A shocking daylight robbery in Ayodhya’s Rudauli Kotwali area has raised serious concerns over public safety after a woman, posing as a customer, looted a jewellery shop at gunpoint and fled with her accomplice.

The incident took place around 12:30 pm on Thursday at Mahesh Jewellers in Agarwal Complex. The accused woman, dressed in a burqa and carrying a bag, entered the shop and asked to see a gold necklace and chain. She behaved normally, arousing no suspicion.

To execute the theft, she cleverly distracted the shop staff. She first asked for water, refused samosas, and then demanded sweets, sending employees out on errands. Taking advantage of the distraction, she quickly placed around 26 grams of gold jewellery, worth approximately ₹3.6 lakh, into her bag.

When the shopkeeper grew suspicious and tried to stop her, she pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot him. Terrified, no one intervened. The woman then fled the shop, where her accomplice was already waiting on a motorcycle. Despite attempts by the shopkeeper and locals to chase them, the duo managed to escape.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, following which police scanned footage from over 50 cameras and launched a search operation. The area was briefly cordoned off, and teams were formed to trace the accused.

In a later development, police identified and arrested the accused. The woman, identified as Payal (25), and her accomplice Rahul were taken into custody. Police revealed that the pistol used in the robbery was a toy gun. Payal, who is married and resides in Punjab, had come to Ayodhya to appear for her UP Board Class 12 exams. The burqa and fake weapon were reportedly purchased by Rahul to carry out the crime.

Police confirmed that both accused have been apprehended and further investigation is underway.
