A dramatic scene unfolded in Prayagraj when a woman allegedly thrashed a young man with slippers in a busy market after accusing him of cheating her family of ₹4 lakh on the pretext of securing a job.

The incident took place on Monday (30 March 2026) afternoon at the Naini Meva Lal Bagiya intersection. The accused, identified as Anoop Pandey, had allegedly taken money in instalments from the victim’s family over two years, promising a job in the Agriculture Department but neither fulfilling the promise nor returning the amount.

According to the complainant, Ritu Tiwari, her husband Brajesh Tiwari, an e-rickshaw driver, had met the accused earlier, leading to repeated financial transactions based on job assurances. Over time, the accused reportedly stopped answering calls and avoided contact.

On spotting him at the intersection, the woman confronted him and demanded her money back. The accused allegedly tried to evade the situation by asking for a barcode and fled when she took out her phone. Alerted by her cries, locals chased and caught him.

Amid the commotion, the woman began hitting him with slippers in full public view, leading to a temporary road blockade as a crowd gathered.

Police reached the spot and took the accused into custody. A panchayat was held at the police station for nearly an hour before further proceedings.

Sunil Kumar Singh stated that the accused has been detained and the matter is under investigation.

The victim’s family has alleged prolonged harassment over the unpaid money and demanded strict action.
