00:00Yeah, you're in the loop here on Sports Radio 610.
00:03We got a real treat here.
00:05It's the Trilogy, Port Arthur's own, Houston's underground king.
00:10I was like, I feel like you've had all of the introductions that can be had,
00:13so I'll cut it short.
00:14It's the man.
00:15I thought you were talking about the food.
00:16It's the man.
00:17Me too.
00:18How we doing, guys?
00:19It's the man Bun-B here with us, man.
00:20We are doing great.
00:21Even better that you are here, especially because this room,
00:25we work with a whole bunch of dudes.
00:26It's not always the most fragrant.
00:28It smells of fantastic food right now because you brought us on.
00:31I made sure to come with gifts.
00:32We appreciate that.
00:33That's why I'm always welcome in a lot of places.
00:35I bring food.
00:36I try to bring gifts.
00:37I feel like there's that, right?
00:39You're a very successful restaurateur here.
00:42You used them on top of you being a musical legend
00:44and just an ambassador for the city.
00:46I want to see if we can find a way to get to all of that in our time here.
00:50I think we should start with, let's start with the business,
00:52and then we can have some fun.
00:53How does that sound?
00:54Is this year two or year three with Trill Town at Rodeo?
00:59This is year two with Trill Town,
01:01but this is our fifth year presenting food at the Rodeo.
01:06We did two years at Restaurant Row with Trill Burgers.
01:13Then on the third year,
01:15they asked us if we would want to move to a new area that had opened.
01:19I believe it was the old Miller Lite section of the rodeo,
01:23and they moved on either to another section,
01:26or I don't know if they're involved anymore.
01:28But they offered us the space, 9,000 square feet.
01:31We jumped at the opportunity.
01:34Because not only did it give us a chance to sell more food,
01:37but also build out more of an experience for people.
01:41So we get the burgers.
01:42We get the tenders.
01:43We're doing the lemonades this year.
01:45We're adding for the first time soft serve ice cream at the Rodeo.
01:50Especially on them hot days.
01:51Go get you some ice cream with it.
01:52I love it.
01:53The Trill Lemonades are back again with a brand new flavor,
01:56Desert Pear Lemonade.
01:58So that's something that we're debuting exclusively at the Rodeo.
02:02And back with more merchandise, the DJ booth again.
02:05So we're going to have a couple of DJs come out
02:07and put on some performances this weekend.
02:10Well, we're going to do the first one tonight, Tuesday.
02:13Marco Torres is going to DJ after Jay Balvin's performance at Drill Town.
02:17And it's H-Town.
02:18I mean, it's just a match that's obvious for you to be there, right?
02:22No, absolutely.
02:23I mean, I don't know if it gets more Houston culturally than the Rodeo
02:27because of the idea of almost everyone that represents every facet of Houston
02:32at some point ends up at the Rodeo during the 21 days.
02:36And for us, that's a great opportunity to present these products to people
02:40because I'd have to do 100 pop-ups around Houston,
02:43as large as this city is, to touch as many people as I do with the Rodeo.
02:48So it's a great opportunity for me.
02:50It's a great opportunity for all Houstonians to go out, embrace the culture,
02:55put on your boots, and go out, have a good time,
02:57and eat all of the amazing food.
02:59I'm not the only great food there, but we do pretty good.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Pretty good.
03:02That does make me want to ask you.
03:04And we'll have more time to ask kind of these quick-fire questions.
03:07Bun B, the thing that you have to get when you go to Rodeo is?
03:13I almost said something I can't say.
03:15Oh, okay.
03:16All right.
03:16Okay.
03:16I was going to say drunk.
03:19No, that's a great answer.
03:20You can say that.
03:21You can say that.
03:22But no, no.
03:23I would say get full.
03:24Like, there is so much amazing food that's presented at the Rodeo on so many levels.
03:30Hand food, some sit-down food, little food, big food.
03:34You know what I'm saying?
03:34You can go anywhere from, you know, getting just some cotton candy or some funnel cakes
03:39or a turkey leg to getting, you know, a $200-plus steak at 1932 Cattle Club.
03:44Yeah.
03:44You know?
03:45So, the whole spectrum of dining is available at the Rodeo.
03:49So, we just try to find our little niche, which I think we figured it out.
03:53Yeah.
03:53You know what I'm saying?
03:53And our own little experience that we have at Trill Town.
03:56And just try to make sure that the culture of Houston is represented and all facets of
04:01Houston feels well.
04:02I want to get into some other things here.
04:04Obviously, we'll get back to that.
04:04But I remember watching you at NRG one day, and somebody asked me this question, so I'm
04:10going to ask you.
04:11What song do you, they said, what song do you think Bun B gets pumped up before a game?
04:17Like, athletes are always like, I got to listen to this before a game.
04:19I got to listen to this before a game.
04:20What would you listen to?
04:21I mean, look, I'm a Thunderstruck guy.
04:24I always, I remember, you know, following this team and hearing Thunderstruck play.
04:29And, you know, other cities are arguing about who has the rights to these songs.
