📍 Muzaffarnagar | 17 February 2026

In a shocking incident in Basikalan village under Shahpur Police Station limits of Muzaffarnagar, police have arrested a woman for allegedly murdering her four-year-old niece and attempting to kill her sister-in-law.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma, information was received around 2:30 am on February 17 that a minor girl had been kidnapped and a woman attacked with a knife. Police teams rushed to the spot through Dial 112.

On reaching the house, police found Firdous lying injured on a cot in her in-laws’ room with severe stab wounds to her abdomen. She was immediately shifted to the Community Health Centre and later referred to Meerut for advanced treatment. Doctors have stated that she is now out of danger.

During the search, the four-year-old girl was found dead inside a covered water tank within the house premises. Her body was floating on the surface. The body was sent for post-mortem after inquest proceedings.

An FIR (No. 44/2026) has been registered under Sections 109(1), 103(1), 118(1) of the BNS and Section 4/25 of the Arms Act.

During interrogation, Mana, daughter of Yamin and sister-in-law (nanad) of the victim, allegedly confessed to the crime. Police recovered the meat-cutting knife used in the attack at her instance.

According to police, the accused was in a relationship with a neighbour for the past two to three years. She alleged that her sister-in-law had fixed her marriage against her will and frequently stopped her from speaking to her lover. Police said she had been planning the crime for nearly a month and had procured sleeping pills eight days ago through an acquaintance.

On the night of the incident, she allegedly mixed 16 sleeping tablets into the family’s food and tea. While most members fell unconscious, the child was more severely affected. The accused then allegedly lifted the girl, climbed onto the tank using a brick, opened the lid and threw her inside, leading to her death. She later attacked her sister-in-law with a knife, striking her two to three times.

Police said the accused has shown no visible remorse during questioning and claimed she acted out of resentment and anger. The role of her alleged lover, whose location has been traced nearly 2,000 km away, is under investigation. One more person is suspected to have helped her procure the tablets.

The arrest was carried out by a team led by Station House Officer Gajendra Singh, along with SOG, cyber cell and other police officials. Further investigation is underway.
