19 November - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00More wintry weather to come as we go through the rest of today and into Thursday. It's very cold
00:05out there and there's some more sleet and snow around as well, all due to this cold arctic air
00:11that's plunging its way across the country and it's this that's driving the wintry weather.
00:17There was a system that pushed its way southwards across parts of England earlier on today that
00:21brought some rain, sleet and snow to some central southern parts but that's now clearing away
00:26towards the southeast and really we're just talking about areas exposed to that brisk northerly
00:31wind seeing fair few showers. Those showers are likely to be a wintry mix. The further north you
00:36are the greater chance you are of seeing some snow. Across the northern half of Scotland the showers
00:42will be quite readily falling to snow even to lower levels. Meanwhile down the western side of the UK
00:47there'll be a fair few showers pushing into parts of Northern Ireland, Western Wales and also perhaps
00:52Cornwall and these could be a wintry mix. So some sleet, some snow, mainly the wintryness confined
00:58to higher ground here. Down the eastern side of England as well also exposed to that wind so likely
01:03to see a fair few showers and particularly over parts of northeast England likely to see some snow
01:07building up through today and into tomorrow. Away from these zones that I just mentioned actually a
01:12lot of dry weather to be had. Some decent sunshine across western parts as well but a cold feel for
01:18all of us. Temperatures several degrees below average for the time of year in most places and
01:23there's a biting northerly wind that we need to factor in. That's going to make it feel even colder
01:28as well. Little changes actually as we go through the end of the day. So those same places likely to
01:34continue to be affected by those wintry showers which will continue to be a mix of rain, sleet or snow.
01:39Obviously the further north you are the higher up you are. The greater the chance of seeing some snow.
01:44But many central parts staying largely dry. Lots of clear skies and so whilst there will still be a
01:50brisk wind around with those clear skies we are going to see temperatures plummeting. Most places
01:54even towns and cities getting close to if not below freezing. A few degrees below in quite a few places.
02:00So widespread frost could be quite harsh across parts of Scotland particularly in the shelter glens.
02:05We look at temperatures getting close to negative double figures. So a very cold start to the day
02:09on Thursday for sure. It is going to be frosty. Also icy. It's not just the snow that we need to
02:14watch out for. There will be some icy patches as well. Through Thursday and it's looking relatively
02:20similar to Wednesday really. Again we're seeing showers piling in on that brisk northerly flow. Now
02:26the wind will have changed direction ever so slightly and that does mean that we're perhaps going to see
02:30a few more showers penetrating a bit further inland across parts of northeast England and with that then
02:36snow totals particularly over the north York moors building up we could see a substantial amount
02:41here. Meanwhile elsewhere still some showers down the western parts but perhaps slightly fewer than
02:46on Wednesday and still showers continue across northern parts of Scotland. Many other areas though
02:51again a largely dry day with the best of the sunshine once more towards the west. We do currently have
02:56lots of snow and ice warnings out at the moment. Here's just well the majority of them. They are constantly
03:02being updated and tweaked but I wanted to focus on the amber warning. Like I said over the North York
03:07moors through Thursday in particular we're going to continue to see that snow building up 15 to 25
03:13centimetres possible above 100 metres or so. That's enough to cause some significant disruption which
03:19is why that amber warning is out. Difficult driving conditions allow extra time for your journey if you do
03:23have to travel and make sure you've got you know any necessary equipment with you. Blankets that kind of
03:30thing and there is the potential for power cuts as well. It's another cold day. The winds will be
03:35ever so slightly lighter than on Wednesday so maybe feeling slightly less raw but nonetheless temperatures
03:41below average for the time of year. In the sunshine that will help counter things a little bit but
03:46for many yeah a chilly feel for sure. As we go Thursday night into Friday it's looking even colder
03:52perhaps so a harsh frost for many of us on Friday morning but later on we are set to see some rain
03:58arriving from the west and that takes us into what's going to be fairly wet at times weekend but with
04:04that something a bit milder as well. For more information about what's to come thereafter and
04:09just how long this cold spell is going to last well make sure you check out the 10 day trend which
04:13Annie will be bringing to you later on. Bye bye.
