00:00Is there any fallout from the George Pickens non-exclusive tag that broke
00:06when we had Brian Schottenheimer on the air Friday at the Combine in Indianapolis?
00:11Good morning, Metroplex.
00:12Shout out to the 6 a.m. Club.
00:14Hopefully you had a fantastic weekend.
00:15We got the entire squad back in DFW.
00:18Chantre, Farjay Choppy, and Cowboys insider Bobby Bell.
00:23Bobby, what is the non-exclusive tag?
00:25You can get draft picks for him,
00:27and other teams can negotiate with him, and it's not against the rules.
00:31So the exclusive tag would be what they slapped on Dak the second time, I think.
00:35It may have been both, but definitely the second time.
00:37The exclusive tag just says teams can't negotiate with him even if they wanted to.
00:41They can't give you any draft capital for him.
00:43He can only talk to the Cowboys.
00:45Does this change your mind or opinion or make you think a certain type of way
00:50that it's non-exclusive, opening it up to other teams?
00:53I mean, it's a little cheaper,
00:55and if you just don't believe that anybody will come pay him
00:59and give you two ones,
01:00then there's no point in spending the extra $2 million.
01:04Quarterbacks typically will get the exclusive
01:06because you just do not want to...
01:08Well, you can make him happier by giving him the extra $2 million.
01:10You could do that.
01:11You just may not want to.
01:13You may not be worried about that
01:14because you got him locked in now.
01:16He's tagged.
01:16He's yours.
01:17This also gives, like, the...
01:19That's what they tell you.
01:20Yeah.
01:20This also gives the team, like, an idea of what his value is.
01:25Yeah.
01:25Like, with a contract,
01:26like, if they wanted to sign him long-term
01:28and somebody says,
01:28all right, here's $40 million,
01:31it's like, all right, now we're not swimming in that pond.
01:33Or they say it's $30.
01:34It's like, oh, okay, there's a deal.
01:36Yeah, I mean, I don't think anybody's going to...
01:37The problem is just, again,
01:40you're tacking two firsts onto it,
01:41so I don't know that you're even going to get an idea of the market
01:43because teams at that point are saying...
01:45I don't think anybody's saying George Pickens is worth $40 and two ones.
01:49Like, nobody's going to board over that.
01:50Can you imagine having four first-round picks?
01:52It'd be great.
01:52We go back to Indy.
01:53Now, you know, you wouldn't get them until...
01:55Oh, no, the draft.
01:56Pittsburgh.
01:56Who was the...
01:57The Jets had that, like, when they traded Bill.
02:01I mean, the Jets are getting set up close for that
02:03in the near future
02:05after their Sauce Gardner and Quinton Williams trades.
02:07I had to laugh out loud in the airport
02:10as I was listening to and reading Stephen Jones
02:13telling Rich Eisen George's reaction to Jerry being tagged.
02:18We think we just love that George is going to be back.
02:21Jerry had a great visit with him yesterday.
02:23He was fired up that he wasn't going to be going anywhere.
02:26And we all understand, too,
02:30you know, economically, guys,
02:31probably would prefer a long-term deal,
02:33but the franchise tag, you know,
02:36economically is not bad either.
02:37But he was very fired up about his future with us.
02:41We felt like he wanted to be in Dallas.
02:44He certainly said that to Jerry yesterday.
02:46Jerry just said he was on cloud nine,
02:49that he was going to be a cowboy again.
02:53Yeah, most guys, you know,
02:55they probably want the long-term deal.
02:57Probably here.
02:58He was on cloud nine.
03:02Thank you so much, Jerry.
03:04Thank you so much for paying me 27.
03:0527 for one year instead of 35 for four.
03:09It's very calculated the way he wants to say it.
03:12He was fired up about being here long-term.
03:15He's very, his future being here.
03:17Oh, he's super excited about being here.
03:20Now, yeah, most guys want the long-term deal.
03:22I think that's the part he's leaving out
03:23is probably saying,
03:24hey, I want to be here long-term,
03:26not just next year.
03:28I'd like to be here for a long time
03:30and to get some security here, guys.
03:31Yeah, that was just really funny.
03:33He's like, thank you so much.
03:34You got to smooth it over a little bit
03:37whenever you make those calls.
03:38Well, the Cowboys are opening up that spending money.
03:42Todd Archer with their report.
03:43They will restructure the contracts
03:45of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Tyler Smith,
03:49creating $66 million worth of room.
03:53Jerry said they will rework the deals
03:55of Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Osa,
03:58who are scheduled to count around $63 million
04:01against the cap.
04:03Just so we all know, teams were informed
04:06that the cap will be $301 million per team,
04:10up $22 million from last year.
04:13So the Cowboys opening up $66 million to start with.
04:16So I went to Over the Caps website.
04:19It's not updated yet.
04:19They haven't updated all this stuff.
04:21So I was trying to figure out exactly
04:23how much that leaves them
04:24because they were at like $350 something
04:27in terms of active spending.
