A major controversy broke out at a sub-health centre in Gharaunda, Karnal district of Haryana, where a pregnant woman allegedly faced assault during a visit to get her ANC (health) card made.

According to the complainants, the incident took place on Thursday when locals, including Ruchin Goyal and Kuldeep, had come with their relatives—both pregnant women—to the centre for documentation. They alleged that the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) present at the facility was initially absent and later arrived in an agitated state, refusing to process the cards and engaging in an argument.

The situation soon escalated into a physical altercation. The family alleged that the ANM picked up a stick and attacked them, during which one pregnant woman was hit on the hand. They further claimed that when they started recording the incident, the ANM became more aggressive, slapped a youth who intervened, scratched faces, and attempted to snatch a mobile phone.

The complainants also stated that they had been visiting the centre for several days to get the card made but were repeatedly turned away.

However, the accused ANM, Mamta Rani, has denied all allegations, calling them baseless. She claimed that the patient’s family misbehaved, pushed her, and even scratched her. According to her, she picked up the stick in self-defence and did not attack anyone. She also alleged that she was threatened and has filed a counter-complaint with the police.

A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing a heated argument and scuffle inside the health centre.

Gharaunda Police confirmed that complaints have been received from both sides and an investigation is underway. Health department officials have also taken cognisance, with senior authorities reviewing the matter.

The incident has raised concerns over safety and conduct at public health facilities.
