00:01:46We're here outside Madison Square Garden for the 1979 World Karate Championships.
00:01:51To my right, one of the key organizers of the event, Aaron Banks,
00:01:55who, earlier in the week, created great controversy with his startling new remarks about the death of Bruce Lee.
00:02:02Aaron, I wonder if you'd mind repeating some of your remarks for our TV audience.
00:02:06Well, I believe Bruce Lee was murdered by something called the Touch of Death or the Vibrating Pond.
00:02:11This is where a person can touch somebody in a particular area of their body
00:02:14in a way that can reverse or change the normal bodily functions.
00:02:18The result is that within three or four weeks, the person will drop dead.
00:02:23So, somebody was out to get Bruce.
00:02:26I think so.
00:02:26Perhaps he just was revealing too much of the Chinese martial arts.
00:02:30You know, like taking the mystery out of it all.
00:02:33The secret of karate is power.
00:02:36Internal power from the ear.
00:02:39The Vibrating Pond.
00:02:40How does it work?
00:02:42It's internal power.
00:02:44The Chinese scriptures call it the chi.
00:02:46The Japanese call it the ki.
00:02:47It's heat that emanates from the palm right here.
00:02:50I see.
00:02:51And this palm is simply placed against any portion of the body,
00:02:55and death will result in three to four weeks.
00:02:57Yes, it could, and no one would know what happened to the individual as in the Bruce Lee case.
00:03:01Corner there put the cause of death as misadventure.
00:03:04Now, all misadventure means is that they really don't know what happened to the man.
00:03:08The one thing we do know is that Bruce was in too good of condition to die of natural causes.
00:03:12And it wouldn't have been a freak injury because he knew exactly where he was,
00:03:16what he was doing in terms of exercise.
00:03:17Now, what portion of the body is this palm placed upon?
00:03:21Could be any part.
00:03:22That's the Uri think about it.
00:03:24It all depends on how strong the applied power is.
00:03:27Tell me something, Aaron.
00:03:28Are you able to do this?
00:03:29I'd like to think so.
00:03:31Before he died, Bruce was experimenting with it and showed me the basic principle.
00:03:40Are you saying, then, that Bruce was starting to find out too much about the vibrating palm
00:03:46and therefore had to be silenced?
00:03:48Something like that.
00:03:50One last question.
00:03:52Who do you think killed Bruce Lee?
00:03:54I really don't know.
00:03:56Uh, Aaron.
00:03:57Aaron.
00:04:02This is Adolf Caesar, outside Madison Square Garden for the 1979 World Karate Championships.
00:04:15The touch of death is positive energy emanating from the palm of the hand.
00:04:20The fuck is that you are here.
00:04:24The fuck is that you are here.
00:04:31The fuck is that you are here.
00:04:58¡Gracias!
00:05:25¡Gracias!
00:05:48...a long way in determining the eventual successor to Bruce Lee.
00:05:52However, not everyone here agrees with that assumption.
00:05:56And tonight and during the course of this show, we'll talk to many guests who feel no one has a
00:06:02right to claim Bruce's King of Kung Fu title.
00:06:05So stay with us. It should be a fascinating evening.
00:06:09But before I go any further, let me say a word about the extra special significance of tonight's competition.
00:06:15Last week, the tournament sponsors announced that they were dedicating this event to the memory and the martial arts legacy
00:06:23of Bruce Lee.
00:06:24Bruce Lee, perhaps the greatest karate expert of them all.
00:06:28Certainly the most influential.
00:06:30In fact, many of the guests here tonight owe their skills to Bruce's dedicated training methods and his inspirational leadership.
00:06:39So you better believe they'll be out there tonight giving their something extra in honor of their mentor.
00:06:45Shortly before he died, I did a series of interviews with Bruce.
00:06:50And in them, they show something of his philosophy of life and the martial arts.
00:06:56They also reveal what a special person he was.
00:06:59In this first one, he talks about the mind in martial arts.
00:07:04You must realize that 90% of the martial arts is mental agility and that your body is a weapon
00:07:11that can kill a man.
00:07:14Therefore, you must use this mental power to control your actions.
00:07:19So you're saying that the mind must be trained and conditioned as well as the body.
00:07:23The mind must be cultivated so you can eventually know yourself.
00:07:30Well, how do you cultivate your mind?
00:07:33Mental exercises.
00:07:35Such as what?
00:07:36Yoga.
00:07:39And even Zen.
00:07:41Meditation helps.
00:07:43Then you're performing almost a sort of self-hypnosis.
00:07:47You make it sound so, so mysterious and elusive.
00:07:53But it's really not like that at all.
00:07:56Well, would you mind elaborating more on that?
00:07:59It's making the mind respond instinctively.
00:08:02You do this by eliminating all variables and behavior.
00:08:06Well, why are all these variables bad?
00:08:09They're too unpredictable.
00:08:11Well, that should make it interesting.
00:08:13Such risks are counterproductive to everything you're trying to do.
00:08:20Now, as I mentioned earlier, we have a title bout in the welterweight division later on.
00:08:24However, early in this week, a note of controversy attached itself to this match as well as Bruce Lee himself.
00:08:31Aaron Banks, Mr. Karate, and a key organizer of tonight's match raised new questions about Bruce's death in a series
00:08:38of interviews he gave this reporter, among others.
00:08:42His remarks not only enraged Bruce's friends, but also the managers of the two fighters who are fighting tonight here
00:08:49for the championship.
00:08:50They were furious because Banks later went on to imply that the touch of death would kill any heir apparent
00:08:57of Bruce, just as it did himself.
00:08:58They called it a trick to publicize the event and castigated Banks for worrying their fighters on the eve of
00:09:05the match with what amounts to a death threat.
00:09:09Recently, Banks demonstrated to this reporter the basic principle behind the touch of death.
00:09:16This is very difficult to do.
00:09:18It's not the kind of thing you get right away.
00:09:21The problem is you have to generate power from such a short distance and really can't depend on any momentum.
00:09:27You've got to concentrate.
00:09:30Concentration is everything.
00:09:32So there we have it, ladies and gentlemen.
00:09:34The stage is set.
00:09:35And tonight, we'll have the answers to these questions.
00:09:39Who will be Bruce Lee's successor?
00:09:42And will he meet the same fate as Bruce?
00:09:45A fate which Aaron Banks calls the touch of death.
00:09:50We'll talk more about this later on.
00:09:52But first, let's take another look at a remarkable bout from the past.
00:09:57This one hits Badass Bonnie Lee against Fred the Flying Fat Man.
00:10:03The Flying Fat Man sure lives up to his name.
00:10:06This is a community or free sparring match where the object is to score points by means of unobstructed areas
00:10:13on an opponent's body.
00:10:17Like there.
00:10:18And believe you me, you can't get much more specific than that.
00:10:22And just behind me, down by ringside, is Fred Williamson.
00:10:26Looks like he's having a little trouble with his fans.
00:10:29I wish I had that kind of trouble.
00:10:30But seriously, folks, Fred will be with us later on to talk about his feelings towards Bruce Lee and also
00:10:36this event.
00:10:37So be sure to stay with us for that.
00:10:39Old Fred almost didn't make it here.
