Cannon Fired From Raisen Fort, ‘Pro-Iran’ Slogans in Viral Video Spark Row in Madhya Pradesh

A video showing youths firing a cannon and allegedly raising pro-Iran slogans from the historic Raisen Fort in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh has gone viral on social media, triggering controversy and prompting an official inquiry.

According to reports, the youths had gathered at the fort’s ramparts during Ramadan to fire a cannon traditionally used to signal the time for Iftar (breaking the fast). However, in the viral video, some of the youths are allegedly heard shouting slogans expressing support for Iran while recording a reel.

The video quickly spread online and drew objections from authorities as well as members of the National Human Rights Commission.

NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo raised concerns over the incident on social media, alleging that firing an illegal indigenous cannon from a protected archaeological site could endanger civilian lives and damage heritage structures. He also questioned the role of officials from the Archaeological Survey of India and the local administration, stating that strict action should be taken if laws were violated.

Kanoongo further said that notices are being prepared seeking action and accountability from officials if negligence is found.

Following the controversy, local authorities confirmed that the matter is under investigation. Bharat Mandre, Tehsildar of Raisen, said the viral video has been forwarded to the Kotwali Police Station Raisen for verification and necessary legal action.

Police have reportedly arrested Shadaab Qureshi, Yusuf Sheikh, Wasim Mohammad, and Salman Qureshi in connection with the incident.

Officials said that the cannon is traditionally fired during Ramadan to announce Suhoor and Iftar timings, for which a temporary licence is sometimes issued by the administration for about a month. Authorities are now verifying whether the cannon used in the video was legally permitted and whether any laws were violated.

The administration is also examining the authenticity of the viral clip, as claims have emerged that older videos may have been included in the social media post.
