17:00Part like that guy,
17:01that guy left you high and
17:02dry.
17:02He just,
17:03he just walked out of his
17:04job.
17:04He did.
17:05He left the early.
17:06He did.
17:07He thought everything was in
17:08good position.
17:09I mean,
17:10at least he did.
17:11You know,
17:12he could have walked out and
17:13took the whole contract.
17:14And so he,
17:15he stayed and did his work,
17:16but he snuck out the back,
17:17back door in the middle of the
17:18season.
17:19He did.
17:20Well,
17:20listen on that note,
17:21I'll let you run.
17:22Omar.
17:22Thank you,
17:23man.
17:23I appreciate you coming on and
17:25take care of yourself.

17:28Miami Herald dolphins,
17:29columnist and getting going
17:31here.

17:32beautifully there,
17:33by the way.
17:34We got all our favorite guys.
17:36We all got favorite guys,
17:37but like,
17:38I didn't say he was a favorite
17:39guy.
17:40I thought this was going to

17:43I'm at that age.
17:45I ain't letting stuff go
17:45anymore.
17:46No,
17:46no.
17:46On certain guys that I did
17:47well,
17:48though,
17:48I didn't do well and I
17:49didn't rip the guy personally
17:51for not having a personality
17:52and stupid stuff.
17:54He said on hard knocks.
17:55I didn't get into all that
17:56because why bring that up?
17:58I'll be nice.
17:58That's Omar's friend.
18:00It's not my friend.
18:02I'll tell you one thing
18:04about Omar.
18:05I don't know Omar.
18:06Omar got some good stuff
18:08on some of the guys all
18:09made some calls to Omar
18:10getting some good stuff on
18:12what's happening with the
18:13Miami Dolphins.
18:14Got to be nice to Omar's
18:14friends.
18:15Omar still,
18:15still,
18:16Omar knows a lot of stuff
18:18though.
18:19I got to tell you,
18:19and I'm proud of him.
18:20You know a lot of stuff.
18:23He knows a lot of stuff.
18:24Not everything is meant
18:25for public consumption.
18:27Oh,
18:27I know Omar,
18:28but I give you credit,
18:29man.
18:29You've been sitting on some
18:30really good stuff that I
18:31just found out about,
18:33and I'm going to let you
18:34go,
18:34Omar,
18:34because we got to get
18:35into some other problems.
18:36Speaking of guys having
18:37mental health issues and
18:39going through different