00:10:41It's quite a story.
00:10:43How much time do we have?
00:10:44Five minutes?
00:10:45Okay, let me divert for a second and tell you about it.
00:10:48It all started around 10 a.m. this morning.
00:11:14Your 10 o'clock wake-up call, Mr. Belafonte.
00:11:19What?
00:11:21It's 10 o'clock, Mr. Belafonte.
00:11:23Time to get up.
00:11:2610 o'clock.
00:11:30The wake-up call was for 8 o'clock, not 10 o'clock.
00:11:37My name is not Belafonte.
00:11:40It's Fred Williamson.
00:11:49Two hours late.
00:11:52Damn.
00:11:57That's what I'm paying $200 a day for, huh?
00:12:02I got to be downtown in 20 minutes.
00:12:07Fred, forget about it and get back under the covers.
00:12:12Yeah, that's a nice idea, baby, but I got to get moving.
00:12:16But why?
00:12:17It's just a karate match.
00:12:20Yeah.
00:12:21That's all it is, all right, just a karate match.
00:12:24Somebody's got to be there to keep reminding him that that's all it is, just a karate match.
00:12:28I mean, who ever heard of fighting for a Bruce Lee title that don't even exist?
00:12:33Besides, I promised I'd do that.
00:12:35You've broken promises before.
00:12:38Last night, you promised you'd satisfy me.
00:12:41And here I am, still wanting.
00:12:47Wanting what?
00:12:48I mean, ain't five times enough for you?
00:12:50Oh, Fred, let's make it a six-pack.
00:12:53Yeah, I'll call room service and get one.
00:12:56Please.
00:12:59Well, I guess they can wait.
00:13:02From Columbia Records.
00:13:04Belafonte is back with his dynamite new album, Reggae Riot.
00:13:09Listen to that Belafonte sound.
00:13:19Patsy, Patsy.
00:13:22If you don't mind, man, I'm in a hurry.
00:13:26This is my cab.
00:13:27I was here first.
00:13:31Look, I know you're Harry Belafonte and all that, but so what?
00:13:34I'm Jasper Milquetoast.
00:13:36Oh, hey, put me down.
00:13:38What do you think this is?
00:13:39Come on, square.
00:13:39Harry, milk toast.
00:13:41Come on.
00:13:42I am not Belafonte.
00:13:44I am Fred Williamson.
00:13:46Oh!
00:13:51Eat me of people in New York.
00:13:53I gotta pick Fred Williamson to start a fight with, huh?
00:13:59Shit.
00:14:02Oh, fettlesticks.
00:14:03Well, I'll just have to walk to Plato's retreat.
00:14:10Hey, Fred.
00:14:11Need a lift.
00:14:22Thanks, my man.
00:14:23All right.
00:14:24This isn't my day.
00:14:26Hmm?
00:14:27First, the hotel doesn't wake me up on time.
00:14:29I can't find a cab, but some clown tries to pick a fight with me.
00:14:34Well, I'm a little late myself, but nothing short of a death in the family is gonna make
00:14:39me miss this event.
00:14:41Yeah, some event.
00:14:43Two cats fighting for Bruce Lee's title that don't even exist.
00:14:46I mean, that's kind of absurd, isn't it?
00:14:48Look, Fred, I just work for the TV networks.
00:14:51I don't have anything to do with it.
00:14:53I just call it like I see it.
00:14:54Yeah.
00:14:55Anything for high ratings, huh?
00:14:57I mean, if they want high ratings, why don't they just put me in the ring with you?
00:15:02Save your anger for the TV cameras.
00:15:04I'd like to get all of that in my interview.
00:15:06No, it's not an anger.
00:15:07It's just professional concern.
00:15:09But don't worry.
00:15:10When the cameras roll, so will I.
00:15:13Well, put on your charisma, my man.
00:15:16Your fans are waiting.
00:15:23We'll be right back.
00:16:17We'll be right back.
00:16:27Wow, Harry Belafonte.
00:16:30But he made it, despite 101 obstacles and distractions which would have deterred any less determined
00:16:36man.
00:16:37So you better believe he's really psyched up for tonight's competition.
00:16:41And hold it.
00:16:42Hold it just a second.
00:16:43There's a little commotion around here.
00:16:44I think I better.
00:16:45Yes, I do believe Bill Louie has just entered into the arena.
00:16:49Let's see if we can pick him up on one of our remote cameras.
00:16:52Bill Louie.
00:16:53He's quite a showman.
00:16:54And the crowd really loves him.
00:16:56And with good reason, too.
00:16:58For he's one of our most exciting martial artists.
00:17:02Here he is in a demonstration from last year's event.
00:17:06Many people think of Bill as a possible successor to Bruce Lee because of the strong physical
00:17:12resemblance and Bill's mastery of the Lee fighting form.
00:17:15But don't let that fool you.
00:17:17Bill's his own man with his own particular martial arts style.
00:17:21Notice, for example, the lightning quick use of hands and feet.
00:17:25Karate fans, watch this man.
00:17:27He could be number one before long.
00:17:29He certainly ranks up there on my list of karate champions.
00:17:34And now a action treat for our television audiences.
00:17:37An exclusive interview with international film star and martial arts magician Ron Van Cleef.
00:17:43Live from the gym here in New York, where Ron is currently training in future defense of
00:17:47his World Karate Championship.
00:17:50Ron, can you hear me?
00:17:52Good.
00:17:54Who would you say has been the most influential person in your life?
00:17:58Bruce Lee.
00:17:59I met him in 1969 at the National Championship.
00:18:04He gave an exhibition.
00:18:06We talked about martial arts.
00:18:09He introduced me to the Chinese style, which developed my fluidity and flexibility.
00:18:17He also got me into movies.
00:18:21I met him in Hong Kong when he was doing Enter the Dragon.
00:18:30We became good friends and brother martial arts.
00:18:34And you've come a long way since then.
00:18:36I've been world champion three times.
00:18:38Twice as a middleweight and once as a light heavyweight.
00:18:47I've also won 20 tournaments a year as a black belt.
00:18:49Now, Ron, tell me, how did you get started doing this sort of thing?
00:18:54Martial arts, that is.
00:18:55I've been involved in martial arts since 1955.
00:18:59My father taught me judo and boxing.
00:19:03One day I came home with a black eye and he told me, you better learn how to defend yourself,
00:19:08son.
00:19:08One of the striking similarities between the two of you is the dedication you both have
00:19:13toward training and building up your body.
00:19:15How many hours a day do you work out?
00:19:17I train five hours a day, seven days a week.
00:19:21I do a thousand punches and kicks on the heavy bag every day.
00:19:28Rigorous exercise is a must if your body is to be a weapon.
00:19:34You know, Ron, the question is often asked about him that if he had lived, would he have
00:19:39been as great in action film stars, say Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson?
00:19:44Do you think he would have?
00:19:46Possibly, but I don't think so.
00:19:49He was really interested in television.
00:19:51He wanted to get on another television series.
00:19:54Tell me, do you think there will ever be anyone like Bruce Lee in terms of approaching his
00:19:59popularity?
00:20:01I don't think anyone would be as popular as Bruce Lee.
00:20:04He was the prototype.
