Seth and Sean talk with communications student from Ithaca College, Devon Jarvis, who graciously joined at the drop of a hat to talk about what so many colleges are doing at radio row. And get this: he nails pronouncing hors d'oeuvres immediately.
Transcript
00:00I'm told, I've been handed a note, I've always wanted to say that.
00:04Hey, I've been handed a note that the University of Houston and Texas State will both be here.
00:09Oh, they will?
00:09That's a lot of colleges.
00:11The radio rows I remember was Syracuse and almost nobody else.
00:15I wonder if that, does NIL have something to do with that or something?
00:18Are you all getting an NIL bag?
00:20Can one of you guys jump on real quick?
00:22Thanks.
00:23Like, this is, don't be intimidated by our fancy equipment.
00:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30What's your name?
00:30My name is Devin.
00:31Thanks for having me on.
00:32Devin, this is Devin from the Syracuse School of Communications.
00:35Ithaca College.
00:35Oh, excuse me, Ithaca College.
00:36No worries.
00:37No worries.
00:37I was staring at, we were just talking about Syracuse.
00:39I apologize, Devin.
00:40Yeah.
00:40Syracuse, he's getting off.
00:41He's walking off.
00:44Devin, you guys have been here for a couple years now, right?
00:46Yes, this is our fourth year.
00:48So we send a different crew every year, but this is our fourth.
00:50Okay.
00:50It's been wonderful.
00:51But, yeah, I know it is a lot of upstate New York schools.
00:54I mean, Marist is right behind us, too.
00:57Poughkeepsie.
00:57It's like borderline upstate.
00:59I don't know how you're going to consider it there.
01:00I had a friend that went to Marist.
01:01Yeah.
01:02Poughkeepsie.
01:02Yep.
01:03So what's the goal with you guys being here for a week?
01:06So we just do as much media coverage as we possibly can.
01:08Yeah.
01:09Interview a bunch of people.
01:10Maybe you guys.
01:11Who knows?
01:11Yeah.
01:12But, no, we have a lot of time to do interviews at the desk here,
01:16bring people on, doing some social media content,
01:19walk-in talks with the players coming around.
01:21There's also the, I think, some packages, too.
01:24So media night with the players should be wonderful as well.
01:26Devin is so smooth, man.
01:28He's very smooth.
01:28He's totally going to take our job.
01:31Do you hope to go into play-by-play or something?
01:33Play-by-play is the goal right now, but also hosting, anchoring,
01:37reporting as well.
01:38Do they tell you guys, you kids,
01:39that basically you just got to know how to do everything these days?
01:42Exactly.
01:43Exactly.
01:43I mean, you have to be versatile.
01:44There's no clear path now.
01:46I mean, you're going to get a job that you don't really want to do,
01:48probably, when you leave college.
01:50So doing anything you can to get your feet wet, be comfortable in any situation is kind of the goal.
01:55And that's all this is, getting the tech set up as well, finding ways to interact and make connections with everybody here,
02:03while also just getting all the reps possible.
02:05Where are you from?
02:05I'm from Connecticut.
02:06Where?
02:07Oh, Westport.
02:08I grew up in Simsbury.
02:09Oh, very cool.
02:10Yeah, you're a coastal kid.
02:12I am.
02:13Well, the problem is...
02:13I lived inland.
02:15Right.
02:15In Connecticut.
02:16These are tough, rough streets.
02:17WEI was here yesterday.
02:19Yeah.
02:19We were talking with them, and I know they don't consider me from New England,
02:22because all that, that corner part of Fairfield County.
02:24Oh, that's New York.
02:25That's New York.
02:25It's not really New England.
02:27It's a nice place.
02:27Devin, how old are you?
02:29I am 20 years old.
02:30Do me a favor.
02:31Sure.
02:32How would you pronounce this word?
02:34Hors-d'oeuvres.
02:35Oh, God.
02:37He nailed it.
02:38He nailed it.
02:39Devin, I have two sons.
02:42Okay.
02:42Both college graduates.
02:43Wonderful.
02:43One of them's a lawyer.
02:44Congratulations.
02:45Yeah.
02:46I went to TCU and Baylor.
02:47Good schools are ages 28 and 26.
02:50I was with them this week up in Chicago.
