Omar Kelly joins the show as Joe credits him for coining the term “Green Bay South” to describe the new Miami Dolphins regime led by Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley. He emphasizes the need for more alpha personalities in the locker room, something the team has lacked, while also weighing in on Hafley’s comments about Chop Robinson. Omar also breaks down what to expect from Malik Willis, noting the Dolphins will lean into his mobility and athleticism, with Hafley prioritizing dynamic QBs moving forward.

00:00I'm not looking to I'm gonna we're gonna look to do this our way I have so much respect for
00:05how the Packers do things from the top down but this is not going to be like we're trying to
00:11recreate anything what I tried to bring to Green Bay was a play style on defense that we were going
00:17to play harder and more physical and more violent than everybody that we played and that's what I
00:21wanted to add to the Green Bay Packers and I think for the most part if you turned on our
00:25tape
00:26we played pretty hard so I want our whole team here in Miami to play with that same mindset this
00:32isn't just about me coaching the defense now this is about the culture of every person that touches
00:37that field that's what I wanted to look like so this is not going to be yeah this is how
00:42we did
00:43it in Green Bay I have a ton of respect for everything in Green Bay I mean even these guys
00:47I mean they've been unbelievable but this is now about the Miami Dolphins and how we're going to do
00:54things Dolphins head coach Jeff Halfley there it's time to head out to the Toyota of Hollywood
00:58hotline shop over 2,000 Toyotas on sale one location Toyota of Hollywood on 441 with in Hollywood and
01:03shared in Toyota of Hollywood.com all right and we bring in from the owners meetings out in Arizona
01:09the originator by the way of Green Bay South Omar Kelly Miami Herald Dolphins columnist up early this
01:17morning that was pretty good man I got to tell you threw that out there and everybody
01:22goes I got to give it to Omar he got a great reaction uh I wasn't seeking a reaction from
01:30the uh the question uh you know in fact I asked it to Matt LaFleur and he says I call
01:37it Green Bay
01:37South too um and you know what they're doing that they every time they speak they talk about Green Bay
01:45they have it brought up they have it in their conversations and what they do and you know talk
01:50about um you know Ron Wolfe and so and interestingly enough this isn't the first time I'm introduced to
01:57the Green Bay way because Bill Parcells used it a lot him and Ron Wolfe were very close and everything
02:03that Green Bay did Bill Parcells did um that they they worked off the same blueprint so it'll be
02:10interesting to see how that plays out especially with with what's going on here and with the 11 draft
02:16picks which is clearly gonna you know build this team's foundation yeah yeah no question about that
02:23we're just talking about that and I'm glad you said that so um boy I'll tell you what you guys
02:29I don't
02:29know what you guys asked I didn't hear the question but Jeff Halfley hit that there ain't no being late
02:34and everybody's gonna understand if uh we're gonna be talking about what we expect from him but he must
02:41have mentioned that not late thing about five or six times um somebody asked him directly that
02:47question and because he didn't make any reference the past years but he doesn't believe in that
02:52obviously I think it's it was about setting a standard for what his expectations are um we we've heard
02:59him talk about how he's going to approach things a couple of times now um and it's about laying a
03:06foundation of what the expectations are building a physical team um the the the interesting part
03:12about coincidentally enough I'm doing a column on what you know what is the Green Bay way yeah um it's
03:18about the people and the process primarily if you start talking to them and making sure that you add the
03:23right people to the organization now what I find interesting about that and I I say this all the time
03:30and me and you get into it Joe um this ain't Green Bay South Florida is probably one of the
03:36most
03:37challenging places to hold a professional sports team and or to house a professional sports team
03:44clearly the Heat have figured it out and got it right and most of that is probably people in the
03:50process but Dolphins haven't figured it out and haven't gotten it right and and even going back to
03:56your days I know you guys had a ton of success but those streets they be calling Joe you know
04:01it
04:01they they call but I I still I and you're right you and I are always going to disagree on
04:06this topic
04:06you get character guys uh like like a lot of these guys come down here married in serious
04:12relationships and I'm just saying you can't say that every guy's going out to South Beach four nights
04:19away you're right I remember a year Bill Parcells they intentionally drafted all all married guys
04:26that was the Tannehill year uh or something like that they they targeted Tannehill yeah they