00:20:06Everyone else is an imitation.
00:20:08I think everyone should develop their own style, an individual style.
00:20:13One last question, Ron.
00:20:16Do you think Bruce Lee died of natural causes?
00:20:19No way.
00:20:21The blow he received in the head could have been caught by any technique of swelling.
00:20:32I believe he was murdered.
00:20:34Thank you, Ron.
00:20:35This has been a most interesting conversation.
00:20:37But before we return to our matches, though, I wonder if you could show us another demonstration
00:20:42of your skill.
00:20:44The next beat is what I call the test of courage.
00:20:49I place two carrots on the necks of two of my students, and I will attempt to cut these
00:20:55carrots without cutting their heads off.
00:20:58Well, this should be something else.
00:21:01Are you ready?
00:21:02Yeah.
00:21:09Incredible, Ron.
00:21:10Absolutely incredible.
00:21:12Would you mind doing that trick again?
00:21:14I'm sure it was so fast, some of our TV audiences missed it.
00:21:20Amazing.
00:21:23Ron is a complete athlete who practices his karate magic on the street as well as in the gym.
00:21:28Ron Van Cleef is total karate.
00:21:36Look at her move.
00:21:38She's got glass in the air.
00:21:39Hey, baby, what you doing later?
00:21:41Wow, mommy, stop wearing eyes.
00:21:43Yeah.
00:21:44Hey, baby.
00:21:48Hey, babe, wait up.
00:21:50Girls like that are only good for one thing.
00:21:52God, they ain't talking.
00:21:54That's the tightest little ass I've ever seen.
00:21:57She's good for only one thing.
00:21:58Hey, baby, wait up, bro.
00:22:00Hey, baby, wait up, baby.
00:22:03Come on.
00:22:06Hey, baby, wait up.
00:22:08Come on.
00:22:08Hey, who's this motherfucker?
00:22:11These guys barblin' you?
00:22:12He ain't gonna get her if we saw the person.
00:22:30How can I ever repay you?
00:22:33I'm sure Ron has some ideas of his own.
00:22:37But now let's go to the halftime show I promised you.
00:22:40The Bruce Lee Story.
00:22:44As you've heard me mention, I was the first to spot Bruce Lee's talent.
00:22:48But if the truth be told, there were many signs of Bruce's ability long before I came on the scene.
00:22:53First, of course, there was the hereditary factor.
00:22:57Bruce's great-grandfather was one of China's greatest samurai master swordsmen of the 19th century.
00:23:02A fact which takes on greater significance when one realizes that Bruce was not only born under the same astrological
00:23:09sign as his great-grandfather, but that he was born on the same day also.
00:23:14As a result, his birth itself was an omen.
00:23:18An omen that became harder to disassociate himself from as he grew up reading stories of his great ancestors' legendary
00:23:24heroics.
00:23:25Heroics that could not fail to influence a young boy's mind.
00:23:32Poesh!
00:23:42Poesh!
00:23:50Poeh!
00:23:50Poeh!
00:23:51Poeh!
00:24:05Ah
00:24:27Ah
00:24:55Ah
00:25:41His lifelong obsession with martial arts
00:25:44An obsession that arose from romanticizing his ancestors
00:25:47Began to disturb his family
00:25:49The result was a confrontation
00:25:51Shortly after his 18th birthday
00:25:54When his older brother returned home to visit
00:25:56After a long absence
00:26:04Welcome home, Master Lee
00:26:06Things haven't been the same since you've left
00:26:09Park the car around the back, okay?
00:26:21Yesterday I learned some terrific maneuvers in karate class, Sue
00:26:25Hey, Bruce
00:26:26Bruce
00:26:28Jack
00:26:29Sue, it's my brother
00:26:30He's come home
00:26:31Jack
00:26:34It looks like he's been training again
00:26:38Ah, yes, he practices every day
00:26:40Kung fu is his whole life
00:26:42It worries your mother very, very much
00:26:44She doesn't know what to do
00:26:46No kidding
00:27:15Here's your keys
00:27:17Just let me say hello to Mom
00:27:25There's Mom
00:27:41I told you he'd come back, Mom
00:27:44He must have forgot something
00:27:46Perhaps his family
00:27:47Please
00:27:52It wasn't nice
00:27:53To run away the way you did
00:27:57I know
00:27:59Tell me
00:28:00Do you know what your brother's done while you were away?
00:28:03Yes, he told me
00:28:08More karate lessons
00:28:10Mother
00:28:11Why are you so upset over my happiness?
00:28:14Ah
00:28:15Your brother has some explaining to do
00:28:18No brother
00:28:21Well, whose fault was it?
00:28:24Nobody's
00:28:25You have a short memory
00:28:27Who was it that plastered his walls with karate posters?
00:28:31I don't believe this
00:28:33Boy
00:28:42Don't let her bug you
00:28:44She does this to me all the time
00:28:47No kidding
00:28:48She doesn't know when to stop
00:28:50And Pop's just as bad
00:28:52I think they both enjoy it
00:28:54Bruce
00:28:55How can you say that?
00:28:57Your mother still deserves some respect
00:29:02Nothing's changed
00:29:09Boy, it's great to have him back, isn't it?
00:29:14Ma
00:29:15Are you feeling okay?
00:29:22I wish you'd look at this from my side
00:29:26We're lucky to be the heirs of a great fighting tradition
00:29:31I just want to follow
00:29:32In their footsteps
00:29:36And get yourself killed
00:29:39Ma
00:29:41Karate is our family tradition
00:29:43Just like our business
00:29:44Besides
00:29:46It's much more exciting
00:29:47I'm sure that's just how his great-grandfather felt in his days of glory
00:30:10I think it's mine
00:30:11I don't wanna see
00:30:16I feel like a wife

00:35:26Why don't we run away, Sue?
00:35:28I had a hard enough time sneaking off to meet you tonight.
00:35:31My brother doesn't like you.
00:35:32He thinks you should get a job.
00:35:40Sue!
00:35:40Sue!
00:35:41Wait a second.
00:35:44Please, Bruce, not now.
00:35:47Sue, I have tickets to the karate matches.
00:35:49Don't you want to go with me?
00:35:52I've saved plenty of money.
00:35:55No.
00:35:56Keep your money.
00:35:57Use it for your karate lessons.
00:35:59Oh, this is for you.
00:36:03Well, I was wrong.
00:36:05I'm sorry.
00:36:07It's been very selfish of me.
00:36:09Please forgive me.
00:36:11Oh, Bruce.
00:36:12I know that I'm no longer the most important thing in your life.
00:36:17Please, Sue, don't force me to make a choice.
00:36:20Please, let's not discuss it anymore.
00:36:22But, Sue, we've got to have an understanding once and for all.
00:36:26Hey, Bruce.
00:36:27Come over here.
00:36:27I want to talk to you.
00:36:34Stay out of this.
00:36:36It's none of your business.
00:36:37Bruce, you're asking for a fat lip.
00:36:39Come on.
00:36:41Cut it out.
00:36:42If you had some intelligence, you'd drop this guy.
00:36:44He's karate crazy.
00:36:49Wait a second.
00:36:50I know how you feel.
00:36:52I do sound a little crazy.
