A shocking case of alleged arson unfolded near the Orissa High Court in Cuttack on Tuesday (31 March 2026), where a 40-year-old woman reportedly set multiple vehicles on fire, claiming she wanted to draw the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The accused, identified as Minati Sahu from Jagatsinghpur district, has been detained by police. According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:45 am outside the High Court gate, where she allegedly poured petrol on parked vehicles and set them ablaze.

The fire reportedly started with an electric vehicle and quickly spread to nearby motorcycles and an SUV. Thick smoke filled the area, triggering panic in the busy Chandni Chowk locality, with shops shutting down and people rushing to safety.

Fire services personnel present at the premises immediately attempted to control the blaze using extinguishers, while additional fire tenders later brought the situation under control. No injuries were reported.

Initially suspected to be a short circuit, the case took a serious turn after CCTV footage confirmed it was a deliberate act. The visuals allegedly show the woman pouring a flammable substance before igniting the vehicles. The footage is now a key part of the investigation.

During interrogation, Sahu reportedly admitted to the act, stating she wanted to highlight an issue directly to the Prime Minister. She also made claims of being “possessed by Goddess Durga” at the time, prompting police to suspect mental health concerns.

A minor child, believed to be around five years old, was reportedly with her during the incident.

Police have produced the accused before a court and initiated a detailed probe. Officials confirmed she is undergoing psychiatric evaluation, while further legal action is being pursued.

The incident has raised serious concerns over security arrangements in sensitive zones like court premises.
