00:00Andrew Barry comments from the owners' meetings where he talked about player extensions and contracts
00:05and in regard to Deshaun Watson just kind of left it open to performance
00:11when he didn't say we're going to extend him.
00:14Well, let's be honest, he didn't say that.
00:16But he left it very open.
00:18And that makes us all think, I thought this was going to be over in five.
00:25And then you were moving on, which, by the way, I still think is the case.
00:29I'd be stunned if Deshaun Watson were back after this coming season
00:33unless he does miraculous things that nobody's expecting him to do here.
00:374-0 to start the season will change the whole world.
00:40Not if he gets hurt.
00:42Okay.
00:43There it is.
00:44But Andrew was asked about the quarterback situation and acquisition of quarterbacks.
00:51And if you recall, after the season, he said the words, I think they're in the correct order,
00:59external veteran option, a quarterback.
01:02External veteran option.
01:04Okay.
01:05And then we had...
01:06We've been hanging our hat on that thing for months.
01:08Well, he said it.
01:09I know.
01:10Right?
01:10Yes.
01:11Did he not say it?
01:12He said it.
01:12Those are his words.
01:13That's what drives every conversation about whether Shadour is a starter, whether Deshaun's
01:19coming back, what are they going to do with Gabriel, and are they going to bring somebody
01:23else in?
01:24External veteran option.
01:25And then Todd Munkin said the same thing.
01:28Yep.
01:30Todd, we're looking forward to seeing veterans who are out there.
01:33Well, at the owners' meetings, Andrew Berry talked about quarterback.
01:38First of all, just kind of about acquiring a quarterback.
01:42In terms of them competing for their starting job, anyone we bring in, we want to compete.
01:47But a large part of that will be, for any young player, will depend on their acclimation
01:51to the NFL and their readiness to play.
01:53And that's really done on a case-by-case basis.
01:57In terms of Ty specifically, I think you can understand we wouldn't necessarily comment
02:01on specific prospects.
02:04If you have spent time with Ty, I think that's obvious and will continue to do so.
02:09But I think he has a bright NFL future.
02:11Okay, so he kind of molded, folded that into Ty Simpson, the Alabama quarterback.
02:18Yeah, not a bad answer either.
02:20No, no, he can't talk specifically, but okay, realistic to bring in somebody, but he said
02:26younger, and then, you know, they'd have to be able to compete for the job.
02:33He followed it up with this, that might give you a little pause.
02:38You always want to be flexible, because you don't know how circumstances change or what
02:42opportunities come your way.
02:45Our lean would be, if we do add someone to the quarterback room, you know, it would be
02:50someone who's a younger player, most likely.
02:53But I can't state that definitively, because I don't know what the next couple weeks will
02:58hold.
02:59Anyone that we bring in at any spot on the roster, you know, our thought is that they are competing.
03:04They're competing to play.
03:05They have something that we like in their skill set, and our expectation would be for
03:13them to work harder.
03:15Younger player.
03:16If we bring anybody in at the position, it would be a younger player.
03:21Now, that doesn't mean he can't be a young veteran, but I don't think that's what everybody
03:26had in mind.
03:27Do you?
03:27No, absolutely not.
03:29Do you think it's what they had in mind?
03:30No, I think they wanted to bring in a free agent quarterback that, you know, Deshaun
03:34doesn't work.
03:35But if they draft someone like 5th, 6th, 7th, and you're hoping that they end up on the
03:44practice squad?
03:47Gabriel will get picked up by another team?
03:49Do you mean in the 5th, 6th, or 7th round?
03:51Yeah, if they pick up a quarterback 5th, 6th, or 7th round, that that might be a quarterback
03:56who could find themselves on the practice squad.
03:57But do you think, first of all, one, do you think they could get Gabriel through to the
04:01practice squad?
04:04Unlikely.
04:06Dan?
04:06Possible, but unlikely.
04:08No.
04:08Someone would pick him up.
04:09I think so, too.
04:11And so that's a wasted pick from last year.
04:13I think I look at it more like that than the actual pick.
04:16And that's a wasted third round pick.
04:17Yeah.
04:20Unless, of course, he, and as Andrew Barry has said, nobody's been on the grass.