00:36:54But I love Sue and don't want to hurt her.
00:36:57I'll make good one day.
00:36:59You have to be patient.
00:37:00Give me a chance and I'll show you what I'm made of.
00:37:04We've been patient.
00:37:06We've put up with this karate talk long enough.
00:37:09Now, when are you going to go out and get yourself a good job?
00:37:12You can't break boards for a living.
00:37:15It doesn't pay.
00:37:16Ask anyone.
00:37:17But you have it all wrong.
00:37:19Oh, so I'm wrong?
00:37:21How much can you make?
00:37:22Can you support a wife and several children?
00:37:25Hey, you haven't finished high school.
00:37:27You have no skills.
00:37:28You have no training.
00:37:29You can't do anything.
00:37:32Sue's got to be crazy.
00:37:34Why did she waste her time with a guy like you?
00:37:37You're a no good lazy bum.
00:37:39You think you're such a smart guy.
00:37:42Fog off.
00:37:42You're asking for it.
00:37:44You're nuts.
00:37:45Listen, I'm saying this for the first and last time.
00:37:48If I ever catch you talking to my sister again,
00:37:51I'll take your head off.
00:37:53Brother, what's wrong with you?
00:37:56Don't listen to him.
00:37:57He's only showing off.
00:37:59All right.
00:38:02I understand.
00:38:03You really hate my guts.
00:38:08But let's not leave angry like this.
00:38:12I'm willing to part friends.
00:38:14I don't like European gestures.
00:38:17Well, all right.
00:38:20Well, now are you satisfied, you insensitive brute, you?
00:38:25You'll thank me years from now for this.
00:38:27No, I won't.
00:38:27I'll hate you.
00:38:29Like Bruce does.
00:38:31We'll see what his father has to say about that.
00:38:34Go home.
00:38:40What is it?
00:38:42It's your son.
00:38:43I don't want him going out with my sister.
00:38:46He's putting crazy ideas into her head.
00:38:48Oh, really?
00:38:51Crazy ideas, huh?
00:38:53Sure it isn't the other way around.
00:38:54My sister.
00:38:55She's a good girl.
00:38:56And my parents and I think she has too bright a future to throw it away on a lazy daydreamer
00:39:01like your son, Bruce.
00:39:03So, she's a good girl, huh?
00:39:07Then what about the delivery boy?
00:39:09That's nothing but gossip.
00:39:12What proof do you have?
00:39:13How dare you stain our family name with all these vicious and tasteless accusations?
00:39:18Either back up what you're saying, or I'll expect an apology from you this very instant.
00:39:25Before I apologize, take a look at this letter that I just happened to have.
00:39:36Chuck, last night was great.
00:39:38Let's do it again.
00:39:39Love, Sue.
00:39:40My sister.
00:39:42She wrote all of this?
00:39:45So, you see, your sister isn't the angel you thought her to be, is she?
00:39:51How dare you?
00:39:53Dad, what are you saying?
00:39:54Shut up.
00:39:55You've said enough.
00:39:56I'm warning you.
00:39:57If you spread that letter around, I'll kill you.
00:39:59I swear to it, I'll kill you and your rotten son.
00:40:01His father realized that Bruce was driving everyone karate crazy,
00:40:05and felt it was time to have it out with Bruce, once and for all.
00:40:09We now must talk.
00:40:11We must clear the air.
00:40:12Well, it's about time.
00:40:15Now I'll be able to sleep at night.
00:40:17I hope so.
00:40:19Ah, then you won't be such a royal pain in the ass, right?
00:40:24Ah, Bruce.
00:40:28Tell me, why do you like to hurt your mother?
00:40:30But I love mother.
00:40:31Love your mother?
00:40:33Ha!
00:40:34You do nothing but bring her grief and sorrow.
00:40:36You know, if he'd been taught to respect us at an early age,
00:40:40this wouldn't have happened.
00:40:42Ah, what's happened to today's youth?
00:40:44Gone to hell.
00:40:47Papa, do you mean to tell me that you never wanted to be like great-grandfather?
00:40:51A samurai warrior?
00:40:53The greatest samurai.
00:40:54He was the king of them all.
00:40:56Oh, I guess I thought about it.
00:40:58Once or twice.
00:40:59Then you understand.
00:41:02Papa, I want this more than anything in the world.
00:41:05It's my whole life.
00:41:07I want to be the best.
00:41:10So you want to be the greatest.
00:41:11Don't you remember what I told you about the touch of death
00:41:13and how it haunted and destroyed your great-grandfather?
00:41:16Sure.
00:41:17But that's nothing but a lot of superstitious mumbo-jumbo.
00:41:20Ah, so you really think so, huh?
00:41:22Do you realize your great-grandfather's death is still a mystery?
00:41:25Huh?
00:41:26He found him by a roadside, his body and face all distorted.
00:41:30That's what the martial arts did to your great-grandfather.
00:41:32He never had any peace.
00:42:02He never had any peace.
00:42:28You will always have to defend himself.
00:42:31It wasn't meant to be otherwise.
00:42:37All this talking has made me hungry.
00:42:39It's time I had some lunch.
00:42:40Always eating?
00:42:42Is that all you can think of?
00:42:43I'm hungry.
00:42:45But what about Bruce?
00:42:47Well, it's something to consider.
00:42:52Give me some time to think.
00:42:54Papa, thank you for understanding.
00:42:57Papa?
00:42:59Does that mean I can continue studying martial arts?
00:43:02Well, I don't know.
00:43:05Well, then, can I go to the matches this afternoon?
00:43:07Karate matches?
00:43:09Why, of course, karate matches.
00:43:11Oh, too.
00:43:12Oh, no.
00:43:14Can I have something to eat for lunch, please?
00:43:15This is your lunch.
00:43:20What's this?
00:43:21Consomme, doctor's orders.
00:43:26Consomme?
00:43:28Can you bring me a steak?
00:43:29How do you want it?
00:43:31Medium rare.
00:43:32You know it's no good for you.
00:43:34Get it.
00:43:35Uh-huh.
00:43:37Papa, like I was saying before, if I could go to the matches...
00:43:41Shut up about these stupid matches, will you?
00:43:44Then you, stop your sulking now.
00:43:48Uh, Bruce.
00:43:50Did you finish your homework assignment on the art of the Ming dynasty?
00:43:53Well, it's almost done.
00:43:54Up to your room.
00:43:56Yes, sir.
00:43:58Hurry.
00:44:00Right now.
00:44:01Could I do it tonight?
00:44:02It should have been finished yesterday.
00:44:06Please, honorable father.
00:44:09No.
00:44:18Sue!
00:44:19Sue!
00:44:22Oh, Jack.
00:44:23Have you seen Sue?
00:44:24I think she went to the movies.
00:44:26She should be back pretty soon.
00:44:28Gee, that's odd.
00:44:29We had a date this afternoon.
00:44:32Sue!
00:44:36Driving you crazy with all that karate talk.
00:44:41Although Jack understood what Sue was going through, she still sought other advice.
00:44:46So she went to the wise old caretaker, who had long served the Lee household, to understand
00:44:52Bruce's obsession with his martial arts ancestry.
