00:00honest with you, I'm not sure, Tyler, if it's a reaction Monday, but hell, I'm reacting
00:03to whatever the hell has happened throughout the day, a crazy day here, two big Texan stories,
00:10one player coming in, one player going out, let's start with the player coming in, Clint,
00:15we first heard the news as we talked about in the crosstalk of Titus Howard, but the latest thing
00:20as Reggie went ahead and shared with everybody here on Sports Radio 610, that the Lions,
00:26they are trading their running back, David Montgomery, to the Texans for what is now
00:33being looked at as a fourth round pick, a seventh round pick, and guard Juice Scruggs, who they took,
00:39we were there when they took Juice in the second round, they moved up to go get him, they have
00:44made that move to bring in David Montgomery, as we said, giving up a fourth, a seventh,
00:50and Juice Scruggs, by the way, according to Aaron Wilson, the Texans' new running back,
00:56David Montgomery contract stays the same for now, but likely to be addressed later at some point,
01:03after the trade is officially finalized, hearing that he is very happy with the trade, healthy,
01:08played every game last year, and is under contract for two more years.
01:13Montgomery will be 29 June 7th, so he'll be 29 in training camp, he played 17 games, we said,
01:19716 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns, 24 catches, 192 yards, no touchdowns there.
01:26Clint, your thoughts about them bringing in David Montgomery, and potentially, I'm guessing,
01:32obviously, this means the end for Joe Mixon, and this looks like this is going to fill the void of
01:40the running back spot.
01:42Yeah, I love this on so many levels, man. I'm a big David Montgomery fan, love his style.
01:49I think you're picking up a back that a team's letting go, because arguably the best back in the league
01:55is getting more of the workload, and he, understandably so, has seen his carries decline
01:59over the last couple of years, and wants to go somewhere where he could be at least a 1A,
02:04if not just a straight-up 1. And so, you're not taking somebody's leftovers,
02:08you're literally taking a guy that lost his quote-unquote 1A job to, again,
02:15what I would argue is one of, if not the best back in the league right now, in Jameer Gibbs.
02:21And so, I think it's benefit Houston on that front. You're getting a really, really good back.
02:26I think he complements your existing back in Woody Marks to a T.
02:30You're talking about a downhill, more physical, between-the-tackles type runner,
02:35and now that shifts Woody Marks into a position where I believe he fits better,
02:39is a change of pace back, a third down back, catching the ball out of the backfield.
02:43Both of these guys are absolutely tremendous at pass protection.
02:46And so, your 1-2 punch, your 1A, 1B, however you want to slice it,
02:50with David Montgomery and Woody Marks, I think is absolutely tremendous.
02:54When you look at what you had to give up to get him, who cares, right?
02:58For one, I'll be honest with you, I love the fact that the Texans thought
03:01they were getting David Montgomery for a 5,
03:03and apparently the Denver Broncos stepped in and said,
03:05no, no, no, we're going to up to Annie a little bit.
03:07You're going to have to, we're going to at least cost you a few more.
03:10Somebody else, another playoff team, another one of the better up-and-coming
03:13AFC teams wanting David Montgomery, I think is a good sign for the Texans.
03:18I don't care that it went from a 5 to a 4.
03:20I don't care that they threw a 7 in.
03:22I don't care that Juice Scruggs is thrown in.
03:24He couldn't even get into the 2-deep last year on a team that was begging,
03:29that needed, desperately needed.
03:30Couldn't get past 62.
03:31Couldn't get past 62.
03:33So, yeah, I mean, it's just, so I absolutely love the move.
03:37I said it before, I want the Texans to be aggressive at the running back position.
03:41I think they identified who they wanted.
03:44They went after him.
03:45They had the up to Annie to go get him, and now he's in here with Woody Marks.
03:48The running back room is in really, really good shape right now.
03:51It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do more.
03:54It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't find another veteran back in free agency
04:00or even find a young guy in the draft that they really like.
04:04But I love this David Montgomery move.
04:05You get him relatively cheap.
04:07The production that you expect to get out of David Montgomery is going to far.
04:11I think it's going to exceed the money you're going to have to pay him.
04:14You're going to actually save money, obviously, when you release Joe Mixon.
04:19So, yeah, man, the running back room for the Houston Texans,
04:23the running back position for the Houston Texans,
04:25the run game for the Houston Texans,
04:26I think all just got a huge shot in the arm in a good way.
04:30Look, as we're discussing, there's two big headlines today.
04:34Titus Howard being traded to the Browns.
04:36We'll get to that.
04:37And also when we look at what's going on with David Montgomery.
04:41We're talking about David Montgomery right now.
04:42He'll be 29 June 7th during training camp and throughout this year.
04:46He'll be 29 years old and 716 yards last year, eight rushing touchdowns,
04:52a lot of that in the red zone where he's really, really good,
04:55a strong, powerful back.
04:56I think this fits a lot closer to what they want to do,
05:01the way they want to run the football, how physical they want to be.
