00:05In this video, we will be learning everything about regular verbs and irregular verbs.
00:11It will include what they exactly are, how they are formed, and what is the difference between the two.
00:18So without a further go, let's get started.
00:22Let's first remember what we have already learned in our parts of speech video series related to forms of verb.
00:30During the discussion of forms of verb in our video, we understood that verbs change as per tense.
00:36And they are divided into three main forms, which are base form or present form, past form, and past participle
00:45form.

00:52Now, let's look into the examples of it.
00:56Verb arrow in present tense becomes arrowed in past and arrowed in past participle form.
01:03Let's look into one more example.
01:06Verb drink in present form becomes drank in past form and drunk in past participle form.
01:15Now, as you can see, for converting the word arrowed to past and past participle form, we used ed.
01:23But for converting the word drink, we didn't use any such pattern.
01:27So the verb, which is following the pattern for conversion from present to past and past to past participle form,
01:35is a regular verb.
01:36And the verb, which is not following any pattern for conversion from present to past and past to past participle
01:44form, is a regular verb.
01:48Based on the formation of past and past participle form, verbs are divided into two types, regular verbs and irregular
01:58verbs.
01:59Regular verbs are verbs that follow a fixed pattern by conversion from present to past and past participle form, while
02:08irregular verbs are verbs that do not follow a fixed pattern by conversion from present to past and past participle
02:16form.
02:17Regular verbs are formed by adding ad, d, or ied to verb's base form.
02:23As for the last character in the verb, as irregular verbs do not follow any such pattern, we cannot form
02:30just by adding a specific character, the irregular verbs.
02:34Let's now understand how regular verbs are formed.
02:37Most regular verbs are formed by adding ad to the base form of the word.
02:42Let's take example of verb jump.
02:45We add ad at the end of the word to get the past or past participle form.
02:51So, jump become jump in past and past participle form.
02:57Let's look into some more example.
03:00Coil converts to coiled in past form and past participle form.
03:05Loop converts to looply in past and past participle form.
03:10Now, there are some cases where we need to modify some parts of the words when we are adding ad.
03:17Let's look into those cases.
03:19Regular verbs formed by adding d to the base form of the word.
03:25If a verb ends in e, we simply add d to convert it into past and past participle form.
03:32For example, like, yell the word ends with e.
03:38So, we just add d after e for getting the past and past participle forms.
03:43So, it will become like for past and past participle form both.
03:49Let's look into two more examples.
03:51Agree becomes agreed by adding d for getting the past and past participle form.
03:58Die becomes died by adding d for getting the past and past participle form.
04:05Let's look into one more case.
04:07Regular verbs formed by adding i-e-d to the base form of the verb.
04:12If the verb ends in a consonant y, we replace it with i-e-d.
04:19For example, cry.
04:21Here, the verb ends with y.
04:24So, we replace y with i-e-d for getting the past and past participle forms.
04:29So, cry becomes cried in past as well as past participle form.
04:35Let's look into some more examples.
04:38Study becomes studied by replacing y to i-e-d.
04:42in past as well as past participle form.
04:45Mary becomes married by replacing y to i-e-d in past and past participle form.
04:54So, here we understood how to create regular verbs.
04:58Let's now look into irregular verbs.
05:00We understood that irregular verbs do not form any fixed pattern.
05:05For our understanding, we will divide them into four groups.
05:10Group 1.
05:11Group 1 will contain verbs whose all three verb forms are same.
05:17Group 2 will contain same past and past participle form of verbs.
05:22Group 3 will contain same base and past participle form of verbs.
05:28And group 4 will contain all three forms of verb which are different.
05:34Let's look into examples of irregular verbs of group 1.
05:38All three verb forms are same.
05:40Examples for base form, past form and past participle form.
05:45Put in base form remains put in past and past participle form.
05:50Cut in base form remains cut in past and past participle form.
06:02Let's look into examples of group 2.
06:05Same past and past participle form.
06:09By in base form becomes bought in past and remains same bought in the past participle form as well.
06:17Feel in base form becomes found in past participle form as well.
06:26When in base form becomes worn in past and remains worn in past participle form as well.
06:34Let's look into group 3 having same base and past participle form.
06:40Come in base form converts to came in past form and in past participle form it again converts to come.
06:48Become in base form converts to became in past form and in past participle form it again converts to become.
06:57Run in base form converts to run in past participle form and in past participle form it again converts to
07:03run.
07:04So here were the examples of group 3.
07:07Let's look into group 4 examples.
07:10All three forms are different here.
07:14Break in base form becomes broke in past form and broken in past participle form.
07:21Go in base form becomes banked in past form and gone.
07:26Swim in past participle form becomes swam in past form and swam in past participle form.
07:36As you can understand from the examples, for an irregular verb there is no specific way to convert from base
07:43form to past and past participle form.
07:46So you will have to learn them.