04:31targeted married guys and did you know the majority of those guys got divorces in their first two years
04:39of being in Miami and it was but you know Dolphins have had they've known this has been an issue
04:47for a while
04:48they've many different regimes have tried different approaches to address it you right now it's it's
04:56at the point where Philbin Philbin felt like he couldn't have players with strong personalities so
05:02basically everybody with a strong personality got banished but that that's a lack of leadership
05:07I actually talked to Dan Campbell about this um at the owners meeting and you know he and because Dan
05:15you know Dan likes alphas Dan's attracted to alphas and he's like you can't win without an alpha
05:20and I've seen so many times this organization run from alpha players and because of how difficult
05:28they are to manage and and I personally truly truly do believe that that's because this organization
05:33has lacked quality leadership all throughout the years all right so that's part of it I I would get
05:38into and by the way in the drafting of just getting stronger personality guys and you're right
05:44maybe this all ties in with the guys that you know that that aren't uh don't have a lot of
05:51self-control in college by the way it's probably a good way to start this whole thing whether the
05:56mental health plays into it or not yeah let's talk about another topic though because you and I
06:01always can disagree on this yeah I'm not saying you're 100% wrong I'm not but I don't think I'm
06:06not
06:06saying you're 100% wrong either because you know I figured it you guys figured it out you got your
06:10ever figured it out you you run them streets though well we had a lot we had a little bigger
06:14problem going on in the 80s when I got here than than just going out we had that powder where
06:19guys
06:19that wasn't just going out till two or three in the morning end up being you know three or four
06:23in the
06:23afternoon the next day where the hell is he we haven't seen him god only knows where he was uh
06:29chop
06:30Robinson I thought was an interesting one it's kind of the key guy going into year three yeah you guys
06:35made it real clear like hey 15 games four sacks 10 solo tackles not great against the run so you
06:42only played him in certain situations he did talk about gets off the ball fast we've seen that we
06:48know the things he can do uh but he was at a point like I'm really looking forward to coaching
06:54this guy
06:54up they need to get something out of chop in year three I would actually disagree with you about the
06:59I'm really looking forward to that that was not said and in fact both times chop was brought up it
07:05was because I intentionally brought it out okay okay that I'm I'm very cognitive of who they
07:12volunteer to bring up and who you know they don't volunteer a lot of guys bring it bringing them up
07:20you you you really gotta pull it out of them um and chop is one of those guys I really
07:26asked the
07:26question because I saw the way that Halfley was glowing in Green Bay Packers people were there and they
07:32were just obsessed with asking Green Bay questions and and and and um the pat I forget what the pass
07:38rusher's name is um the one that they traded from Dallas uh in he yeah Michael Parsons okay and remember
07:47when we drafted chop Robinson it was because he had these crazy ridiculous athletic metrics like Michael
07:55Parsons and and seemingly you know our our front office executives thought that he was going to be the
08:01next great pass rusher coming out of Penn State he had no numbers he had no numbers at Penn State
08:06they
08:06were as empty as they were last year yeah yes um and so I I brought that up to half
08:11like listen that
08:14that athletic metrics say that this guy should be Michael Parsons you know are you are you excited to
08:22coach him or or excited to see what the potential is and truthfully speaking good coaching should be able
08:29to pull out more from from chop Robinson I agree it's and and they didn't have a position coach last
08:35year they didn't you know I I really didn't feel like you know he he did he had he had
08:42a guy who's
08:43Jalen Phillips who's a hundred million dollar player now ahead of him so so it's not exactly like
08:50chop had a runway to take off and didn't um he's been adequate the problem is that we have these
08:59higher
08:59loftier expectations same thing with Kenneth Grant um you know I found it very interesting that
09:04Sullivan mentioned Jordan Phillips ahead of Kendall Grant but I would mention Jordan Phillips ahead of
09:10Kendall Grant too because Jordan Phillips played better um it's it's just with these first round
09:16picks we we got to get more we we got to get more and I mean you have this discussion
09:21and argument
09:22all the time I agree that it's got number one's got to be they're called your franchise picks there's a
09:27reason Thursday is so popular in the NFL with fans and everything else big numbers Thursday night they
09:33drop off for Friday and Saturday yeah yeah if and if you didn't miss so much I would tell you
09:38that it
09:38it would probably be more important but I too many times I've seen the Jordan Phillips's of the world be
