The mystery behind a series of unusual thefts that had alarmed residents in Chamarajanagar has been solved, with police arresting a suspect involved in targeting women’s undergarments.

The accused, identified as Amruth, was apprehended by town police following complaints from multiple localities, including Indira Nagar, Housing Board Colony, and Karinjanapura.

Residents had reported that clothes left out to dry were being disturbed, but only women’s undergarments were going missing. Initially dismissed as items blown away by wind, the repeated pattern raised suspicion and led to police complaints.

During the investigation, police analysed CCTV footage, which showed a person moving suspiciously between 1 am and 3 am. The individual was seen entering residential lanes dressed in women’s clothing, with his face covered.

Based on these inputs, police launched a targeted operation and arrested the accused.

According to officials, Amruth would wait until residents were asleep, scale compound walls, steal undergarments, and flee. He allegedly used disguise to avoid identification while roaming deserted streets at night.

Police suspect possible mental health concerns due to the unusual nature of the acts and have initiated a medical and psychological evaluation of the accused.

During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the thefts. Investigators are now probing his motive and what he did with the stolen items, as the crimes do not appear to be financially driven.

With the arrest, residents have expressed relief, as the incidents had created fear and confusion, with some even attributing the acts to supernatural causes.
