Will there be relief for heat in the West and are spring temperatures here to stay in the Northeast? AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg breaks down the long-range forecast through the first part of April.
Transcript
00:00It's hard to believe, but spring has now begun, and we're looking to the end of the month of March
00:05and already into early April.
00:07And what are the three things we want to know about the period from, oh, the 27th of March through
00:10the beginning of April?
00:12Another cold front is lined up for the Great Lakes to the northeast late next week, and it's going to
00:16be a shot of cold air that will come in behind it.
00:18It could be the last of the really cold air behind it.
00:21The heat will slowly start to ease in the southwest.
00:24That doesn't mean you're going to see temperatures back to normal, but they'll move toward that direction from these incendiary
00:29highs that we've had of late.
00:31Mainly dry and warm weather for Texas to Florida, but even that has a little caveat with it, and we'll
00:36explain why.
00:37All right, here's the jet stream pattern for this period, March 27th through April 2nd.
00:41You'll notice that there's still plenty of Arctic air here with a big upper level low north of Hudson Bay,
00:45so that's where the coldest air is.
00:47But the good news is the vast reservoir of Arctic air that's been in Alaska, the Yukon Territory, the northwest
00:53territory is finally going to start to drain,
00:56which means the source regions aren't going to be quite as cold going forward into April.
01:00That's good news.
01:00With a flatter jet stream flow, the heat starts to get tamped down in the west.
01:04It doesn't go away, but at least it gets tamped down, and temperature will go back and forth with a
01:08series of fronts coming back and forth through this area.
01:10Now, as we look farther into the pattern, early April, really from the 3rd to the 10th, troughiness starts to
01:16come into the Pacific northwest and down into California,
01:20which means the heat eases even more.
01:22You may see a couple of showers in the Intermountain West, nothing of great importance.
01:26Lingering cold across the north, and in between, you're going to have the jet stream.
01:29So disturbances will come out from the south and west.
01:32You'll pull moisture from the Gulf of Mexico around this big high that you see off the southeast coast,
01:36and that's going to mean an opportunity for increased rain from Texas up into the Ohio Valley.
01:41Well, it stays pretty warm in the southeast, and a sneak peek at April temperatures.
01:45The heat continues in the western half of the country,
01:47while still kind of chilly in the northern plains, the Great Lakes, and the northeast.
01:53All right, Joe, good stuff.
01:54We appreciate that.
01:55Joe is the wizard of long-range forecasting.
01:57He and Paul Pastelock and others, they're on top of it.