05:05I think this fits that, and he is a physical, physical runner.
05:09I have two questions.
05:10And 713-572-4610, those of you on the base power text line,
05:15YouTube and Twitch, you can jump in on this.
05:17I have two questions about this, Clint.
05:19And one is, now we don't know the answer to this yet,
05:24but is he the type of guy that can help an average offensive line?
05:29Right?
05:30That's something we talked about with is, all right, as you said,
05:33maybe it's hard to replace this many offensive linemen,
05:36but can you get a back that can make it better?
05:39And the backs we talked about, the Jeremiah Loves, the Brees Halls,
05:42the Kenneth Walkers, they can help.
05:45Is he that guy?
05:46Is he a guy that can help average line play?
05:48And is the Montgomery-Marks combination, is that good enough?
05:54Is that a good enough combination for them to do what they want to do?
05:58Because we got, keeping it honest,
06:00David Montgomery was not amongst the names that we have been talking about
06:04over the last week plus on the type of backs that they should add.
06:08Again, we talked about, if you could go get a Jeremiah Loves in the draft,
06:12make that happen.
06:12How about Travis Etienne is the name we've talked about.
06:16But Brees Hall was a dream.
06:18Kenneth Walker was a dream.
06:19Those are my two questions.
06:21Can he help an average offensive line?
06:23And is that combo good enough to do what they want to do?
06:26Yeah, look, I think before Dan Campbell came out and said,
06:30hey, man, we've got to get basically more touches for Jameer Gibbs.
06:34Again, we're talking about the most explosive back in the league,
06:37arguably the best back in the league right now.
06:39Before that moment, and before David Montgomery's numbers started to trend
06:43downward over the last couple of years because of that, right,
06:47all the guys you just mentioned were either, would have been,
06:50David Montgomery would have been mentioned probably ahead of,
06:53probably ahead of if we're being completely honest.
06:56I've never looked at Trevor Etienne and said, oh, boy, man,
06:59he's better than David Montgomery.
07:01Now, if we start getting off in the weeds and we start,
07:03oh, the numbers are coming down.
07:04Today?
07:04Right now?
07:05I would have thought.
07:06I would.
07:06No, I mean, I wouldn't at all.
07:09But even if you do, it's still a back.
07:11It's not an absolutely surefire, no question asked about it.
07:15They're in the same ballpark.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Well, I mean, but you've got one guy that was playing that split and carries
07:19with arguably the best back in the league,
07:21and another guy that it's been a carousel over there.
07:24He's a good player, really good player.
07:27I just, you know, I don't know.
07:29I think David Montgomery was thought to be one of the best power backs
07:32or downhill backs in the game, one of the better three-down backs in the game
07:36until Jameer Gibbs became Jameer Gibbs, and all of a sudden now it's, well,
07:41you know, Kenneth Walker wasn't Kenneth Walker three weeks ago.
07:43Now, all of a sudden, when Charbonnet goes down,
07:45Kenneth Walker's all of a sudden a $14 million guy, right?
07:47Like, I just, to me, I think all of that is a little bit fantasized right now.
07:51I think David Montgomery, to answer your question, Ron, the answer is yes and yes.
07:55That combo.
07:56The answer is yes and yes.
07:58To me, the answer is yes and yes.
08:00Yeah, he can help an average offensive line, absolutely.
08:02He is a guy that's going to be able to overcome.
08:05Everybody up front doesn't have to be perfect for David Montgomery
08:07to keep you ahead of the chains, which is exactly what this head coach
08:11and this general manager want the running back to do.
08:13Keep us ahead of the chains, right?
08:16I mean, what made Woody Marks so good
08:18and really allowed him to take over the running back room was
08:22the one, if there's any kind of leakage or whatever up front,
08:26he was able to make that guy miss and go get two yards, right?
08:29It wasn't the home run ability.
08:31Obviously, they weren't going to throw the football out of the backfield much.
08:33It was the ability to not let just leakage completely cause a negative play,
08:38and I think David Montgomery can do those things.
08:40I love the one-two punch with David Montgomery and Woody Marks.
08:43To your point, the one-two punch, yes, I believe it's good enough.
08:46I believe they're good enough at the running back room right now.
08:47I don't know if they're done, but I believe they're good enough
08:49in the running back room right now to go win a bunch of games, absolutely.
08:53Yeah, I don't know the answer for me yet.
09:00I know he had a really good offensive line in front of him in Detroit,
09:05which, again, we don't know exactly what this offensive line is going to look like.
09:11But if we look at and compare it to what it has been, which I think last year they got
09:16to a space of being an average offensive line, you know, can he still do some of the similar
09:21things that he was able to do four and a half yards of carry like he did last year in
09:26Detroit?
09:27And, yeah, I mean, we'll see.
09:29I think, obviously, if they go David Montgomery and they're not saying, you know, guys like
09:36Brees Hall, if they were available, guys like Kenneth Walker, if they were, to me, I think
09:40they're also saying we like Woody Marks more than just a comp, like just a third down scat
09:47back.
