00:00Hey, you guys.
00:02What's going on, guys?
00:04How you doing?
00:08Welcome, welcome, welcome to the K-Rock Sound Space.
00:11You guys are lucky bastards.
00:13Yes, you are.
00:15I'm Kevin Ryder.
00:16This is Megan Holiday.
00:17Yo, yo.
00:20So we're really excited because obviously this is a huge album release party for Canons for their album Everything Glows.
00:27Give it up for Everything Glows.
00:30Did you guys listen to the album?
00:31It's so good.
00:33It came out today.
00:34They're going to be touring a little bit later on and we're going to have them out to do a
00:38little interview and then they will play some music for you guys.
00:40That's a great Friday night.
00:41Yeah.
00:42All right.
00:43So should we do it?
00:44Let's do it.
00:46Welcome, Canons.
01:13All right.
01:18Welcome back, you guys.
01:20Hot mic.
01:21Yeah, this is a liability right here.
01:24Someone's going to die tonight.
01:25She's drunk.
01:26She's drunk everybody.
01:28The new album is out today.
01:34Tell us about Everything Glows.
01:37What do we need to know?
01:39All right.
01:39So Everything Glows is our fifth album.
01:42Yeah.
01:44Came out today.
01:45Thank you for being here with us to celebrate.
01:50Yeah.
01:50We've spent a lot of time working on it over the past year.
01:53And it's, I feel like it's our first album that we made it our full-time job.
01:59So it's like very intentional, start to finish, just everything about it.
02:05And if you like vinyl, we put so much time into like making sure it was super cohesive throughout the
02:13inserts, the everything.
02:14I'm just so proud of this album.
02:20So after, you guys did a very extensive tour for the last album, Harpy Highway.
02:26And, you know, I read that, you know, you kind of had to take a little time, needed a little
02:31space to sort of get yourself mentally and physically back.
02:35And so what was that period like?
02:37And then when did you feel inspired to, hey, let's start writing some music again?
02:42Yeah.
02:42So, yes, we, we did a lot of touring past couple of years.
02:48And after Harpy Highway, we came home and we were all exhausted.
02:55Yeah.
02:56Of course.
02:57Pretty burnt out.
02:58So, uh, I just hadn't, uh, I mean, yeah, of course I've never toured like that in my life.
03:05I didn't know what I was getting into.
03:07Sure.
03:07Right?
03:07So it was a learning experience.
03:09I had to learn the hard way, um, that I was pretty sick.
03:12I needed to take care of my health.
03:14I needed to, um, I had, you know, I was anemic.
03:18I had no oxygen.
03:20Really?
03:21Okay.
03:21So this is.
03:22It's hard.
03:23I'm going to say, dedicate this album to anyone and all the anemic girlies out there.
03:28All the anemic people out there with no energy.
03:32Exactly.
03:33The worst part is though, not knowing that you have anything wrong with you and thinking
03:39it's just you.
03:40So then there's a lot of, there's a lot of like feelings that I had.
03:46I'm like, is it just me?
03:48Like, am I being a baby?
03:49And you felt that way.
03:50Sure.
03:51Yeah.
03:51So it was honestly, you know, kind of a relief to find out that, oh, my hemoglobin's low.
03:57All these things that I didn't know.
03:59Shout out to hemoglobin.
04:00It's my favorite basketball team.
04:01To hemoglobin.
04:02It's bad.
04:04Yes.
04:05The doctor told me I had no, barely any oxygen going to my brain when I was performing in
04:09the last four.
04:09Oh my God.
04:10That's crazy.
04:11No iron.
04:11Nothing.
04:12I didn't know how I was doing it.
04:13I will say.
04:14I wish I had a doctor to tell me that.
04:15Yes.
04:15That would excuse a lot of problems.
04:17It really would.
04:18It really would.
04:18I was out of breath and singing every night.
04:20But there's like adrenaline that I think every time I stepped onto stage, I was, you
04:25know, I'm so grateful for this job.
04:27I love what we do.
04:29So that got me through the tour.
04:31But when I got home, I just couldn't function.
04:33And but I knew we had to write an album.
04:38So, yeah, I took care of my health.
04:41I had to get a surgery.
04:43The guys, you know, were incredibly like patient and amazing.
04:47And there's this process.
04:49Which one was less patient of the two of them?
04:52To be honest.
