Seth and Sean lay out 5 reasons they think the Texans would be an intriguing team for this year's Hard Knocks.
Transcript
00:00So you and I talked about yesterday, Hard Knocks.
00:03There are 16 teams that are eligible to be asked to do Hard Knocks,
00:10and they are not allowed to say no.
00:11If the league, whoever makes this decision, I don't know if it's the NFL or HBO
00:16or NFL Films, they probably collaborate and work together on it,
00:19but somewhere there is an entity that can walk into the McNairs and say,
00:24hey, we want you guys to be on Hard Knocks.
00:26And because the Texans have not been on it in the last eight years
00:30and their head coach is not a first-year head coach with that team,
00:36they would have to say yes.
00:38Along with 15 other teams, I'm not going to list all the teams.
00:40There's some compelling ones.
00:41We went through the yes or no yesterday and all that.
00:44I just don't know if I had to sit down and pitch the Texans to these folks.
00:47If I said, you know what, I really want my team on there.
00:50These are the five things I would pitch about the Texans,
00:52being compelling on a show like Hard Knocks.
00:54Number five, Southern Gentleman D'Amico,
00:58who can go from Southern Gentleman to a civilized swarm savage like that.
01:05I'd also like to see what it looks like, honestly.
01:07D'Amico Ryan's cutting a player.
01:10Oh, that's right, because we would see that.
01:12We would see that, yeah.
01:13I thought that was one of the things that I was most impressed with as a former player
01:18was watching Bill O'Brien cut players,
01:20because I liked that he was very honest with them about what they needed to improve,
01:25what they needed to work on, where I think some coaches,
01:29when they cut a player, might just try to blow smoke up their butts
01:33and paint a picture that's maybe more positive than it is.
01:37I thought O'Brien was really good about just being honest with the players.
01:41Yeah, yeah.
01:41I think D'Amico would be really good at it as well.
01:43How do they – is Nick part of that?
01:45Is it Nick D'Amico?
01:46Is it just D'Amico?
01:46Does it depend on the player?
01:48That kind of thing.
01:49But I think D'Amico – the bottom line is, I think for entirely different reasons,
01:55D'Amico would be very likable on there.
01:57Oh, yeah.
01:57I say for different reasons, because I think Bill O'Brien –
01:59I think that was the home run for Bill O'Brien 10 years ago.
02:01Yeah.
02:02No, and I think that partly, too, is I would just like it as an example
02:05of how you can coach players really, really hard without being –
02:10Without dog cussing them.
02:11Right, right.
02:11Because I think that's where – I think people have this notion that somehow D'Amico
02:16is easy to play for, and it's the exact opposite.
02:18Yeah.
02:19It's really just he holds guys to really high standards,
02:22and they get frustrated sometimes being coached by him because he's going to –
02:26he is meticulous in what he wants from you,
02:28and it doesn't matter whether a guy's yelling or screaming.
02:30It's the standard that the coach is holding you to that's difficult,
02:34that makes a guy – like difficult in a good way.
02:36Sure.
02:36That it's like, okay, this is a demanding coach.
02:38Number four, Will Anderson, Jr.
02:42America probably already – they've had a chance to experience Will Anderson, Jr.
02:46probably like him already.
02:47Yeah.
02:48He's my favorite player on the Texans.
02:50He might be my favorite Texan all time.
02:52Just he's so fun to watch and listen to.
02:55They have a lot of extroverted personalities on that defense.
02:58It would be pretty entertaining.
02:59Yeah.
03:00You know, between – I'd say Will, Kamari, Jalen, Petrie, some of those guys,
03:04they're going to get some good – they're worth micing up.
03:07Yes, yes, yes.
03:09Which – I'll combine three and four.
03:11Four, Will Anderson, Jr.
03:12Number three, the comedy duo of Hawk and Locke.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Hawk being Kalen Bullock and Locke being Kamari Lassie.
03:19Yeah, they ham it up.
03:20They ham it up.
03:21They're inseparable.
03:22But not in an annoying way.
03:23You talked to them the other day at pull practice.
03:25Yeah, and they were just hamming up.
03:27It was like talking to a group of, like, entertaining toddlers.
03:32Yes.
03:33They were just rambunctious and, like, picking on each other and everything.
03:36Yeah, yeah.
03:37So, that's number three.
03:39Number two, and we kind of had this conversation yesterday about the Texans
03:43as a potential hard knocks team.
03:45We didn't bring this one up, though, and I think this is a big one.
03:48Hannah McNair.
03:49Mm-hmm.
03:49The happy heel.
03:50The happy villain.
03:51She might talk some smack about other owners or something.
03:54Yeah, man.
03:55We might get some good stuff.
03:56She doesn't mind.
03:56And, like, especially if somebody sits down with her for – or mics her up
04:00throughout the day or something.
04:02I'd love to just get a clip of her talking about how she wants to destroy the
04:06Colts or something.
04:07Yeah, yeah.