04:29Nobody's been out on the grass.
04:30You know, there is the possibility that any one of these three guys goes out and just
04:36impresses the bejeebers out of the new coaching staff, and that's your starting quarterback.
04:40Okay.
04:41I mean, we could handicap it, and I think we all would, Shadour, Deshaun, Dylan Gabriel.
04:47But it wasn't too long ago that this organization felt a lot more highly about Dylan Gabriel than
04:52they did about Shadour Sanders.
04:53So let's, let me preface it by saying this.
04:57What if Deshaun is not healthy enough to play?
04:59Okay.
04:59That's a possibility.
05:00Well, then you better have some kind of a veteran there.
05:02So what are we going to bring in?
05:03But he did have two second-year guys.
05:04Yeah.
05:08Two second-year quarterbacks and one first-year quarterback.
05:12I can't, I see, I can't fathom that happening.
05:14And that first-year quarterback is probably not going to be somebody you're drafting high
05:18in the draft.
05:21I would think not.
05:22No.
05:23The higher the goal with a quarterback, the odds are that they would have an opportunity.
05:26Like he said, we want to give them an opportunity to compete.
05:29Really?
05:30Really?
05:30Because you didn't give, you didn't give Shadour any chance to compete last year.
05:37You just didn't.
05:37Well, nor Dylan.
05:39Until you got rid of the veterans.
05:41Yeah.
05:43So maybe this is a Stefanski thing.
05:45That went, that this might be, we'll see.
05:48We'll see how it plays out in camp.
05:50We'll see how it plays out in the preseason games.
05:53But this would be a drastic turn if they give this, whoever they bring in, if they bring
05:59in a young quarterback, or even if they just let, you know, Gabriel and Sanders and Watson
06:05go toe-to-toe, right?
06:06I just don't.
06:07I mean, you do have three guys here right now.
06:10I mean, you don't, you might need another guy to throw passes in camp.
06:14You don't even have to draft a guy for that.
06:17I agree.
06:17You know, you could go, you could go sign any of these available free agents right now
06:22and bring them in.
06:23Trevor Simeon just signed in Atlanta.
06:25And so, you know, Stefanski now has, you know, Tua, Michael Penix, and Trevor Simeon.
06:32So they have a backup for Tua while Penix gets healthy.
06:36But you could just go sign a guy and bring him in and he could be a camp arm for
06:40you.
06:41But Andrew Berry just said-
06:43But I don't think that's what he's saying.
06:44No.
06:44He said, if we bring in anybody, it's to compete for the job.
06:49Which brings me back to Ty Simpson's value.
06:55If they draft-
06:57Can you imagine if they use one of their first three picks on Ty Simpson?
07:01Yes.
07:01I can see the second round.
07:03I mean, he's not going to last that long.
07:05Somebody's going to make the move.
07:07Do you move back up in to get him?
07:09I mean, I just asked.
07:11I just asked Scott if they would make a move to shift it to go get him.
07:15Would they come up for him?
07:16When do-
07:18They're on the field coming up when?
07:20April 7th, right?
07:22We're going to have practices coming up.
07:25OTA stuff.
07:27If I'm not mistaken.
07:29Sounds right.
07:30And they're going to have a chance to take a look at some of these guys.
07:32And that might clear up some of the thought process for the coaching staff.
07:37But I'm not kidding.
07:38What if Dylan or Shadour or Deshaun clearly makes the biggest impression on the coaching staff?
07:48I think that would be an ideal situation.
07:52That one of these guys, and I don't care which one, one of them clearly, clearly establishes himself as the
08:00best quarterback on this roster right now.
08:03That's better than having three guys look okay, isn't it?
08:06Yes.
08:07I need someone to jump off the page and say, I'm the starting quarterback.
08:10Look out, boys.
08:11Until something happens.
08:14That's where I'm just-
08:17I have no confidence right now.
08:19I just don't.
08:20No confidence in what?
08:21I don't have any confidence in the quarterback position at all.
08:24And part of it is, is because they wouldn't, if anyone you were going to have confidence in, it'd probably
08:29be Shadour.
08:30And the franchise doesn't seem to have confidence in him.
