01 March - National afternoon forecast presented by Honor Criswick.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon. It's the first day of meteorological spring. It certainly
00:05felt like we've had a taste of spring recently, but today with the wind and rain, it might
00:10not feel very spring-like, but that doesn't mean we're not going to see some better weather
00:13as we head into next week. For now though, cloud, spells of rain and drizzle, some fairly
00:19brisk winds, particularly across parts of the west. This rain is set to be quite persistent
00:23across Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland, northern parts of England later. Now across
00:28parts of Wales, southern parts of England, yes, there will be some patchy rain and drizzle
00:32at times, but later on this afternoon, most of the rain fizzling away, so many should see
00:37some drier and brighter interludes, and hopefully some breaks in the cloud will allow some sunnier
00:41spells as well. But for the time being, it's set to be quite a cloudy afternoon, a little
00:47milder compared to yesterday, highs reaching around 13 degrees Celsius, so that might be
00:52offset a little bit by the stronger winds out into the west. Now into this evening, those
00:56winds are set to really pick up through into the Irish Sea, where there is a risk of coastal
01:00gale, so we do just need to keep a half-eye on the wind strength as this system continues
01:04to push its way eastwards. And alongside this, outbreaks of rain set to continue. This could
01:09be a little bit heavy at times across hills. But to the far north of this system and to
01:13the far south, it should remain mostly dry, a mix of cloud and also some clearer skies.
01:19And with that added breeze, that should hold temperatures up to around the mid-single figures, so largely frost-free
01:24by the time we reach Monday morning.
01:27Now for the beginning of the new week, there will still be some spells of rain at times.
01:32We've got this frontal system draped across the country, but it's fairly slow moving.
01:36That does mean quite a wet day for northern parts of England, parts of Wales and southwest
01:39England. But actually to the south of this, there should actually be plenty of clear skies.
01:44So lots of sunshine around, and once again, temperatures up by a degree or two, so feeling very present
01:48and spring-like in the sunshine across the far south. Once again, across Scotland, Northern
01:53Ireland, there will be some brighter or sunnier breaks, but we can't rule out some showers
01:57just pushing into the west later into the afternoon.
02:01Now, as promised into next week, some more spring-like weather. We've got an area of high
02:05pressure starting to build in on Tuesday, which should bring lots of dry, settled conditions
02:10as we head into next week. This high doesn't stick around for long. It does eventually drift
02:14its way eastwards, but as it does so, we pick up more of a southerly flow. So once again,
02:18some milder air pushing into the south, so where we see any sunshine, it should actually
02:22feel quite warm for the time of year. But there will be some cloud around if we pick
02:27up a bit more of an easterly flow. Any eastern areas of England, eastern areas of Scotland
02:31might pick up a bit of low cloud, so temperatures not getting quite as warm here. And that will
02:35pretty much be the theme into next week, chasing cloud, and that will have an impact on how just
02:39warm the temperatures will get. But of course, for more updates on that, you can subscribe