04:07Or if they happen to get a preseason game against one of the teams where maybe
04:12they don't see eye-to-eye the McNairs with that ownership.
04:15You know, I don't think the McNairs are sideways with a lot of people.
04:17Well, and she would honestly – she would become kind of a cult favorite of a lot of
04:21NFL fans just because she's very photogenic.
04:23Yes.
04:24I think there would be a little bit of a – she would gain a following there.
04:27Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure.
04:29So, that's number two.
04:30Yeah, I wouldn't even be a, like, cult fanhood.
04:32It's like people would be like, you know, she's striking looking and that she
04:35would be a personality.
04:38Her Instagram would grow, if she has one, would grow big time during hard knocks,
04:42I think.
04:43Number one, this goes back to, honestly, what we've been talking about for the
04:46better part of this hour so far.
04:47I contend that C.J. Stroud is the most intriguing player this offseason in the
04:57NFL because of how it ended this past season.
05:00This is the thing that –
05:02You're rubbing your face.
05:04Yeah.
05:05His face.
05:06It's gone to me from a point –
05:07Like I said, I want to be a ventriloquist.
05:08With C.J. early in his career, I kind of liked – man, this guy really thinks a lot
05:13about life and stuff in a deeper way than maybe a lot of 22-year-olds.
05:16Yeah.
05:17I've gotten to the point now where I just – I don't need any more life lessons
05:19from a 24-year-old.
05:21And so there's parts of me that –
05:23You don't like his little axioms and things.
05:25There's sometimes where I just get to that point where I'm like, just – like,
05:28can we – guys, can we just do our job?
05:30Like, all right, not everything has to be a big dramatic story and tale of life's
05:37challenges and how you overcome them and everything.
05:40Can we just go out and play football?
05:42Yeah.
05:42I just don't have any more appetite for any more deep thoughts from a lot of the football
05:46players.
05:47I get it.
05:47I totally get it.
05:48Yeah.
05:48Do you disagree or agree with the intrigue?
05:51I mean, I'm being hyperbolic a little bit that he's the most – I feel that way only
05:54because I don't feel like thinking deeply about the other 31 teams.
05:58I just know that – I just know I've never seen a guy get more attention for a bad performance
06:03in a playoff game than he got the three or four days after that one in New England.
06:06I don't know if that's – I mean, if we go back to Tony Romo.
06:09I mean, Tony Romo got as much attention for botching a snap on a field goal.
06:14And so I think that there's – there have been some bad quarterback performances throughout
06:20time that have gotten a lot of –
06:21That's fair.
06:21I mean, that's one play.
06:22This is the most you – maybe we felt locally in Houston.
06:25Without question.
06:25For bad performances.
06:26Yeah, without question.
06:27Romo, I mean, every bad playoff performance from Romo got a lot of attention.
06:32Oh, sure.
06:32He's a Cowboys quarterback.
06:33Yeah.
06:33I know.
06:34I get that.
06:35I get that.
06:36If it was – if the –
06:37But Romo – real quick, Seth, Romo was never going into a season where he's got to –
06:42you know, that I can remember.
06:44The contract with CJ is a big thing.
06:46Social media was different, and the contract situations were different back when –
06:51in the early 2000s, social media wasn't even a thing.
06:54But Peyton Manning throwing four interceptions in the AFC Championship game
06:57and just getting destroyed by the Patriots, I mean, that was the point where a lot of people
07:01thought, Peyton just can't do it in the playoffs.
07:04He's been bad in the playoffs, Beinler, almost every game, save for a couple in his first
07:09eight years in the NFL, he was bad or unimpressive in the playoffs.
07:14And that was – the book was closed on Peyton Manning at that point.
07:18He was just a bad playoff performer.
07:20Yeah.
07:20So that was – if social media were a thing after he threw one touchdown and four interceptions,
07:26it was CJ's stat line against the Patriots, except it was in the championship game,
07:31that would have been huge.
07:31Well, and it was every – for the next week, it was, you know,
07:34Jarrett Stidham throws an interception at the end of their – the AFC title game the
07:37following week, and then what's – I don't know if it's trending or not,
07:42but what's popping up, CJ Stroud in a Jarrett Stidham uniform.
07:46Yeah, yeah.
07:46You know, I think – and I think you – by you saying social media,
07:50I think you're kind of touching on that aspect of it, which is, hey,
07:53people have way more means to go just Photoshop a picture of things nowadays.
07:58It's a lot easier to be publicly snarky these days.
08:01Yeah, yeah, and visually snarky, not just the words.
08:04Like, you can – in three minutes, if I type in the right prompts,
08:07I can come up with a hilarious picture of CJ Stroud failing at something.
08:11CJ Stroud in a jester outfit.
08:13Yeah, yeah.
08:13CJ Stroud is – yeah.
08:15I can't have five before you add to this break coming up right now.
08:18Yeah, yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Yeah.
08:21Yeah.
08:21Yeah.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:25Yeah.