08:32Otherwise, you're not talking about bringing in external free agent quarterback.
08:37Even if they lied to me and said, well, we believe Shadour's the guy.
08:40Okay, I'd feel better.
08:42I'd be like, okay, we got a plan.
08:44We got a quarterback we're going to go forward with.
08:46We saw enough things that make us like him.
08:48We may still have to cut our teeth a little bit more because he's a second-year guy, but doesn't
08:53have a full season under his belt.
08:54I could live with all of those things.
08:57What I, this whole up in the air stuff, just, it's, it's aggravating and doesn't give me any sense of
09:05confidence towards what's going to happen out of that position.
09:07April 6th is the date teams that hired a new head coach for this season are able to begin off
09:14-season workout programs.
09:16So sooner rather than later, they're going to get a look.
09:20And maybe somebody makes that move and makes that, that impression.
09:24There are still veteran free agent quarterbacks out there.
09:29Nobody out of, I don't think.
09:30Oh boy.
09:31No, I'm not even, I'm not even going to name any.
09:33I was going to say, don't, don't read.
09:34I'm not even, I'm not even naming any.
09:35Don't read the free section of the paper again.
09:37Not, not even naming any.
09:38Okay, good.
09:40But there are guys out there.
09:41At this point, there's nobody out there who you would think he's your starting quarterback.
09:46So that ship, if you, if you thought there might be somebody there, I think that ship has sailed.
09:52Unless you want Kirk Cussman.
09:54I was waiting for it.
09:56Ooh, free crutches.
09:58I can find a use for free crutches.
10:02Be nice.
10:04You're the worst.
10:07You're the worst.
10:08Sitting there reading the free section of the paper.
10:10The old Achilles is all healed up.
10:13Aaron Rodgers is out there, but he's not coming here.
10:16He's either going to go play for your boy, Mike McCarthy, or he's going to go home.
10:20Ooh, free mattress.
10:22Maybe this one's in better shape.
10:24Want a toaster?
10:28Wait, refrigerator and it still works?
10:34Electrolux vacuum cleaner?
10:35All right.
10:35You pick it up?
10:36Okay.
10:37Had one of those.
10:38Electrolux?
10:39Old one.
10:39Yeah, from the 60s.
10:40Those things are bombproof.
10:41From the 60s.
10:41Wow.
10:42Like the tube that sat on the floor and they were like blue, kind of.
10:46You pull them along?
10:50At this point, the ship has sailed.
10:52Yes.
10:55Unless Kirk Cousins ends up here.
10:57I don't expect that.
10:58Neither do you.
10:59I don't.
10:59Dan certainly doesn't.
11:01Neither does the crutch manufacturer in town.
11:05Nor do we think Ty Simpson is showing up.
11:09But Andy, if they like him, if they like him, take him at six.
11:18And then you better be right.
11:20And guess what?
11:21Guess what?
11:22If he goes somewhere else and turns into a stud, then why didn't you take him at six?
11:27Oh, that's true.
11:28That's kind of a tough spot here they're in.
11:30We are living the wheel of regret.
11:32Well, are you not?
11:34Oh, of course you are.
11:35Of course you are.
11:36The same way you're going to be all season long looking to see what Kevin does in Atlanta.
11:40You know that if Kevin starts the season 2-0, this place is going to be freaking out.
11:46Unless we're 2-0.
11:47If they, like Ty Simpson, don't draft him, and he goes somewhere else and is really good,
11:54you're going to wonder, what the heck are you thinking?
11:57You really are.
11:58You're not going to...
11:59If you like him, let's put it this way.
12:02We'll wrap up this conversation this way.
12:04If you really think Ty Simpson is going to be a good NFL quarterback, not even saying great, good,
12:11and you think he's better than a beat-up Deshaun Watson, Shador Sanders, and Dylan Gabriel,
12:17you better take him, and it doesn't matter where.
12:21Oh, the fun we're going to have.
12:23Draft is coming up, baby.
12:25Get ready.
12:26Atlanta-Tampa NFC Championship game.
12:29April 23rd through the 25th NFL Draft.
12:33Ty, oh, Ty, where do you go?
12:35The Regret Bowl.