02:52I was with one of them.
02:53My 28-year-old said he really enjoyed the whores divorced at the function.
02:59Come on.
03:00Yeah.
03:00Are they really good schools?
03:02No, I'm just joking.
03:03TCU and Baylor, I know.
03:04They are good schools.
03:05How the hell did they get through?
03:06They're not communications majors like Devin.
03:08And here's the worst part, Devin, is that when I was in the car with my older son, my younger
03:13son, the 26-year-old, FaceTimed us in the car, and I asked him, how do you pronounce H-O-R-S
03:18space D apostrophe, blah, blah, blah.
03:20Whores divorce?
03:21Oh.
03:22I was so embarrassed.
03:23I'm sorry.
03:23Are you looking for a father or anything?
03:25Listen, if you need children who can correctly pronounce hors d'oeuvres, I'll have to see with
03:32my father if he's okay with the swap, because that also might be a condition that he needs
03:37a son who can pronounce hors d'oeuvres.
03:38He's a relief child for you.
03:41He can bring him in.
03:42That would be great.
03:42He's like, send Sammy to the bullpen or to the dugout.
03:46It has to be full-time, but if I have to go to functions where they have to use big
03:51words, I'd rather bring you.
03:52Oh, I appreciate that.
03:53Can you imagine you could play his music, and Devin would come walking in in his suit
03:57and everything, come out and enunciating everything perfectly.
04:01That would be amazing.
04:02Oh, God.
04:04Oh, man, I am so retroactively.
04:06They're listening right now, too.
04:07Oh, goodness.
04:08Well, I'm sorry, gentlemen.
04:09No, you don't need to apologize.
04:11Hey, let me ask you this.
04:13Sure.
04:14Who's your dream interview?
04:15Dream interview.
04:16If you'd interview one person, who would it be?
04:18Hmm.
04:20It's a shame.
04:20I have to think of that as somebody who wants to interview people.
04:23Probably something I should have thought of before.
04:25Jim Nance.
04:27So I have a deep connection to the game of golf.
04:30Of course, Jim Nance, the voice of golf on CBS, the Masters, and the PGA Championship.
04:35Oh, wonderful.
04:35Fantastic.
04:36Yeah, so my grandfather's ashes are actually spread on Augusta National.
04:40No way.
04:41Yeah, I mean, golf is all throughout my life, and for a guy in Jim Nance who is kind
04:46of the voice of a generation, especially for golf, for football, for the Final Four, it's
04:51hard to ask for much more from a person who also just seems to be, like, the nicest dude
04:55ever.
04:55Yeah.
04:55Right?
04:55Well, this is interesting, Devin, because he's from Houston.
04:59You know, Steve's very involved.
05:00We have roommates with Freddie Couples in college.
05:02Yes.
05:02Yeah.
05:03But also did, at one point, basically boycott our station.
05:08Oh, sure.
05:09Yes.
05:10Yeah.
05:10Just for one night.
05:12Yeah, it was for a little...
05:13It's all water under the bridge.
05:15But if we tell him the story about your grandfather's ashes at Augusta...
05:18He might like that.
05:19Oh, that'll get him right back in the good graces.
05:21Yeah.
05:22We met Devin.
05:23We better go to break before Devin takes our job.
05:24Yeah, yeah.
05:24Devin, here's another lesson.
05:25Okay.
05:26Don't be sitting next to your boss when you're two minutes past break.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Well, I'm sorry for keeping you guys...
05:31No, no, no, no, no.
05:31Thank you so much for having me on.
05:33What's your last name?
05:33Jarvis.
05:34Jarvis.
05:34Devin Jarvis.
05:35I've been handed another note.
05:37Sean and Seth, you're fired.
05:38Yeah.
05:38Devin is in.
05:39Yeah.
05:40All right.
05:40I'll take it.
05:41Good luck.
05:41Thank you very much.
05:42We look forward to being next to you guys this week.
05:43Wonderful.
05:43Appreciate it, guys.
05:44Great to see you.
05:44You got it.
05:45Appreciate it.
05:45So, what's your last name?
05:46Jarvis.
05:46Jarvis.
05:47Jarvis.
05:47Okay, there you go.
05:48All right.
05:48Devin Jarvis, everybody.