00:44:55It all began long ago, in a remote village where there lived an exciting samurai warrior, a real
00:45:01legend, a living champion.
00:45:15Even if the fox was going to kill a Juliet.
00:45:30She was apparently with him in the hospital.
00:45:31Moved over of the

00:46:33For it wasn't long before Bruce's great-grandfather tired of killing, and settled down with his wife and child to
00:46:38a peaceful existence.
00:46:40This peace was often disturbed, for his reputation attracted many who sought his assistance.
00:46:45Listen, Chan, General High's death has created an important vacancy in our council, which I wonder if you will consider
00:46:53taking.
00:46:54The fringe benefits are nice, and you'll be adequately furnished with the house of your own.
00:46:58You'll be accountable only to his highness, with you on the council.
00:47:08You're quite generous, your highness, yet I must refuse.
00:47:15If I go on, there'll be no end to it.
00:47:19There's been too much bloodshed.
00:47:23Please.
00:47:25I wish you to have this sword, to protect your highness.
00:47:29I would deem it an honor if you would.
00:47:31Here.
00:47:34I'd rather think you should reconsider.
00:47:37For others may surely want to challenge you.
00:47:40There is really nothing to reconsider.
00:47:42No disrespect intended, your highness.
00:47:45Our house is here.
00:47:46As it happens, we are thinking of retiring.
00:47:48I shall have my house to attend.
00:47:51To a while, my husband will fish.
00:47:55Bruce's ancestor, Chan Lee, spent the next five years living a sheltered existence.
00:47:59That calm, though, was shattered when he confronted another in an endless parade of warriors who wanted to challenge him.
00:48:39Forgive the intrusion.
00:48:41And Tan Chan-fei asked me to extend to you his warmest greetings, Chan.
00:48:47Tan Chan-fei.
00:48:49I don't know the gentleman.
00:48:54Get a take away.
00:49:03Sure, Master Chan.
00:49:04Meanwhile, back at Chan's house, things were heating up.
00:49:14Your name is Chan.
00:49:18Chan!
00:49:19The gentleman thinks that we're just playing, eh?
00:49:25No, quite the contrary.
00:49:28Stop that, you hear?
00:49:29You take us for idiots?
00:49:32He speaks like a woman.
00:49:35That's right.
00:49:36You mustn't be angry with her, Lu Chao.
00:49:38You might get the little girl mad at us.
00:49:46She just needs a little gentle prodding, that's all, and she'll come with us piecemeal.
00:49:51Isn't that all, Lu Chao?
00:49:52Huh.
00:49:53Why do you always ask me?
00:49:59Let's show this little man who we are.
00:50:02We are the warriors known as the H.C. Monsters.
00:50:07Let us show him a thing or two.
00:50:36Let us show him a little girl.
00:50:59Es, es, es...
00:51:08Mamie.
00:51:10Randa, ¿qué pasó?
00:51:12Ella fue atacada muy brutalmente.
00:51:14¿They llegaron a tu casa?
00:51:15No.
00:51:17No.
00:51:18No.
00:51:20Para Chan, esto significó solo una cosa.
00:51:24Revención.
00:51:30Jack.
00:51:55Padre, ¿no?
00:51:56Yo.
00:52:04Es Bruce.
00:52:05He's gone.
00:52:07He left me a note this morning.
00:52:11I never thought it would have come to this.
00:52:14And he had such a promising future.
00:52:18But all that is nothing more than a dream to us now.
00:52:21Nothing more than just a dream.
00:52:25A waste.
00:52:26Such a terrible waste.
00:52:30Papa.
00:52:31Papa, it was Bruce's decision to do this.
00:52:34Oh, it's all your fault.
00:52:36Why did you have to come home again?
00:52:37All he did was open all wounds.
00:52:40Well.
00:52:40But.
00:52:41He followed your example and ran away.
00:52:43But, Papa.
00:52:44But what?
00:52:44I tried.
00:52:45Yeah, you tried.
00:52:46Oh, no.
00:52:46Tried like hell.
00:52:47No more.
00:52:47Those crazy ideas about inner peace that you brought home from the big city of God knows where.
00:52:51You crazy kid.
00:52:55Papa.
00:52:57Let's drop it all.
00:52:58No way.
00:53:01Sorry.
00:53:03Uh-huh.
00:53:04Perhaps you'd like to forget it was your fault, too.
00:53:09Well, he's on his own now, I guess.
00:53:12Papa.
00:53:14Like he wanted.
00:53:17I don't think you ever really understood him.
00:53:19I knew it just had to end this way.
00:53:23Maybe he'll find the happiness he seeks.
00:53:26He certainly didn't find it here.
00:53:29Yes.
00:53:37Maybe it was my fault I'm through judging him.
00:53:41Let our ancestors do that.
00:53:44After all, it's their reputation he has to live up to.
00:53:48His fate is now in their hands.
00:54:05Mustn't stop.
00:54:09Hey.
00:54:10Hey.
00:54:13Touch.
00:54:14Touch.
00:54:33¡Vamos!
00:54:52¡Vamos!
00:55:22¡Vamos!
00:55:34¡Vamos!
00:55:36¡Vamos!
00:55:36He has a lot to live up to.
00:55:39Perhaps too much.
00:55:40I hope he finds happiness.
00:55:43Bueno, no hay nada más que podemos hacer ahora
00:55:47Bueno, no hay nada más
00:56:35Bueno, no hay nada más
00:56:49Bueno, no hay nada más
00:57:26Bueno, no hay nada más
00:58:45Bueno, no hay nada más
00:59:23Hey, look at that
00:59:24Check it out
00:59:30Shit, fucking cantaloupe tits
00:59:34I sure love to get my hands on some of that
00:59:37What are you waiting for? Come on
00:59:39Hey, let's get the guys
00:59:59Hey, I got a ton of surprise for you, baby
01:00:02Hey, let's get the tits

01:01:33Are these guys bothering you?
01:01:35You guys have no plans.
01:01:41Who's this clean cut and bright eyes?
01:01:45You really shouldn't have done that.
01:01:53Hey, baby.
01:01:55Hey, give it up.
01:01:56Hey, baby.
01:01:57Oh!
01:02:00Cut him off, baby.
01:02:01Give it up.
01:02:02Hey, come on, baby.
01:02:04Hey, come on.
01:02:05Cut your fucking ass.
01:02:13Yeah, fuck, look at me, you.
01:02:15Fuck, look at me, you.
01:02:17Fuck, look at me, you.
01:02:24Oh, shit, I'm getting the fuck out of here.
01:02:29Oh, shit, I'm getting the fuck out of here.
01:02:39You all right?
01:02:40My bird.
01:02:42My bird.
01:02:46Hand over the purse.
01:02:48I don't think my friends would like that.
01:02:52What brings?
01:03:11You're asking for it, mother.
01:03:12Let's get it, ma'am.
01:03:13Come on, pal.
01:03:14Come on, boy.
01:03:16Come on.
01:03:17Come on.
01:03:18Let's get this sucker.
01:03:18Let's get it.
01:03:22Let's go.
01:03:35Let's get it.
01:03:40Let's get it.
01:04:34¡Gracias!
01:04:49¡Gracias!
