00:00Quincy Williams signing with the Browns now reported as of this morning two years 13 million
00:05dollar deal a direct result of Devin Bush now signing with the Chicago Bears or intending to
00:09sign with the Chicago Bears on a three-year 30 million dollar deal I believe it was
00:17immediate immediate reaction when I see Devin Bush go his own out right like I mean that was a guy
00:21who 125 tackles last year was and played with his hair on fire easily the best year of his career
00:27I mean he was a guy that you identified that hey the money might go up but it might be
00:32worth to
00:32have Devin Bush here just because he basically fills the exact need that you need in that spot
00:37in this defense so immediately red flag goes up Devin Bush isn't here where do they turn to next
00:43Andrew Barry had it basically knocked out and like what felt like I think about two hours
00:48Devin Bush is gone Quincy Williams you're in to the point where I mean I talked about it last night
00:53to
00:53open up the show I looked at it it's no worse than maybe a lateral move from Devin Bush to
00:58Quincy Williams assuming obviously health is there for both guys it's a two-time all pro that's a guy
01:04who four straight years prior to this last year where he dealt with an injury was up over 105 tackles
01:09like yeah he's a guy that plays downhill and I mean picks up a ton of tackles and plays fast
01:15he's basically exactly what you're asking Devin Bush to do it feels like all over again yeah I mean
01:19you basically swapped players really less money too by the way for less money and they basically
01:26can do the same thing so uh this is a a former uh all pro okay at his position uh
01:33you're gonna pay
01:34him a little less than what you would have had to pay uh Devin Bush I think he I and
01:39coach could
01:39probably speak to this a little more than me because he's breaks down the film but I I think he'll
01:43fit
01:44really well next to Carson Schlesinger um and and and then that's you know when you're looking at the
01:51defensive side of the ball and you're pairings matter and and I think that Williams will fit in
01:57perfectly with with Carson and give them the same production if not even maybe a little more
02:04explosive playmaking production than they got from Devin Bush so I think this is uh potentially
02:09you know we spent a lot of time talking about the offensive line and understandably so because
02:14of the makeover that that uh room needed but I really think that this might be the sneaky best
02:20signing uh for the Browns this offseason well I tell you what in the thing you know going on what
02:25you said Daryl you know his he blitz is better than Devin Bush all right now there's a couple things
02:30that won't go uh you know people won't understand but you're right Devin Bush is not a very vocal guy
02:36so Carson Schlesinger had to be that vocal leader as a rookie and be the guy who makes all the
02:40tackles and by the way did a phenomenal job just incredible now he's got a guy who's going to bring
02:46some of that leadership especially during the week in practice and stuff but yes skill wise you're
02:50talking about the defense playing downhill and the thing that Quincy does so so well is he pulls the
02:56trigger and in this defense you're not you're you're reading and reacting but you have to believe what
03:01you see and you gotta go and that's what he does as well and probably better you know I'm a
03:07huge
03:07Devin Bush fan but picking up Quincy Williams to me that's uh it might be not only is it cheaper
03:12but
03:12it might be an upgrade an upgrade it really might be just because of the experience and the leadership
03:18he's going to bring he comes off the edge if you want to blitz him he's a very good blitzer
03:22I mean coach
03:23I got I got pointed out to uh on social media after we talked about it a clip from 2024
03:27with him
03:28blitzing on Kyler Murray yeah popped his helmet right off I mean one of the more explosive hits
03:32that I've seen and he's just a guy he plays with great energy great passion he fits the mold of
03:36this defense and once again I I'm all for and I've said I tweeted out earlier this week you know
03:40Devin Bush had a great year but part of that and credit to him but the the scheme helped him
03:46and
03:46sometimes when you go to a different scheme it might not be the same for Devin Bush and I'll tell
03:50you
03:50what Quincy Williams is now coming to a scheme that is going to maximize his talent so he's played in
03:56good he's been with the Jets and he's played in some really good schemes but this is a scheme
04:00they're going to turn him loose he's going to be a very very good player and he's going to take
04:04some of that leadership responsibility off of Swessinger who again has just played way above
04:09his years but now he can play a little bit too without having to get everybody lined up he's going
04:14to have a running mate that can get everybody lined up as well it's really interesting because
04:17the two guys in very different spots obviously Devin coming off of a career year Quincy's coming off of