09:48I think they're saying we got a 1A, 1B.
09:52I think with this, they're saying Woody Marks is going to get a fair amount of carries as
09:56well and not just going to be like this is a workhorse type of deal.
10:00And here's the other part of this thing, why I love it for the Texans is we don't know if
10:06Brees Hall is going to be available.
10:07We don't know if Kenneth Walker is going to come in 12 million or 14 and a half million.
10:11What we do know is that David Montgomery was available.
10:16He fits D'Amico Ryan's culture to an absolute T.
10:20D, everybody you talk to about this guy is he's exactly what you want in a football
10:25player and a teammate.
10:27And I mean, this is a Nick Casario, D'Amico Ryan's guy before you ever made the deal.
10:31And then I always say this, man, don't ever pass up for sure for some more.
10:35I mean, it's, this is one of those deals where if you know he's on the market, you know,
10:39you can go get him, go get his ass.
10:41Don't let him go to Denver and then come back here and tell us, oh, well, man, Kenneth
10:45Walker won 14 and a half, man.
10:46We can only get 12.
10:47You know what I mean?
10:48Like go get, set your sights on somebody, go get them and let's see if it works out.
10:53And I, and I love where they landed with David Montgomery, especially at the number that
10:58they got him at.
10:58Now we'll see if there's two years, the two years remaining on his contract.
11:01We'll see what they do with it.
11:03Yeah.
11:04I don't know what they're going to do with it, but right now, David Montgomery, especially
11:07in 2026, the, the, the money that's there is, I mean, shoot, you, you get a, you get
11:13a solid one, a one B with Woody Marks.
11:16It's, it's definitely believe their offensive or their D or their running back room got
11:20better.
11:20No question.
11:21As, as to what it was last year with Nick Chubb and, and, and, and, and Woody Marks.
11:28All right.
11:28The other news that that came before that was Titus Howard, Clint Titus Howard.
11:34He has been traded to Cleveland for a fifth round pick and the Browns went ahead and,
11:39uh, it immediately signed him to an extension of three year deal worth 63 million 45 of
11:44it.
11:45Guaranteed Titus Howard, uh, in a statement, this is from Aaron Wilson said, I wasn't
11:49surprised.
11:50Uh, Texans, uh, is what Titus Howard said on the trade to the Browns for a fifth round
11:55pick.
11:55They're trying to get younger and pay some guys.
11:58I ain't mad.
11:59I kind of knew it was, uh, it was going to happen.
12:02And then he, uh, as we said, signed a three year deal, 63, 45 million.
12:07He didn't seem to be surprised Clint.
12:10I guess I'll kick this off and, and, and to the people as well, were you surprised to
12:15wake up this morning to hear that he was going to be traded?
12:17Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm very surprised.
12:19Um, I'm not mad at it, but I'm very surprised.
12:21I mean, this is an organization that has, has prided themselves on cross training, offensive
12:26linemen and position flex and versatility, particularly with offensive linemen.
12:32I mean, they, they, they use those terms ad nauseum.
12:35I mean, it's exhausting how often you hear it.
12:37It's frustrating to watch how often it happened.
12:40The one guy that's been really, really, really good at it.
12:43And the one guy that saved their ass multiple times, um, is, is Titus Howard.
12:48I mean, you're talking about a guy that, that could be a, a above average left tackle,
12:53above average, right tackle, and clearly an above average guard, given how he played this
12:56year on either side of the football.
12:58Um, it wouldn't shock me if he could be a center, if they, if they gave him an off season
13:02to
13:02practice it surprised, they didn't, to be completely honest with you.
13:05So just from an organization organizational perspective, he is exactly what they want
13:11him to.
13:11He's been a good soldier all the, all, all the while, you know, to not playing tackle.
13:16Um, so I am surprised that they let that player go knowing that you've got a right tackle,
13:22right guard problem in terms of just not a starter.
13:26And you've got a center position that you'd love to upgrade.
13:29You've already got a very steep heel and replacing those guys.
13:32Now with Titus Howard out, out, you've got one guy and that's Ariante Urshory to be one
13:37of the tackles left or right.
13:38You've got to replace or upgrade significantly four positions on the offensive line.
13:44So those two things to me is you got the, the, the most versatile player that we maybe have
13:49ever seen on the offensive line for the Texans in a sense of playing both sides of the ball,
13:53these different positions.
13:54And, and then you've also got a guy that was insurance for some critical, critical spots,
13:59left tackle, right tackle.
14:01Um, that that's, that surprised me that they move on from that guy with so many needs on
14:07the offensive line as we sit right now, but it's a money game.
14:10It's a money play.
14:11Get used to it, folks.
14:13This is one of those deals where if you're fixing to give Will Anderson, the kind of contract
14:17you don't give Will Anderson while paying everybody else.
14:19And if you're fixing to give CJ Stroud, any kind of contract over the next, over the
14:23next 18 months.
14:25Well, now you're scaring me.