04:29And then you take the $60 million away.
04:30You're obviously going to be in the black.
04:32It's called in the black.
04:33Is that what it is?
04:33In the black?
04:34Yep.
04:34The red is not where you want to be.
04:35I just, I mean, do we trust?
04:38Do we really trust that they're going to go?
04:39Because they consider free agency buying their own.
04:43Right.
04:43Well, Jerry Jones on the bus.
04:46This video's courtesy of Nick Harris and John Mishota
04:49talked about that money.
04:51Do I see me ending up spending more money
04:54than maybe if you put a perfect picture together
04:58that the guy that's back there looking at the account
05:02would say we don't have any or don't have enough?
05:04I could see me being aggressive.
05:06I could see us being aggressive in free agency.
05:12And by the very virtue of having two number ones
05:15we're going to spend more money in the draft
05:18than normally you would spend
05:19even though we don't have a two.
05:21Everybody knows those two ones
05:23are dramatically different than a two.
05:27Financially.
05:28I left that last part in there
05:30because we always now got to figure out
05:34how are we going to get tricked after all in.
05:36Right.
05:36How are we going to get...
05:37And I just thought...
05:38I don't think Jerry is really alluding to this 100%,
05:42but I just thought it was funny at the end.
05:44He goes, we're already spending more money than usual
05:48because we have a second first-round pick.
05:49Right.
05:50And two first-round picks are more expensive
05:52than just having a first and a second.
05:53I was like, I'm looking for all the technicalities
05:55for him to mess with us over like he did all in.
05:59That's it.
06:00Technicality number one is the second first-round pick.
06:02That's a high lot of money.
06:05Hey, by the way...
06:06More than usual.
06:07It's also a fifth year.
06:08Go back the last 10 years
06:09and see how much money we've spent in the first round.
06:11And I guarantee you this year's more.
06:13Because...
06:13And also, like...
06:14You have a second pick.
06:15They probably are not just looking at this year money.
06:19They're looking at the fifth-year money.
06:20And that fifth-year money is going to be in the 20s.
06:23Right.
06:23Theoretically?
06:24Yeah, you assume.
06:25Based on just...
06:27Generally, they're going to...
06:28Whenever they make a pick,
06:29they bank on exercising the fifth-year option.
06:32And so they will factor that in a lot of times
06:36into what their liabilities are.
06:37So there's an extra $20 million.
06:40Get ready.
06:41Yeah.
06:41Get ready.
06:42That's not going to be it.
06:43That's not going to be it.
06:44They're going to spend.
06:45I think they're going to splash.
06:47That's my new term.
06:48Forget spending.
06:49They're going to splash.
06:50That's my prediction.
06:51Write it on the wall.
06:51I don't even think it's a wall hot takes.
06:53I think it's common sense.
06:54I think it's locked in.
06:55They're going to splash.
06:56Is it going to be a splash, like a moogle kind of splash,
07:00where it's a big...
07:01A belly flop?
07:02Save that.
07:02No, it's a big boulder that goes in the water.
07:06Or is it going to be like you throw a little rock in there.
07:08A pebble?
07:09Yeah.
07:09A pebble skip?
07:10What kind of splash is it going to be?
07:12Because the big boulder splash, where it gets...
07:15You hear the big thunk?
07:17Yeah.
07:18That could be good.
07:19It's going to be a medium-sized boulder.
07:23Okay?
07:25Okay, that would indicate that they're aware of when free agency starts.
07:31They're going to sign somebody that first week, I bet.
07:34What's the first day?
07:36I mean, a lot of people don't sign the first day.
07:39Yeah, but first day means, like, you're really ultra-aggressive.
07:42How many days?
07:43How many days in a free agency do we get our first signing?
07:45Let's do an over-under on that.
07:48I mean, a first signing period or first big one?
07:52First signing period.
07:53I bet they sign somebody day one that's not like...
07:56They just probably won't be big.
07:57You got to think, somebody like Trey Hendrickson, who's going to be exposed to the market, he's
08:00going to shop himself a little bit.
08:02I would be very surprised if Trey Hendrickson signed day one.
08:05And so those type of big names that they're looking at...
08:08All right, starter.
08:09N'Kobe Dean may be a day one guy.
08:11Starter.
08:12Yeah, they'll sign a starter day one.
08:13And N'Kobe Dean...
08:15I would consider N'Kobe to be a pretty big splash.
08:19I wouldn't.
08:19He's a name.
08:20I think he's a name mainly because of his Georgia days, like, tied into the NFL team.
08:25But just as an NFL player, I don't know that he'd be huge.
08:27Jeremy Fowler with the report in the very latest, Cowboys are crafting a detailed free agency plan to bolster their
08:34defense.
08:35The new scheme under Christian Parker needs replenishment.
08:39N'Kobe Dean is someone to watch as a green dot player in the middle of the defense.
