After a return to winter weather across the Northeast earlier this week, warmth is steadily returning.
Transcript
00:00To the northeast now, where winter just is not letting go quite yet.
00:04Yeah, this is kind of an interesting pileup of ice on Oneida Lake in upstate New York.
00:09You're not too far from there, right?
00:11Yeah.
00:12Familiar real estate?
00:13Very familiar real estate, yes.
00:15And my first thought, similar but different to ice jams and rivers that we've been talking about.
00:20Yeah, it's kind of like an ice dune of sorts.
00:22And there are areas where ice dunes sometimes are out there, out over part of the lake.
00:28This is kind of just a shove of where the ice has congregated from pushes of that lake water and
00:35sheets of ice earlier in the season.
00:38That's what's left behind there.
00:39All right, let's take a look at our snow depth map as of this morning.
00:42We got reverted back to winter mode behind that Monday front.
00:46That Monday front was nasty with that tenacious wind.
00:49And several tornadoes have been confirmed now between Maryland and Delaware so far from the event there on Monday evening.
00:59With also widespread winds that clocked over 70 miles per hour in parts of the New York metro.
01:04But behind that, a rapid changeover from rain to snow.
01:07Painted some more snow onto the ground there and has been preserved by the cold over the past 24 hours.
01:11So tonight we have another nippy night, but you'll notice our overnight lows not as cold.
01:17A lot of us are down into the teens.
01:18Some had your coldest night in 30 plus days going back to mid-February.
01:24Big snap back to the really cold air.
01:26But tonight we will see temperatures moderate.
01:29So again, we had a big rise during the day.
01:31The drop off tonight won't be as substantial.
01:33We'll be in the 20s in most areas for lows.
01:3534 in D.C., 34 Pittsburgh, and then mid-30s into Indianapolis.
01:38But down to 12 again tonight up in Presque Isle, Maine.
01:41We're going to be warming up, though, slowly day after day.
01:44Thursday, more orange on the map.
01:45The surge of warmth begins to nose in.
01:48A little bit of light snow to the north.
01:49Rain showers kick through parts of the eastern Ohio Valley.
01:53That slides east.
01:54A new system comes in on Friday.
01:55This one encounters even warmer air.
01:58So it's rain showers for the New York Thruway.
02:01Saturday, a disturbance offshore.
02:03Really, it actually will be that low that zips down Friday, crossing the region.
02:07And by the time we get to Saturday, it will still be bringing some light rain showers
02:11to parts of Long Island, southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeast Massachusetts.
02:16But most of us elsewhere will be dry.
02:18And then the warmth winds out.
02:19It's a big surge of warming for most, not all of us, but most of us on Saturday.
02:24We're intentionally not coloring the New England states in orange, though.
02:28You're going to stay chillier.
02:30But other areas will be warming up nicely.
02:32And you're going to get a little warmer in Maine and New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts,
02:37Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
02:38But it won't be as warm as your neighbors to the southwest.
02:40So again, storm by storm, here we are with this weak disturbance for Thursday afternoon and evening.
02:45A little bit of light snow mixed with some rain in the Mohawk Valley, perhaps.
02:48A new system comes in on Friday evening.
02:51This one is kind of a quick shot.
02:54It could bring some thunderstorms to Ohio and Pennsylvania, but not severe.
02:57Just maybe a rumble of thunder for some.
02:59And that scoots east.
03:00There's the lingering Saturday morning showers in southern New England.
03:03Sunday to Monday, this is a stronger front that kicks through.
03:06Rain for most, perhaps according to an inch of snow in some areas to the north of Interstate 90.
03:12And that one's going to be followed by a bit of a chill down again.
03:15So colder air will follow just for the beginning of next week.
03:18And then we'll have some light snow up to the north that time.
03:20Snow showers.
03:21But no big storms.
03:22No big storms on the map regarding severe thunderstorms or snow.
