00:00Let's talk about our team. Before we get to your thoughts on the draft, just because I haven't talked to
00:05you in a while, what do you think of this entire offseason? All of the players they've added on defense
00:12through free agency, several on offense. Give me your overall take on how busy Adam Peters and company have been
00:20since the season.
00:21Adam's been very busy. Adam's been very busy. The one thing that stood out to me is when you sit
00:29down and identify the needs of our football team, I think Adam has addressed all of them in a lot
00:36of very unique ways. You've got four of the five, I think, quote-unquote, edge rushers that are on one
00:41-year deals. You've added players that are playing. You want players that are playing for something. These guys are on
00:50one-year deals.
00:51If you play well, you're probably going to get a three-year deal out of this thing. If you don't,
00:55you're probably going to be gone. There's motivation there, just in the edge rushers alone. The wide receiving core, I
01:03think.
01:03Well, Oway, they gave him a four-year deal. The guy from the Chargers.
01:09Yeah, but I'm saying, but other than that, you're looking at, I think, like I say, four of the five
01:14one-year deals.
01:16So, you know, you've got guys that are, you know, going to be motivated. I felt like the draft was
01:22addressed, addressed certain needs. I think we're not probably being done with this. And the reason why I think Adam
01:29has done what he has done and to admire the job that he has done is this is potentially the
01:35year that you have money to spend because Jaden's contract is coming up.
01:39So as long as you have, as long as you have a quarterback on a rookie contract, you can do
01:44a lot of things.
01:45And it isn't a question of quantity when it comes to picks. It's a question of quality. Because you can
01:51find free agents. You can find, like, you know, you take a center in, you know, in the sixth round.
01:58You can, most, the most really good offensive linemen come from either free agency or they come in late round
02:04picks. You just look around the league at guys that have, you know, fought their way into positions that were
02:10just given a chance.
02:11And I think, you know, I look at the draft, every one of our draft picks to me was an
02:16excellent choice of a need that we had. You look at the free agents, it's the same thing. We needed
02:21to get better on defense. We need to get quicker on defense.
02:25The one thing I will say with David Blau is our offensive coordinator. I think it was a great choice
02:31for a couple reasons. Number one, I believe we'll be more of a, we'll run more play action.
02:36Yeah. We will not put Jaden in harm's way quite as often.
02:42Cliff had it, you know, initially with Jaden, when he's running around doing all that kind of stuff, it takes
02:46one year for the defensive coaches to figure out what's going on.
02:50Pretty simple. You know, because they're not a bunch of stupid people. So if you get, you get away with
02:55something the first year, you find out the next year it's not going to be as easy.
02:57I think we'll be a team that will want to run the football. The offensive line has gotten better. You
03:04know, athleticism at the tight end position, I think is critical in this day and age in football. That's improved.
03:12And, you know, Jaden will be back with a vengeance. You know, the big thing, you know, you talk about
03:17Jackson being in the tent, you know, Jaden went through a very difficult physical year last year.
03:23And now he's going to have to do things to be able to protect himself. And I think the offense
03:28will protect him as well.
03:31So it's, you know, it's, it's, it's going to be, I think we've become a very complete football team. And
03:37like I said, when you look down, you look at Dallas, look at Philly, look at the Giants and us,
03:41everybody has done things to improve.
03:43You know, Dallas got better on defense. Overall, I think the Giants added some people on defense to make them
03:48better. Philadelphia, we know how good they've been.
03:51So, and I think we're, you know, we're the, we're the ones that nobody really has a feel for yet,
03:57but I think people are going to find out just how good we really are.
04:00Yeah. I mean, I think more than anything that's happened over the last month and a half, you just have
04:04to have number five, come back and be available to play all the games and you're, you're a much better
04:09football team because of that.
04:11I want to finish up with this because I think the big topic now is what else after, you know,
04:17the first few waves of free agency in the draft and all eyes are on Brandon Iyuk in San Francisco
04:24and the belief that he'd like to play here and that maybe Washington would like to have them.
04:29Where are you on Brandon Iyuk?
04:31You know, a lot of the conversation has to do with the fact he played with Jaden.
04:35You know, well, you know, he and Jaden were team.
04:38You're in a different world now.
04:39You're in professional football.
04:41You're not in college football.
04:42Brandon has had, you know, didn't he walk away from 30 million?
04:47He's had between 30 and 40 million dollars of his contract voided.
04:51Yes.
04:52He walked, he walked, he walked away from 30 million dollars.
04:56Okay.
04:57Wouldn't you?
