00:00Will and going to. In this video, we will learn the difference. We are going to learn the difference.
00:11Will and going to are both used to talk about the future. They can both be used to form simple
00:18future tense.
00:19For example, I think it will rain tomorrow. And, I think it is going to rain tomorrow.
00:28They are both used to talk about future events. So, what is the difference?
00:34Well, they are quite often used interchangeably, especially in spoken English.
00:40However, there are some general rules we can follow. Let's begin with when Will is used.
00:48Number 1. For quick decisions made in that moment.
00:52For example, look at those clouds. I'll take an umbrella.
00:58Or, great idea. I will ask Grace if she wants to come.
01:04Number 2. Will is used for promises, offers and threats.
01:09For example, I promise I will look after you.
01:13I'll feed your dog if you like.
01:17If you do that, I'll tell mum.
01:21Number 3. We use Will for habits or predictable behaviours.
01:27For example, he will be cranky when he wakes up from his nap.
01:33Number 4. Will is used for refusals.
01:37For example, Graham said he won't come out of his room.
01:43My dog won't stop whining until she gets fed.
01:48Note that I've used two contractions in these sentences.
01:52The first one, I'll, meaning I will.
01:56And the second, won't, meaning will not.
02:01Let's now look at scenarios, going to, is normally used.
02:06Number 1. Prior plans.
02:10We use going to, if we are talking about something we have already planned for,
02:15or decided to do in the future.
02:18For example, they are going to visit Egypt next month.
02:23I've decided I'm going to study medicine next year.
02:30Number 2. We use going to when something is about to happen at any moment.
02:36For example, look out, the branch is going to fall.
02:43Number 3. Going to is used when there is strong evidence or signs that something will happen.
02:50Here are some examples.
02:53It's starting to rain.
02:54It's going to be wet on the roads.
02:58I haven't been to the gym in a year.
03:01I'm going to be sore tomorrow.
03:05Now we've learnt some rules.
03:07It's time to practice applying them.
03:10Complete the following sentences, using will or going to, where appropriate.
03:16Pause here while you work.
03:19Let's see how you went.
03:22I'm busy tonight.
03:24I am going to play tennis.
03:27That lady just left her phone.
03:30I will take it back to her.
03:32Or, I'll take it back to her.
03:36I will drive him to school if you need.
03:40Get inside.
03:41The storm is going to hit any second.
03:45Look at all of this work.
03:47It is going to be a long day.
03:51I will be there for you always.