04:32We're all trying to get our hands on good music to pump up the fans.
04:35But then, but then Welcome to Texas is always one that gets me pumped as well.
04:41You know what I'm saying?
04:42Well, I'm sorry.
04:42Now, Welcome to Houston.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Welcome to Houston.
04:44Because that's got like seven or eight guys that represent the culture on it.
04:48But those two songs really get me pumped.
04:49That's pretty cool.
04:50And ACDC really gets me pumped.
04:52You know, and it used to be, I tell you what, it used to get me cranked up.
04:55We don't really have that campaign anymore, but I used to play Rage Against the Machine,
04:59Parade of Bulls.
04:59Yeah, Bulls on Parade.
05:01Yeah, Bulls on Parade.
05:01Bulls on Parade.
05:02Yeah.
05:03So that one gets you pumped.
05:04Figgy's in the music industry a little bit, and Anna has a question for you.
05:07I was going to ask you about, so this is the first year you haven't performed at the Houston
05:12Lifestyle Show on Rodeo.
05:14Do it feel weird?
05:15And how much pressure was it to make each show better throughout the years?
05:20Look, there's the pros of it is that I don't have to stress over the booking of these artists.
05:26I don't think a lot of people know this, Figgy, that I put the show on.
05:29Like, the show, I wasn't just like the emcee of the show, right?
05:33Like, I would pick, you know, my team and I would pick the artists we wanted to bring.
05:38I would have to pay those artists.
05:39Like, I would get paid a fee for the rodeo, and then I would take my money and spend it
05:43on other artists to bring people in because I wanted to give people a fully rounded performance
05:49that incorporated a lot of different facets that I didn't necessarily represent.
05:53So that's why I always had multiple artists at the rodeo so that there was a little something
05:57for everybody there.
05:59And outside of the money, right, because the rodeo paid very well, it is a lot less stress.
06:05I'll be honest.
06:06It is a lot less stress.
06:07And it does allow me more time to really lock in and focus on Trill Town.
06:12But, yeah, no, having to worry about if certain people made their flight, if guys are going
06:17to show up in time for sound check and all that stuff, are the mics going to work, is
06:21the sound going to go out?
06:22That stuff used to be very stressful.
06:24So outside of the money that I used to make, man, it's really fun to actually sit back and
06:29watch the rodeo itself, you know, the carnival side of it, the fairground areas, you know,
06:35the petting zoo, all of these other facets, you know, because I got grandkids now.
06:40So I get to actually enjoy everything.
06:42But it's funny because my grandson called on Sunday and told my wife, he was like, his
06:48boots are too small.
06:49And I was like, I need some new boots so I can get ready to go see Papa at the
06:52rodeo.
06:52Yeah.
06:53And we realized that my grandkids really don't know the rodeo without me.
06:59Yeah.
06:59So they were like, yeah, we got to get ready to see Papa perform.
07:02We're like, no, he's not performing this year.
07:04So what are they, like three or four?
07:05How old are they?
07:06So they range from, my oldest is 17, so she gets it.
07:09Yeah.
07:09But the grandson I'm talking about, he's about to be 10 years old this year.
07:12And they just started going to the rodeo.
07:15We just started going back when, you know, I went as a child.
07:17Yeah.
07:18But in my adult life, we didn't really go there.
07:20You know, it wasn't a lot of things marketed to us in that way.
07:22A lot of the music was like 106 and Park or like Anita Baker kind of.
07:27So I'm in the middle.
07:28So it wasn't really targeted to me.
07:30But now the rodeo gives something available.
07:32It's available for everybody.
07:33Sure.
07:34You know what I'm saying?
07:34And now we get to enjoy that this year.
07:36I get to go out and watch some other shows.
07:37I would never have been able to go to see, like, J Balvin and I, you know what I'm saying,
07:42if I had my show on Friday.
07:43I'd be doing a rehearsal.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Right.
07:47So I had put together a game for you, Trill or not Trill.
07:50Okay.
07:50Obviously, but I'll get into one of them.
07:53And if you have a little bit more time to hang out with this, I might get into some more
07:56of them.
07:57I'm here, man.
07:57You mentioned you being a grandfather.
07:59And so I'm not speaking about anybody in particular.
08:01However, is Trill or not Trill dipping out on a once a year event for fishing with your
08:07granddaughter?
08:08Trill or not Trill?
08:08That's true.
08:09That's true.
08:11Because you really have to understand that they're both one once a year thing.
08:17You know, maybe you go fishing more than often, or maybe you do other activities, but you
08:22can't replicate those moments.
08:24Every experience that you have with every grandchild or child, for that matter, is going
08:28to be unique in its own thing.
08:30Some things that you do and some moments you share with your son will probably be somewhat
08:35different when you share either those moments or other moments with your daughter.
08:39And the same thing goes for grandkids.
08:40You know the personality of the kids.
08:42You know what they like, what they're into.
08:44And you try to share and encourage them in their direction, right?
08:47The things that they love and push them into, you know, making sure that they're confident
08:51about how they present themselves in the world and what they choose to enjoy in this world.
08:55You, sir, are the man.