04:54They can't both be the great ones.
04:55Paul was whole.
04:57I'm just kidding.
04:59Oh, no.
05:00Get off of that table.
05:02No, they were equally incredible.
05:05Like they made me feel so supported.
05:08And we this album, we've grown closer than ever.
05:13And like we understand each other in new ways, know how to hold space for each other and
05:18bring out the best in each other.
05:20And we wouldn't have reached this point in our relationship together without going through
05:26the struggles that we went through last year before we started writing it.
05:30And then, you know, in the beginning of writing it, we had to just reassess the way we work,
05:36our entire team, and rebuild things in a way that would work for us and create longevity
05:44for Canons.
05:46Did you write a lot of songs?
05:48Are you a band that writes a lot of songs and then whittles it down?
05:52Or do you write ten songs and...
05:54Oh, no, no, no.
05:55I mean, there's lots of songs.
05:57There's hundreds of demos.
05:59There's so much.
06:01There's finished songs.
06:02There's at least five completely finished produced songs.
06:05And you just said it's not for this album?
06:07Just not for this album.
06:08And we love them.
06:09Maybe later.
06:09Yeah, there's a lot.
06:10So maybe for the next album then.
06:12Exactly.
06:12Wow.
06:13Or maybe a surprise EP.
06:15I don't know.
06:16I remember a while ago, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like I saw you guys
06:20post that you were recording at Sunset Sound.
06:23So that's a very iconic place.
06:25You know, you have like Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine,
06:30Beach Boys.
06:31So what was it like recording in this amazing, iconic studio?
06:34Was there an energy?
06:35We didn't see any of them.
06:37Damn it.
06:39They didn't visit?
06:40I felt them.
06:40I felt them in the room.
06:41You felt them?
06:42It was cool because we, you know, we're on a major label, so we're like, let's use some
06:47of these major label resources.
06:49And we got an orchestra, like a six-peak orchestra to play on at least four of our tracks on
06:56this
06:56record.
06:57That's very cool.
06:58And they hooked us up in Sunset Studios.
07:01Since it sounds, I'm sorry.
07:03But yeah, it was just fun to see like a whole orchestra.
07:06I just like.
07:06How do you guys write?
07:07Do you write music first and then lyrics or the other way around?
07:10Yep.
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:11Music first and then lyrics.
07:12I gave you two options.
07:13Great job.
07:15Music first.
07:16Yeah, yeah.
07:17Who's the perfectionist in the studio?
07:21And then who makes the final call?
07:23Probably me.
07:24That's, yeah.
07:24It's Paul?
07:25That's Paul.
07:26Paul.
07:26And how do you know when the song is done?
07:28I don't.
07:29Okay.
07:29It's a never-ending thing.
07:32And like, to this day, that there is still some tracks that we've made where I'm like,
07:36I wish I did.
07:37Just turn those guitar down maybe a little bit more.
07:40Ryan needed to be out.
07:43Ryan would you do that?
07:45Try to cut him out a little.
07:47Is that your goal?
07:48Just a little bit.
07:50Who's always late to the studio?
07:52Michelle.
07:53Oh!
07:54I'm going to tell you, I'm going to be honest with you.
07:56I have time blindness.
07:57It's really bad.
07:58Not just the studio.
07:59It's, but that's another thing.
08:01They've been so patient with me in this, because like, I, you know, I have time blindness.
08:06I have ADHD.
08:07I try the hardest that I can to get places on time.
08:11And I also have a little bit of perfectionism in different ways.
08:15It's hard to get out the door.
08:18Her hair doesn't fit through the door anymore.
08:20It looks so good.
08:23Yeah.
08:23And what's your, your guys' favorite snacks on tour?
08:28And is that going to have to change?
08:29Mm-hmm.
08:30I know, with iron.
08:32Yeah.
08:32Now you need iron fuel and stuff.
08:33I don't think we're calling her iron.
08:35I'll take it.
08:36Okay.
08:37Iron girl.
08:38I like a good cheese and cracker.
08:40Cheese and cracker?
08:41Okay.
08:42We were, we were pretty into Uncrustables for a little bit.
08:45Oh!
08:46Oh my God!
08:46Love.
08:47Yeah.
08:47I was making his own from scratch.
08:49We, we, we actually did get an Uncrustable maker and we were making them from scratch
08:53for a little bit.
