The Miami Dolphins continue to reshape their roster around new QB Malik Willis, a high-character addition that the current GM and head coach know extremely well. While familiarity is a plus, the reality is this team still has plenty of holes to fill across the roster. That leads to a throwback comparison, with Joe pointing to old-school Dolphins like Don McNeal, who made an immediate impact as a rookie. The message is clear: Miami needs to find and hit on day-one contributors like that in this year’s draft.

00:00It's sort of comparing back to the Dolphins.
00:02The Dolphins are really, like, through their first homestand
00:05as far as the season right now.
00:07Here comes the test.
00:08It will be the draft.
00:09You know, we know they got a hit on the draft or they're in trouble.
00:13And, you know, we've seen it before.
00:16But they invested a lot.
00:18And what I love about John Eric Sullivan is he said, yeah, bring it on.
00:22This is all on me.
00:23You know, this is.
00:24He does, man.
00:25You know.
00:25He ain't doing that team stuff or sitting at breakfast saying we're laughing
00:28at you guys and all that.
00:29Man, he is like, hey, this is on me.
00:32I'm in charge of it.
00:34Let's see how it goes.
00:35Same with Malik Willis.
00:36I brought him in.
00:37I believe in him.
00:38I think he's going to be really good.
00:40You know, I think the messaging from Malik Willis has been really good.
00:44You know, you see a lot of things about him.
00:46He did a good job.
00:46Just the things.
00:47But you see, you know, he's a worker.
00:51He just seems to be the right kind of guy.
00:53I think his character has also come out, and they've seen it up close.
00:58I was going to say, they worked with him for two years.
01:00So they know him better than any quarterback they're ever going to take.
01:06So, look, you've seen him on the field.
01:10You've seen what he is in the huddle.
01:11You've seen what he is in the locker room.
01:13You've seen what he is in the meeting room.
01:16You've seen every aspect of that guy for two years.
01:20And so, you know, if you're going to dip your toe in the water,
01:23and they didn't hesitate.
01:25No, they didn't.
01:26No, they made up their mind a long time ago.
01:27As soon as that window opened up, man.
01:29Really, the question was Malik Willis, what he wanted to do.
01:32Because he could have gone to Arizona, where they do have more talent.
01:37Yeah.
01:37They're running a similar offense.
01:39But he may say something about Malik Willis, what he thinks about this group.
01:45Yeah.
01:45It's just, hey, man, I just want, I hope, and I think they will.
01:50I don't think hope.
01:51I know they know this.
01:53Just give him a chance to have success.
01:56That's all.
01:56And, again, I'm with you, but I'm not worried about wins.
01:59Give him a chance to show all of us and himself that he can be a front-line quarterback.
02:06Give him guys to throw to.
02:07Give him time to throw and put in an offense that really allows him to have some success.
02:14Look, as I said, I believe those, if these draft choices you had last year
02:20and two years ago, you know, produce the way they should and get better,
02:27you know, they've got to get a lot better.
02:29All those guys, Savaiya Naya, it's got to get a lot better.
02:31Oh, that whole draft.
02:32I tell you what, if they could just be average, just be average players,
02:36that'd be nice.
02:37That'd be nice because they aren't right now.
02:39You don't need to be a superstar, but just don't be.
02:42Look, you know, I believe Jonah last year, he was just seeing things he had never seen.
02:51And you hope that this is a guy, and I think he's this kind of guy,
02:55because I'd watch him on the sideline, and I'd see, you know,
02:58you could see that it's important to him, right?
03:02And so go out there.
03:04Look at all the things that you haven't seen and try to figure it out
03:07and get an offensive line coach to teach him, you know,
03:10I thought Butch Berry was a great offensive line coach,
03:14but, you know, he needs a little more fundamental.
03:17And he's seen, all these guys have seen a lot of snaps, you know, a lot of snaps.
03:22And to me, if you're, you know, the value of a rookie year is, you know,
03:27if you're not playing your best, you've seen a lot of what you didn't do right,
03:32and you've got six to eight months to figure it out.
03:37We're going to find out right away if there's much value in that.
03:42Hey, guys, they're going to bring in some competition.
03:44So there will be a Savini backup plan to get somebody else, I think, on the other side.
03:50And I don't think they're sitting there waiting on Austin Jackson
03:54to see if he can stay healthy.
03:55I think they're going to get another tackle on the right side ready to go,
03:59and only be for him because of injury.
04:01There's a couple of those guys out there in the draft that can play tackle guard, right?
04:08So, you know, if Austin's playing well there and you get one of those guys,
04:13okay, you make him a guard.
04:14If he's not, then you just drop him out there,
04:17but then you've got a hole on that right side in the guard position.
04:22I'm guessing they've had a chance.
04:24You know, we always say all these things, and we ride and talk about all these things,
04:27and they must be driving in going, you don't think we've freaking seen that?
04:30Yeah, duh.
04:31What do you think?
04:31You don't think we've seen the guy whiff and we didn't know at a crucial time.
04:35Are you getting pushed backwards?
04:36The question is going to become what player is there to make the most impact?
04:41You know, because they need everything.
04:43They need everything.
04:44By the way, the first pick.
04:45The first pick, because honestly, you're picking 11,
04:49you're going to have a lot of good players.
04:50You're going to have a chance to get actually out of some positions the top guy on your board.
04:55And then the question is, which one do I want?
04:59A guy that can give me 60, 70 catches right off the bat?
05:02Do I want a dominant little offensive lineman that can come in?
05:05Or a pass rusher?
05:07Well, so I think you've got four spots that you would take.
05:12Wide receiver.