09:44better than the Kenneth Grant's of the world well we got two of them this year they better be good
09:48fresh start and uh John Eric Sullivan his first draft man this is uh this is a big one hey
09:54listen I feel
09:54pretty good that they're doing things differently got a lot of new people they got a lot of new uh
10:00scouts a lot of new people around uh that he's brought in with them to help him out I got
10:05to ask
10:06you about Malik Willis um both guys and their comments and again they know him better than anybody
10:13and they backed it up with pretty good money in the first two years for a guy that's that's been
10:17a
10:18backup what'd you think of their comments about Malik oh I mean that's their guy they they really
10:23believe in what he has in terms of the arm talent in terms of the development they're they are far
10:28from
10:28telling you he's a finished product um what I found very interesting especially talking with Matt LaFleur
10:33the biggest thing that they love about him is his mobility um you know in in Green Bay he can
10:40extend
10:40plays and and Halfley brought this up when talking about another quarterback who I can't remember but it
10:46was about extending the ability to extend plays and that's what defensive coordinators fear the absolute
10:53most and that's and he explained to me why there's such a fear factor with those quarterbacks that
10:59can that can extend plays or can make things happen with broken plays and it made it very evident and
11:05clear that he's going to always have an athletic quarterback that's the model that he wants to work
11:11from because of how many challenges it presents to defensive coordinators so and and Sullivan basically
11:18said I I don't I know you I don't think you guys have that audio um but he he said
11:24he said hey
11:26don't think we're not going to select the quarterback because we this is it people might not understand it now
11:31but this is what's in the best interest of this franchise and they are hosting all the top upper echelon
11:37quarterbacks and with 11 picks you have no excuse not to draft the quarterback because yeah you people it
11:44the way I present it is if you draft the quarterback if you just sign Malik Willis
11:50I'm only me Joe Omar Kelly calmness covering the Miami Dolphins the Miami Herald I'm only allowing
11:56this regime to draft to to make two picks two bites of the apple at a quarterback you if Malik
12:03Malik
12:04Willis counts as one bite and then I'll give you another chance to go get a rookie let you know
12:10go get
12:10go draft one however I will say this you took the Malik Willis bite now and if you just so
12:18happen
12:18to draft a quarterback now that you like it'll count as one bite and I'll let you draft another
12:24one later you understand what I'm saying Joe if you take two bites of the apple now it only counts
12:30as
12:30one bite and truthfully speaking who cares how you get the elite quarterback as long as you get it
12:38and the one thing I want to say about the Green Bay Packers organization is they've had tremendous
12:42amount of consistency and stability but they've also had hall of fame quarterback transferring over
12:47to hall of fame quarterback transferring over to very good quarterback who sat watched learned okay
12:54the sit watching learn component of this is a very important component so and I know how people are
13:02excited about Quinn yours and I actually like Quinn yours but my biggest issue with this franchise since I
13:07started covering this team in 2007 is they are absolutely fundamentally opposed to quarterbacks
13:14competing a quarterback has to be gifted the starting role and the leadership position even if his
13:22teammates come out and tell the coaches we would prefer the other guy which has happened on multiple
13:28occasions here so why continue to have that timid mentality you have the ability to go draft another
13:36quarterback have them all compete maybe you end up with a Russell Wilson situation why wouldn't you do
13:41it now you you think Malik Willis is uh gonna start week one yeah absolutely okay do I think he's
13:48do I
13:48think he's gonna be the starter week 17 I have no idea oh I know that's different I just said
13:53to start
13:53this season yeah uh he's in a great situation he knows the whole thing if he gets it by the
13:59way I and
13:59just to go on that off that topic a little bit I saw Matt LaFleur said uh how much he
14:05he really liked
14:06Malik and and his potential and everything he said but you got to give him a chance man you got
14:12to get
14:12some some guys around him to play and by the way I think they know that I said that again
14:17this morning
14:18that a lot of these uh first seven picks need to be about putting an offensive line together and
14:25getting him some guys to throw the ball to yeah Sullivan basically said our right side of our
14:29offensive line needs to be rebuilt and and that included Austin Jackson um they they are very
14:35aware that they don't have enough playmakers they don't know what they have on the team right now
14:40um that's what OTAs is going to help them kind of understand like they don't know they don't know