01:05:11Who Wallace said?
01:05:12I must have said his name was Louie.
01:05:14Bill Louie.
01:05:31That Bill Louie interpretation of Cato
01:05:33suggests another interesting aspect of Bruce's career
01:05:36namely the incredible amount of emulation
01:05:39que Bruce Lee inspiró.
01:05:45Algunas de los imitadores
01:05:47fueron muy buenos,
01:05:48pero nadie nunca capturó el espíritu
01:05:50y charisma de Bruce's personalidad.
01:05:53Witnesses, por ejemplo,
01:05:54este clip de Bruce Lye,
01:05:56quizás el más famoso Lee imitador.
01:05:58Aunque los movimientos son técnico
01:06:00correcto,
01:06:01el poder es noticably absent.
01:06:03Let's gain more light
01:06:05into this,
01:06:05la clave de Bruce's personalidad
01:06:08de uno de sus amigos.
01:06:09Aaron Banks,
01:06:10you knew Bruce well
01:06:12around this time.
01:06:13What was he like?
01:06:14We met while he was
01:06:15doing the Green Hornet.
01:06:16He was a great guy
01:06:17with a fine sense of humor
01:06:18and he was always experimenting
01:06:19with new things
01:06:20in the martial arts.
01:06:21When you got together,
01:06:23what did you two discuss?
01:06:25Well, we spent most of our time
01:06:27complimenting each other
01:06:28about our various accomplishments.
01:06:31All finished.
01:06:33That's quite a scrapbook.
01:06:35You're really accomplished a lot.
01:06:37Thank you,
01:06:38but I don't think so.
01:06:39You've done more
01:06:40in a few years
01:06:41than most men
01:06:42have done in a lifetime.
01:06:43Don't you agree?
01:06:44Nope.
01:06:45Aaron,
01:06:45it's you who've done a lot.
01:06:47You're the number one promoter
01:06:48of martial arts
01:06:49in the world.
01:06:49No, Bruce.
01:06:50It's you
01:06:50who's been the number one
01:06:51promoter of martial arts.
01:06:54Hey,
01:06:54while we're here,
01:06:55come on,
01:06:56show me that new maneuver
01:06:57you've been working on.
01:06:59Occasionally, though,
01:07:00he would show me
01:07:01one of the maneuvers
01:07:01he was working on.
01:07:02Watch closely, Aaron.
01:07:03And it's a very fast
01:07:04and deadly maneuver.
01:07:06That is a pretty sharp maneuver.
01:07:09It's something I've been
01:07:09working on for a while,
01:07:11my friend.
01:07:12Is it related to the touch
01:07:13of that principle
01:07:14you recently rediscovered?
01:07:15A variation of it.
01:07:17How so?
01:07:19Psychological.
01:07:20Get it?
01:07:21Very much.
01:07:25What are you smiling at, Aaron?
01:07:27That looks just like
01:07:28what one of my students
01:07:29at the Karate Academy
01:07:30is working on.
01:07:31He's working on it
01:07:32because I showed it to him.
01:07:34That extra footwork you added
01:07:36really gives it
01:07:37a whole new dimension.
01:07:38You better believe it.
01:07:40Splits the attention.
01:07:41It's really meant
01:07:42to distract you, Aaron.
01:07:44Can I teach it
01:07:45to the fighters I train?
01:07:46Even though you're
01:07:47the best handler
01:07:48of fights around,
01:07:49I don't think so.
01:07:51That's the way you feel.
01:07:52I'll go along with it
01:07:54100%.
01:07:56So you can see,
01:07:57Bruce was really
01:07:58a very good-natured fellow.
01:08:00Thank you, Aaron,
01:08:00for that interesting glimpse
01:08:02of Bruce's choir design.
01:08:03I know you have to get back
01:08:04to the escorers' table
01:08:05so I won't keep you any longer.
01:08:06Thank you.
01:08:07So, there you have it.
01:08:09The Bruce Lee story.
01:08:11The early years.
01:08:12Told by the people
01:08:13who knew him best.
01:08:14A colorful story
01:08:15which gives great insight
01:08:16into an awful ignored
01:08:17but nevertheless,
01:08:18a critical part
01:08:20of his life.
01:08:21I hope you've enjoyed
01:08:22our little halftime show.
01:08:26Ah, but life goes on.
01:08:28So let's return
01:08:29to the present
01:08:29and another exciting match.
01:08:32This one featuring
01:08:33the incredible skill
01:08:34of Terry Yuka Higa
01:08:35and his Okinawa Kempo
01:08:36Karate Academy.
01:08:38Higa is highly respected
01:08:40by his peers
01:08:40for his insistence
01:08:41on maintaining
01:08:42the traditional aspects
01:08:43of martial arts.
01:08:45Yet despite this,
01:08:46he always manages
01:08:47to thrill his audience
01:08:48with some exciting
01:08:49new display
01:08:50like the one
01:08:51you're seeing now.
01:08:52It just goes to show you
01:08:54that the traditional
01:08:55and innovative
01:08:56can find a happy marriage
01:08:57in the martial arts.
01:09:01And now,
01:09:02let's look at a scene
01:09:03right out of
01:09:04I Am a Fugitive
01:09:05from a karate chain gang.
01:09:10Look at those
01:09:10taggers go at it.
01:09:12There's no love lost there.
01:09:15Now, kids,
01:09:16I know this looks
01:09:17like a lot of fun,
01:09:18but I don't advise you
01:09:19do this without
01:09:20parental supervision.
01:09:21It can be very dangerous.
01:09:29And now, let's watch
01:09:30as a couple of Higa's
01:09:31students engage
01:09:32in a little freestyle sparring.
01:09:34You've undoubtedly noticed
01:09:36that they look
01:09:36somewhat like fences,
01:09:37but all that protection
01:09:39is necessary,
01:09:40for a straight kick
01:09:41can be just as dangerous
01:09:42as a sharp blade.
01:09:44This is a very good exercise
01:09:46in developing timing,
01:09:47balance,
01:09:48and overall coordination.
01:09:50Higa is a strong proponent
01:09:52of stressing the basics,
01:09:53and the skills
01:09:54of his students
01:09:55reflect that.
01:10:00Higa's students
01:10:01are setting up
01:10:02for their next demonstration,
01:10:03but what's this?
01:10:04The crowd in appreciation
01:10:06for the marvelous show
01:10:07he's put on
01:10:07is giving him
01:10:08a lousy ovation.
01:10:10Listen to those fans.
01:10:12But Higa's not
01:10:12want to rest on his wall,
01:10:14and he's already out there
01:10:15for his next demo.
01:10:18This is a 2-on-1 attack
01:10:20using sticks.
01:10:21Look at those moves.
01:10:22Reflexes are so quick
01:10:23that his own body
01:10:24doesn't know
01:10:24what it's going to do next.
01:10:26Give him a hand,
01:10:27ladies and gentlemen.
01:10:28He really deserves it.
01:10:37And now,
01:10:38in keeping the Higa's
01:10:39penchant for innovation,
01:10:40he has prepared
01:10:41a real treat
01:10:42for us tonight,
01:10:43a feat never before
01:10:44performed in the United States.
01:10:46The crowd can sense
01:10:48the significance of this.