04:22almost like a career low year at least within the last like five or six years for him uh because
04:27he dealt with the injury and then when he had returned from injury didn't really have the same
04:31level of production I think ended up getting even maybe like benched a little bit with New York
04:35and not playing as much now you question how much of that was how much did New York want to
04:39win
04:39football games there's yeah I mean this is the other part of when you're talking about players that
04:44you know go go through uh you know those those downturns right uh you know place matters where
04:52you're playing matters the situation the environment matters let's be honest about it uh the Jets have
05:00been the dumpster fire the NFL more consistently I mean as much as the Browns have been like the Jets
05:07have been like on a whole nother level right um and so I I think that that plays into uh
05:14you know
05:16the drop off if you will and when he came back to I mean it was post the Quinn and
05:21Williams sauce
05:21Gardner trade there where the Jets were just acquiring picks I mean we not only saw his play drop off
05:26we saw like Jermaine Johnson's play drop you had less talent around you like it was bound to the numbers
05:31weren't going to look the same the defense wasn't going to look the same it makes a lot of sense
05:35and I don't think I want to put a ton of really value into him getting benched either just because
05:40of where that Jets team was at what made the most sense for them I mean organizationally if they
05:44want to sit there and go um you know maybe pulling Quincy off the the field might give us a
05:48worse
05:48chance to win football games I don't put it beyond any franchise that was in their spot to go we
05:53might
05:53want to lose games which they again signaled very clearly when they traded away their two best
05:57defensive players inarguably in Quinn and Williams in sauce well you know and think about uh the Jets when
06:03you get to the point where they're at um if you're throwing games if you're tanking everybody knows
06:08that right so that affects not only is he not playing well in the game but that affects practice
06:12that affects morale that affects how they approach the game the attention to detail so is the is the
06:18linebacker coach is the defensive coordinator are they breaking down the film like they should are
06:23they going over tendencies you would hope so in the NFL but something's going on because you watch
06:28the film and you watch him from 23 when he had 135 plus tackles this is a guy who can
06:32play this guy who
06:33plays with a hair on fire but I think in this scheme he'll even be better because once again
06:37these linebackers are going to be asked to clean up the mess that the Browns really good front for
06:42uh you know creates and now they're going to have two really good guys and Devin Bush was like that
06:47too but again you're getting I think you might even get an upgrade uh but it at the worst it's
06:52going
06:52to be lateral another really good year uh with a really good linebacker and you want to talk about
06:56you know how does Quincy Williams end up here how does he pick it well Mike Rutenberg who's your current
07:01defensive coordinator was over with the Jets played with Quincy Williams and had actually talked
07:05about him uh earlier on in this offseason when we got to listen to the coordinators and Daryl as you
07:11posted on social media uh Quincy was mentioned by name I go to Quincy Williams was in Jacksonville
07:17with Quincy and we drafted him Quincy and I connected from the heart from the start it went heart to
07:22football and we spent a lot of time on our hearts and a lot of time on football I mean
07:27listen it was a
07:27short clip Daryl I think you mentioned that there were a couple other players thrown out in the
07:31elongated clip of that yeah it was it was a three minute soundbite that I cut down into the this
07:36the 16 minutes because he mentioned a bunch of other players in there as well uh that was in response
07:41he was again uh circled back to uh building relationships with players and you know because
07:47the whole narrative about hey you know everyone in the defensive room really love Jim Schwartz what are
07:52you gonna do about that right these guys actually gonna play hard for you is the like they did
07:56Schwartz and and so this was later in the press conference circling back to that very topic about
08:01relationship building and look I mean the NFL is a very incestuous league look at what's happened in
08:06Atlanta with Kevin Stavansky he's got the band back together coaches former players I don't know that
08:11he should be going back to the former player well because well they weren't you know they were okay
08:14here in Cleveland but like again the Browns didn't win a lot here right uh so um and and so
08:22uh players
08:23and GMs I I'm Eric Mangini brought every over the hill New York Jet New England Patriot that he could
08:30find what the two years he was here to just kind of because he wanted to instill the Mangini way
08:37in