14:45these they don't know Malik they don't know Taj they don't you know and he's talked about that he's
14:50got to get his eyes on them they got to be able to coach them they got to see where
14:53they are
14:54see what the capabilities are but yeah I wouldn't be shocked if two receivers are added to this team
15:00and and not just that but added to the team in the draft and then probably at the end after
15:05after the
15:06draft we take another stab at it in free agency because there's tons of unemployed quality receivers
15:12out there they're just a little bit aged um but at a certain point you you you need leadership in
15:18this
15:18on this team and in this in this order to be the right guy not the guy you like the
15:22most though
15:22oh stop it I ain't gotta bring him up hey I already know anybody listens to you know for
15:29four years you've been sitting at home man you're throwing to EJ hey uh so I I gotta ask you
15:34one
15:34other one that's really uh that I thought was interesting because I get all the time I'm guessing
15:38you do too with John Eric Sullivan and I don't know if Jeff Halfway had to answer it too
15:43and everybody goes hey man are we in a rebuild I don't know how else I know Florio said the
15:47same
15:47thing and he said well it's false to say we we aren't trying to win we are we're but it's
15:53a
15:54unique situation as in you know where a lot of our money is dead uh but we're we we're gonna
16:01try to
16:01win every game and so you know everybody wants to know because our fans are all beat we got a
16:05beaten
16:05up fan base and some beaten up writers like you your patience is blown out with how they do things
16:11so like I'm working on establishing new patients Joe there you are no no I'm with you I hey I'm
16:17guilty of some of this stuff myself my man anyway what would you take out of that because I got
16:21fans
16:22like so what's it gonna look like this year I said they're gonna win some games but we're not gonna
16:27be
16:27the most talented team and they could be but lack of experience and uh and we need Malik to play
16:34well
16:34to really get an idea and then we can go there's a chance you win four five six games you
16:40can feel
16:41good about it if you see a lot of young guys playing well you agree I I they hate the
16:47word
16:47rebuild retool whatever our word they do not like it um and I understand what that you're you're you're
16:54you haven't even met with your players this this can't be the poison that you feed them I remember the
16:592019 tanks tank for two a season um that that served as a cancer in in the locker room it
17:07I I do
17:07firmly believe that it led to mink of wanting to get out of here um it's just he could not
17:12understand why an organization would want to intentionally be bad and I and I think he's
17:17right in hindsight um I I learned plenty of lessons from the tank for two a season that I
17:22will take some accountability for if not full accountability for yeah two it was all my fault
17:27I'm sorry dolphin fans um but but he you know they they the one thing that they both said
17:37that I think was a message that they want to get out of fan base and they both did issue
17:41messages to
17:42fan base it is that yes we signed a lot of cheap young players but these guys have some talent
17:49and
17:50more importantly they will have opportunity they're better players than what they've shown throughout their
17:54career and some of these guys are first second round picks and put in the right situation give
17:59them the right motivation give them the proper coaching their careers can take off or be stabilized
18:05and and I could I can name 10 to 20 pros like that that I've seen throughout the years where
18:12that
18:12you have a bunch of motivated dudes that have been that maybe were role players last year but we've
18:17seen before that and they're going to get a chance to be frontline guys get those numbers up and you
18:22know what that means Mike was very open about it Mike McDaniel I'm here to get you guys as much
18:27money as you can make and uh and that's kind of pretty good motivation for a lot of guys half
18:32halfley has a Sullivan has a thing where he's going to put it in a bag and shake it up
18:36and see what
18:37comes out yeah that that's about that's about every position here on the roster like what all 12
18:43cornerbacks they were like we have no idea who's going to be playing cornerback for this team
18:49hey Omar got to ask you because we're running out of time here do they have the party last night
18:53did you did you guys know they had the party two nights ago two nights ago was everybody there the
18:57whole dolphin gang there from the to see Tom Garfinkel and everybody there saw Tom Garfinkel I believe
19:03the Dolphins did a private dinner and then showed up at the um showed up at the at the event
19:09later um
19:10yeah you uh you on your way home today then huh yeah man I'm okay good trying to get home
19:17all right Omar hey man I appreciate you spending some time and getting up early you're on that
19:21east coast time man thank you so much I appreciate it buddy always Joe all right Omar Kelly Miami
19:26Harold Dolphins calmness with us
19:28you