08:54But then I thought, why am I doing this when they're so good out of the box?
08:57That's true.
08:58And I'm making a mess too.
08:59But yeah, Uncrustables were pretty good.
09:01I'm a little boring.
09:03I've got a, I just got a little, um, portable blender so I can make my protein drinks.
09:08Yes.
09:08So, yeah.
09:09It's not that fun, but I can, you know, almond butter.
09:13She's also a really fantastic sandwich artist.
09:15It's true.
09:17Yeah.
09:17A sandwich artist?
09:18Yeah.
09:18Yeah.
09:19That's what she told me to call her.
09:20Okay.
09:20It's fine.
09:21I think that's what they call them at Subway.
09:22I'm pretty sure.
09:23Well, I've made, it's true.
09:25I know because I did work at Subway at one point.
09:29I worked at, I worked at a whole bunch of cafes and sandwich shops.
09:33You made me a sandwich and you looked at me and you're like, artiste, sandwich artiste.
09:38They didn't know what they were in for.
09:40Yeah, yeah.
09:40I can make it really good.
09:42Really, really good.
09:44Sandwich and cookies are my specialty.
09:46Tell us about your tour.
09:48You're going to go back on tour.
09:49Yeah.
09:50The after tour tour.
09:51Yes.
09:51Next week.
09:53We're leaving next, oh, 31st, right?
09:55March 31st.
09:56Sure.
09:57Yeah.
09:57Source in Arizona.
09:58With Bob Moses?
09:58Yes.
09:59With Bob Moses.
10:00I'm really excited.
10:02You know, it's, I'm actually, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm,
10:07I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm,
10:33it was two years ago when was it he has time blindness too being in a band will do that
10:41to
10:41you like a year ago now yeah but yeah our first um co-headline uh show so do you guys
10:49switch off
10:50then every night of who uh no we kind of just decided early on that uh we wanted to play
10:56first
10:56okay so we can good information to know all right the show oxygen goes out first
11:05you have an emt come with you maybe i should just constantly have an ivy drip bag you know
11:12filled with vitamins i'll be good i made sure to go to the doctor first and get my everything
11:17checked up that we use in colorado oh yeah it's true i don't even know how i played over there
11:22wow wait what what things in colorado you know the air is kind of thin up there so you gotta
11:27get these little like oh the little oxygen mask that mask is like a little canister it's like
11:32oh i've seen them six thousand feet above sea level so it's really hard to breathe i think
11:36that's what we're healing giving me something else it's just whippets i don't know is it was it
11:45impossible for you to perform you didn't have oxygen going to your brain at normal levels i don't know
11:51how i i don't know how i finished touring i really wonder but adrenaline is an amazing thing
11:58yes well you're a badass i love what i do absolutely badass seriously
12:05this album is absolutely incredible and was there a song that you guys wrote and you just thought okay
12:11this is the vibe that we are going for that's going to set the tone for everything glows
12:17one specific one i don't know what are your thoughts i don't think there's a specific tone
12:22but i really do like the the back side of the album i feel like uh it's like the the
12:27more emotional
12:27tracks the tracks that pull on your heartstrings a little bit more slower songs the kind of songs
12:32that i like but i don't know yeah it's difficult because i feel like there's so many songs on this
12:37album that they're all so different it's so cohesive but also they have their own special place um
12:44on it and i i can't even choose my favorite it's changing every every week yeah when you guys play
12:54the
12:54songs do you ever make what little changes you wish you had made in the studio do you ever change
13:00it up
13:00when you're doing it live every time yeah i think mostly ryan like i always notice little
13:06funky guitar parts you start because he's always turning them down in the mix right
13:11or getting rid of them yeah yeah definitely i feel like our live shows um i have a little bit
13:16more
13:16room for improvisation now and so there's things that we'll throw uh in the live situation that we
13:22couldn't on the album or it's just like an afterthought it came came out when we were rehearsing or
13:26you know in a live situation which i think makes the show fun it makes it dynamic yeah great i
13:32love
13:32that i love that anytime bands do that where they mix it up and change things even just a little
13:37bit
13:37from the album that makes it so much better well this is a great day for you guys and we
13:42are thrilled
13:43to share it with you
13:50the album is everything glows and canons are going to step off and then they're going to come back
13:55and perform live thank you
13:57the album is everything glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows
13:59and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons
14:02glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and canons glows and
