A shocking case of a fake marriage racket has come to light in Maharashtra’s Beed district, where a woman allegedly married nine men and duped them of lakhs of rupees before fleeing.

The latest incident was reported from Umapur village, where the accused targeted a young man through a network of agents posing as marriage brokers. The gang allegedly lured him with false claims, including that the woman was unmarried, and arranged the marriage after taking a hefty sum.

According to police, the woman had previously married eight men across different districts using a similar modus operandi. Shortly after each marriage, she would abscond with cash and valuables.

The racket primarily targeted young men in rural areas who were facing difficulties in finding brides. Agents reportedly created fake documents and facilitated quick marriages, only for the bride to disappear within days citing various excuses.

Suspicion arose in the latest case after the woman’s behaviour appeared doubtful. Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that she had carried out multiple such fraudulent marriages in the past.

The victim approached the Superintendent of Police, following which a case was registered and an investigation was launched.

Police said efforts are underway to trace the accused woman and other members of the organised gang involved in the racket.
