A fresh controversy has erupted in Meerut after a 29-second audio clip of Brahmapuri Circle Officer Soumya Asthana surfaced on social media. In the clip, she is allegedly heard directing subordinates to immediately register a case if a journalist engages in videography inside a police station.

The viral audio has sparked widespread discussion, prompting a clarification from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey. The SSP stated that the directive was not aimed at accredited journalists but at certain “portal owners” who were allegedly recording unnecessary videos inside the premises. He clarified that there is no blanket restriction on the media.

The issue reportedly pertains to an incident at the TP Nagar Police Station. Attempts to contact CO Soumya Asthana for her response were unsuccessful.

From a legal standpoint, media videography inside a police station is generally not treated as a violation under the Official Secrets Act. Courts have clarified that a police station does not qualify as a “prohibited place” under Section 2(8) of the Act. However, recording must not obstruct official duties or interfere with ongoing investigations.

In an official statement, Meerut Police said the viral audio clip was partial and did not reflect the full context. According to police, the matter involved an unrecognized portal operator who was recording a private conversation between two parties inside the station. The Circle Officer had reportedly issued guidelines to ensure compliance with the Uttar Pradesh Police Social Media Policy 2023.

Police officials have said efforts are underway to clear any confusion arising from the viral clip, while discussions on the limits of media access inside police premises continue.
