00:00The Supreme Court has allowed passive euthanasia for Harish Rana from Ghaziabad,
00:04setting a historic legal precedent.
00:06Harish was a student in Chandigarh in 2013 when he fell from the fourth floor of his hostel,
00:11suffering a severe brain injury.
00:13Since then, he has remained completely unconscious for 13 years,
00:16with no movement and no chance of recovery.
00:19After years of watching their son suffer, his parents approached the Supreme Court,
00:23asking for permission to withdraw life support.
00:26Doctors at Ames Delhi confirmed there was no possibility of improvement,
00:29During the hearing, Justice J.B. Pardewala called it an extremely difficult decision,
00:35but said keeping someone alive in endless suffering cannot always be humane.
00:41The court ruled that withdrawing certain medical support systems
00:44can be legally and ethically allowed under passive euthanasia guidelines.
00:49At the same time, the Supreme Court also urged the central government
00:52to bring a clear law on euthanasia in India.
00:56This case raises a difficult question for society.
00:59Should the right to die with dignity be part of the right to life?