05:13Yeah.
05:13Right?
05:14Cornerback still is a need.
05:17Cover corners, man.
05:18Edge rusher.
05:18Yeah.
05:19Offensive lineman that's versatile, right?
05:21Yeah.
05:22I mean, you know, those are primary needs for this team.
05:26So you're almost pretty much the team, right?
05:29Yeah.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Yeah, but those are the impact positions.
05:34That's why we got a lot of picks in the first three rounds.
05:36No, I'm with you.
05:37I'm with you.
05:38So they could almost basically, who do we think is going to be a great player?
05:43More than more than.
05:43Yes.
05:44I know.
05:44I know everybody.
05:45Everybody says, well, we're going to take the best player.
05:48They don't take the best player.
05:49This is a time you take the best player.
05:52I'm going to tell you.
05:53So you go to the cornerback position.
05:54I hope they get a Don McNeil with this draft.
05:58If they're going to go cornerback, they get a Don McNeil.
06:00They get you going old school.
06:00Right?
06:01All right.
06:01I mean.
06:02Mac was ready to go day one, man.
06:04Mac was.
06:05And I know when we look at all the first round picks, Bo, and you're part of that club.
06:09But Mac was good.
06:10You saw it.
06:11It's funny.
06:12Everybody I talked to from that era talks about, okay, who's the best player?
06:20You're the best athlete.
06:21Don McNeil's name always comes up.
06:24Look, Don.
06:25Mac was the fastest guy on our team until Duke came along.
06:28He slipped into that spot.
06:31And you almost didn't know he was there.
06:35It was so seamless when he came in.
06:37He never said a word.
06:38Never said a word.
06:38He was a silent assassin, man.
06:40The guy never talked.
06:41Good Christian guy.
06:42Ended up being a minister.
06:43I spent all that money going to counselors for marriages and stuff.
06:47I could have done it with him for free.
06:49I found out four or five guys were going to him.
06:51Maybe that's why he didn't speak up around you, Joe.
06:55You went to the Robert Jones ministry.
06:57Yeah, you got Sam Madison.
07:00You're a bad guy.
07:01You know, you better not tell that story.
07:03You're a bad man.
07:04No, no, no.
07:04Some things you got to keep in the.
07:06You're a bad man, Dave.
07:08I want to hear the story.
07:09No, you don't.
07:11That's a part-time Christian club.
07:13You're a bad man, Kim Lowe.
07:14I hope Seth Leavitt's not up right now.
07:16You're a bad, bad guy.
07:19But, yeah, no, it's funny he said that, man.
07:22I always think of, and by the way, Dwight was the second pick for us that year.
07:26We took Alabama guys in my draft.
07:29And Dwight had to sit behind Mark Bernard for a couple years.
07:32Well, for one.
07:33For one, yeah.
07:33And then, fine.
07:34But, yeah, so Mack lined up one.
07:36I'll never forget.
07:37I always say this.
07:38Steve Barkowski, I came home my first year.
07:40And Bart was the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons at the time.
07:44He said, geez, I never seen a guy that good.
07:48He goes, he's unbelievable.
07:49So, I couldn't wait to get home.
07:51Hey, Mack.
07:51Bart thinks you're really freaking good, man.
07:54But, yeah, he was good.
07:56And he never just went about his business.
07:59And it drives me nuts when people in town are, oh, he wasn't that good.
08:03Remember what happened in that game against the Redskins at the time.
08:08You know what reminds me, who reminds me of him?
08:12Minka Fitzpatrick.
08:13Because I think when we got Minka and I saw him play, I go, oh, man, this guy.
08:17He was really good.
08:18It took me like two plays.
08:19Yeah, he was ready to go.
08:20Oh, okay.
08:21This guy is really.
08:22I'll never forget, we're up in, I know we were either in Tampa or in Jacksonville.
08:28And it's his first game.
08:30You know, it's our first preseason game.
08:32And they run a little route out there.
08:35And the quarterback pumps.
08:37And he bites the cheese a little bit.
08:39Throws the ball right over the guy's head.
08:41And, you know, and you look at Minka's, and you could see him shaking his head.
08:45Guy tried, another quarter later, the guy tried the same thing and he picked it off.
08:49Yeah.
08:49You fool me once, but you're not going to fool me twice.
08:52And then that was, so to me, he was, he was, he was really good his first year.
08:56And then all the crap that, all the crap that's gone on.
08:59It just, you know, I mean, look, he'd been to five pro pros.
09:02I was going to say.
09:03It was sort of the Roberto Luongo trade where, where for his prime years, he wasn't here.
09:10They got him at the start.
09:11And the finish, but when he was great, he was great.
09:14Yeah.
09:15You didn't get the great.
09:15Luongo was great here at the end too.
09:17It is funny when you talk about what you want your first round pick.
09:20And obviously, if you could ever line up and be as good as Don McNeil was.
09:25Yeah.
09:25First play in practice, whenever that was.
09:28And everybody went, holy crap.
09:30He's our best cover guy.
09:32And it's not even close.
09:33And he, and he could play bump and run.
09:35He could, he ran four, three 40.
09:38There's a reason he went high in the draft.
09:39There's no question besides the one, a national championship.
09:42We got to go to break here, man.
09:43Uh, we got a lot of stuff.
09:45Malik Willis, man.
09:47I'll tell you what, they went all in on him and, and they, they made sure everybody knew
09:51when they were there.
09:52Hey man, we're not backing down on how good we think Malik Willis is.
09:56And those guys will all find out and see it up close right now.
09:59I want to tell you about what is going on at your South Florida Chevy dealers.
10:03Yeah.