08:44They will monitor the top of the pass rush, pass rush free agent options as well.
08:48They are not guaranteed to spend big, but I believe they will get a pass rusher at some point.
08:53And then he threw out a name in the safety class, Bobby.
08:57Jalen Thompson from Arizona makes sense, according to Fowler.
09:00And they need a nickel corner.
09:02Cowboys have felt the void since Jordan Lewis left.
09:06And Jerry did say on the bus, it was a mistake.
09:08We should not have let Jordan Lewis get away.
09:10Yeah, Jalen Thompson is just naturally, if you're looking for how do I connect dots,
09:17be very easy to connect dots from the Cardinal secondary, as that's where Ryan Smith, one of your new secondary
09:21coaches, came from.
09:23So, yeah, you always look at where are the connections?
09:26Are they with N'Kobe Dean and Reed Blankenship and guys like that for Christian Parker?
09:31And then you look at, all right, who played on the defensive line for the Broncos that, you know,
09:35your new defensive line coach, Marcus Dixon, may be familiar with.
09:39This is, I think, just connecting dots in a lot of ways.
09:41Jerry, as usual, this is not breaking news.
09:45Very presumptuous and, to me, overly optimistic on how easy and quick it could be to turn this defense around
09:52and go along with the O.
09:53A defense that could support an offense the way that we played at the level last year and get us
10:00into the playoffs
10:01and give us a chance to get good after we get in the playoffs.
10:05I see that defense this year, this year.
10:09I do.
10:11And like I told you, we don't have to do much to get better.
10:14Stop.
10:15And I'm not trying to.
10:16We don't have to.
10:17I know you, before you laugh too much, I'm going to try to give him an out.
10:21He needs seven players.
10:22Is he saying the bar is so low, we don't have to do much to get better?
10:28Or there's not many moves to make to get better?
10:31So better is technically eight and nine.
10:33Yeah, I think he's saying it's hard to be worse.
10:35Okay.
10:35That's what I was wondering.
10:37We don't have to do much to get better because I think that was RJ's initial reaction.
10:41Yeah, not like, guys, we're this close.
10:44We just got to get the one little factor, the one glue piece.
10:48All right, if 10 is Seattle and one is the Raiders, where does Jerry think the Cowboys are?
10:57Defensively or as a team?
10:58As a team.
11:00As a team.
11:00One is the Super Bowl.
11:01Ten is the Super Bowl champs.
11:03I would say he thinks they're six.
11:05Yeah.
11:06Six.
11:07You think he's that low?
11:08You think he thinks they're that far?
11:09I think he thinks their offense is like a nine and their defense is like a two.
11:14Six for Jerry optimism.
11:16Yeah, there's going to be some.
11:16I was thinking seven.
11:17Sure, probably.
11:17We'll go six because Jerry is definitely going to be.
11:20Coachy Steph.
11:21You got the Jerry tax and it'll be a little more optimistic.
11:24Jerry tax, yeah.
11:24All right, let's hear the whole clip now.
11:26We'll pick up.
11:26We don't have to do much to get better.
11:29And I'm not trying to be trite.
11:31We just don't have to do much.
11:32But better, just better, would not get it done in my mind.
11:37But we've really got to come out and be sound.
11:40And I think we've addressed every phase of it.
11:44And I think we're very capable of doing not only better,
11:48but playing defense at a level that would get us in the playoffs.
11:51I believe that.
11:52Strong.
11:53Pretty strong.
11:55I mean.
11:56Based on what?
11:58You're going to line up your free agent board.
11:59That's your plan.
12:00Other people are going to be after that board as well.
12:02And then as RJ alluded to last week and you mentioned last night,
12:06that initial board may not be looking too strong.
12:09Yeah, it's just it's players that you may not be super familiar with.
12:14So if you take a look at.
12:15If you take a look at.
12:17It's just it's about name recognition.
12:20So Justice Mosqueda, who is a NFL writer, he did a took the 22 different free agent rankings.
12:26And he created a consensus board of like, here are the top free agents based on all these different rankings.
12:32So here are the top players at every defensive position.
12:35The Cowboys need address.
12:37Usher is Trey Hendrickson.
12:38Linebacker is Devin Lloyd.
12:40Corner is Jalen Watson.
12:42The top safety is Brian Cook.
12:44So in their 21 combined seasons of playing in the NFL, those four players have made five combined Pro Bowls
12:49and four of them are Trey Hendrickson.
12:51And Devin Lloyd was the only one to make a Pro Bowl last season.
12:54I don't know if there are many people who could tell you who Brian Cook plays for.
12:58Do you know?
12:59No.
12:59Yeah, he's a running back for Buffalo.
13:01Nope.
13:01James.
13:02He is the safety for the Kansas City Chiefs.
13:04That's a prominent team.
13:05And you still didn't like people still don't recognize that he's one of their players.
13:08He is the safety for the Kansas City Chiefs.