04:58What else?
04:58What else do I have to say?
04:59That's terrible advice and, and really poor judgment, isn't it?
05:04Well, I, you know, and yeah, judgment is important.
05:07Uh, you know, no question.
05:09He's a talented football player, but there were issues in San Francisco.
05:12You, you, like I said, you want people on your football team that are committed to winning.
05:19When somebody makes a decision like that, it, it, it forces you to take pause and say,
05:27what's going on there?
05:28Right.
05:29What's, you know, for someone to walk away from that much, but do you really love the game
05:34or do you, did you hate San Francisco that much?
05:38Do you not like the game?
05:40Because believe me, there aren't these kinds of paydays laying around out there in, in,
05:45in the real world.
05:46We, we, Kev, truthfully, we don't live in the real world.
05:50You know, we live in, we live in a fantasy world.
05:53When we're kids, we dream about doing these things.
05:56It's a dream world.
05:57It's a fantasy world.
05:58The numbers have gotten so big.
06:00Um, and God bless every one of them that gets it.
06:02I'm, I'm not one of those guys that sits around and say, oh, you know, it's, it's not like
06:07it was, who cares what it was good for everybody out there that has a chance to make money.
06:12But when you walk away from millions and millions and millions of dollars, you got to wonder what
06:19kind of commitment is that individual going to make to a football team?
06:23And, and believe me, we've got a decent receiving core.
06:26I think, you know, with our number two pick there, uh, Williams, I think we're, you know, uh, you
06:31know, you add to the position and you can find guys that want to play.
06:35You don't have to be the biggest.
06:37You don't have to be the fastest.
06:38All you want to be is a guy that wants to give you everything.
06:41He's got every play.
06:44Uh, I lied.
06:45I forgot.
06:46I wanted to ask you just for your thoughts.
06:49I know I do.
06:50I do this with you all the time.
06:51Sometimes it's your fault though, but I'd be remissed if I didn't ask you about Monty
06:56Coleman and your thoughts on his passing.
06:58Oh, God bless him.
06:59I'm so sorry to hear, you know, I saw Monty last year at, um, at one of the alumni games
07:05and he was in a wheelchair and, you know, we all sort of huddled around and we knew he
07:10was sick at that time.
07:11Didn't know how, how sick he was.
07:13Uh, I don't know what it was.
07:15I don't know if it was ALS or not.
07:16I'm not sure, uh, what it was, but my, I nicknamed Monty Superman.
07:22He, he had the body of Adonis.
07:25He was absolutely one of the greatest physical specimens I've ever seen.
07:31You know, you think of Richie Milad and Neil and Monty, um, and all those guys that, that
07:36played for us at, at that period of time.
07:39Uh, he was really special and to see, you know, to see things in his life physically change
07:45and, and, you know, sort of diminished that way was heartbreaking when I saw him a year
07:50ago and, and his passing, he leaves, he leaves a great memory.
07:55Uh, God bless his family.
07:57Our prayers go out to them, but, uh, he's always going to be in my mind.
08:01He's every image I have of him is one very simple one.
08:04I see him with a cape on for the big, big M cape, not an escape, a big M cape.
08:10Yeah.
08:11You, you know, um, Tom Levero told me yesterday, uh, on my podcast, cause he wrote a book and
08:17interviewed Monty and he said, Monty was such used as such a Swiss army knife, kind of a
08:24player by Richie in particular.
08:26I mean, you know, Richie talked about just how you could put Monty anywhere on the field.
08:30He could, he could be your fifth or sixth defensive back essentially with number 51, uh, on his
08:36Jersey.
08:36But Tommy said that Monty once told him that he was a little bit bitter, uh, about being
08:43used that way because he was never viewed as just a linebacker.
08:48And when you go through his career, he needed, he didn't make one pro bowl.
08:52He didn't make one all pro team, but we know how good he was, but the rest of the league
08:58and fans and media people didn't because he played so many different spots.
09:03And Kevin, there's one other thing that people, I don't realize when Monty and Dexter joined
09:09our Redskin football team, they were both gunners on our punt.
09:13Right.
09:14So you've got what Dexter's what?
09:16Two, two 55, two 55 Monty's two 35.
09:21And these guys are covering punts.
09:24That's how good they were.
09:26You know, Dexter and Monty were our, were our gunners.
09:28Right.
09:29So that, that speaks volumes for his athleticism, uh, his unselfish nature to, to play the game.
09:35And like I said, I, you know, um, hopefully, you know, well, he's, he's out of pain and
09:40at peace.