01:10:50There's an electricity
01:10:51in the atmosphere
01:10:51that's hard to describe.
01:10:54Higa is readying himself now
01:10:55as his assistant
01:10:56places the sledgehammer.
01:10:59That's right.
01:11:00Close.
01:11:00The other students
01:11:01are leaving the ring area
01:11:02to avoid any distraction
01:11:04and to give everyone
01:11:05the best possible view.
01:11:07Hold it.
01:11:10Hold it.
01:11:11Nervous excitement
01:11:12fills the air.
01:11:13Very dangerous.
01:11:15Higa's assistant
01:11:16measures his stroke
01:11:17very carefully.
01:11:18The slightest miscalculation
01:11:20could shatter
01:11:21Higa's arm
01:11:22beyond repair.
01:11:23If this goes as planned,
01:11:25Higa's arm
01:11:26will split the boards
01:11:27in half
01:11:27while itself
01:11:28with standing injury.
01:11:33He's done it.
01:11:34But wait,
01:11:35he's not finished yet.
01:11:36There are still
01:11:36some boards unbroken.
01:11:37They set up
01:11:38quickly yet?
01:11:39Yes.
01:11:39The remaining boards
01:11:40have shattered.
01:11:41What an effort.
01:11:42You can see
01:11:43how emotionally draining
01:11:44that was.
01:11:45But let's hope
01:11:45Higa can summon
01:11:46the strength
01:11:47to take one last
01:11:48bow with his students
01:11:48in front of
01:11:49this appreciative crowd.
01:11:51That's Terry Ucahiga.
01:11:52He's really
01:11:53something else.
01:11:54Don't you think so,
01:11:55Fred?
01:11:56I don't.
01:11:58As I mentioned earlier,
01:12:01not everyone here
01:12:01this afternoon
01:12:02feels that this
01:12:03afternoon's bout
01:12:03will accurately
01:12:04determine
01:12:05Bruce Lee's successor.
01:12:07Many feel that
01:12:07there's no way
01:12:08anyone can make
01:12:09such a claim
01:12:09to Bruce's title.
01:12:11Perhaps the most
01:12:12vocal of these people
01:12:12is the man
01:12:13sitting here next to me.
01:12:14I'm speaking,
01:12:15of course,
01:12:16about international
01:12:17film star
01:12:17and former
01:12:18pro football player
01:12:19Fred Williamson.
01:12:20Fred,
01:12:21would you mind
01:12:22repeating some of
01:12:23your views
01:12:23for our TV audience?
01:12:24Well,
01:12:25these are not just
01:12:25my views,
01:12:26they are.
01:12:27These are the facts.
01:12:28And the fact is
01:12:29that this match
01:12:30is just another fight
01:12:31between two good
01:12:32karate fighters.
01:12:34I mean,
01:12:34it's an insult
01:12:35to Bruce Lee
01:12:36to think that
01:12:37either one of them
01:12:37could succeed in it.
01:12:39Well, tell me,
01:12:39what about your
01:12:40martial arts background?
01:12:41Do you think
01:12:42you're as good
01:12:42as Bruce Lee?
01:12:43Why should I have to be?
01:12:44Why should they?
01:12:46Bruce Lee was
01:12:47great at what he did
01:12:48and fantastic
01:12:49at what I do.
01:12:51But you're
01:12:51avoiding the question.
01:12:53What about
01:12:53the martial arts?
01:12:55Do you really feel
01:12:55that you have
01:12:56the skills
01:12:56necessary to live
01:12:57up to Bruce's reputation?
01:12:59Look, Adolf,
01:13:00I do all of my
01:13:00karate fighting
01:13:01in all my films.
01:13:02I do all my stunts.
01:13:03I mean,
01:13:04they didn't call me
01:13:05the hammer
01:13:05or nothing.
01:13:06Well, Fred,
01:13:07you do present
01:13:07a most convincing argument.
01:13:09But as we both know,
01:13:10it's the public
01:13:11that decides these things.
01:13:13And it's been the public
01:13:14who has labeled
01:13:14this match
01:13:15the one that will
01:13:16determine Bruce's successor.
01:13:19Well, unfortunately,
01:13:20there's nothing
01:13:20I can do about that.
01:13:22But I feel that
01:13:23in order to achieve
01:13:24the success
01:13:25that Bruce Lee reached,
01:13:26one has to be
01:13:27physically developed
01:13:28as well as mentally
01:13:29developed.
01:13:29I mean,
01:13:29these two things
01:13:30have to become
01:13:31one.
01:13:32But in the meantime,
01:13:34we'll see one of my movies
01:13:35and you know
01:13:35what I'm talking about.
01:13:36Well,
01:13:37thank you very much,
01:13:38Fred Williamson,
01:13:38for your observations
01:13:39and good luck
01:13:40in your quest
01:13:41to be the best.
01:13:44Right on.
01:13:46Let's get back
01:13:47to some ring action.
01:13:55Karate fans
01:13:55will recognize
01:13:56that man in red,
01:13:57white, and blue
01:13:58as Richie Barathe.
01:13:59What's this?
01:14:00One of his sparring partners
01:14:01appears to be hurt.
01:14:03Looks like Barathe
01:14:04put a little too much power
01:14:05into that kick.
01:14:06The fighters
01:14:07do wear protective padding,
01:14:08but that's not much
01:14:09protection against
01:14:10that kind of brute force.
01:14:12Fortunately for this fellow,
01:14:13he can manage
01:14:14to walk away
01:14:14from a kick like that.
01:14:16That's probably
01:14:17the worst stomachache
01:14:17you'll ever have.
01:14:18But seriously, folks,
01:14:20he appears to be okay.
01:14:22Barathe also looks
01:14:23to be regaining
01:14:24his composure,
01:14:25something he'll really
01:14:26need to do
01:14:26because they're now
01:14:27setting up for
01:14:28Richie's main attraction.
01:14:30Barathe is fast
01:14:31becoming a household name
01:14:33as a result of his
01:14:34recent appearances
01:14:35on the Johnny Carson show.
01:14:36It was there
01:14:37he smashed 13
01:14:38climbing boards
01:14:39to pieces
01:14:39with a hammer fist,
01:14:41incurring in the process
01:14:42serious third-degree burns.
01:14:44He won't be
01:14:44performing that trick
01:14:45tonight,
01:14:46not because he's afraid,
01:14:47but because his doctors
01:14:48have forbidden it.
01:14:50In order to compensate
01:14:51for this cutback, though,
01:14:52he's added another board,
01:14:54bringing the total
01:14:55to 14.
01:14:56If he smashes this,
01:14:57it will be
01:14:58a new world record.
01:14:59And what a record
01:15:00it would be,
01:15:01especially considering
01:15:02the handicaps
01:15:03he's had to overcome.
01:15:04For instance,
01:15:06when he was two,
01:15:07he lost the sight
01:15:08in one eye
01:15:08in a tragic accident.
01:15:10Loss of sight
01:15:11in an eye
01:15:11and perception
01:15:12making even simple
01:15:13acts of coordination
01:15:14very difficult.
01:15:16Over the years,
01:15:17his peers have been
01:15:18amazed at his ability
01:15:19to maintain control
01:15:20over his techniques
01:15:21without depth of perception.