08:37the locker room so he'd bring those familiar faces so um and you see this all across the league uh
08:45John Harbaugh in New York trying to poach from the Ravens right and bring guys from Baltimore to New York
08:51or guys he played against right Greg Newsome whom he played against it brought they the Giants agreed
08:58to to sign him uh today so um you know it's not just a mutual admiration society it's not just
09:05a
09:05respect thing it's a familiarity thing it's a hey I'm gonna bring in guys that know how I do it
09:11and
09:11will do it my way okay and and so um those relationships do matter and you know we sarcastically
09:21talk about you know uh the the pre-draft process and the top 30 visits and you know why would
09:28you do
09:28a top 30 visit with a guy that you have no intention of drafting or whatever and a lot of
09:32times you'll
09:32do it with the quarterbacks you want to build a book on them right try and figure out what makes
09:36them
09:36tick a little bit maybe there's a little something something when you play against them you can use
09:39against them right and really uh pick at or if the player eventually becomes available in the trade
09:44or free agency you go back hey uh back when we were going through the draft process we we interviewed
09:49this guy we brought him in let's go back to our notes and and look so relationships matter a lot
09:54around the National Football League between players and coaches and executives and that's why again
09:58when you see the merry-go-round of coaches and players and or coaches and GMs I should say going
10:05to new
10:05spots they're always going back and wanting to bring in the familiar faces and and and Quincy happens to
10:12be one of those familiar faces that Mike Rutenberg is very familiar with very comfortable with
10:18and uh is also a very good player and I think that that's going to resonate through that defensive
10:24room uh as far as you know helping him extend that olive branch to guys like Miles Garrett and Carson
10:32Schlesinger and Denzel Ward who truly loved playing for Jim Schwartz I mean I think that's a big point
10:40like you point out the fact that you know not only is it because if you're Mike Rutenberg take over
10:44this
10:44defense you don't have a ton of control to bring in you know a ton of even your guys because
10:48it's pretty much the whole the whole defensive staff was pretty much uh kept intact I think uh they
10:54they brought in a new assistant defensive line coach they you know they they they gave promotional
10:59titles uh to uh Jason Tarver and Ephraim Banda both of those guys I expect are going to be defensive
11:06coordinators within the next two coaching cycles okay um but yeah I mean he he walked in and
11:12the deep the the roster and the defensive coaching staff pretty much intact and he's just kind of
11:20taking the thing over I mean listen not a bad spot to be I mean if you take that over
11:25good defense but
11:26then having a guy who should be one of your tackle leaders on your team should be a guy that
11:30obviously
11:30you know coach pointed to leadership and like you said kind of a guy to almost bridge that gap it's
11:35not
11:35a good spot in this regard though it better work well there's like you know I mean there's a lot
11:41of
11:42pressure on him now because unlike the offensive side where you're having to build it right there
11:48you you legit have to build the right the defensive side's already built and the expectation is for
11:55Rutenberg just to pick up the baton and keep running with it and if there's significant drop off on that
12:01side of the ball I think coach can speak to this more than I can but I think there's tremendous
12:06pressure on Mike Rutenberg tremendous oh there's because you're right it's already been done all
12:12right and a lot of time most of the time when you come in as a coach it's because what
12:16you're taking
12:16over has been terrible that's how most coaches are unless you're you know that's so not when you come
12:21in this situation is even harder when you come into with success because now you're expected to keep
12:26that I think what Quincy Williams does for this this defense is that he gives a letter a level of
12:32credibility to Rutenberg because he can come in and say hey this works but there's also terminology
12:37there's there's small things throughout practice and meetings uh how he runs meetings how he runs
12:42practice his expectations of how things should be done he can kind of echo that to the uh to the
12:48veterans right and uh Ruenberg doesn't seem like a guy he's he's not a uh you know watching and going
12:53back and learning him he's not a my way or the highway it's we're going to do it our way
12:57we're
12:57going to play with our hair on fire all the time and I think having a guy like Quincy Williams
13:01should
13:02kind of just bridge the gap between what he wants to do the success they've had and then he can
13:07kind
13:07of help with terminology and expectations more throughout the week than even more than on game
13:13day yeah yeah I mean big stuff obviously Quincy Williams a big pickup