08:56Because that was me he was talking about.
08:59Myself and Figgy wanted to go to cook-off with him.
09:01He's a big barbecue guy and knows a lot of the folks that are doing the competition.
09:05And we were like, hey, man, you going to take us?
09:07And he was like, yeah, but, you know, baby girl wants to go fishing.
09:09And so, and by the way, I was telling him this last year.
09:13I kept telling him last year, like, we going with you.
09:16Hey, she's three and a half years old and said, hop, hop, take me fishing.
09:20You know, that's the thing.
09:21Of course.
09:22That's the thing that can start a lifetime passion.
09:24That's right.
09:25You know what I'm saying?
09:25I saw a video on social media where it was a little girl.
09:28She was like, at 10 years old, my dad took me to a wrestling event.
09:33And then she joined a wrestling club.
09:35Oh, yeah.
09:35And then you see her 15 years later in a professional wrestler.
09:40And then five years after that, like winning the belt.
09:42You are the man.
09:43Winning the championship.
09:43So, just the idea that her father decided to take her to that one event changed the absolute
09:50total direction of life for this young lady.
09:52So, you never know.
09:53A little Texans talk here.
09:55A little Houston sports talk.
09:56Let's do it.
09:57Obviously, C.J. Stroud making a lot of news in the postseason.
10:01What would you tell him right now?
10:02Because it is, as you well know, you're around town.
10:05I mean, it is loud with C.J.
10:07Look, I would tell him anything that I'm sure New York, Knicks organizations tell their fans,
10:15right, look, there's going to be criticism.
10:16No one is perfect in this sport.
10:18You know what I'm saying?
10:19But you've got to take winning games and losing games with a grain of salt.
10:23You know what I'm saying?
10:24Because as soon as they can love you and cherish you and hold you high, just as soon
10:28they can trash you and try to tear you down.
10:30You've got another full season of football coming up.
10:33Hopefully, we go into it healthy.
10:35Hopefully, we get the people that we need back, like the Joe Mixons.
10:37You know what I'm saying?
10:38We get the Tank Dells back.
10:40But most important, we've got to give this guy a strong, consistent offensive line.
10:47You know what I'm saying?
10:48Yes, he made some mistakes, but also there were other players that made mistakes.
10:52This was a very new offensive line for this team.
10:56They're trying to get it to work out.
10:58Some things did.
10:58Some things didn't.
10:59Now, we've already lost two more.
11:02Two of those guys.
11:03Yeah.
11:03So, we're probably going to be rebuilding this offensive line almost from scratch.
11:09So, hopefully, these draft picks that we're getting, fourth round, I think one's a fourth,
11:15one's a fifth.
11:16Yeah.
11:16Hopefully, we can utilize that to bring in some talent, but we've just got to, you know,
11:20we've just got to protect the quarterback.
11:22You know, I know he's gotten a lot of criticism.
11:24I know he didn't perform as well as we would have liked him to perform, but he's going to
11:29be back here, you know, whether you like it or not.
11:31And it's easy to dislike a quarterback after they lose, but when the season starts back
11:35up again, we'll be excited about football.
11:37We'll look at some changes that we've made.
11:39Obviously, bringing in David Montgomery, I think, is a great, great decision.
11:42You know, he's a head-down guy, you know, just kind of runs that thing straight down
11:46the middle, and he's going to be great for the goal line, which was a problem for us
11:49in the red zone, turning the red zone possessions into touchdowns.
11:53So, I think David Montgomery is going to be a great addition.
11:55Hopefully, we get Joe back fully healthy, you know what I'm saying, by committee, find
11:59a way to keep Woody Marks just in case one of those guys go down.
12:02But either way, we're going to need a younger back in the backfield at some point.
12:06But I'm excited about the potential of this team.
12:08I think Nick and those guys are going to turn it around, give Coach what he needs.
12:12You know what I'm saying, to put out on the field and present the best version of this
12:15team that we know we can see, try to retain as much of that all-star, superstar defense
12:20that we had last year.
12:22We want to try to retain as many of those guys as possible, and then make sure we're
12:26scheming right.
12:27Like, just because we can get those players back, we still got to scheme right, and we
12:30still got to be prepared on the field.
12:31And keep in mind, a lot of those big guns are coming back.
12:35You know what I'm saying?
12:35Next year, you will not have that path that doesn't go through a Josh Allen, that doesn't
12:40go through a Patrick Mahomes.
12:41You know what I'm saying?
12:42Daniel Jones wasn't there this year.
12:44Lamar Jackson wasn't there this year.
12:46You know what I'm saying?
12:47The Jaguars are playing pretty good football over there, and I think Liam Cones is going
12:51to figure some things out.
12:52They're going to present an even better product on the field.
12:55Running, I don't know, because if they let Etienne go, it's going to be tough to replace
12:58him.
12:59But I think our conference is going to come back stronger, but we've got to be prepared to
13:04not just be as good as we were at our best moments last year, but be prepared to be
13:08better, because we're going to have tougher competition.
13:10Yeah.
13:10Yeah.