01:15:23Another handicap
01:15:24has been a serious
01:15:25blood disease
01:15:26he's had since
01:15:26he was 17.
01:15:28It's dormant now,
01:15:29but he's had to suffer
01:15:30through heart attacks
01:15:31and prolonged periods
01:15:32of incapacitation
01:15:33in learning to live with it.
01:15:35He's just about
01:15:36ready to begin,
01:15:37so we'd better
01:15:38lower our voices
01:15:38as the height
01:15:39of concentration
01:15:40is required.
01:16:00He's done it.
01:16:01He's done it.
01:16:02A new world record.
01:16:03Richard J. Barathe
01:16:05has beaten the best.
01:16:06He has every right
01:16:07to feel proud.
01:16:09Listen to those fans.
01:16:10They know what he's
01:16:11had to go through
01:16:12to reach this moment.
01:16:20Well, there's not much
01:16:22you can do for an encore
01:16:23after that
01:16:23except just pick up
01:16:25the pieces.
01:16:28And now it's time
01:16:29for the big two
01:16:30and the big one.
01:16:31The main event
01:16:32for the welterweight
01:16:33full contact
01:16:34karate championship
01:16:35of the world.
01:16:36Louis Neglia
01:16:37versus John Cyclone
01:16:38Flood.
01:16:39A match much discussed
01:16:41in the press this week
01:16:42because of its claim
01:16:43to be the determinant
01:16:43of Bruce Lee's successor.
01:16:45And much discussed
01:16:46because of the entire
01:16:47touch of death controversy
01:16:49that surrounded.
01:16:50Here we see
01:16:51not only a winner
01:16:52but an answer
01:16:53to the following question.
01:16:54Will that winner
01:16:55in succeeding Bruce
01:16:56also inherit
01:16:57his so-called curse?
01:17:07And there's the bell.
01:17:10both fighters
01:17:11are starting off
01:17:12cautiously
01:17:13feeling each other out.
01:17:16Flood is undefeated
01:17:17in 15 bouts.
01:17:20Neglia has 30 wins
01:17:21and only two losses
01:17:22in full contact.
01:17:24And now look at Flood.
01:17:26He appears to be
01:17:27coming on strong
01:17:27with a series of
01:17:28up-to-test
01:17:29accommodation flurries.
01:17:30Neglia is waiting
01:17:30for an opening.
01:17:31Watch out Cyclone.
01:17:32Neglia's feet
01:17:33have the potential too.
01:17:34And there it is.
01:17:34His deadly king.
01:17:35Come on.
01:17:36Come on.
01:17:36I came in ahead.
01:17:37Flood is back
01:17:37on the offensive.
01:17:38Even though Flood
01:17:39is the champion,
01:17:40Neglia is the crowd
01:17:41favorite tonight
01:17:41because he's
01:17:42literally fighting
01:17:43in his own backyard
01:17:44having been born
01:17:45and raised in Brooklyn.
01:17:48Go, go, go!
01:17:58They're really going
01:17:59at it now.
01:18:00Toe-to-toe.
01:18:01Draven punches.
01:18:03Hey, look at this exchange.
01:18:05They're both taking
01:18:06a lot of punishment.
01:18:08But they're tough.
01:18:10They can take it
01:18:11as well as dish it out.
01:18:14Both fighters
01:18:15are on the attack.
01:18:16Looking for that opening
01:18:17which will provide
01:18:18a kick knockout
01:18:18and there's the bell
01:18:20ending round one.
01:18:23Boy, that was
01:18:24some exchange.
01:18:25It's hard to imagine
01:18:26how someone can last
01:18:27through ten rounds of that.
01:18:29By the way,
01:18:30each round is scored
01:18:31on a ten-point must system
01:18:32with three judges.
01:18:33The referee
01:18:34not being allowed to score.
01:18:37Word is apparently
01:18:38coming down
01:18:39from the press box
01:18:40that Neglia won
01:18:40the first round
01:18:41on a split decision.
01:18:42Two of the judges
01:18:43going with Neglia
01:18:44and one with Blood.
01:18:46And there's the bell
01:18:47for round two.
01:18:52Blood leads in
01:18:53with a hard right
01:18:54and sends Neglia
01:18:54bouncing off the ropes.
01:18:55He's covering up.
01:18:56Now Neglia's on there, Jack.
01:18:58A right, a left,
01:18:59another right.
01:19:00And Blood is down.
01:19:01The referee is
01:19:02motioning Neglia
01:19:03to a neutral corner.
01:19:04Blood is obviously hurt.
01:19:07The referee is giving him
01:19:09a mandatory ace count.
01:19:12And Blood says
01:19:13he's okay.
01:19:25And they're back at it.
01:19:26This is turning
01:19:27into one pill of a fight.
01:19:39The referee is coming
01:19:41to his desk.
01:19:44Near the rest of the
01:19:45And we're going to
01:19:52in eventually
01:19:52and said
01:19:52Bekun
01:19:52Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
01:19:55Ooh, yeah, ooh, yeah, ooh, yeah, ooh, yeah,ён, ooh, yeah.
01:20:00Ooh, sho, whoa, whoa, ah, ooh, ooh, haven't, ooh, ooh, ah, ooh, ah, ooh, ah, ooh.
01:20:15¡Gracias!
01:20:44¡Gracias!
01:21:13¡Gracias!
01:21:51¡Gracias!
01:22:10¡Gracias!
01:22:10The garden is empty now
01:22:12The fighters have gone home
01:22:15The building is closed for the night
01:22:18What have we discovered from all this?
01:22:21A new champion
01:22:24Perhaps
01:22:26A successor to Bruce Lee
01:22:29I doubt it
01:22:32Well, you see
01:22:32What most heir apparents to Bruce seem to forget
01:22:35es que para ser el mejor
01:22:38debemos beat el mejor
01:22:40y Bruce Lee
01:22:41fue el mejor
01:22:42y no puede ser más ganado
01:22:46todo el resto es solo
01:22:47especulación
01:22:50y yo por uno
01:22:52am feliz
01:22:53pero por qué deberíamos intentar
01:22:54topar su legacy
01:22:57su existencia, creo que
01:22:59tiene una influencia muy positiva
01:23:01para sumirlo
01:23:02yo no puedo recordar
01:23:04Ron Van Cleef's remark about Bruce
01:23:07he was the prototype
01:23:10everything else
01:23:11is just an
01:23:12imitation
01:23:30the secret of karate is power
01:23:33internal power
01:23:34from the ear
01:23:35the vibrating power
01:23:36how does it work
01:23:37it's internal power
01:23:38I don't think anyone
01:23:39needs buttons
01:23:40some of this stuff
01:23:41involves stunt work
01:23:42can be pretty dangerous
01:23:43I'm the best fighter there is
01:23:45I can move anyone
01:23:46I can kill with my bare hands
01:23:48in order to achieve the success
01:23:50that Bruce Lee reached
01:23:51one has to be
01:23:52physical
01:23:52touch of death
01:23:53it's a positive energy
01:23:54these two things
01:23:55have to become
01:23:56one
01:23:57it's a positive energy
